Eunice Hemphill
Eunice Beck Hemphill, 80, died Tuesday, August 31, in West Memphis.
She was a resident of Hughes and a bookkeeper for the Hughes Furniture
Center. She also was a member of the Hughes United Methodist Church.
She is survived by one niece, Mrs. Carey Beck Goacher of Hughes and
several other family members and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Banks Hemphill.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 3, at the First United
Methodist Church in Hughes, at 11 a.m. Burial followed at Forrest Park
Cemetery in Forrest City.
Arrangements were handled by Stevens Funeral Home. Effie Thomas
Effie Reed Thomas died Thursday, August 5, at Yale New Haven Health
Center after a brief illness.
She was a resident of New Haven, CN and a member of the Church of Christ
in Yale, where she served in many capacities. She also received a
Bachelor Degree in Accounting from American University in Washington,
D.C.
Effie was owner and President of Urban Dynamics Consultants, Inc., a New
Haven Property Managements firm, for the past 24 years. During that time
she worked at Yale University as an accountant and coordinator of
Saybrook College.
Prior to that, she served as finance director of Polk County Community
Action Council in Des Moines, IA. She was an ardent supporter of
Organization dedicated to the Education of local youth. She was chair of
Links Inc. Scholarship Fund and a board member of the Inner City
Scholarship for independent school's.
Effie was a member of the Board of Directors of both the Yale New Haven
Hospital Auxiliary and the New Haven Sister Cities Program. She also was
a trustee of the New Haven Public Library.
She is survived by her husband, James A. Thomas; mother, Mrs. Carrie S.
Reed of Marianna; and two children, Michael A. Thomas of Virginia Beach,
VA and Karin Reed Minter of Durham, N.C.
She was preceded in death by her father, A.B. Reed.
Funeral services were held Monday, August 9, at noon, at the Church of
Christ in Yale. Burial followed at Grove Street Cemetery in New Haven.
Arrangements were handled by Keyes Funeral Home.
Sammie Henderson, Jr.
Sammie Henderson, Jr., 77, died Friday, August 27, in his home.
He was a resident of Rondo and a member of Friendship M.B. Church. He
also was a World War II Veteran.
As a citizen of the Friendship/Rondo Community for 77 years, he was
widely known. As a member of the Friendship M.B. Church, he served in
the choir, Sunday School, and as a deacon of the church he loved to sing
and regularly appeared on programs throughout Lee and Phillips Counties.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Naomi Henderson; four daughters, Erma
Watson, Fran Henderson, Daisy Neal and Shirley Chandler Cornelius; six
grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Willie Ella
Holden, Betty Henderson and Zettie Thomas.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 4, at 11 a.m., at
Friendship M.B. Church in Rondo with Rev. William Earl Johnson
officiating. Burial followed at Friendship Church Cemetery in Rondo.
Pallbearers were Steve Henderson, Rod Watson, Willie B. Watson, Chad
Henderson, Daryl Quiney and David Neal.
Honorary pallbearers were Deacons of Friendship M.B. Church.
Arrangements were handled by Hightower and Sons Funeral Home.
Jessie Petty, Sr.
Jessie Petty, Sr., 79, died Saturday, August 28, in his home.
He was a resident of Lee County and a member of Bible Deliverance
Center.
He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Ethel Petty; three sons, Wesley Petty
of Inglewood, CA, Jesse Petty, Jr. and Albert Petty, both of Marianna;
one daughter, Martha Petty of Marianna; one step-son, David Jackson of
Mesquite, Texas; two step-daughters, Carrie Sanders of Great Lakes, ILL
and Lorene Brown of Detroit; six grandsons and three granddaughters.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 2, at 12 noon, at Bible
Deliverance Center in Marianna with Minister Milton Hall officiating.
Burial followed at Mt. Zion Cemetery.
Pallbearers were sons and nephews.
Honorary pallbearers were Jack Farrar, Hosea Robinson and Cornelius
Forney.
Arrangements were handled by Hightower and Sons Funeral Home.
Dorthy Clemmons
Dorthy Clemmons, 49, died Friday, April 23, at St. Vincent Hospital in
Little Rock.
She was a resident of Little Rock.
She is survived by her mother, Lela Clemmons of Marianna; one daughter,
Latyna Clemmons of Little Rock; five sons, Maurice, Russel, Timothy and
Tellays Clemmons, all of Little Rock, and Rickey Clemmons of Seattle;
eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren; seven sisters, Lena
Trice and Zola Carter, both of Marianna, Ruby Beasley, Mammie Daniels
and Ella Jean McDowell, all of Little Rock, Latrica Nelson and Chrisceda
Stantz, both of Seattle; seven brothers, Joe Louis, Curtis, David,
Michael, Kevin and Farron Ray Clemmons, all of Seattle.
She was preceded in death by a brother, John Clemmons.
Funeral services were held Saturday, May 1, at 12 noon, at the
Cornerstone M.B. Church in Marianna with Dr. A.L. Banks officiating.
Burial followed at Pilgrim Cemetery.
Pallbearers were Curtis Clemmons, Kevin Clemmons, Charles Clemmons, Ray
Clemmons, David Clemmons and Larry Clemmons.
Honorary pallbearers were Rickey Clemmons, Russel Clemmons, Maurice
Clemmons, Timothy Clemmons and Tallays Clemmons.
Arrangements were handled by Hightower and Sons Funeral Home.
Alpha D. Harmon
Alpha D. Harmon, 95, died Saturday, July 24, in her home.
She was a resident of Marianna and a retired school teacher. She also
was a member of First Baptist Church in Marianna.
She is survived by a daughter, Alpha R. Hudson of Marianna; a son,
Maurice Harmon of Moro; one half-sister, Georgia G. Hendrickson of
Herndon, VA; five grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, July 26, at 2 p.m. at Roller-Citizens
Chapel in Marianna with Rev. Bill Elliot officiating. Burial followed at
Oak Grove Cemetery in Moro.
Pallbearers were James Bo Ligon, Billy Townsend, Floyd Bowman, Charles
Burns, Frank Gosha and Robert Vondran.
Honorary pallbearers were Ralph "Lucky" New and Jessie Smith.
Memorial may be sent to the American Heart Association.
Arrangements were handled by Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.
Lee McNair
Lee "Pop" McNair, 61, died Friday, June 25, at Minot Medical Center.
He was born January 26, 1938, to Homer and Jessimine McNair in Moro,
where he was raised and educated. He entered the Army in Little Rock on
March 27, 1959.
He married Agnes Sorrells on January 27, 1960, in Killeen, Texas. He was
discharged in Fort Hood, Texas on April 26, 1962. They moved to Los
Angeles in 1961, and returned to Arkansas in the late '60s. He was a
carpenter and worked at various construction jobs in the United States.
He and his wife moved to Minot in 1993.
He is survived by his wife, Anges Sorrells McNair; two sons, Ernie
McNair of Minot and Jack McNair of Okla.; one daughter, Melina McNair of
Minot; fourgrandchildren; six brothers, Ernest McNair of Rosebud, AR,
James McNair of Gulfport, Miss., Herbert McNair of Avon Park, Fla.,
Howard and Roger McNair, both of Denver and Charles McNair of Benton;
and four sisters, Mildred Watkins of Kokomo, Ind., Betty Fear of
McCracken, Kansas, Sara DeSautel of Huntsville, Texas and Patsy Edgin of
Marianna.
Memorial services were held Tuesday, June 27, at North Hill Baptist
Church in Minot.
Arrangements were handled by Thompson-Larson Funeral Home in Minot.
