Betty Farris
Betty Farris, 71, of Van Buren, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at a local hospital. She was a member of Van Buren First Presbyterian Church, Crawford Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, the Order of the Eastern Star in Gary, Ind., and Compassionate Ministries and a station master for the Chamber of Commerce. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hal.
Survivors include two daughters, Terry Watson of Van Buren and Laura Cyr Antolak of Rolla, Mo.; two sons, Joseph Cyr of Hammond, Ind., and George Cyr of Fort Smith; a brother, George Graham of Tulsa; and four grandchildren, Christopher Watson, David Cyr, Amy Cyr and Autumn McEachern..
Funeral service was held Sept. 20 at Van Buren First Presbyterian Church. Burial of cremains was at U.S. National Cemetery in Fort Smith under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Pallbearers were Ryan Peterson and Dan and Andy Comstock.

Garland Frazier
Garland Levi Frazier, 67, of Van Buren, died Monday, Sept. 23, 2002, at a local hospital. He was born in Sallisaw, attended Van Buren First Assembly of God and was a member of Masonic Lodge in Wichita, Kan. He was the retired owner of Frazier Custon Interiors and a former resident of Muldrow and Sallisaw.
Funeral was held Sept. 25 at Ocker Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Van Buren with burial at Akins Cemetery in Sallisaw.
He is survived by his wife, Rachel; a son, Garland Wayne Frazier of Muldrow; two stepsons, D.B. Merrill Jr. of Muskogee and Steven Ray Merrill of Sallisaw; five sisters, Bonnie Clark and Faye Frazier, both of Muldrow, Pauline Hanna of Fort Smith, Betty Peteet of Harleton, Texas, and Mary Ann Hammond of Roland; four brothers, Marion Frazier of Folcroft, Pa., Kenneth Frazier of Spiro, Homer Frazier of Kibler and Tommy Frazier of Hillsville, Va.; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Charles Remler, DeWayne Shakleford, Don Hardcastle, Mark Weatherton, David Riggs and Charles Peteet.
Herbert Hyde
Herbert C. Hyde, 84, of Van Buren, died Tuesday, Sept. 17, 2002, at a local nursing home. He was a Navy veteran of World War II, member of the Armour Avenue First Freewill Baptist Church and retired from Fort Smith Chair Company.
Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; a son, Melvin Hyde of Van Buren; two sisters, Vera Swaim of Van Buren, Pauline Betterton of Junction City, Ore.; a brother, E.F. Hyde of Porterville, Calif.; and three great-grandchildren, David, J.C., and Rachael.
Funeral service was held Sept. 20 at Armour Avenue First Freewill Baptist Church in Fort Smith. Burial was held at Forest Park Cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Pallbearers were James Hawkins, Don and Bill Swaim, Larry Hyde, Bob Sparkman and Farris Whited.
Verna Cawthron
Verna Mae Cathron, 91, of Van Buren, died Sunday, Sept. 22, 2002, at a local hospital. She was a homemaker.
Survivors include two daughters, Sandy Robson of Van Buren and Freeda Anderson of Alma; one son, Daylon Cawthon of Alma; one sister, Emma Lee Leftwich of Raymondville, Texas; four grandchildren, two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Graveside service was held Sept. 24 at Love Cemetery in Alma under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home.
Gladys Hanning
Gladys Clara Hanning, 84, died Monday, Aug. 12, 2002, at a Tulsa hospital. She lived most of her life in Van Buren, taught Sunday school, directed children’s church and was a housemother at Hillcrest Children’s Home.
Survivors include a sister, Pauline Smith of Shawnee, Okla., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral service was held Aug. 17 at Roesch-Walker Funeral Chapel. Burial was at Fairview Cemetery at Shawnee, Okla.
Pallbearers were Bill Cain, Ray Ashmore, Stephen Roden, Dennis Clayton, Marion Smtih and Eddie Huffstetler.
Mary Armer
Mary Christine Armer, 66, of Short, died Sunday, Aug. 25, 2002, at a local hospital. She was a homemaker and attended Lee Creek Assembly of God in Short.
Survivors include her husband, Leonard; two daughters, Carolyn Bethel of Van Buren and Teresa Edwards of Short; two sons, Jay Armer of Short and Kim Allen Armer of Kirkland, N.M.; seven sisters, Opal Tanner of Lincoln, Juanita Key of Kibler, Bernice Bodine of Van Buren, Ruby Roberts of Rudy, Mary Vaughn of Gentryville, Ind., Thelma Richmond of New Castle, Okla., and Sue Kerr of Tennessee; 10 grandsons and a great-granddaughter.
Funeral service was held Aug. 28 at Uniontown Assembly of God. Burial was at Seabolt Cemetery in Short under the direction of Edwards Van-Alma Funeral Home of Van Buren.
Pallbearers were her nephews.
Bessie Cluck
Bessie Lee Cluck, 87, of Chester, died Monday, Aug. 26, 2002, at a local hospital. She was a charter member of Chester Freewill Baptist Church and a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Berchie.
Survivors include one brother, Harrod Tester of Texas; one great-nephew, Berchie Tester of Chester; five nieces, Dorothy Duggin, Juanita Missavige, Shirley Branch, Marsha Smith and Carol Knowles; 10 nephews, Boyd Tester, James Tester, David Tester, Gill Smith, Robert Duggin, Jerry Duggin, Lester Duggin, Richard Duggin, Kenny Duggin and Buddy Duggin; and several great- and great-great nieces and nephews.
Funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at Chester Free Will Baptist Church. Burial will be held at Gracelawn Cemetery under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Alma.
Pallbearers will be her great and great-great-nephews.
Carl Wiley
Carl Duane Wiley, 59, of Stafford, Va., died Sunday, Aug. 11, 2002. He was a Navy veteran and a retired Union carpenter.
Survivors include his wife, Judy; a daughter, Shannon Wiley of Stafford, Va.; three sons, Lonnie Wiley of Leesburg, Va., Dirk Wiley of Shermans Dale, Pa., and Scott Wiley of Stafford, Va.; his stepson, Thomas Flynn of Stafford, Va., and stepmother, Maxine Wiley of Natural Dam; four sisters, Ida Mason, Ruth Grey and Doris Mankins, all of Natural Dam, and Louise Hallman of Cedarville; four brothers, Robert “Bo” and Earl Wiley, both of Natural Dam, Dennis Wiley of Tulsa and James Morehouse of Woodbridge, Va.; and four grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Aug. 17 at Grandview Assembly of God in Natural Dam. Burial was held at Hall Cemetery in Natural Dam under the direction of Ocker Funeral Home of Van Buren.
