Toy Cortez Turner
Toy Cortez Turner, age 74, resident of Dierks, died Friday, Nov. 28, 2003 at his home.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Dierks with Rev. Tom Jones officiating. Graveside services were held at 4 p.m. at Shiloh cemetery in Clarendon.
He was born Nov. 13, 1929 at New Hope to Cecil and Violet Flemens Turner; was a farmer; and a member of Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his parents; his first wife, Wincel Johnson Turner; two sons, Wayne Turner and Thomas Reed; one sister, Helen Pickle; and one brother, Jimmy Turner.
He is survived by his wife, Sue Elizabeth Campbell Turner; one son, Garry Turner of Dierks; one daughter, Judy Marshall of Salem, Va.; three brothers, C.J. Turner and Cecil Turner Jr., both of Clarendon, and Mike Turner of Seminole, Tex.; five sisters, Ella Williams of Scott City, Kan., Joan Atteberry and Mary Jones, both of Norman, Mable Jo Umholtz of Sheridan, and Paula Huge of Seminole, Tex.; seven grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
O. D. Tipton
O. D. Tipton, age 83, of Umpire, died Monday, December 1, 2003.
He was born on September 12, 1920, at Umpire, the son of Lonnie Hester Tipton and Rebecca Annice Ralls Tipton. On February 13, 1942, he was married
to Mildred Frederick.
He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was a Master Mason and member of the Baker Springs Masonic Lodge #349. He attended the Athens Missionary Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred Tipton of Umpire; two sons, Neal tipton of Umpire and Danny Tipton of Dierks; two daughters, Marilyn Keith and Sherry Hammock, both of Umpire; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2003, in the Mount Zion Church at Athens with Bro. Don Vaughn and Bro. Keith Vaughn officiating.
Interment were in the Athens cemetery, under the direction of Davis-Smith Funeral Home, Glenwood.
Pallbearers were Jeff Tipton, Scott Feemster, Jamie Tipton, Cole Hammock, Todd Moore, and Cody Gardner.
Floyse Hyle Howard
Floyse Hyle Howard, age 87, resident of Dierks, died Monday, Dec. 1, 2003 in Howard Memorial Hospital.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 in Dierks Church of Christ with James McRae and Lowell Lites, minister, officiating. Burial followed in Dierks cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
He was born April 26, 1916 at Nathan to William Edward and Onie White Howard; was a member of Dierks Church of Christ where he served as an elder for several years; and was retired from Weyerhaeuser where he worked as a supervisor for 42 years. He was predeceased by his wife, Georgia Ruth Green Howard in 1989; and a son, Thomas Edward Howard in 2003.
He is survived by four sons, Ronnie Howard, Danny Howard and Richard Howard, all of Nashville, and Jim Lloyd of Dierks; one daughter, Jo Ann Walters of Dierks; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the funeral home in Dierks.
Cleo Bassham
Mrs. Cleo Doss Schoolfield Bassham, age 92, a resident of Gillham, Arkansas, died Sunday, November 30, 2003, in Shreveport.
She was born July 3, 1911, at King, Arkansas. She was a graduate of De Queen High School and Fort Smith Business College. She served as Deputy Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Sevier County 1933-36 and was a cashier of Southwestern Power & Electric Co.
She retired as office secretary of Shreveport Lodge No. 122, B.P.O. Elks in 1962.
She served on the board of Sevier County Library, Museum and Cossatot Arts and Crafts Association.
She was a member of Gillham Methodist Church where she taught the Youth Sunday School Class for nine years.
She was a member of the senior class of 1930, voted "cutest girl" in senior class and was one of two to letter in women's basketball.
She was preceded in death by her husbands, David A. Schoolfield, who died in 1982 and Carl a. Bassham, Sr., who died in 1991; and a sister, Opal Ward.
Survivors are two sons, David Clay Schoolfield of Vallejo, California, and Guy Ray Schoolfield of Bossier City, Louisiana; two stepsons, Clifford Bassham of New Boston, Texas, and Carl Bassham, Jr., of Gillham; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mrs. Bassham were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, December 3, 2003, at the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in De Queen with Rev. Bill Fish officiating. Burial followed in the Redmen cemetery.
