Harold L. Turner

Harold L. Turner, age 77, resident of De Queen, died Saturday, June 14, 2003 in Brookewood Nursing Home.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 18 in Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Joe Carlton officiating. Burial followed in Valley cemetery at Gillham.

He was born Sept. 3, 1925 at King to Noah Milton and Alma Edna Conatser Turner; was a veteran of World War II having served in the U.S. Navy; was retired from Weyerhaeuser Company; and a member of Memorial Missionary Baptist Church of De Queen. He was predeceased by his parents; four sisters; and a son, Harold Lee Turner Jr.

He is survived by his wife, Mae Velma Smith Turner of De Queen; one son, Norman Cecil Turner of De Queen; one daughter, Mary Belle Elliott of Gate City, Va.; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mary Jo McDougal

Mrs. Mary Jo McDougal, age 59, resident of Ashdown, died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at her home.

Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 17 in Wilton cemetery with Rev. John Henry Williams and Rev. Jackie Adams officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

She was born Aug. 9, 1943 in Texarkana to Cecil and Burline Wells; was a homemaker; and a Baptist. She was predeceased by her mother.

She is survived by her husband, Harold McDougal of Ashdown; three sons, Burl Wells McDougal of Avery, Tex., Billy Burcham McDougal of Texarkana, and Bobby Gene McDougal of Ashdown; her fa-ther, Cecil Wells of Ashdown; one sister, Cecilene Sams of Ashdown, seven grandchildren; and one nephew.

The family received friends from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Monday, June 16 at the funeral home.

LaVerne Cannon Snead

LaVerne Cannon Snead, age 76, resident of Ashdown, died Sunday, June 22, 2003 in Texarkana, Tex.

Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 25 in First Baptist Church in Ashdown with Rev. Butch Riddle and Rev. Jackie Adams officiating. Burial folloed in Belleville cemetery near Lockesburg under the direction of Madden Funeral Services, Inc. of Ashdown.

She was born March 21, 1927 in Lockesburg; and was a member of First Baptist Church in Ashdown and the Arkansas Realtors Association. She was predeceased by her husband, Taylor D. "Chick" Snead Jr.

She is survived by four sons, Mike Snead, Stanley Snead, Terry Snead and Roger Snead, all of Ashdown; one sister, Irene Gentry of Stamps; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a number of nephews.

Ethel Belle Roberts

Ethel Belle Roberts, age 89, resident of Lockesburg, died Saturday, June 14, 2003 in Wadley Regional Medical Center in Texarkana, Tex.

Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, June 16 in Belleville Methodist Church with Rev. J.R. Callicott officiating. Burial followed in Belleville cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

She was born April 14, 1914 in the Milford Community near Lockesburg to Charlie and Agg Poole Beavers; and was a Methodist. She was predeceased by her husband, Austin Roberts on Nov. 9, 1981; and a grandson, Griff Griffin.

She is survived by one son, Jerry Roberts of Texarkana; two daughters, Laura Griffin of Lockesburg and Carolyn Klein of Texarkana, Tex.; one sister, Grace Irene Nettuno of Houston, Tex.; six grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Memorials may be made to Milford Church in Lockesburg.

Doris McKeehan

Mrs. Doris Cannon McKeehan, age 87, a resident of Horatio, died Sunday, June 29, 2003 in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana.

She was born September 28, 1915 in Lockesburg to Grover and Ann Ray Cannon. She was a retired nurse from the De Queen Regional Medical Center, attended the Horatio First Assembly of God, was a member of DAR, a Charter Member of the Tri-Lakes Good Sams, and a member of the De Queen Regional Medical Center Hospital Auxiliary.

Mrs. McKeehan was preceded in death by one son: Jim Stafford.

She is survived by her husband: John McKeehan of Horatio; one son: Thomas Stafford of Hot Springs; one daughter: Frances Hedgecock of Hamburg, Arkansas; one daughter-in-law: Debbie Brotherton of De Queen; two sisters: Norma Bedwell of Nashville, Arkansas and Ann May of Shreveport, Louisiana; three grandchildren: Allison Shepherd of Dumas, Jennifer Bickel of Cheyenne, Wyo-ming, and Nancy Miller of Bloomfield, Colorado; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mrs. McKeehan were held at 10:00 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, 2003 in the Horatio Assembly of God, with Rev. J. L. Walker officiating. Burial followed in the Lockesburg cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.

Herbert Glenn Frederick

Herbert Glenn Frederick, age 72, resident of Ashdown, died Saturday, June 21, 2003 in Little River Memorial Hospital in Ashdown.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, June 24 in Lockesburg cemetery with Rev. Wesley Blankenship officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

He was born Sept. 28, 1930 in De Queen to Oliver Sr. and Maggie Mae Wilder Frederick; and was a Baptist.

