Marvin "Pete" Austin
Marvin "Pete" Austin, age 93, of Umpire, passed away Friday, December 30, 2005.
He was born on December 1, 1912 at Langley, the son of William Lafayette Austin and Tamsey LeRoy Linville Austin. On April 28, 1939, he married
Mildred Spaine Brinkley Austin who preceded him in death on June 16, 2003. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Lowell Austin and his sister, Jewel Davasher.
Mr. Austin was a retired school teacher, teaching from 1939 until 1968 in the Pike County School Systems with his main tenure in the Langley Schools. He received his degree from Henderson State Teachers College in 1956. He served Pike County as state representative from 1952-1958. He was a member of the Buffalo Gap Masonic Lodge #484 where he served as secretary for 66 years. He was a member of the Daisy Church of Christ where he served as elder. He enjoyed hunting where from 1965 until 2005 he never missed an elk hunt in New Mexico. He was also an avid Razorback fan, enjoyed traveling, playing golf and had mastered the art of telling stories to anyone who would listen.
He is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, John and Linda Austin of Baker City, Oregon; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Judy Hobson of Springdale, Sandra and Mike Pinson of Daisy and Gayle and Terry Doster of Kirby; thirteen grandchildren and spouses, Craig and Cheryl Austin of Wilsonville, Oregon, Tim and Leslie Austin of Nampa, Idaho, Launa and Jeff Morphew of Langley, Caryn and Brad Pierce of Springdale, Laura and Randy Golden of Daisy, Paul Doster of Kirby, Lesli and Kyle Efird of Umpire, Alice Hobson of Springdale, Jennifer and Chris Watkins of Baker City, Oregon, Teresa and Scotty Hardage of Kirby, Danny and Aimee Hobson of Rogers, Kari and Scott Lowrey of Kirby and Kimberly and Ricky Pennington of Kirby; twenty-three great-grandchildren, Ali and Cole Austin, Luke and Lily Austin, Austin and Sydney Pierce, Jack Baird, Caleb, Ty and Blake Anderson, Thomas and Samuel Morphew, Lauran and CaSandra Golden, Melina Lovett, Samantha and Tristan Deputy, Camryn Johnson, Alexandra Efird, Benjamin and Maggie Hardage, Taryn and Chandler Brinkley Lowrey; one great-great-grandchild, Spencer Crain; one sister-in-law, Jessie Austin of Glenwood; a special family member, Ray Counts of Mena; several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services were held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, January 4, 2006 at the Langley Hall Church with Roger Cox, Ed Coffman and Randy Jones officiating.
Visitation was Tuesday evening, 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM.
Interment was in the Langley Hall cemetery under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Pallbearer were Randy Austin, Craig Austin, Tim Austin, Paul Doster, Danny Hobson, Thomas Morphew, Sam Morphew and Benjamin Hardage.
Honorary pallbearers were all past basketball teams and students of Langley Public Schools, members of the Buffalo Gap Masonic Lodge #484, members of the Daisy Church of Christ, Leroy Linville, Ray Linville, Jackie Pinson, Jimmy Jones, Randy Jones, Reggie Jones, Dr. Clay Ferguson, Dr. Sam Peebles, and the nurses and staff of Howard Memorial Hospital.

William Thomas (Bill) Phillips
Mr. William Thomas (Bill) Phillips, age 92, a long time resident of De Queen, died Friday, December 30, 2005 at the St. Michael Hospital in Texarkana.
He was born on June 21, 1913 in the Chapel Hill Community to Ira Douglas Phillips and Mittie Lee Evans Phillips.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, his loving wife Lola of 70-1/2 years, a son-in-law, Mel Johnson, a brother-in-law, Virgil McRae, and a sister-in-law, Estha McKinney.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law: Billy and Joy Phillips of Texarkana, Arkansas, and Chuck and Ruth Phillips of Denver, Colo.; a daughter, Daina Johnson of De Queen, Arkansas; six grandsons and wives: Todd and Karen Phillips, Brant and Estelle Phillips, and Drew Phillips, all of Denver, Colorado, Mike and Elizabeth Phillips of Dallas, Texas, Melvin Johnson of Redwater, Texas, and Brad and Amanda Johnson of Texarkana, Texas; three granddaughters and husbands: Cindy and Philip Robinson, Melanie Phillips of the Dallas area, and Crystal and Tim Sharp of De Queen, Arkansas; six great-granddaughters, Lindi Yates, Megan and Malinda Robinson, Fallon Phillips and Faith Phillips, and Guinevere Doss; five great-grandsons: Timothy and Johnathan Sharp, Aaron and Mayson Johnson, and Texas Mitchell Johnson; two brothers and wives: Ira Lloyd and Miranda Phillips of Longview, Texas, and Ralph (Jake) and Eunice Phillips of Texarkana, Texas; two sisters: Claudell McRae and Bobbie Cliff of De Queen; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Mr. Phillips grew up in the Chapel Hill Community, graduated from De Queen High School where he played all sports, with football being his passion. He coached the Leopards in 1944 and 45 and opened the Bill Phillips Grocery Market and The Leopard Inn in the early fifties. He was a retired salesman and served 14 years as chairman of the Salvation Army. He loved football and fishing. He was a master Mason of Lodge #461, a Shriner and a long time member of the First United Methodist Church. He loved his family and friends.
Services for Mr. Phillips were held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Rocky Starnes and Rev. Tim Bowlin officiating. Burial followed in the Chapel Hill cemetery.
The family received friends from 6:00 to 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 3, at the funeral home.