Darrell Wayne Gilmore
Darrell Wayne “Rock” Gilmore, age 42, resident of De Queen, died Thursday, Nov. 27, 2003.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 3 in New Zion Baptist Church with Rev. Jessie Miller officiating. Burial followed in Sand Hill cemetery, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
He was born Aug. 12, 1961 in De Queen to Hubert Lee and Agnes Nelson Gilmore; was a member of New Zion Baptist Church; and an employee of K-2 Construction Company of Texarkana. He was predeceased by his father; and a brother, Hubert Gilmore.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Diane Mitchell Gilmore of De Queen; two daughters, Cheyenea Franklin and Raven Mitchell, both of Broken Bow, Okla.; his mother, Agnes Gilmore of De Queen; three brothers, Roy Gilmore, Creal Gilmore, and Mike Gilmore, all of De Queen; four sisters, Sharon Robertson, Louise Goodman, Lynette Gilmore and Emma Gilmore, all of De Queen; two step-grandsons; and a number of nieces and nephews.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 at the funeral home.
Larry Lee Bass
Larry Lee Bass, age 53, resident of De Queen, died Saturday, Nov. 22, 2003 in North Dakota.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 2 in Redmen cemetery with Pastor Don Fortner officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
He was born May 17, 1950 at Wisconsin Rapids, Wis., to Howard and Bertha Bingham Bass; was a truck driver; and a Vietnam veteran.
He is survived by one son, Cameron Bass of California; two daughters, Michelle Bass of Idaho and Amber Bass of De Queen; his parents; one sister, Barbara Camarillo of De Queen; one niece, and one nephew.
Essie Pearl Yates
Mrs. Essie Pearl Yates, age 99, resident of Crossett, died Sunday, Oct. 12, 2003 at the Leisure Lodge Nursing Center in Crossett.
Graveside services were held at 4:30 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 14 in Center Point cemetery with Steven Crain, minister, officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home of De Queen.
She was born April 15, 1904 in Howard County; was a homemaker; and a member of the Church of Christ. She was predeceased by her parents, J.R. and Josie Jeanns Henderson; her husband, L.N. Yates Sr.; and three sons, L.N. Yates Jr., Robert Gerald Yates and Billy Mack Yates.
She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. B.J. Corbell of Henderson, Ky.; one son, Donald Ray Yates of Crossett; 13 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Arnold E. Dockins
Arnold E. Dockins, age 81, resident of De Queen, died Monday, March 3, 2003 in De Queen Regional Medical Center.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, March 7 in Chapel Hill Baptist Church with Rev. Homer Frachiseur officiating. Burial will follow in Millwee cemetery under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home of De Queen.
He was born Nov. 25, 1921 in Dandridge, Tenn., to Henry George Washington and Margaret Elizabeth Johnson Dockins; was a retired carpenter and poultry farmer; and a member of Chapel Hill Baptist Church. He was predeceased by his parents; three brothers, George Dockins, Frank Dockins and Bennie Dockins; one sister, Eva Perdue; and his first wife, Pauline Dockins in October of 2000.
He is survived by his wife, Melba Coffey Smith Dockins of De Queen; four sons, Jimmy Dockins of Waxahachie, Tex., Charlie Dockins of Horatio, Larry Dockins of De Queen, and Kenneth Dockins of Horatio; two daughters, Judy Engstrand of Farmersville, Tex., and Debora Hibbs of De Queen; two brothers, Mack Dockins of Pilot Point, Tex., and Buddy Dockins of Mabank, Tex.; two sisters, Lucille Praytor of Mabank, Tex., and Katherine Fowler of Cedar Creek Lake, Tex.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Goldia May Phillips, age 86, resident of Llano, Tex., died Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2003 in Austin, Tex.
Graveside services were held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 17, 2003 in Chapel Hill cemetery with James McRae, minister, officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.
She was born Sept. 15, 1917 in Ringold, La., to Thomas Preuett and Zurilda Stallings; was a homemaker; and a Baptist. She was predeceased by her husband, Olan Phillips; a son, Larry Phillips; two sisters, Janell and Flora; and a brother, Thomas.
She is survived by one daughter, Glenda Knox of Llano; five grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
