Cleo Patra Lowery-Merrick

Ms. Cleo Patra Lowery-Merrick, age 90, resident of Horatio, died Sunday, July 3, 2005 in a local nursing home.

She was born Nov. 16, 1914 at Horatio; was a retired cook with the Horatio Public School System; a member of Mt. Zion United Methodist Church; and a choir member.

She is survived by seven sons, Wellayne Lowery of New Orleans, La., Donald Dean Lowery of Phoenix, Ariz., Ulacees Lowery of Texarkana, Leonard Lowery of Killeen, Tex., Richard Lee Lowery of Horatio, Orville W. Lowery of New Orleans, La., and James Merrick of Chicago, Ill.; seven daughters, Bonnie L. Cox of Texarkana, Louise White of Chicago, Ill, Faye Wilburn of Denver, Colo., Connie Sargeant of Pine Bluff, Gloria Merrick of Hope, Sadie Mitchell of Little Rock, and Carla Ruelene Hold of Wichita, Kan.; 47 grandchildren; and 71 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7 in Mt. Zion United Methodist Church at Horatio with Rev. Curtis Smith officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Acres cemetery under the direction of Haynes Mortuary of Texarkana.

Visitation was from 1 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, July 6 at the funeral home.

Viewing was from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, July 7 at the church.

Ethel Brackett

Mrs. Ethel Dermon Brackett, age 98, resident of De Queen, died Saturday, July 9, 2005 in Brookewood Nursing Center.

She was born May 12, 1907 in Yell County to Elmer and Rhodie Jane Dermon; was a homemaker; and a Baptist.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Brackett; one son, Raymond DeChamps; three brothers; two sisters; one granddaughter; and one great-grandson.

She is survived by one daughter, Ruth Runyan of Horatio; one son, Jimmy Brackett of Dalton, Calif.; two grandchildren; and a number of great and great-great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 12 in Clear Creek cemetery with Rev. J.L. Walker officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

Desiree Lana Snyder

Desiree Lana Snyder, age 16, resident of De Queen, died Thursday, July 8, 2005 in a automobile accident on Highway 70 W. of De Queen.

She was born Feb. 3, 1989 at Pauls Valley, Okla., to Ricky Allen and Stephanie Deana Mewszel Snyder; was a former student at Calera High School in Calera, Okla., and was a student at Eagletown High School in Eagletown, Okla.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Allan Snyder.

She is survived by her mother, Stephanie Tillery of De Queen; her father and stepmother, Rick A. and Rhnea Snyder of Davis, Okla.; her stepfather, Sammy Tillery of Colbert, Okla.; her brothers and sisters, Dakotah Tillery of Colbert, Okla., Tiffany Snyder of Durant, Okla., Joden Snyder of David, Okla., Bridget James of Norman, Okla., and Hayli James of Ardmore, Okla.; her grandparents, Corrine Johnson of Davis, Okla., and Sam and Christine Tillery of Sulphur, Okla.; and her great-grandmother, Katie Reynen of Davis, Okla.

Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, July 11 in the Calera High School auditorium at Calera, Okla. Burial followed in Greenhill cemetery at Davis, Okla., under the direction of Brown Funeral Service, Durant, Okla. Local arrangements by Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Christopher S. Kitchens

Christopher Scott Kitchens, age 24, resident of Umpire, died Saturday, June 25, 2005, in Arkadelphia.

He was born on Saturday, Aug. 23, 1980 in Hot Springs to Scott and Debbie Kitchens; was a sergeant in Alpha Co. 489th Engineering Battalion of the Army Reserved of Hot Springs; served in Operation Iraqi Freedom for one tour of duty; and was a member of Athens Missionary Baptist Church.

He is survived by his parents; one sister, Jessi Kitchens of Umpire; his grandparents, Larry and Belva Pinkerton and Dorman and Rogerlene Kitchens, all of Umpire; his great-grandmother, Ova Pinkerton of Dierks; and one nephew.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 28 at Athens Missionary Baptist Church with Bro. Travis Lane and Bro. Don Vaughn officiating. Burial followed in Athens cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home at Dierks.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, June 27 at the funeral chapel in Dierks.

