Betty Winton
Mrs. Betty Jean Winton, age 79, a resident of De Queen, died Friday, Sept. 29, 2006 in the De Queen Medical Center.
She was born Oct. 14, 1926 in Shreveport, La. to Henry Newel and Clara "Dolly" Spencer Griffin and was a member of the Beacon Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her stepfather, Odis Rusk; a brother, O.D. Rusk and a sister, Catherine Montgomery.
She is survived by her husband, Russell Oakley Winton of De Queen; two daughters, Dianne Campbell and Cathie Barrington, both of De Queen; one sister, Pat Wolcott of De Queen; four grandchildren; six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, Oct. 2 in the Beacon Hill cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Beacon Hill Seventh Day Adventist Church of the Memorial Missionary Baptist Church.
Philip John (P.J.) Smith
Philip John Smith, age 20, a resident of Lockesburg, died Saturday, November 26, 2005 as a result of a hunting incident south of Lockesburg.
He was born at De Queen, Arkansas, on August 13, 1985. He was a 2003 graduate of Lockesburg High School and was a welder for OxBodies, Nashville, Arkansas.
He was a member of the Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and had a passion for hunting, fishing, and sports.
He was preceded in death by his great-grandfather, Philip Gordon, Sr.
He is survived by his parents, Anna Gordon Smith of Lockesburg, and John and Shelba Smith of Lockesburg; two cousins, Michael Wayne Dean, Jr. and Tiffany Dean both of Lockesburg; two brothers, Chris "Spud" Smith of Lockesburg, and Josh Smith of De Queen; four sisters, Angela Cassady of De Queen; Becky Smith, Jessica Turner, and Felecia Smith all of Lockesburg; his maternal grandparents, Philip, Jr. and Tava Gordon of Lockesburg; his paternal grandparents, Raymond and Jeanette Smith and Ernestine and Alton Clay and Boyd and Evelyn Roberts all of Lockesburg; his maternal great-grandparents, Allen and Lillie McWhorter and Billie Gordon all of Lockesburg; maternal aunts and uncles, Sissy and Kelly Golden of Cordele, Georgia, and Rose and Mike Dean of Lockesburg; nieces, Laken Cassady, Laney Smith, and Taylor Smith; an uncle, Scott Smith; and a nephew Dalton Smith.
Funeral services for Mr. P.J. Smith were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, December 1, 2005 in the Old Union Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Wesley Blankenship and Rev. Wallace Wooten officiating. Burial followed in the Old Union cemetery, under direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen, Ark. The family received friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 30th at the funeral home.
Paul Wayne Burney
Mr. Paul Wayne Burney, age 67, resident of Texarkana, Arkansas, formerly of Foreman, Arkansas, died November 13, 2005 surrounded by his family in Wadley Hospital, Texarkana.
He was born February 8, 1938 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma, to Otho and Ida Mae Wineiger Burney, who later made their home in Cerro Gordo, Oklahoma, where Paul grew up. He completed his academic education in Horatio Schools and Henderson State University at Arkadelphia.
Paul married
Layvonne Abney and they made their home in Foreman, Arkansas for years until their retirement. He was a self-employed businessman involved in many businesses, but possibly remembered most by the Burney-Ashford Chevrolet Dealership in Foreman, Arkansas.
He was always a leader and active in community church, and school activities. He enjoyed sports, participating and supporting the activities. He coached in the Little League as his boys grew, then following their trail as both were active in rodeo activities. He was very family oriented, enjoyed traveling, and loved doing electronics and visiting with friends and relatives.
Paul was preceded in death by his parents, his grandparents, Luther and Pearl Burney of Cerro Gordo, Okla., Charles and Ora Bell Wineinger of Broken Bow, Okla. He was also preceded by his brother-in-law, Howard Clem Wall of Cerro Gordo.
He is survived by his wife, Layvonne Abney Burney to whom he was married
45 years; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Randy Burney of Foreman, Ark. and Mike and Robin Burney of Cerro Gordo; one sister, Claryce Burney Wall of Cerro Gordo; five grandchildren, Tell Burney, Jordan Burney, Kristen, Bailee and Jaycee; nieces, nephews, and other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services for Mr. Burney were held at the State Line Baptist Church, Cerro Gordo, Ark. on Thursday, November 17, 2005 at 10:00 a.m. with Virgil Romine, minister, and Rev. J.L. Walker officiating.
