Virgil William Murphy
Virgil William Murphy, age 87, resident of Wickes, died Saturday, May 15, 2004 at his home.
He was born Jan. 10, 1917 in Wickes to the late William and Annie Robertson Murphy; served in the United State Navy; was a cattle and chicken farmer; and a member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church and the VFW. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister, Bertha Blanton.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Murphy of Wickes; one son, Virgil Dwight Murphy of De Queen; two daughters, Virgie Nolen of Houston, Tex., and Pamela Amelia of Farmersville, Tex.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, May 19 in Wickes Church of the Nazarene wit Bro. Michael Wilson officiating. Burial followed in Baker cemetery in Wickes under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home in Mena.
Visitation was from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 at the funeral home.
John W. Minor
John W. Minor, age 89, resident of De Queen, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 in Sevier Health Care.
He was born Dec. 1, 1914 in De Queen to John Pete and Daisy Pitts Minor. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Stella Mae Minor; one son, Charles Minor; an infant daughter, Patricia Minor; three brothers, Clyde Minor, Paul Minor and Porter Minor; and three sisters, Florence Smith, Daisy Cloonan and Kathaleen Tomanka.
He is survived by his wife, Alice Minor; one son, John James Minor of De Queen; one grandson; six step-grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; several step-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, May 3 in Chapel Hill cemetery with Van Ledbetter officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Isable H. “Bill” Hogg
Isable H. “Bill” Hogg, age 85, resident of Dierks, died Sunday, May 2, 2004 at Dierks.
He was born Nov. 1, 1918 in Howard County to John Richard and Lela Conatser Hogg; was a member of Dierks United Methodist Church; and a retired truck driver for Weyerhaeuser. He was preceded in death by a son, Ronald; and two brothers, Lendell and Edwin.
He is survived by his wife, Opal Watson Hogg; one son, Don Hogg of De Queen; one brother, Elmer E. Hogg of Houston, Tex.; one sister, Linnie Gaddis of Dierks; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, May 4 in Dierks United Methodist Church with Rev. Garry Wiles officiating. Burial followed in Green’s Chapel cemetery under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday, May 3 at the funeral home in Dierks.
Rev. John Fannin Jr.
Rev. John Fannin Jr., age 74, resident of Dierks, died Monday, May 17, 2004 at his home.
He was born June 13, 1929 in Glowmar, Ky.; was retired from the U.S. Army; a retired minister at Dierks First Assembly of God Church after 22 years; a carpenter; and a member of Harvest Time Assembly of God Church in Murfreesboro. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Maggie Ellis Fannin; and his wife, Mary Leah Moses Fannin.
He is survived by one son, John Fannin of Dierks; one daughter, Susan Gail Farmer of Ft. Worth, Tex.; two sisters, Lucille Haynes of Tazwell, Tenn., and Geraldine Lindsey of Monroe, Mich.; one brother, Wilburn Fannin of Plymouth, Mich.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 19 in Dierks Assembly of God Church with Jerry Shinn and Billy Burks officiating. Burial was at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 20 in Hopewell cemetery in DeRidder, La., under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in Dierks.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, May 18 at the funeral home in Dierks.
Nedra Evans
Nedra Evans, age 79, resident of Rowlett, Tex., and formerly of Grannis, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in Texas.
She was born Dec. 12, 1924 in Gainesville, Tex., to the late Raymond and Callie Eunice Cloer Brown; was married
Dec. 28, 1967 in Hot Springs to the late Morris “M.T.” Evans; was a former owner of Evans Quail Farm at Grannis; and was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son, Robin Lyon; and her sisters, Goldie Hill, Geneva Dockery and Dorothy Brown.
She is survived by a daughter, Teresa Callahan of Wylie, Tex.; two sons, Lewis Lyon of Lonsdale and Noel Lyon of Descanso, Calif.; four stepchildren, Valerie Cunningham of Durant, Okla., Jane Beggs of Texas, Richard Evans of Zafra, Okla., and Clifford Evans of Garland, Tex.; two brothers, Fred Brown of Mesquite, Tex., and Glen Brown of Austin, Tex.; two sisters, Mary Mabry of Portland, Ore., and Bonnie Brown of Sherman, Tex.; 20 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24 in Beasley-Wood Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Gene Cross officiating. Burial followed in Pleasant Hill cemetery in Hatfield.
Jim Wallace
Mr. James W. "Jim" Wallace, Jr., age 69, a resident of Glenwood, Ark., died Thursday, May 6, 2004 in De Queen.