Essie Marie McDonald
Mrs. Essie Marie Pickett McDonald, age 86, resident of Horatio, died Wednesday, Jan. 4, 2006 in Little River Memorial Hospital, Ashdown.
She was born October 16, 1919 at Horatio to James Edward and Ida Matilda Griffin Pickett; was a member of the Nix Chapel Church of the Nazarene; and a homemaker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, Joseph Wothern McDonald, and two sons, Donald Charles McDonald and James H. McDonald.
She is survived by two sons, Junior McDonald of Lockesburg, and Joe McDonald of Horatio; five daughters, Sue Bennett of Houma, La.; Wanda Bagwell of Arlington, Tex.; Billie Ramasco, Joyce Brewer, and Varda Bohannon, all of Horatio, 21 grandchildren, and 32 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, Jan 7 in Old Center Church with Rev. J.L. Walker and Bro. George Crumbly officiating. Burial followed in Old Center cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
The family received friends at the funeral home from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Friday, January 6th.
Carruth H. Green
Carruth H. Green, age 84, resident of Hope, and formerly of Dierks, died Monday, Jan. 9, 2006, at the Hope hospital.
He was born Feb. 20, 1921, at Mineral Springs, to the late Henry H. and Lillie Bell Young Green; was a member of Dierks United Methodist Church; a World War II Naval veteran; worked for the Civilian Conservation Corps; was retired after 35 years at Weyerhaeuser; a 32nd degree Mason; served on Dierks School Board for 20 years; a contractor for the Corp of Engineers; a brick mason; and an electrician.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy Green; two brothers, Thurman and Hugh Green; and one sister, Coreda Green.
He is survived by two sons, Rodney Green of Dierks and Robin Green of Arkadelphia; four daughters, Rita Hunter of Hot Springs, Dena Hampton of Hope, Pamela Hires of Monroe, La., and Lori Hunt of Hughes Springs, Texas; one brother, William Lowell Green of Sacramento, Calif.; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, Jan 11, at Dierks United Methodist Church, with Rev. Gary Wiles officiating. Burial followed in Belleville cemetery, under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home, Nashville.
The family received friends at the funeral home, Tuesday, Jan. 10, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.

James Alfred Shipman
James Alfred "Jim" Shipman, age 81, resident of Snyder, Texas, died Wednesday, Jan. 11, 2006 in Covenant Medical Center at Lubbock.
He was born Sept. 24, 1024 in Horatio; married
Georgia Ruth McCollum on Nov. 28, 1964; was a retired gang foreman working for Universal Oil for 19 years and Pearson-Sibert Oil for 19 years; served as a gunner's mate on the U.S.S. Bouganville in World War II; and was a member of the American Legion and the VFW.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia Ruth Shipman in 1991.
He is survived by a daughter, Pamela Alvarez of Artesia, NM; two sons, Frank Waters and Larry Shipman, both of Artesian, NM; three grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; and two nieces.
Funeral service were held at 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 14 in Ave. D Baptist Church with Rev. Charles Day officiating. Burial followed in Snyder cemetery under the direction of Bell-Cypert-Seale Funeral Home.
Shirley Cottrell
Shirley Cottrell, age 73, a resident of Custer City, Okla., died early Friday morning, Dec. 16, 2005 in the United Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, Okla.
She was born December 13, 1932 in Pasa Robles, Calif. to Chester and Anita (Bayner) Sherman; and worked as a food service director in a nursing home. She was married
to Lloyd Cottrell and they had lived on a farm near Custer City.
She was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd last year.
She is survived by two daughters; Anita Marie Miller and Julie Miller, of Texarkana; and three sons, Peter Miller of Cayucos, Calif., Tommy Miller of Lockesburg, and Paul Miller of California.
Private services were held.