He is survived by one brother, Oliver Frederick Jr. of Ft. Smith; one sister, Mildred Tipton of Dierks; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Wanda Taylor

Mrs. Wanda Lee Taylor, age 66, a resident of Lockesburg, died Thursday, June 26, 2003 at her home.

Graveside funeral services for Mrs. Taylor were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 2, in the Belleville cemetery with Rev. Wesley Blankenship officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

She was born June 15, 1937 in Commanche, Tex., to Guernsey and Ilene Richardson Hornsby. She was a homemaker and a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her husband: Roy B. Taylor of Lockesburg; one son: Eugene Taylor of Gillham; one daughter: Linda Stubbs of Allen, Tex.; three sisters: Bina Moore of Arlington, Tex., Betty McGath of Springfield, Mo., and Mona Yancy of Proctor, Tex.; one brother: Rex Hornsby of Ft. Worth, Tex.; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Richard B. Tallman Sr.

Richard B. Tallman Sr., age 84, resident of Horatio, died Thursday, July 3, 2003 at his home.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, July 4 in Millwee cemetery with Rev. J.L. Walker officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.

He was born June 1, 1919 in Horatio to Thomas Bert and Mary Addie Burns Tallman; was a veteran of World War II; a retired Sevier County Road Department employee; and a Methodist.

He is survived by his wife, Clyta Gore Tallman; one son, Dick Tallman of Horatio; two daughters, Mildred Walker of Horatio and Linda Hedden of Little Rock; six grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

John Edker Ward Sr.

John Edker Ward Sr., age 83, of Horatio, passed away on Monday, June 30, 2003.

John served in the CB unit during WWII in Alaska and in Guam. He was a suc-cessful construction man and loving father. He was instrumental in saving several lives while putting his own life in danger to do so. John earned civil commendations from several presidents for his community service in the area and was extended an invitation from the White House to attend Jimmy Carter's Inauguration. He became a First Degree Mason in Alaska, being initiated in 1946. John was also instrumental in starting the Civil Defense Unit in Sevier county, making sure civic and recreational grants were appropriated in the area. Mr. Ward was well respected by all those who knew him best and will be deeply missed.

Born December 13, 1919, he was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Ivy Ward; wife, Perlene Ward; brothers and sisters, C. L. (Andy) Ward of Dierks, Allie L. Matthews of Hot Springs, William J. Ward of Horatio, Erman A. Ward of Texas, and infant sister, Susie B. Ward of Horatio; and a special grandson, Gus Evans of Malvern.

Survivors are his five children, Olivia P. Sharp of De Queen, Rita A. Evans of Malvern, John E. Ward Jr. of Alamogordo, NM, Shirley J. Stewart of Fayetteville, Samuel L. Ward of Winthrop; eight brothers and sisters, Orphey P. Coffman of Texas, George W. Ward of Horatio, A. W. (Shug) Ward of Horatio, Doyle B. Ward of Texas, Tillman R. Ward of Texas, Allen A. Ward of Horatio, Quinton D. Ward of Dierks, and Oma J. Watson of Texas; 10 grandchildren, Misty Ladd, Carrie Ward, Marla Ward, Johnny Ward, Wendy Sanders, Jesse Evans, Heather Stewart, Wyatt Ward, Ashley Ward and Rachel Stewart; and one great-granddaughter, Megan Ladd.

People who wish to offer condolences to the family were welcomed at Mr. John Ward's home in Horatio. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chandler Funeral Home in De Queen with Chris Garner of Malvern officiating. Burial was in Horatio cemetery.

Donations in Memorial of Mr. John Ward's honor may be contributed to cemetery upkeep in care of Carl Stinnitt.

Louise Bennett

Louise Bennett, age 79, of Longview, Tex., passed away Sunday, July 6, 2003.

Annie was born on December 28, 1924 in Gadsden, Alabama to Joe Cefus Moore and Hattie P. Pie. On Valentine's Day in 1942 Annie married J. B. Donaldson in Piedmont, Alabama. She was a wonderful mother to nine children and retired from working with Longview ISD.

Annie is survived by sons J. B. Donaldson, Raymond Donaldson, David Donaldson, Michael Donaldson, and Bruce Bennett; daughters Sandra Slott, Sheila Platt, Janice Clark and Nita Aiken; 33 grandchildren and 49 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, July 8, 2003 at 2:30 p.m. at the Lakeview Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Jim Rust officiating. Entombment followed in Lakeview Memorial Gardens. The family received friends for visitation Monday, July 7, 2003 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the funeral home.