He was born September 9, 1934 in El Dorado, Ark. He was a graduate of Kemper Military School and New Mexico Military Institute, was a commissioned officer in the U.S. Army, retired banker, and former President of the First National Bank in De Queen.
Mr. Wallace was preceded in death by his wife, Verlene Jester Wallace.
He is survived by one daughter, Gail Greene of De Queen; one son, Tony Wallace of Rogers, Ark.; one sister, Patricia Jenkins of Columbia, Mo.; four grandchildren, Lee Greene, Camille Greene, Jessica Wallace, and Rhett Wallace; and a number of nieces and nephews.
A memorial service for Mr. Wallace was held at 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 11, 2004 in the Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Faron Rogers officiating.
Roy Junior Woodward
Roy Junior Woodward, age 70, resident of De Queen, died Wednesday, May 12, 2004 at his home.
He was born July 1, 1933 in Jackson County to Eddie and Goldie Ensley Woodward; was retired from Tyson Foods at Waldron; and was a member of the Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness.
He is survived by his wife, Darlene Marie Fuller Woodward of De Queen; one son, Ricky Lynn Woodward of Mena; two daughters, Ronda Jean Slate of De Queen and Linda Darlene Young of Oklahoma; three brothers, Charles Woodward, E.W. Woodward and Eddie Woodward, all of Batesville; 13 grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 15 in the Kingdom Hall Jehovah Witness with Jerry Brazeal officiating, under the direction of Chandler Funeral Home.
Janie Lowery Clardy
Mrs. Janie Lowery Clardy, age 93, resident of Lockesburg, died Wednesday, April 21, 2004 in Wadley Regional Medical Center at Texarkana.
She was born on Sunday, March 12, 1911 in Horatio; was a homemaker; and a member of Macedonia United Methodist Church in Lockesburg. She was predeceased by her husband, Casho Clardy; and three children, Winfred Clardy, Berward Clardy and Jean Patterson.
She is survived by two sons, Alvin Clardy and Merrel Clardy, both of Lockesburg; one daughter, Mary Alice Turner of Omaha, Neb.; 12 grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held at 11 a.m. Monday, April 26, 2004 in Macedonia United Methodist Church with Rev. Reginald Russell officiating. Burial followed in Holly Springs cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Viewing was from 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 25 at the funeral home.
Troy Leon Miranda
Sergeant First Class Troy Leon Miranda, age 44, resident of Wickes, was killed in action serving in the United States Army in Baghdad, Iraq, on Thursday, May 20, 2004.
He was born Sept. 17, 1959 in De Queen; graduated in 1977 from Wickes High School; received a MBA from Henderson State University; worked for the Arkansas Military Support (Counter Drug Operations); enlisted in the Army Reserves in 1984; took infantry basic at Fort Benning, Ga., Company A 8th Battalion 2nd Infantry Training Brigade; then transferred to Company C 1-153 in 1986, 1st Squad 1st Platoon; attended Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer, Air Assault, Combat Lifesaver, Pathfinder Tow Missile Gunner and Military Intelligence; served in Company C 1-153 Inf. From 1986 to 1998, HHC 39th Infantry Brigade S-3 Plans and Operation, in 1999 was transferred back to Company C 1-153 for deployment to Kuwait and assigned as Squad Leader in 4th Squad, 3rd Platoon; in 2003 was transferred to 2nd Platoon as 3rd Squad Leader.
He is survived by his parents, Carlos D. and Bobby Wilson Miranda of Wickes; three brothers, Paul Miranda and Christopher Miranda, both of Wickes, and Phillip Ostacia Miranda of Mansfield; two sisters, Carla J. Miranda of Little Rock and Karen Miranda of Wickes; and a number of nephews and one niece. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Alfred and Richard Miranda.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, May 29 in the Wickes school auditorium with Bro. Leon McClesky officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Grove cemetery under the direction of Beasley-Wood Funeral Home of Mena.
Charles Russell "Rus" Venable

Mr. Charles Russell “Rus” Venable, age 44, of North Little Rock, Arkansas, formerly of Mena, passed away Sunday, November 6, 2011 at his home.
He was born January 7, 1967 in Mena, Arkansas to Charles Venable and Patsy Wright Venable. He was owner-operator of Massimo Furniture Store in Little Rock, Arkansas. He was a loving son, brother, and friend and will be missed by those who knew him.
