Marie Ester Powell
Marie Ester Powell, age 75, of Wickes, Arkansas passed away Saturday, December 21, 2013 in Texarkana, Texas.
She was born May 2, 1938 in Lisbon, Louisiana to the late Edgar Kuykendall and the late Momel Johnson Kuykendall. She was married to the late Barom Powell and was a homemaker by profession. Marie was a member of the Wickes Nazarene church in Wickes. She was a loving mother, grandmother, great- grandmother, sister, aunt and a friend to all who knew her. She will be dearly missed.
She is survived by:

William (JR) Powell and wife Regina of Vandervoort, Arkansas
Daughters: Cindy Turnbough and husband James of Wickes, Arkansas
Noreen Pierce and husband Robert of Hatton, Arkansas
Nancy House and husband Bryan of Cove, Arkansas
Sister: Stella Gathright and husband James of Lockesburg, Arkansas
Brother: Frank Kuykendall of Timpson, Texas
Fourteen grandchildren, twenty great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews
She was preceded in death by her parents, Edgar and Momel Kuykendall, husband, Barom Powell, child, Travis Powell, grandchild, Liz Turnbough, great-grandchild, Ryan Pierce, brothers , Raymond Kuykendall, James Paul Kuykendall, Floyd Kuykendall, sisters, Margarette Brock, and Helen Brock.
Graveside services will be Thursday, December 26, 2013, 2:00 p.m. at Oak Grove Cemetery in Wickes, Arkansas with Brother Leon McClesky officiating under the direction of the Beasley Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
Pallbearers will be Tanner Powell, Tristian Powell, Wayne Shelton, Waylon Shelton, John Brock, Lazaro Perez, Daniel Lindsey, and Eddie Drent.
Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Pierce, Bryan House, James Turnbough, and Corky Randall.
Jose Guadalupe Vega
Jose Guadalupe Vega, age 70, a resident of De Queen, Arkansas, died Saturday, December 21, 2013 in Texarkana, Texas.
He was born April 22, 1943 in San Lucas, Guanajuato, Mexico. He was employed by Pilgrim’s Pride and was Catholic.
Visitation for Mr. Vega will be held from 1-6 p.m., Sunday, December 22, 2013 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel.
An all-night vigil will begin at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, at the Monsignor Scott Friend Pastoral Center.
Funeral Mass will be held at 10:00 a.m. Monday, December 23, 2013 at the Pastoral Center with Father Eddy D’Almeida officiating.
James William “Willie” Irvan
Mr. James William “Willie” Irvan, age 82, a resident of Mountainburg, Arkansas, died Tuesday, December 17, 2013 in St. Edwards Mercy Hospital, Fort Smith, Arkansas.
He was born to William Henry and Maudie Ethel Collum Irvan in Horatio, Arkansas, on January 18, 1931. He was a veteran of the Korean Conflict, having served with the U. S. Air Force. He was owner and operator at Frozen Food Express, and was a Baptist. He enjoyed truck driving, hunting, fishing, and visiting with and teasing family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, E. L. Irvan, and a daughter, Patsy Irvan, and a great-granddaughter, Gabrielle Ackerman.
He is survived by his wife, Jean Irvan of Mountainburg, Arkansas, two sons and daughters-in-law, James William, Jr. “Bill” and Virginia Irvan of Mountainburg, Arkansas, and Carroll and Laura Stewart of Abbeville, Georgia, two daughters and a son-in-law, Terry DeLaGarza of New Boston, Texas, and Toni and Tracy Guymon of Waxahachie, Texas, a brother and sister-in-law, Jimmy Lee and Mary Jane Woodall of Horatio, Ark., a sister, Judy Booth of Carrolton, Texas, thirteen grandchildren, twenty-eight great-grandchildren, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services for Mr. Willie Irvan will be held at 2:00 P.M., Saturday, December 21st in the Horatio Cemetery, Horatio, Arkansas with Bro. Heath Daniel officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home, De Queen. The family will receive friends and family at Chandler Funeral Home on Friday, December 20th from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M.
J.W. Ragan
J.W. Ragan was born February 7, 1939 in O’Donnell, Texas, the son of Luther and Jewell Swan Ragan. He passed from this life December 16, 2013 at De Queen, Arkansas at the age of 74 years, 10 months and 6 days.
J.W. served in the National Guard and had lived in McCurtain County for the past 51 years, moving here from Arkansas. He was a member of the Eagletown First United Methodist Church and a retired Heavy Equipment Operator. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and working on vehicles. J.W. was also an avid OU fan. He and Ann Cockrell were united in marriage on September 2, 1962 in Eagletown.
J.W. was preceded in death by his parents and an Aunt and Uncle, Madge and Bill Davis.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife of 51 years, Ann Ragan; son and daughter-in-law, Jay and Angie Ragan of Eagletown; daughters and son-in-law, Shawn and Mike Slider of Lockesburg, Arkansas and Charlotte Bray of Haileyville, Oklahoma; brothers, Wayne Watterson of New Iberia, LA, Pete Watterson of Tucson, AZ, Butch Ragan of Splendora, TX, Jackie Ragan of Phoenix, AZ, Grady Matthews of Humble, TX, Thomas Matthews of New Iberia, LA and Cy Davis of Eagletown; sisters, Patsy Brown of Albuquerque, NM, Top Shelton and Betty Chapman Smith both of Eagletown; grandchildren, Ethan Slider, Ty Slider, Craig and Bridgette Chaney, Cara Chaney, Robert Taylor, Meshalia Ragan, Zac Ragan, Travis Ruth and Madison Yandell; great-grandchildren, Jaiden Chaney, Keaton Chaney, Kenleigh Chaney, Jacee Chaney and Damion Watson; sister-in-law, Molly Reid of Altus, Oklahoma; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Ernest and Jill Cockrell of San Jose, California, Curtis Diann Cockrell of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Dan and Karen Cockrell of Tulsa, Oklahoma; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Carl Wayne Canada
Carl Wayne Canada, age 62, a resident of Greenwood, Arkansas, died Thursday, December 12, 2013, in Little Rock, Arkansas.
