William Carl Johnson
William Carl Johnson of Kansas City, Mo. died February 14, 2001 at the New Mark Care Center in Kansas City, Mo. Born October 4, 1913 in Arkansas, he was 87. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Samuel Johnson.
He was a retired farmer and a Baptist.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Alta (Mallonee) Johnson on April 29, 1993.
He is survived by one son, Carl Wayne Johnson of Kansas City, Mo.; one daughter, Joyce Smith of Tennessee and several grandchildren. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Visitation will be held February 19 at 10 a.m. in the Olmstead Chapel. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Interment will follow in the Sidon Cemetery.
Dr. Patsy Ruth Phelps
Dr. Patsy Ruth Phelps of Heber Springs died at her home on November 21, 2001. Born at Earle on May 3, 1923, she was 78. She was the daughter of the late Charley Idol and Nettye Lee (Ricketts) Phelps.
She was a retired pediatrician and had been a resident of Cleburne County since 1978. She was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Navy.
She is survived by numerous cousins, other relatives and friends.
Graveside services will be held November 23 at 11 a.m. at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens with Jed Hollan officiating.
Jesse M. James
Jesse M. James of Drasco died February 14, 2001 at Beverly Health Care in Heber Springs. Born September 27, 1917 at Brownsville, he was 83. He was the son of the late Joseph and Julie Ann (Hoover) James.
He was a retired farmer and a longtime resident of Cleburne County. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the United States Army. He was a member of Drasco General Baptist Church, where he served as song director for many years.
He is survived by his wife, Marie (Surgener) James of Drasco; one daughter, Velma Burks and husband, Dr. Willard Burks, of Wynne; two brothers, Walter James and Fred James of Heber Springs; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. He is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Services will be held February 17 at 2 p.m. in the Drasco General Baptist Church with Rev. Billy Henderson and Rev. Adolph Lacy officiating. Interment will follow in the Antioch Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Willard Burks Jr., Jonathan Burks, David Dowd, Jason Cornelison, Jon Cornelison and Brian Harlan. Honorary pallbearers will be Junior Baker, Charles Norton, Ward Davis, Harold Dean Lacy, Kenneth Foust and Preston Helms.
Nellie V. Markham
Nellie V. Markham of Heber Springs died February 26, 2001 at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born in Brewer on January 6, 1912, she was 89. She was the daughter of the late Alexandra and Mary L. (Bickle) Mabry.
A lifetime resident of Cleburne County, she was a mother, a homemaker and Pentecostal.
She was preceded in death by one son, Carl Elms.
She is survived by three granddaughters, Debra Speights and husband, Jerry, of Heber Springs, Kathleen Levesque and husband, David, of California and Cynthia Peace and husband, Robert, of Illinois; For grandsons, Samuel Elms, Robert Elms and wife, Antoinette and John Elms of California and Wayne Miller of Greenbrier and two great grandchildren. She is also survived by other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services will be held March 1 at 10 a.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Dennis Distin officiating. Interment will follow in the Heber Springs Cemetery.
