James Burke
James Winchester Burke, 82, died Thursday, September 30, in his home.
He was a resident of Marianna and a retired mechanic. He also was a
member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church and a army veteran of WWII.
Mr. Burke worked as a mechanic at Ford Motor Company and was in the
Marianna National Guard before joining the U.S. Army, during World War
II. He served in the 206 Coast Artillery Force in Alaska on the Aleutian
Islands as an auto mechanic and Captain's Sr. Chauffeur.
Returning from the Army, he was employed as a welder and mechanic for
Westerfield Chevrolet Company and then for Ross Hayes Grain Elevator
Company and farmed with his brother, the late Robert Burke.
He retired from farming to travel with his wife, visiting family and
friends.
He is survived by his wife, Rosa May Crosland Burke; one daughter,
Rosemary Burke Carroll of Tulsa, OK; one son, James C. Burke, Jr. of
Heber Springs; a sister, Malvania Ellen Thompson of Kalleman, TX; three
brothers, Connie Cornelius Burke of St. Louis, Samuel Moody Burke of
Ontonia, Alabama and Millard John Burke of Marianna; and two
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 4, at 10 a.m., at St. Andrews
Episcopal Church in Marianna with Rev. Tom Newman officiating. Burial
followed at LaGrange Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Wayne Smith, Vince DeSalvo, Tom Gist, Steve
Higginbothom, David Baily and Billy Pounds.
Arrangements were handled by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.
Terran Winston
Terran Winston, 53, died Wednesday, September 29, in his home.
He was a resident of Marianna and retired from Sanyo Mfg. He also was a
member of Walnut Grove Church.
He is survived by his wife, Nettie L. Winston; one son, William Terran
"Bill" Winston of Little Rock; two brothers, Maurice Larry Winston of
Detroit and Dennis Edward Winston of Port Arthur, Texas; one sister,
Lillie Perry Winfray of Memphis; and one grandson, Demarcus Markee
Winston and Christopher Rodney Winston, both of Little Rock.
He was preceded in death by Rodney Mose Winston.
Funeral services were held Saturday, October 2, at 1 p.m. at Walnut
Grove M.B. Church with Rev. T.J. Scott officiating. Burial followed at
Marianna Memorial Park.
Pallbearers were Dennis Edward Winston, Edward Buford, Travis Smith,
Paul Hansberry, Maurice Larry Winston, Irish Williams, Gabriel Shears
and Robert Ferrell.
Honorary pallbearers were the Shipping Dept. Crew at Sanyo Mfg.
Arrangements were handled by Hightower and Son Funeral Home.
Aaron Logan
Aaron Logan, 45, died Thursday, September 16, in his home.
He was a resident of Marianna and an employee of the Lee County
Cooperative Clinic. One of the greatest rewards of Aaron's life was his
work at the LCCC. This soon became his extended family. His work and
dedication to LCCC earned his the love and respect of all LCCC staff. He
worked at this facility until his health failed. Yet, this did not stop
him from coming to the clinic almost everyday.
He is survived by his mother, Christine Logan of Marianna; three
daughters, Kim Locke, Pamela Locke and Odessia Haywood, all of
Jonesboro; three sisters, Odessia Murrey and Delois Washington, both of
Marianna and Jo Ella Conley of Toledo, OH; two brothers, Arthur Ray
Logan of Marianna and Eugene Logan of West Memphis; and nine
grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 25, at 11 a.m., at
Pilgrim M.B. Church with Rev. Theadore Austin officiating. Burial
followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Bro. Arthur R. Logan, Bro. Eugene Logan, Bro. Alvin
Washington, Bro. Jonathan Logan, Bro. Michael Logan, and Bro. Richard
Murrey.
Honorary pallbearers were Bro. Willie Sawyer, Bro. Demetrius Rankin,
Bro. Jimmy Sawyer, Bro. Ellis Bryant, Bro. Tommie Brown and Bro. Bennie
Brewer.
Flower bearers and ushers were the Lee County Cooperative Clinic Staff.
Arrangements were handled by Hightower and Son Funeral Home.
Ida Blocker
Ida Blocker, 85, died Monday, October 4, in her home.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9, at Lee High School
Auditorium, at 2:30 p.m. Burial will follow at Pilgrim Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Marianna Funeral Home.
Mae Vanpelt
Mae Frances Vanpelt, 87, died Wednesday, September 29, at Baptist
Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 9, at 11 a.m., at Mt.
Gillian M.B. Church in Holub Crossing. Burial will follow at Gill
Cemetery.
Arrangements are being handled by Marianna Funeral Home.
Charles Gordon, Jr.
Charles P. Gordon, Jr., 61, died at his home in Moro. Mr. Gordon was
born in Gillett on October 21, 1937, to Mildred Jose Gordon of Gillett
and the late Charlie Park Gordon, Sr.
He is survived by his mother, Mildred Jose Gordon of Gillett; a
daughter, Debbie Gordon of Marianna; one son, David Gordon of Moro; a
sister, Jane Gordon Niebergall of Conroe, TX; one granddaughter,
Brittney Gordon of Moro; and one grandson, Kyle Gordon of Moro.
He was preceded in death by a son, Charles P. Gordon, III.
Graveside services were held on Friday, October 8, at Oak Grove Cemetery
in Moro at 2 p.m. with Rev. Russell Bailey and Rev. Charles Jones
officiating.
Pallbearers were Rusty Northcutt, Larry Gray, Chad Magee, Keith
Freeland, Roddy Reynolds and Ronald Joe Robinson.
Arrangements were handled by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in Marianna.
Memorials may be sent to LeBonheur Childrens Hospital and St. Jude
Childrens Research Hospital.