Burial followed in the Cerro Gordo cemetery under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. The family received friends at Madden Funeral Home, Foreman on Tuesday, November 15 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Mr. Burney lay in state at Chandler Funeral Home on Wednesday, November 16. The family was at the home of Mike and Robin Burney, Cerro Gordo, Okla.
Raymond Louis Pool
Mr. Raymond Louis "Buddy" Pool, age 84, a resident of Lockesburg, Ark. died Sunday, November 20, 2005 in De Queen.
He was born June 9, 1921 in Lockesburg to Byrd and Grace Cannon Wood Pool. He was retired from the U.S. Army where he served during World War II and the Korean War. He was a Mason and a member of the Methodist Church.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Jettie Lois Wright Pool; a brother, Robert Pool; and a sister, Mary Ella Roberts.
He is survived by his wife, Alma Taylor Pickens Pool; two children, Louis Ray Pool (Chris) of Ocala, Fla., and Lois Fay Maaks (Duane) of Charleston, Ill.; his grandchildren, Jeffrey Maaks (Monica) St. Louis, Mo., Jennifer Maaks of Herrin, Ill., Jill Thrapp (Scott) of Marion, Ill., Cory Pool (Rachel) of Ocala, Fla., Brendan Pool (Beth) of Pensacola, Fla., and Brianne Pool of Ocala, Fla.; his great-grandchildren, Danielle Maaks of St. Louis, Mo., Dylan Green of Herrin, Ill., and Cameron Thrapp of Marion, Ill.
Funeral services for Mr. Pool were held at 1:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 22, 2005 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Wesley Blankenship officiating. Burial followed in the Belleville cemetery, Lockesburg.
The family received friends from 6-8 p.m. Monday, November 21, 2005 at the funeral home.
R. G. Gray
R.G. Gray, age 88, resident of Little Rock and formerly of De Queen, died Wednesday, Oct. 19, 2005 in Little Rock.
He was born Dec. 23, 1916 at Booneville; was a member of St. Paul Methodist Church in Little Rock; worked for the De Queen Bee Company, the Calvert McBride Printing Inc. in Ft. Smith, and Parkin Printing Inc. in Little Rock.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Lucille Hopson Gray of Little Rock; two daughters, Eleanor Cox of Memphis, Tenn., and Doris Boone of Oxford, Miss.; one sister, Roberta Carr of Maumelle; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 22 in St. Paul Methodist Church, Little Rock. Graveside services were held at 2:30 p.m. in Oak Hill cemetery, Booneville, under the direction of Lewis Funeral Chapel, Ft. Smith.

Rose Mary Boles
Rose Mary Boles, age 49, resident of De Queen, died at her home.
She was born July 15, 1956 in Cooper, Tex.; and was a homemaker.
She is survived by two sons, Vernon Ray and Ricky Joshua Ray of De Queen; three brothers, Lee Boles and Nolan Boles of De Queen and Toby Boles of Yorktown, Tex.; three sisters, Darlene Salinas, Nancy Easlon and Janice Sellers of De Queen; and one grandson.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. Cremation will be under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
Mrs. LaNelle Cassel Cox
Mrs. LaNelle Cassel Cox, age 81, resident of Horatio, died Friday, Nov. 4, 2005 at her home.
She was born Dec. 6, 1923 at Winnsboro, Tex., to John L. and Annie Alta Beck Cassel; was a member of First United Methodist Church of Horatio; owned and operated a cattle ranch in Little River County with her husband; was retired owner and operator of the Storehouse in Horatio; and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Eldon Cassell; a sister, Mildred Hennsey; and her husband, Raymond Cox in 1993.
She is survived by two daughters, Ann Cox Lange of Horatio and LaRay Cox of Palestine, Tex.; three grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 1 p.m. Monday, Nov. 7 in Horatio cemetery with Rev. J.L. Walker and Rev. Fred Smith officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Raymond and LaNelle Cox scholarship fund at Horatio State Bank.
