Mr. John Dean Johnson
Mr. John Dean Johnson, Sr., age 70, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Wednesday, February 26, 2014, in Christus St. Michael Health System, Texarkana, Texas.
He was born to Joe Michael Johnson, Sr. and Mary Bernice Stricker Johnson in De Queen, Arkansas, on April 17, 1943. He served in the military with the National Guard, and was a retired employee of Pilgrim’s Pride. He was an active member of the Union Community Church, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, southern gospel music, and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Jackie Pike, James Johnson, and Joe Johnson, Jr., a sister, Mary Helen Koelzer.
He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Regina Kaye Higgins Johnson of De Queen, three sons and two daughters-in-law, John & Antoinette Johnson of Little Rock, Ark, Justin & Roberta Johnson of De Queen, and Jerrod Johnson of Atlanta, Georgia, a brother and sister-in-law, Lonnie and Kathy Johnson of De Queen, one sister and brother-in-law, Nell and Bill Cummings of Marshall, Wisconsin, four grandchildren, Hallie Johnson and Charlie Johnson both of Little Rock, RaNita Johnson and DeAnna Johnson both of De Queen, and a number of nieces and nephews.
The Family will receive friends and family at Union Community Church, Union Road, De Queen on Thursday, Feb. 27th from 6:00 – 7:30 P.M. Evelyn Sue Johnson
Evelyn Sue Johnson of Cherokee Village, Arkansas, age 93, passed away Monday, February 24th, 2014. Evelyn was born May 31, 1920 to parents Sanford and Laura Darnell in Sitka, Arkansas.
Evelyn leaves behind to cherish her memory, her husband; Carl Johnson of Cherokee Village, three daughters; Jo Ann Brandon and husband Dwight of Evening Shade, Janis Hobbs and husband Doug of Batesville and Pam Hendrix and husband Jim of Bentonville, seven grandchildren; Randy Brandon and Ronnie Brandon of Evening Shade, Vicky Hobbs Edwards of Hot Springs, Tammy Hobbs Burkhalter of Benton, Nancy Hobbs of De Queen, Dana Paul and Jon Davis of Bentonville. Eleven great-grandchildren; Kristin, Raylee, Tia, Tylor, Tiffany, Taylor, Caden, Reece, Brody, Jaxson and Kellen Powell, and one great-great grandchild, Elijah Douglas Edwards, as well as many other family members and host of friends all who loved her dearly and will miss her always.
Evelyn was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 57 years; Orphus H. Powell, her only son; Monty H. Powell, her second husband; Marvin Holland, 14 sibling and one grandson; Ricky Brandon
Evelyn will be fondly remembered for her good cooking, coconut pies, chocolate pies, biscuit and gravy, her sparkly clothes and her great love for her children and grandchildren. She was of the Pentecostal faith. The family would like to say a special thanks to Dr. Gregory Neaville for the exemplary care he provided for her throughout the years and especially in her final days.
Funeral services will be Thursday, February, 27th at Qualls Funeral Home in Cave City, AR with Rev. O.D. Hobbs officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday, February 26th from 6-8 at Qualls Funeral Home in Cave City, AR. Interment will follow at Powell’s Chapel Cemetery in Sharp County with Ronnie Brandon, Jon Wayne Davis, Thomas Burkhalter, Raylee Edwards and Chris Paul serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Randy Brandon, Tylor Burkhalter and Con Spurlock.
Norman Turner
Mr. Norman C. Turner, age 64, a resident of De Queen, died Tuesday, February 25th at his home.
He was born to Harold Lee and Mae Velma Smith Turner in De Queen, Arkansas, on July 20, 1949. He was a former employee of Zachary, Inc., Victoria, Texas, where he served as foreman. He was veteran of Vietnam, having served in the U.S. Army. he enjoyed woodworking and spending time with family.
He was preceded in death by his father Harold Turner, Sr., a brother, Harold Lee Turner, Jr., a sister, Mary Elliott, and a grandchild, Tannah Sparks.
He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Mae Turner of De Queen two daughters and sons-in-law: Amy and Jeremy Lockeby of De Queen and Renee and Kevin Olsen of Victoria, Texas; four sons and daughters-in-law: Troy Lee Turner of Denton, Texas, Michael and Mildred Johnson of De Queen, Joseph and Bridget Sparks of De Queen, and Daniel and Becky Sparks of Kissimmee, Florida; eleven grandchildren, including Brayden and Devaughn Shelton of De Queen; a brother-in-law, Dan Elliott of Gate City, Virginia; a special Friend, Sharon Harned of De Queen; a nephew, a, niece, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Funeral services for Mr. Norman Turner will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, February 28th in the Chandler Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Valley Cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral home.
The family will receive friends at Chandler Funeral Home on Thursday, February 27, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m.
Everett Earnest Cupples
Everett Earnest Cupples, age 91, a resident of Dierks, Arkansas, died Monday, February 24, 2014, in the Mercy Medical Center in Hot Springs.
