Jack D. Pennington
Jack D. Pennington of Drasco died August 12, 2000 in the White River Medical Center at Batesville. He was the son of the late Claudis Pennington and Della (Phillips) Pennington. Born May 1, 1933 at Pierce, Okla., he was 67.
He and his late wife, Earlene, who died January 25, 2000, had made their home in Cleburne County since 1978.
He was a retired school teacher, a member of the National Education Association and he was active in the FFA Organization. He was a United States Army veteran serving in Korea. He was a member of the Lyford Baptist Church.
He is survived by his daughters, Dina Dollar of Drasco, Laura Smith of Truman and Jill Stark of Heber Springs; three grandchildren, Aaron, Amy and Rubin; nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services were held August 15 at the Macedonia General Baptist Church with Harmon Seawel and Jimmy McMasters conducting the service. Interment was in the Macedonia Cemetery. Pallbearers were Norman Phillips, John Treece, Donny Branscum, Hulan Spinks, Richard Blevins and Frank Monroe.
James Nathan Noel Verser
James Nathan Noel Verser of Woodrow, died August 23, 2000 at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Little Rock. Born in Cleburne County on October 6, 1926, he was 73. He was the son of Mabel (Martin) Verser and the late Jim Verser.
He was a retired saw miller and a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He was a Baptist.
He is survived his wife, Betty (Peel) Verser of Woodrow; one son, Gary Verser of Woodrow; one daughter, Jo Ann Barger of Ida; his mother, Mabel Verser of Woodrow; one brother, Leo Verser of Concord; two sisters, Helen Hipp and Myrene Stevens of Woodrow; six grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services and interment with military honors were held August 25 in the Verser Cemetery with Rev. Anthony Woods officiating. Heith Barger, Cole Verser, Kelly Verser, Jamie Hipp, Jason Hipp and Justin Hipp served as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearer was Cody Heith Barger.
William F. Howard Jr.
William F. Howard Jr., Lt. Col. United States Air Force, retired, died at his home on December 28, 2000. Born in Kansas City, Mo. on October 18, 1922, he was 78. He was the son of the late William F. and Hazel E. (Butcher) Howard Sr.
He retired from the United States Air Force as a Lt. Colonel with 27 years of service and was a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam. He has been a resident of Bee Branch for 30 years and was a member of the Christian Church.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey (Hawks) Howard of Bee Branch; one son, William F. Howard III of Shannon Hills; two daughters, Sharon Connors of Vi(?), Calif. and Debbie Howard of Conway; one brother, Ray Howard of Concord ; six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Services will be held January 3 at 2 p.m. in the Olmstead Chapel. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens with Military Honors by the United States Air Force. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Mary O. Vokes
Mary O. Vokes of Heber Springs died February 12, 2001. Born in Williamsburg, W.V. on March 28, 1934, she was 66. She was the daughter of the late Arnie and Florida (Clevenger) Morrison.
A resident of Heber Springs for five years, she was a retired real estate broker, a mother, a homemaker and a member of the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church.
She is survived by her husband, James W. Vokes Sr. of Heber Springs; two sons, James W. Vokes Jr. of Madrid, Iowa and Steven Vokes of Mississippi; two daughters, Sandra L. Struve and Karen Erickson of Iowa; nine grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. She is survived by other relatives and many friends.
Graveside services will be held February 16 at 10 a.m. in the Heber Springs Cemetery with Rev. John Miles officiating.