Ora Mae Wise

Mrs. Ora Mae Hodges Lewis Wise, age 84, resident of Heavener, Okla., and formerly of De Queen, died Saturday, July 23, 2005 in Heavener.

She was born March 27, 1921 in De Queen to Robert and Euta Richmond Hodges Sr.; was retired from Ouachita National Forest Service; a homemaker; and attended Geneva Missionary Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, James Richmond Hodges; a sister, Mary Faye Baker; and her husband, Rod Wise.

She is survived by two sons, David Lewis of Hodgen, Okla., and Brock Lewis of Waggoner, Okla.; one daughter, Beatrice Campbell of Hodgen, Okla.; two brothers, Robert Hodges Jr. of Horatio and Ruel Hodges of De Queen; nine grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, July 26 in Mt. Ida cemetery with Rev. George Frachiseur officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Gene Francis Diehl

Gene Francis Diehl, age 59, resident of Gillham, died Saturday, June 18, 2005 in De Queen Medical Center.

He was born Feb. 28, 1946 at Los Angeles, Calif., to Glenn and Ruth Clemon Diehl; and was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by three sons, Gene F. Diehl Jr. of Oaks, Calif., Timothy Eugene Diehl of Clovis, Calif., and Glenn F. Diehl of San Bernardino, Calif.; two daughters, Genna Ann Parker of Oaks, Calif., and Deborah Jean Dawson of San Bernardino, Calif.; three brothers, Don, Richard and Lloyd Diehl; three sisters, Glenna Darnell, Diane and Carol Diehl, all of California; and 12 grandchildren.

Cremation arrangements are under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Mr. John Vance

Mr. John Roberson Vance, age 86, resident of Grannis, began eternal life, Tuesday, June 28, 2005 in the De Queen Medical Center, De Queen.

He was born to John and Hattie Rogers Vance at Mexico, Missouri, on July 26, 1918. He entered the U.S. Army Air Corps and was a veteran of World War II and Korean Conflict, and was one of the original to form today's U.S. Air Force, retiring with 23 years service. He was a retired employee of USDA and a retired Farmers Insurance Agent in Grannis. He was a member of the Revival Center Church at Cove, Arkansas, a Grannis City Council member, and a 32 degree Mason. He enjoyed trading cars, being with people, and his family.

John was preceded in death by his parents; two daughters, Diane Davis and Karol Hall; a grandson, Tommy Cockrell; a sister, Hallie Vance; and his wife, Thelma Jean "Sissy" Vance.

He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Rex and Nancy Vance of Orange, Califinoria; Sam and Cindy Ahrens of De Queen; three daughters and sons-in-law, Rita and Steve Moore of Ft. Worth, Texas, Debbie and Paul Melton of Grannis, Arkansas, and Kim and Benny Parks of Wickes, Arkansas; 17 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; special adopted friends, Bonita and Junior Flint and Joy and Richard Palomaris; and a very special friend, Mary Whitehurst.

Funeral services for Mr. John Vance were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, June 30, 2005 in the Revival Center Church of Cove, Arkansas with Bro. Benny Parks and Bro. Reginald Fryar officiating. Burial followed in the Joe Slater Memorial Gardens at Wright City, Oklahoma under the direction of Chandler Funeral home, De Queen.

Richard Wallace

Richard Wallace, age 65, resident of Monticello, died Sunday, June 26, 2005 in Drew Memorial Hospital.

He was born March 6, 1940 at Hamburg; was an Associate Professor of Accounting at UAM; a Certified Public Accountant; and a deacon at Pauline Missionary Baptist Church where he has served as church treasurer since 1969.

He was preceded in death by his father, Guy R. Wallace.

He is survived by his wife, Carol Sue Locke Wallace of Monticello; two sons, Robert Wallace of Henderson, Tex., and Russell Wallace of Monticello; one daughter, Rhonda Huffman of San Antonio, Tex.; his mother, Edna Louise Riley Wallace of Hamburg; one brother, Randolph Wallace of El Dorado; two sisters, Nancy Bryant of Idabel, Okla., and Edna Mae Carlton of De Queen; and six grandchildren.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 29 in Pauline Missionary Baptist Church in Monticello. Burial followed in Promise Land cemetery in Ashley County, under the direction of Stephenson-Dearman Funeral Home of Monticello.
