Born in Richmond, Va. and raised in Helena, he was an FBI Senior Resident Agent who had served the Florence and Northwest Alabama community since 1991. In his distinguished 24-year career with the FBI, he received numerous special recognitions for his investigative skill and expertise.
Survivors include his wife, Lynn McCarty Smith; a daughter, Jana Lynn Smith, and son, Matthew Clark Smith, all of Florence; his parents, Herbert A. Smith Sr. and Ethel Lueken Smith of Helena; sisters, Dreda McElrath of Jackson, Mo., Vickie Trimble of Lawrence, Kansas, Frances Crawford of Bartlesville, Okla., Julia Shockley of Little Rock, Jennifer Smith of Helena; brothers, Walter Smith of Alpharetta, Ga., Glen SMith of Marianna, Jeff Smith of Yukon, Okla., and Michael Smith of Colliersville, Tenn.
A brother, Charles Smith, preceded him in death.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Monday, Aug. 27 at Christ Chapel Church in Florence with the Rev. Abbott Victor J. Clark officiating.

James Earl Young
James Earl Young, 83, of LaGrange, died Wednesday, Agu. 29 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
He served his country during WWII. He was the first mayor of LaGrange and was featured in a PBS documentary on farming.
He is survived by his wife, Fannie Young; three daughters, Forlisher Brown and Hester Montgomery, both of Omaha, Neb., and Clariece Sanders of Marianna; nine sons, James Young of Detroit, Mich., Lynn Young of Longview, Texas, Russell Young of Memphis, Manuel Young of Felton, ARthur Young and Carl Young, both of Alton, Okla., Earl Young, Clement Young and Malcolm Young, all of LaGrange; 21 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services were held at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 2 at Mt. Perion M.B. Church in LaGrange with Rev. Booker Thomas officiating. Burial was at Mt. Perion Cemetery.

Irvin "Sharp" Lee, 69, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2001.
He was a retired maintenance foreman for the Marianna Housing Authority and a lifetime member of VFW Post 449.
He is survived by his mother, Dovie Shannon of Heber Springs; two sons, Kevin and Gary Lee, both of Marianna; two daughters, Tena Dilks of Colt and Terry Broussard of Lake Charles, La.; two brothers, Ivan Joe Lee of Heber Springs and Rodger Lee of Peoria, Ill.; four sisters, Betty Sue Davis of Heber Springs, Linda Lee of Nashville, Tenn., Pat Norman and Bonnie Graham, both of Peoria; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Services were held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 16 at Roller-Citizens Chapel with Rev. Rodger Hooker officiating. Burial was in Marianna Memorial Park.

Monica Patrice Tennie, 39, of Haynes, died Wednesday, Oct. 10.
She is survived by three children, Markesha, Nikki and Carrington, all of Haynes; her mother and father, Albert and Alberta Garrett of Haynes; one sister, Cynthia Lewellen of Haynes; and one brother, Michael Garrett of Little Rock.

Elrita Stewart Dickey, 95, widow of James Bishop Dickey of Marianna, died Thursday, Oct. 4 at a nursing home in Miss.
Born in Jamestown, the daughter of Abner and Cordelia Barnes Stewart, she was a housewife and a resident of Marianna since 1928.
Survivors include her sisters, Lydia Stewart Miller of Fayetteville and Agnes Logan of Tumbling Shoals; two children, Rita Dickey Morrison of Jackson, Miss. and James Stewart Dickey of Memphis; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at .

Joe L. Brown, 88, of Forrest City, formerly of Marianna, died Thursday, Oct. 4, 2001 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
He worked for the Lee County School District for 38 years.
He is survived by his wife, Alberta Brown of Forrest City; two daughters, Earnestine Conyers of East St. Louis, Ill. and Eva Jean Miller of Marianna; and one son, John Brown of Chicago.

Susie Smith, 76, died Monday, Oct. 1, 2001 at Helena Regional Medical Center.
She was the widow of Lawyer Smith. She was also preceded in death by two children, Clara Williams and Lula Barnes.