He was born April 9, 1922 in Dierks. He was in the logging business, served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a member of the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church.
Mr. Cupples was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years, Thelma D. Chandler Cupples and his parents, Raymond Della Lowery Cupples.
He is survived by his son, Kenneth R. Cupples; one daughter, Tammie J. Yeargen; five grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services for Mr. Cupples will be held at 1:00 p.m., Friday, February 28, 2014 in the Fellowship Cemetery with Rev. Bobby Neal officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, February 27th at the funeral home in Dierks.
Harold David Bray
Mr. Harold David Bray, age 86, a resident of Dierks, Arkansas died Monday, February 24, 2014 in the Dierks Health and Rehab.
He was born April 24, 1927 in Broken Bow, Oklahoma. He was a retired sawyer with Weyerhaeuser. He served in the Army Air Force during WWII, and was a Baptist.
Mr. Bray was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene Lucille Teater Bray; parents, Arthur “Pug” and Brookie Brown Bray; two sons, David Bray and Frank Whaley; one daughter, Gail Whaley Marshall; two great grandsons, Treyton Hogg and Hunter Britt; one great-great grandson, Cade Richbourg; three brothers, Arthur Bray, Hayes Bray and Richard Bray; and one sister, Doris “Humbug” Hooper.
He is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Don and Gay Bray, and Robert and Cindy Bray, all of Dierks; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Connie and Dale Dougan of Nashville, Arkansas, Gwen Whitten of Broken Bow, Cindy Grady of Nashville and Kim and Ricky Lloyd of Dierks; five brothers and four sisters-in-law, Wilburn “Preacher” and Herlene Bray of Broken Bow, Billy and Mary Lou Bray of Bloomburg, Texas, Butch Bray, Jimmie Dale and Pat Bray and Mike and Sheila Bray, all of Broken Bow; two sisters and a brother-in-law, Augustine “Augie” Monk of Wagoner, Oklahoma and Brenda and Jim Ed Moore of Valliant, Oklahoma; 17 grandchildren, 31 great grandchildren, 5 great-great grandchildren and numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.
Funeral Services for Mr. Bray will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, February 26, 2014 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks with Rev. Kenny Fant officiating. Burial will follow in the Fellowship Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Tuesday, February 25th at the funeral home in Dierks.
Mrs. Edith Mae Bryant Knight
Mrs. Edith Mae Bryant Knight, age 92, a resident of De Queen, and former resident of Modesto, California, died Sunday, February 23, 2014 in De Queen Medical Center, De Queen.
She was born to Bryace R. and Martha Michael Bryant in Earlsboro, Oklahoma, on July 19, 1921. She was a retired employee of Stanislaus Food Products of Modesto, Calif., as well as a homemaker. She was a member of the First Baptist Church, and enjoyed crocheting, quilting, sewing, collecting dolls, yard sales, and spending time with family.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings, her husband of 60 years, William Joel Knight, two Children, Wilma Knight, and William Delton Kight, grandchildren, Richard Howard, Kayla Dyer, and a great-grandchild, DeKota Lewis.
She is survived by a son, Jack L. Knight of Modesto, California, two daughters, Madell Scudder of De Queen, and Rita Lewis of Rattan, Oklahoma, twelve grandchildren, Susan, Ronald, David, Cindy, Ricky, Christina, Benjamin, Eric, Roberta, Kyle, Mona,and Summer, twenty-six great-grandchildren, and several great-great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial Services for Mrs. Edith Knight will be held at 2:00 P.M., Monday, March 10th in the Victory Assembly of God Church, #3 Highway, Rattan, Okla. Lunch will be provided.
Wilda Joyce McCown
Wilda Joyce McCown was born on November 12, 1922 to Harry Sr. and Eula Bingham McMullen in Paden, Oklahoma. She departed this life on February 21, 2014, in Texarkana, Texas, at the age of 91 years, 3 months, and 9 days.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers, two sisters, and an infant grandson.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Clyde McCown of their home in De Queen. She leaves a son, Patrick McCown, and his wife, Joye in Calico Rock, Arkansas. She leaves two grandchildren, Cameron McCown and Robin of Meridian, Idaho, and Amelia McCown of Nampa, Idaho. She is survived by one brother, Kenneth McMullen in Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Known affectionately as “Sister Joyce” because of the selfless way she lived her life in this community; many will remember her for the revival meetings she held in churches of all denominations. She was an effective preacher and soul winner who was an ordained elder in the Church of the Nazarene. She held ministry credentials with that denomination for 62 years.
She served as pastor of the De Queen Church of the Nazarene prior to retirement and served as Industrial Chaplain for Pilgrim’s Pride Company in De Queen.
Visitation will be Wednesday, February 26th from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at Chandler Funeral Home in De Queen. Funeral services for Rev. Joyce McCown will be held Thursday, February 27th at 2:00 P.M., at Chandler Funeral Home in De Queen with Chaplain Patrick McCown, Pastor Billy Sullivan, and Pastor Byron Sullivan, and Dr. Russell Branstetter officiating.
