R.H. Duck
R.H. Duck, age 73, of Sarepta, Louisiana died Sunday, September 28, 2003 at the Homer Medical Center in Homer, Louisiana. He was born September 5, 1930 in Lincoln Parish, Louisiana. Mr. Duck was a retired carpenter and a member of the New Sarepta Baptist Church.
He is survived by: his wife, Vera Duck of Sarepta; three sons, Gene Hood of Springhill, LA, Carl Hood of Minden, LA & Marty Hood of Sarepta; two daughters, Karen Engle of Sarepta and Lynette Dragland of Shongaloo, LA; six brothers, Junior Duck, Charlie Duck, Bobby Duck, Donald Duck, Nathan Duck and Jimmy Duck; twelve grandchildren and four great grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on Tuesday, September 30, 2003 at the New Sarepta Baptist Church with the Rev. Danny Dodds and Rev. Tim Everett officiating and burial in the Old Sarepta Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps, AR.
Gay V. Simmons
Gay V. Simmons, born on December 14, 1934, in Hope, Arkansas, and passed away with his family by his side on September 26, 2003. Gay will be reunited in the afterlife by his best friend and twin brother, Ray Simmons, his mother and father, Hattie and Archie Simmons, and his siblings, Cora Simmons, Opal Martin, Dulcie Jones-Martin, Vera Huffman, Bonnie Pittman, Montez Moore-Grammer, Homer Simmons, Otha Simmons, and Roy Simmons. Gay’s beautiful sister, Berlene Ingram, is Gay’s sole surviving sibling. Gay also leaves his son, Roy Simmons, and his daughters, Kelly Simmons and Stephanie Simmons. He will be missed by numerous friends, including his long-time friend, Margaret Simmons, many nieces, nephews, cousins, and of course, his grand-dogs, Sam and Tucker-Bear.
Gay loved being with his family, and raised three children, who loved him very much. He was an accomplished guitar player, with a love for music that carried through to his children. At least one evening a week, he played his guitar while his family listened and sang along to the music of the Ozarks--the music he deeply loved. He loved to walk and ride his bike. He was an amazing woodworker, who made beautiful, intricate birdhouses that he gave to friends, family, and generously donated to charities, raising hundreds of dollars for those charities. He painstakingly built three beautiful homes, from the ground up, for his family. He loved to communicate back and forth with his friends and family over the internet. He spent many hours researching his family’s genealogy. He kept every greeting card ever given to him. He loved to read old western novels. He liked watching football--especially when the University of Arkansas was playing. He loved fishing and camping.
In 1958, Gay joined the Houston Fire Department, where he served over 30 years, until 1989. Through hard work and determination, Gay rose through the ranks of the Fire Department, ultimately retiring with the title of "District Chief"--the highest ranking, non-appointed position in the fire department. He was highly respected by the firefighters that worked with him. A great point of pride in his life was when his son, Roy, followed in his footsteps, retiring himself after 27 years of service.
A memorial service was held to celebrate Gay’s life on Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 2:00 p.m., at Rosewood Funeral Home, 2602 Old Humble Road, in Humble. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his name to Midway-Boyd Hill Volunteer Fire Department, 211 Highway 29, Lewisville, Arkansas 71845.
There was a graveside service at Knighton Chapel Cemetery (Midway), Lewisville, AR on Friday, October 3, 2003 at Noon. After the service you are invited to join relatives and friends at the local Midway-Boyd Hill Volunteer Fire Dept., 211 Hwy 29, Lewisville, where Gay was a great supporter.
Donald Martin Vlazny
Donald Martin Vlazny, age 80, of West Lake Village, California died Monday, September 22, 2003 in Alpharetta, Georgia at the home of his daughter, Mary Shehan.
He was a veteran of World War II where he was a 1st Lieutenant in the Army, serving in an artillery battalion unit in France. He was retired from Exxon/Mobil after a thirty-eight year accounting career. Mr. Vlazny enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing, traveling and most of all rooting for the Missouri Tigers and the St. Louis Cardinals. He served as the President of his Exxon Annuitants Club in California. He was preceded in death by his wife of 50 years, Elise Bruton Vlazny.
