Fred Caddell Jr.
Fred H. Caddell Jr., 74, of Van Buren, died Thursday, June 6, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, a retired carpenter for Sparks Cabinet Shop and was of nondenominational faith.
The body was cremated under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
He is survived by his wife, Martha; four daughters, Rhonda Bible of Van Buren, Julie Jones of Newport, N.C., Caressa Chambless of Columbia, S.C., and Tina Black of Summerville, S.C.; four sons, Lynn Goins of Raleigh, N.C., Steve and Kenneth Caddell, both of Houston, and Jon Caddell of Ladson, S.C.; two sisters, Catherine Dangerfield of Monks Corner, S.C., and Elizabeth Dangerfield of Summerville, S.C.; a brother, Teddy Caddell of Summerville, S.C.; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
David Schmidt
David L. Schmidt, 72, of Van Buren, died Monday, June 17, 2002, at a local hospital. He was an Air Force veteran of the Korean War, a retired computer technician, a former employee of the Southwest Times in Fort Smith, the Tucson newspaper and the Galveston Daily News and a member of Crockett Place United Methodist Church in Galveston, Texas.
Survivors include his wife, Virginia; two daughters, Donna Gordon of LaPorte, Texas, and Jennifer Bernard of Phoenix; two sisters, Bertha Pruett of La Marque, Texas, and Jessie Daly of Texas City, Texas; a brother, F.F. Schmidt Jr. of Texas City, Texas; and six grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at James Crowder Funeral Home Chapel in La Marque, Texas. Burial will be held at Galveston Memorial Park in Galveston, Texas. Local arrangements are under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Pallbearers will be friends.
Robert Johnson
Robert Raymond Johnson, 75, of Santee, Calif., died March 9, 2003. The native of Van Buren was a retired tool design engineer for Rohr, Lockheed and Convair and a member of Bass Masters and Model Aeronautics.
Survivors include his companion, Jean Plan; one daughter, Jean of Chula Vista; two sons, Robert C. and Jim, both of Chula Vista; two sisters, Jo Caughlin of Highlands Ranch, Colo., and Eleanor Pursell of Little Rock; two brothers, Richard of Little Rock and Darryl of Fort Smith; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Ray Toney
Ray Fountain Toney, 94, of Van Buren, died Saturday, June 15, 2002, at a local nursing home. He worked in defense plants in California during World War II and for Crawford County Highway Department for 20 years as a grader operator, was a 50-year member of Uniontown Masonic Lodge and was of the Assembly of God faith. He was preceded in death by his wife, Linnie Toney.
Survivors include a daughter, Reba Jean Sanders of Phoenix; a son, Russell D. Toney of Dexter, Ore.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held June 19 at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren. Masonic graveside service was held at Natural Dam.
Pallbearers were members of Masonic Lodge.
Catherine Johnson
Catherine L. Johnson, 63, of Kansas City, Mo., formerly of Van Buren, died Wednesday, June 5, 2002. She was an employee of the U.S. Treasurer Disbursement Center for 13 years and in housing management for 10 years and a member of Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church in Kansas City, Kan.
Survivors include two daughters, LaTanya Schiwain Clark and Renita Willie; two sons, Reginald Tyrone Johnson and Willie James Clark Jr.; her second mother, Mary Louise Williams of Van Buren; four sisters, Dorothy Slaughter, Betty Robinson, Clara Johnson and Lavern Pilgrim; two brothers, Freddy Eugene and Noel Henry Williams; 15 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; and her former husband, Willis James Clark Sr.
Funeral service was held June 14 at Pleasant Green Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of E.R. Morris Funeral Home of Kansas City, Mo.
Eula Welty
Eula Welty, 86, of Dover, formerly of Alma, died Sunday, June 9, 2002, at a Russellville hospital. She was a Baptist and was preceded in death by her husband, George.
Survivors include a daughter, Starla Welty of Dover; and a brother, Andrew Wilbanks of Boothwyn, Pa.
Graveside service was held June 11 at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Rev. Hubert Nelson
The Rev. Hubert Clifton Nelson, 68, of Alma, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at a local nursing home. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War, a retired die setter for Rheem Manufacturing in Fort Smith, he was pastor and founder of Kibler Freewill Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Sue Nelson.
Survivors include four daughters, Susan Hinkle of Rudy, Kathy Hyatt of Arkoma, Peggy Nelson of Alma and Mary Marvin of Mulberry; two sisters, Velta Edwards of Coweta, Okla., and Ruby Crisman of Paola, Kan.; a brother, Dolen Nelson of Mulberry; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Funeral service was held June 26 at Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home Chapel in Van Buren. Burial was at Woody Cemetery in Rudy.
Pallbearers were John Shelley, Benny Dyer, Buck Herring, Jim Howe, Andy Hinkle and William Pound.
Memorial contributions may be made to Zion Hope Youth Camp, Rudy.
Steven Syrock
Steven A. Syrock, 40, of Van Buren, died Saturday, Jan. 25, 2003, at his home. He was a retired manager of Guard Tronics and a member of the Bethlehem Freewill Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Brenda Rainwater Syrock; a daughter, Hannah Syrock of the home; and a sister, Sherry Clees of Albuquerque, N.M.
Funeral service was held Jan. 28 at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Allison Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Paul, Kenny and David Summerhill, Terry Syrock, Larry and Robert White and Tommy Don Wilson.
