Jose Gaspar Rojas
Jose Gaspar Rojas, age 26, resident of De Queen, died Sunday, March 21, 2004 in McCurtain Memorial Hospital in Idabel, Okla.
He was born Tuesday, Oct. 18, 1977 in Jerecuaro, Guanajuato, Mexico; was a tree planter for Ouachita Forestry; and a member of St. Barbara’s Catholic Church.
He is survived by a daughter, Kiah Renee Jones of De Queen; his parents, Jose Guadalupe and Alicia Hernandez Tinajero Rojas of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; 11 brothers, Margarito Rojas of Brownsboro, Tex., Guadalupe Rojas, Eugenio Rojas, Benjamin Rojas, Martin Rojas, Saul Rojas and Sergio Rojas, all of De Queen, and Jorge Rojas, Miguel Rojas, Francisco Rojas and Guadalupe Rojas, all of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; six sisters, Francisca Jimenez and Guillermina Rojas, both of De Queen, and Laura Rojas, Maria de Carmen Rojas, Erika Rojas and Elena Rojas, all of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; his grandmother, Maria del Carmen Tinajero of La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Rosary services were held at 5 p.m. Tuesday, March 23 in Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel with Father John Kerr officiating. Funeral services will be held at a later date in La Enrredadora, Guanajuato, Mexico with burial following in Jerecuaro, Guanajuato, Mexico.
Juanita Elizabeth Short
Mrs. Juanita Elizabeth Tom Short, age 86, resident of De Queen, and formerly of Broken Bow, Okla., died Wednesday, April 7, 2004 in Brookewood Nursing Center.
She was born Sept. 25, 1917 at Soper, Okla., to Watson and Rosa Nancy Gardner Tom; was a member of the Assembly of God Church; and a homemaker. She was predeceased by her parents; a sister, Annie; a brother, John Henry Tom; her son, Emerson J. Short in 2002; and her husband, A.J. Short in 1947.
She is survived by six sons, J.C. Short of Horatio, Kermit Short of Gold Beach, Ore., Thomas Short of De Queen, Edmond Short of Cobbtown, Nick Short and Kenneth Short, both of Gillham; one daughter, Maggie Ruth Short of Horatio; one adopted daughter, Ollie Jean Wilson of Bethel, Okla.; one brother, Leonard Tom of Soper, Okla.; one sister, Lora Roden of San Antonio, Tex.; 26 grand-children; 54 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, April 10 in Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. J.L. Walker officiating. Burial followed in Eagletown cemetery.
The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 9 at the funeral home.
Peter Jonathan Kelly
Mr. Peter Jonathan Kelly, age 54, a resident of De Queen, died Monday, March 8, 2004 in the Advance Care Hospital in Hot Springs, Arkansas.
He was born November 8, 1949 in New Orleans. He was a 14 year veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps where he served two tours in Vietnam, and worked 14 years for the Strategic Petroleum Reserve. He was a member of the American Legion, 1st, 2nd and 3rd and Marine Corps Foundation Association's and was a member of the First Baptist Church in Gillham.
Mr. Kelly was preceded in death by his parents, Robert Jonathan and Anna Mae Cranan Kelly.
He is survived by his wife: Judy Hankins Kelly of De Queen; two sons and daughters-in-law: Peter Jonathan "Johnny" Kelly II and Dawn Kelly of South Riding, VA and Jason Michael and Carman Kelly of Crawfordville, FL; one daughter and son-in-law: Athena Kelly Holmes and Terry Holmes of De Queen; three grandchildren: Alysia Kelly, Paul Kelly and Cydney Holmes; two brothers and sister-in-law: Kenneth and Noretta Kelly of Terrytown, LA and Robert Kelly of Kenner, LA; one sister and brother-in-law: Denise and Barry Holzhauser of Gonzales, LA; two sisters-in-law: Clora Holland and Maudie Hankins, both of Gillham, AR, and a number of nieces and nephews.
Funeral Services for Mr. Kelly will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, March 12, 2004 in the First Baptist Church in Gillham with Rev. Bob McManus officiating. Burial will follow in the Valley cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.
Norman Staggs
Mr. Norman Clay "Dimp" Staggs, age 65, a resident of Eagletown, Oklahoma, died Monday, March 1, 2004 at his home.
He was born March 17, 1938 in Lockesburg, Arkansas. He was a re-tired truck driver for Weyerhaeuser and a member of the Rock Hill Baptist Church.
Mr. Staggs was preceded in death by his wife, Willow Staggs in May 1990; his parents, Henry Clay "Ikie" and Thelma Page Staggs; and one brother, Wendell Stagg in October 2001.
