Verna Marie Bradshaw

Mrs. Verna Marie Rogers Bradshaw, age 78, resident of De Queen, died Sunday, March 23, 2003 in De Queen.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 26 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Oscar Ball officiating. Burial will follow in Mt. Ida cemetery.

She was born Aug. 16.1924 in Stroud, Okla., to Ed and Minnie Hammond Rogers; was a homemaker; and a member of Lone Oak Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, William Douglas Bradshaw of De Queen; one son, David Bradshaw of De Queen; two daughters, Linda Niemeyer of Maud, Tex., and Carolyn Sue Bradshaw of De Queen; six grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Tuesday, March 25 at the funeral home.

Mr. Dean Atkins

Mr. Charles Dean Atkins, Sr., age 78, resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Thursday, July 17, 2003, in the De Queen Regional Medical Center, De Queen.

He was born to Jessie Parrish and Mary Mossillia Best Atkins, at Willisville, Arkansas, on January 17, 1925. He was a charter member of the Old Time Missionary Baptist Church of De Queen. He was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, former Assistant Yell County Agent at Danville, Arkansas, and was retired from SWEPCO with 30 years service, as well as a farmer. He was past president of De Queen Rotary Club, a member of the Chamber of Commerce, had served on the County School Board, and on the Soil Conservation Board.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Mattie Jean Atkins, and a daughter, Chylene Atkins.

He is survived by his wife, Jo Flowers Atkins of De Queen; three sons and daughters-in-law: Mike Atkins; Patti Atkins; Chuck and Karen Atkins; and J. P. and Lisa Atkins; all of De Queen, Arkansas; nine grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services for Mr. Dean Atkins were held at 2:00 p.m., Saturday, July 19, 2003 in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Lane Garner, Bro. Elmer Grant, and Bro. Mike Durham officiating. Burial followed in Redmen cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen. The family was at the Atkins home, located at 1406 North 7th Street, De Queen.

Rubert "Shorty" Tollett

Rubert Carl "Shorty" Tollett, age 85, resident of Lockesburg, died Monday, July 21, 2003 in De Queen Regional Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 23 in Old Union Missionary Baptist Church. Burial followed in Old Piney cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

He was born May 30, 1918 in Lockesburg; was a retired logger from Weyerhaeuser; and a member of Old Union Missionary Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his wife, Ophelia Baker Tollett; his parents, Mark and Florence Harder Tollett; one son, Roy Wendell Tollett; four brothers, Grover Tollett, Lloyd Tollett, Edgar Tollett and Robert Tollett; and one sister, Katie Tollett Janes.

He is survived by two daughters, Wanda "Judy" Lott and Darlene Gilbert, both of Lockesburg; two brothers, Truman Tollett of Lockesburg and Ruben Tollett of De Queen; five grandchildren; four step-grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and two step-great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 22 at the funeral home.

Gus Bumphus

Gus Bumphus, age 84, resident of Horatio, died Friday, July 18, 2003 in the VA Hospital at Little Rock.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 26 in Mt. Zion Methodist Church in Horatio with Rev. Curtis Smith officiating. Burial followed in Sunset Acres cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

He was born Jan. 22, 1919 in the West Otis community near Horatio; was a sawmill worker; a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church; and a U.S. Army veteran. He was predeceased by his parents, Seabron and Arah Bezell Bumphus.

He is survived by a number of nieces and nephews.

David H. Ruth

Mr. David Henry Ruth, age 57, resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Monday, July 21, 2003 at his home.

He was born to Ernest and Rosia M. Blackburn Ruth at Brinkley, Arkansas, on December 1, 1945. He was a veteran of the Vietnam War, having served in the U.S. Army, and was a truck driver. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and riding motorcycles.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother: Donald Ruth; and two sisters: Mary Louise Ruth and Ruby Ellen Ruth.

He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law: Amanda and Travis Whittington of Pine Ridge, Arkansas, and Tammy and David Porter of Caddo Gap, Arkansas; two brothers and sister-in-law: Gene and Wanda Ruth of De Queen; and Leonard Ruth of Horatio; four grandchildren: Dakota, Tabitha, Jonathan, and Brandon; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside funeral services for Mr. David H. Ruth will be held at 10:00 a.m., July 25, 2003 in the Chapel Hill cemetery with Rev. Wesley Blankenship officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen.

Sheila Hall-Knapp

Sheila Ann Hall-Knapp, age 31, resident of Glenwood, died Friday, July 11, 2003 in Hot Springs.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, July 14 in Hickory Grove cemetery near Dierks with Rev. Kenny Fant officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

She was born March 14, 1972 in Monticello; and was an employee of Real Deal Pawn Shop in Glenwood.

She is survived by two sons, Kyle Knapp and Stephen Knapp; one daughter, Breanna Knapp; her parents, Bruce and Jeannie Stephens of Dierks; two sisters, Sharron Fisher of De Queen and Sara Coulter of Umpire; her grandparents, Annie Hall of Paris and Loy Jones of Dierks; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Anna Clara Neal

Anna Clara Smith Neal, age 62, resident of New Hope, died Saturday, July 19, 2003 at her home.

Graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, July 21 in Bear Creek cemetery with Rev. Bobby Neal officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.

She was born Aug. 16, 1940 in Hardwell, Vt., to Howard and Arelia Barcumb Smith; and was a Nurse’s Aide.

She is survived by four sons, Ralph Pender and Michael Duke, both of New Hope, and Ronny Pender and Werner Duke, both of Nashville; two brothers, Sonny Smith of Vermont and Bill Breed of Farmersville, La.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Lucy Margaret Plunk

Lucy Margaret Challis Plunk, age 76, resident of Blackwell, Okla., died Friday, July 1, 2003 in Bass Medical Center in Enid, Okla.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 15 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Dale Hankins officiating. Burial followed in Clear Creek cemetery in Horatio.

She was born June 20, 1927 in Bridgeport, Okla., to Roy and Ruby Pedigo Challis; was a homemaker; and a member of First Freewill Baptist Church in Blackwell. She was predeceased by her parents; her husband, Sherman Plunk; and one daughter, Wanda Cole.

She is survived by six daughters, Margaret Stocker of Glenco, Okla., Shirley Throneburg of Clyde, Tex., Ruby Davis of Ponca City, Okla., Pat Cockerman of Maude, Tex., Doris Key of Blackwell, Okla., and Kay Higgins of Ponca City, Okla.; three sons, Sherman Plunk of Idabel, Okla., Billy Plunk of Ponca City, Okla., and Jimmy Plunk of Blackwell, Okla.; six sisters; three brothers; 73 grandchildren; 67 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, July 14 at the funeral home.