He was born August 12, 1951, in Hepner, Oregon. He was retired from D&E Railroad and loved hunting, gardening and motorcycles.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Betty Pitchford Canada.
He is survived by his wife, Vicky Whitten Canada of Greenwood, Arkansas; two sons and one daughter-in-law, Josh and Daniela Canada of Wickes, Arkansas and Dustin Hennard of Little Rock, Arkansas; one daughter and son-in-law, Jennifer and Jason Hill of Nashville, Arkansas; two brothers, Jimmy Canada of Blanchard, Louisiana and Billy Canada of Pineville, Missouri; one sister, Susan Taylor of Greenwood, Arkansas; his step-mother, Carol Canada of Greenwood, Arkansas; a special uncle and aunt, Bill and Evalee Carter of Duncan, Oklahoma; five grandchildren, Brady, Damon, Adalyn, Trent and Whitten and a host of close friends.
Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Monday, December 16, 2013, in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Ronnie Deal officiating. Burial will follow in the Athens Cemetery.
Mrs. Gladys Lissie Keaster Golden
Mrs. Gladys Lissie Keaster Golden, age 73, a resident of Dierks, Arkansas, died Friday, December 13, 2013, in the Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.
She was born March 10, 1940 in Dierks. She was a homemaker and a Baptist.
Mrs. Golden was preceded in death by her parents, Sylvester and Melissie Barbre Keaster; her husband, Floyd A. Golden and infant daughter, Donna.
She is survived by one son and daughter-in-law, Loyd and Paulette Golden of Dierks; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Janie and James Pannell of Gillham, Arkansas, Angela and Robert Taylor and Debbie Golden all of Dierks; three brothers, Eunice Keaster of Dierks, Ernest Keaster of El Dorado, Arkansas and Lawson Keaster of San Augustine, Texas; 7 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.
Funeral Services for Mrs. Golden will be held at 2:00 p.m., Sunday, December 15, 2013, in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks with Gary Welch and Terry Goff officiating. Burial will follow in the Fellowship Cemetery.
The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 p.m., Saturday, December 14th at the funeral home in Dierks.
James (Jim) Baker Hill
James (Jim) Baker Hill passed away on December 11, 2013 in Nashville, Arkansas. He was born in Nashville and loved his hometown until his death. He attended Nashville High School, the University of Arkansas and received his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Henderson State University. Hill married Charlotte Byrd of Gurdon in 1968. He was the proud father to Jenifer Hill Kendrick (Conway) and Allison Hill Worthen (Little Rock) and loved his sons-in-law Greg Kendrick (Conway) and Phillip Worthen (Little Rock) as if they were his own. His greatest joy without question was spending time with his beloved grandchildren Baker Kendrick, Caroline Worthen, Audrey Kendrick, Will Worthen and Ellen Kendrick. Mr. Hill is survived by these beloved family members, as well as his brother John Hill of Texarkana, and sister Ree Hill Cunningham of Springdale. He was predeceased by his parents, J. B and Faustine Hill of Nashville, and sister Virginia Ann Andres of Texarkana.
Hill served his country as a United States Marine for seven years before becoming a cattle rancher and timber producer in Howard County. Mr. Hill was a member of First Baptist Church in Nashville, his local Kiwanis club, and served numerous civic organizations in his town and surrounding counties. An active member of the Cattleman’s Association, he served his community and state as the President of the Cattlemen’s Association for the State of Arkansas, and later proudly served on the National Beef Council. Jim Hill was dedicated to the service of his community and state. Hill felt called to run for office to serve his community earlier in his life, but expressed that a “man’s primary job is to be a good daddy” and that he didn’t want to serve on Capitol Hill his girls went to college. Hill was elected to represent his district in the House of Representatives in 1993-1996 and moved on to the Senate in 1996-2009. He was elected by his Senate colleagues to be the President Pro Tem of the Senate for the 84th General Assembly in 2003. As a member of the House, he was a chief House sponsor of the conservation tax that help funds the Game and Fish Commission and the Parks and Tourism Department. He was inducted into the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission Hall of Fame in 2007. Hill was active in raising funds for diagnosing and treatment of prostate cancer and served on the Arkansas Prostrate Cancer Foundation Board of Directors. He received the organization’s prestigious award for outstanding service. He presides as a War Memorial Commissioner. Hill has proudly served the University of Arkansas Community College at Hope as an active member of a guiding board. He served Arkansas as a Board of Director for the Arkansas State Fair. Mr. Hill was proudest of being named Nashville’s “Man of the Year” in 2009.
A funeral service to honor Jim Hill will be held on Saturday, December 14, 2013 at 1:00 pm at First Baptist Church, Nashville, Arkansas. A visitation will be held at Latimer Funeral Home from 6:00-8:00, Friday, December 13, 2013. Burial will follow the funeral at Nashville Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family requests memorial donations be made to any of Mr. Hill’s favorite charities including Soaring Wings Ranch, Nashville City Parks, Nashville First Baptist Church.