He is survived by: two daughters & sons-in-law, Wanda & Jarrell Kauffman of Houston, TX and Mary & Wayne Shehan of Alpharetta, GA; one son, David Vlazny of Moro Bay, CA; three grandchildren, Kyle Kauffman, Lisa Shehan and Amy Shehan; a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held at 2:00 pm on Thursday, September 25, 2004 at Wilson Cemetery in Lewisville, Arkansas with the Rev. Mike Turner officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps.
Willard Grady Brown
Willard Grady Brown, age 93, of Buckner, Arkansas died Monday, September 22, 2003 at the Magnolia Hospital in Magnolia, AR. Mr. Brown was born November 4, 1909 in Falcon, AR. Mr. Brown was a retired farmer and member of the Falcon Church of Christ. He was preceded in death by his wife of seventy-three years, Nell Brown on August 3, 2003.
He is survived by: one sister and brother-in-law, Lorene and Moody Bridges of Buckner; several nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 am on Wednesday, September 24, 2003 at the Falcon Church of Christ with Bro. Harley Sisson officiating and burial in the Falcon Cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps.
Mary Sue Burns
Mary Sue Burns, age 15, of Genoa, Arkansas died Sunday, September 21, 2003 in Texarkana, Arkansas. She was born April 21, 1988 in Texarkana. Ms. Burns was preceded in death by her grandfather, Billy Parker.
She is survived by: her mother, Cynthia (Sissy) Burns of Genoa; father, Tracy Lee Burns of Texarkana, TX; sister, Brittney Burns of Genoa; maternal grandmother, Sue Parker of Stamps, AR; paternal grandparents, Lewis & Alice Burns of Wilton, AR; several cousins.
Funeral services were held at 10:00 am on Saturday, Sept. 27, 2003 at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps with the Rev. Charlie Warren officiating and burial in the Shiloh Cemetery north of Stamps under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps.
Glenn Willis
Glenn Willis, age 76, of Texarkana, Arkansas died Saturday, September 13, 2003. He was born December 9, 1926 in Mineral Springs, Arkansas to Dock & Bessie White-Willis. He served in the United States Army.
Mr. Willis is survived by a host of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held on Friday, September 26, 2003 at 11:00 am at the Lakeside Cemetery in Stamps under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps.
Arline Smith
Arline Smith, age 83, of Taylor, Arkansas died Saturday, August 30, 2003 at a Springhill, LA nursing home. She was born December 12, 1919 in Taylor, AR.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by: her parents, Rufus S. (Doc) Glass and Sally Betty Glass; brothers Rufus Glass, C.A. (Shorty) Glass, and Barney Glass; husbands Noel M. Gordon and Oley N. Smith; sisters, Selma Gordon, Viola Benson and Dorothy Smith.
Survivors include: two sons, Jackie & Glenda Gordaon and Rickey & Nancy Gordon, all of Taylor; three grandchildren, Tracy Gordon of Emerson, AR, Steve & Stacy Rowe of Emerson, and Micheal Prince of Haughton, LA; five great grandchildren, Chelsie, Tara & Alex Gordon, Trent & Raigan Dew; three sisters, Sybil Taylor of Magnolia, AR, Lovie Randolph of Midland, TX and Lossie Fay Phillips of Springhill, LA.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm on August 31, 2003 at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Taylor with burial in the Sharmon Cemetery with Rev. Cleo Paul officiating under the direction of Smith Funeral Home, Stamps, AR.
Burnett Tennyson Monroe
Burnett T. Monroe, age 77, of Stamps, Arkansas died Monday, September 8, 2003 at his residence. Mr. Monroe was born February 16, 1926 in Florien, Louisiana. He was a retired carpenter and World War II Army veteran, and was awarded 2 Bronze Stars. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald Wade Monroe in 1989.
Survivors include: four daughters, Sondra Kay Butler & husband David of Stamps, Brenda D. Overton & husband Don of Hudson, FL, Joyce M. Monroe of Nashville, TN, and Kee Sung Monroe of Tacoma, WA; two brothers, Dwayne B. Monroe of Shreveport, LA and E. H. Howrey Monroe of Montgomery, LA; special friend, Jackie; twelve grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, numerous nieces & nephews.
Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 11, 2003 at the Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Stamps with Chaplain Brooks officiating and burial in the Springhill Cemetery.
