Betty Ruth (St. John) Arie, 72 of Cave City, Ark., died Sept. 24, 2008, at White River Medical Center in Batesville. She was born April 10, 1936, at Hoxie, Ark., to Leonard Otto and Velva (Riggs) St. John. She was a homemaker and had worked at White Rodgers and Westport Casuals in Batesville. She was a member of the VFW women's auxilary in Evening Shade and was of the Church of God faith.

Max L. Hutchison, 80, of Brimfield, Ill., died Sept. 12, 2008, at his residence in Brimfield. He was born May 6, 1928, in Sturkie, Ark., a son of William O. and Nova K. Peterson Hutchison. He married Violet S. Burnett on Oct. 5, 1953, in Pekin, Ill. She preceded him in death on Dec. 21, 1996.

Sue (Thompson) Bates, 64, of Ash Flat, Ark., died Sept. 10, 2008, at Hospice House in Mountain Home, Ark. She was the daughter of the late Thad Thompson and the late Hazel Sanford. Bates was the former owner of Sue Bates Advertising. She is survived by: her husband, Roger C. Bates.

Gene Ray Vaughn, 76, of Highland, Ark., died Sept. 16, 2008, at his residence. Gene was born in East St. Louis, Ill., on May 23, 1932, to the late Dudley and Lola (Lowrance) Vaughn. He was a veteran of the United States Army and worked as a mail carrier on the Franklin mail route for 21 years before he retired. Gene was a long time member of Highland First Assembly of God Church, a member of Full Gospel Business Men for many years.

Erma Louise Todd Ball died Sept. 15, 2008, in West Vue Nursing Center. She was born March 23, 1917, in Koshkonong, Mo., the daughter of the late Harry and Florence Humes Todd. On April 3, 1936, she was married at West Plains, Mo., to Fred William Ball who preceded her in death on April 14, 2001.

Hairold Loyd Burch, of Salem, Ark., son of the late Clarence Eccless and Alma Mae Mooney Burch, was born Jan. 20, 1935, in Fulton County. He died Sept. 19, 2008, at Arkansas Heart Hospital in Little Rock, Ark., at the age of 73. During his working years, he was a self employed farmer and a heavy equipment operator for a construction company. He was a 1955 graduate of Salem High School.

She is survived by: her companion, Charles Tinker of Highland; two daughters, Kathy Weigle of Peoria, Ill., and Judith Shuler of Maryville, Tenn.; two sons, Robert Hanks of Mound City, Mo., and John Hanks of Lewistown, Pa.; two sisters, Alice Todd of Loudon, Tenn., and Sue Hicks of Tennessee; one brother, Steve Collins of Philadelphia, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

Norman Fred Howell was born the son of Boyd and Irene Brahear Howell on Oct. 15, 1924, in Hutton Valley, Mo., and died Sept. 17, at his home in Koshkonong, Mo., at the age of 83. He was united in marriage June 15, 1944, at Salem, Ark., to Zella Marie Brazeal. Howell enjoyed horses and will be remembered for his ability and talent to train horses. On July 22, 2006, Norman was recognized for over 50 years of Horse Pulling and Horsemanship and was awarded the Horse Pullers Hall of Fame plaque.

She was united in marriage on Oct. 15, 1938, in Dalton, Ark., to Daniel "Sprout" H. Morgan, who preceded her in death on Jan. 2, 1982.

Jerry Wayne Jones of Melbourne, Ark., son of the late Billy Jack Jones and Dorothy Hellums Jones of Melbourne, was born June 28, 1957, in Oklahoma City, Okla. He died Feb. 6, 2009, in Melbourne, at the age of 51. He served in the United States Army during the Korean war. During his working years, Jerry was employed as an store inspector for Radio Shack. He also worked as a mechanic. He was of the Baptist faith and a member of the South Side Baptist Church in Altus, Okla.