He is survived by one son, Loyd Staggs of Fayetteville, Arkansas; one daughter and son-in-law, Angie and Jay Ragan of Eagletown, Oklahoma; four sisters, Verna Campbell of Ben Lomond, Zella Barnes of De Queen, Clara Frady of Hatfield, and Katy Pannell of Horatio; one brother, Johnny Staggs of New Hope, a very special granddaughter, Meshalia Ragan and two step-grandsons, Zachary and Robert Ragan.
Graveside funeral services for Mr. Staggs were held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, March 3, 2004 in the Lockesburg cemetery with Rev. John Henry Williams officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Family visitation will be from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 at Wilkerson Funeral Home.
George Garrett
George Harold Garrett, age 85 a resident of De Queen, died Sunday, March 7, 2004 in the Christus St. Michael Health System.
He was born October 15, 1918 in Benton, Arkansas. He was retired from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, a member of the D.A.V. and a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII.
Mr. Garrett was preceded in death by his parents: Benjamin Alfred and Alice Mae Godwin Garrett.
He is survived by his wife: Josephine Eugenia Medlock Garrett of De Queen, two sons: Richard Hugh Garrett of Sherman, Texas and Gary Harold Garrett of Grand Junction, Colorado; 4 grandchildren, 1 great-grandchild and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside Funeral Services for Mr. Garrett were held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, March 11, 2004 in the Rosemont cemetery in Benton, Arkansas with John Garrett officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.
Gladys Mae Honnoll
Mrs. Gladys Mae Gauldin Honnoll, age 82, resident of Foreman, died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2004 in Christus St. Michael Health Care Center at Texarkana.
She was born Aug. 4, 1921 in Winthrop to Maurice and Augustine Boldin Gauldin; was a homemaker; and a member of the Church of God International.
She is survived by two sons, Bobby Joe Honnoll of Bacliff, Tex., and Howard Honnoll of Texarkana, Tex.; two daughters, Barbara Ann Fitzhugh of Foreman and Marilyn Sue Honnoll of Alleene; a sister, Billie Wilkerson of Foreman; nine grandchildren; and a number of great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Graveside funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 2 in Dollarhide cemetery with Kenneth Klitz officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home, De Queen.
The family received friends from 9 to 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Memorials may be made to the Dollarhide cemetery Association in care of Perry Young.
Joel Foster
Joel Lee Foster, age 64, a resident of De Queen, died Saturday, March 5, 2004, in Port Lavaca, Texas.
He was born July 10, 1939, in Nowara, Oklahoma to Jim E. and Franko Frances Foster.
He was a loving husband and father, and retired U.S. Navy Veteran, and he served in the Vietnam War. He was also retired from B.O.C. Industrial Gases and a member of the Family Motor Home Association, The Good Sam’s Club, and S.M.A.R.T., The Special Military Active Retired Travel Club.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Franko Foster and his brother, Donnie Foster.
He is survived by his wife: Ethel Lavern Harvey Foster; two daughters: Laurie Lee Penrod of Norfolk, Virginia, and DeeDee Little of Richmond, Virginia; one brother: Jerry Foster of De Queen; and two granddaughters.
Graveside services for Mr. Joel Lee Foster were held at 2:00 p.m. on Tuesday, March 9, 2004, at the Chapel Hill cemetery with Bro. Homer Frachiseur officiating, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
The family received visitors from 6 until 8 p.m. on Monday, March 8, 2004, at Wilkerson Funeral Home in De Queen.
Eula Elizabeth Bailey
Mrs. Eula Elizabeth Davis Bailey, age 77, resident of De Queen, died Friday, Feb. 20, 2004 in Brookewood Nursing Center.
She was born Aug. 31, 1926 at White Cliffs; was a retired accountant and cashier; and a Baptist. She was predeceased by her husband.
She is survived by a son, Buck Bailey of Wickes; a sister, Helen Beck; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial services were held at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 23 in Chandler Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Scottie Ray officiating.
Homer Madison Combs
Homer Madison Combs, age 93, resident of Wickes, died Friday, March 5, 2004 at Sevier HealthCare in De Queen.
He was born Oct. 14, 1910 in Canandiaqua, NY, to Murry and Laura Fiero Combs; was a 30 years veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in World War II and Korea; a member of the V.F.W. Musgrave-Hankins Post 10484; fire chief at Wickes Fire Department for several years; and a member of the Masonic Grande Lodge of Arkansas and Wickes Methodist Church. He was predeceased by his parents; his wife, Christa Bell Sumner Combs in 1990; and one brother, Roy Combs.
He is survived by one daughter, Laura Covenesky and one son, Homer Combs Jr., both of Oahu, Hawaii.
Memorial services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 9 in Wickes First Methodist Church with Pastor Daniel Williams and Pastor Scott Ray officiating. Interment followed in Duckett cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the youth ministry at Wickes Methodist Church.