Nathaniel Hicks, 46, of Forrest City, died Monday, Oct. 1 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
He is survived by his wife, Emma Gardner Hicks; three sons, Kendall Davis, Nathaniel Hicks Jr., and Joshua Hicks, all of Forrest City; one daughter, Cheryl Crawford of Forrest City; his father, Lee Ferry Hicks Sr. of Chicago; 11 sisters, Versie Austin, Katherine Strong, Lula Champ, Doris Pettus, Shameika Searcy, all of Little Rock, Jacqueline Searcy, Freda Hicks and Sheila Hicks of Chicago, and Carrie Dotson of Cleveland, Ohio, Iniece Searcy of Forrest City, and Lydia Coleman of Tulsa, Okla.; nine brothers, Robert Edwards of Phoenix, Ariz., Terry Searcy of Little Rock, Stanley Searcy, Franklin Searcy, Percell Jr Searcy, Leonard Mohammed, Lee Ferry Hicks Jr, and Christopher Hicks, all of chicago; and three grandchildren.

Alonzo Harris
Alonzo Harris, 52, of Houston, Texas, died Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2001 at the VA Hospital in Houston.
He was born in Marianna and raised in the community of Skidmore. He was a Vietnam veteran in the United States Army and served in the U.S. Coast Guard.
He was preceded in death by his grandson, Stanley Davis II.
Survivors include his wife, Beverly Joyce Harris; his mother, L.V. Harris of Dallas, Texas; a son, Alonzo Harris Jr. of Houston; three daughters, Alisha Smith of Seattle, Wash., Bridgette Davis of Houston, and Samine Jessica Harris of Corpus Christi, Texas; three sisters, Irma Bibles and Carolyn Shumate of Dallas and and Clove Williams of Atlanta, Ga.; seven brothers, Jesse Harris of Detroit, Mich., James Harris of Marianna, Donald Harris of Columbus, Ohio, Larry Harris, Jerry Harris, Bobby Ray Harris and Horace Harris Jr., all of Dallas.; and nine grandchildren.

Sarah Thomas
Sarah Frances Burke Thomas, 50, of Conway, died Friday, Sept. 28, 2001.
She was the daughter of the late Robert William Burke Sr. of Marianna and is survived by her mother, Sarah Evelyn Burke of Jonesboro.
Ms. Thomas was a graduate of The University of Central Arkansas, with a double major in trumpet and organ and a masters in trumpet. She was a world-class composer, performer, and a former professor at the Unviersity of Central Arkansas. She was an ordained minister with Iverna Tompkin Ministry of Phoenix, Ariz. and a member of Christ Church in Conway. She founded and chaired Rams Horn Ministry, through which she and her husband, Harry Steven Thomas, produced and distributed her original recordings and ministry aids.
She is survived by her husband; a sister, Eberle Burke Grimmer; a brother, Robert William Burke Jr. of Paris, France.
A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5 at Trinity Cathedral in Little Rock.

She was born in Dallas, Texas, to George B. and Ruth Margaret Clayblaugh Turner.
She is survived by her husband, Jimmy Mooney of Marianna; one daughter, Sherril Mooney of Marianna; two brothers and two sisters.

Ruby E. Wilson Rodgers, 86, died Wednesday, Sept. 24, 2001.
She was the widow of Lee Rodgers.

Ruby Lovell
Ruby Neal Lovell, age 84, of Moro, died Friday, Aug. 24, 2001 at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.
She was a member of the Moro United Pentecostal Church and was a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Ernest J. Lovell; on son, Jeff Lovell of Brinkley; one daughter, E. Tenie Bullard of Pine Bluff; one brother, Cecil Smith of Moro; one sister, Wanda Ridge Eddleman of Marianna; three grandchildren, one step-grandson and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her brother, Tom Smith Jr., and sisters, Myrtle Monemaker, Beatrice Smith and Mary Hood.

Charles H. "Chuck" Moore, 57, of St. Louis, Mo., died Saturday, Sept. 15, 2001.
He and his parents, the late Horace and Catherine B. Moore, were former residents of Marianna.
He was retired from John Hancock Investment Corporation of St. Louis.
He is survived by three sons, Mark Moore of St. Louis, Graham and Tyler Moore, both of Tulsa, Okla.;' one sister, Laura Catherine Newcomer of Kissemmee, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
Services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 21 at Oak Grove Cemetery in Moro with Kevin Dodson, minister of the Salem-Wheatley Methodist Church, officiating.
