Bessie Gaines
Bessie Bradshaw Gaines, age 86, resident of Hope, died Monday, June 6, 2006 in Heather Manor Nursing and Rehab at Hope.
She was born Oct. 9, 1919 in Sheridan to Thomas J. and Lillie McKenney Bradshaw; was a homemaker; and a member of Garrett Memorial Baptist Church of Hope. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Homer Chatman Gaines on Feb. 19, 2003; and five brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Cole of De Queen, and Linda Burke and Mary Stutler, both of Hope; five grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 7 at Memory Gardens cemetery at Hope with Rev. Larry Silvey officiating, under the direction of Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home of Hope.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Heather Manor Nursing & Rehab Activities Fund, P.O. Box 2002, Hope, AR 71802.
Opal Mary Bell
Mrs. Opal Mary Shaw Bell, age 74, a resident of De Queen, died Saturday, May 27, 2006 in Texarkana, Texas.
She was born May 21, 1932 in the Sardis Community to Williams and Ethel O. Masterson Shaw, was a homemaker and a Baptist.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Floyd Christopher Bell on Oct. 5, 1981; one son, John Christopher Bell; two brothers, Gilbert and Doyle Shaw and two grandsons, Dayne Bell and Michael Vertiz.
She is survived by four sons, Bobby Bell of De Queen, Billy Bell of Horatio, Roger Bell of De Queen, and David Bell of San Diego, Calif.; four daughters, Christine Vertiz of Horatio, Linda Bowden of De Queen, Barbara Gaylord of Horatio, and Jennifer Saldivar of De Queen; two sisters, Hazel Miller of Mena, and Oma Lee Gibbons of Houston, Texas; 20 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, May 30 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.L. Walker officiating. Burial followed in the Old Piney cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m., Monday, May 29, at the funeral home.
Chloee D. Garrison
Chloee Dawn Garrison, infant daughter of Jerry Don and Christina Hancock Garrison, died Wednesday, June 7, 2006 in the Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
She was preceded in death by her grandparents, Willard and Cloteel Garrison.
She is survived by her parents; three brothers, Jacob, Jordan and Jauger Spray; grandparents, Floyd and Marlene Hancock and Mike and Wilma Stotts, all of Trumman, and her great-grandmother, Mildred Hancock of Jonesboro.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Sunday, June 11 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks. Burial followed in the Athens cemetery.
The family received friends from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m., Sunday, June 11, at the Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.
Howard S. Shaw
Howard S. Shaw was called home to glory to be with Jesus on Saturday, June 10, 2006. He was born August 7, 1920, in Laurel, Mississippi to David and Mary Shaw.
After retiring from the U.S. Navy in 1960 he settled in Horatio. He was a member of the Farm Bureau, Soil Conservation Board, Sevier County Rural Development Board and several other projects that benefited the county.
Preceding him in death were his parents; first wife Edit Shaw and a baby son, John Howard.
He is survived by his wife of thirty-four years Clara Shaw; daughter and son-in-law, Kathy and Richard West; grandson and granddaughter-in-law, David and Anaka Ledbetter; great-granddaughter, Haliegh; relatives in Laurel, Mississippi; and a number of family and friends in the area.
Funeral services for Mr. Shaw were held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, June 13, 2006 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. J. L. Walker and the Rev. Oscar Ball officiating. Burial followed in the Horatio cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Monday, June 12, at the funeral home.
Richard VanVoast
Richard Evert VanVoast, age 71, a resident of De Queen, died Tuesday, June 6, 2006 at his home.
He was born Oct. 22, 1934 in Mena to Evert Gay and Yula Longstreet VanVoast, was a retired truck driver and a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife of over 53 years, Shirley Williamson VanVoast of De Queen; one son, James VanVoast of De Queen; three daughters, Rhonda Beck, Sandra Nunn, and Janice VanVoast, all of De Queen; one brother, Phillip VanVoast of De Queen; three sisters, Viola Jones of Madill, Okla., Freda Pedron of De Queen and Margaret Gonzales of Dallas, Texas; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m., Thursday, June 8 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial followed in the Mt. Ida cemetery.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, June 7.
Billy R. Montgomery
Billy Ross Montgomery, age 78, a resident of Horatio, died Sunday, May 28, 2006 in Crossett.
He was born Feb. 19, 1928 in Horatio to Ross and Susie Jackson Montgomery, was a crop duster, a U.S. Army veteran, having served in Korea, a member of the VFW and Elks Lodge, and a Christian.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Billye Anne Jones Montgomery and a son, Scott Anthony Montgomery.
He is survived by a son, Mark Montgomery of Jonesboro; a daughter, Renee McGough of Crossett; a sister, Johnnie Lou Montgomery of Texarkana, Texas and four grandchildren.
Graveside funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 31 in the Clear Creek cemetery with Virgil Romine, minister officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Alma D. Benson
Alma Dean Benson, age 68, a resident of Idabel, Okla. died Wednesday, June 28, 2006 in the McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel.
She was born Oct. 2, 1937 in Arkinda to Clyde Benson Sr. and Maggie Tunnell Benson.
She is survived by a brother, Ralph Benson; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 1 in the Gravelly cemetery in Foreman, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Sharon Pennington
Sharon Kay Manasco Pennington, age 59, a resident of Dierks, died Thursday, June 29, 2006 at her home.
She was born March 27, 1947 in Umpire to Wingo and Inez Keith Manasco.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester A. Pennington on Feb. 22, 2006; her father; one brother, Charles Manasco; and one sister, Phyliss Manasco.
She is survived by seven children, Bryan Billings of Center Point, Devonda Furr of Cave City, Vickie Chambers and Lester Pennington Jr., both of Nashville, Connie Wilkerson of Hot Springs, Randy Pennington of Dierks and Ricky Pennington of Kirby; her mother; two sisters, Fern Linville of Umpire and Carolyn Wakefield of Nashville; and 13 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 2 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks with Rev. John Henry Williams and Rev. Bruce Short officiating. Burial followed in the Galena cemetery in Umpire.
