Adell A. Bata, 99, of Edmond, Ok. (formerly of New Blaine) died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002.
She was born Sept. 14, 1903 in New Blaine. She was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church in Shawnee, Ok. She was an active member and past president of a garden club. She worked in the mailroom and was an operator of the main switchboard for the Oklahoma Baptist University. She was preceded in death by his husband, Jessie Alvin Bata, parents, Will and Annie (Birkhead) Thompson.
Graveside service was at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Oct. 16 in the Elizabeth Hall cemetery in New Blaine under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by one daugher, Patti J. Hyde of Edmond, Okla.; two grandsons; and seven great-grandchildren.
Paul Murphy
Paul W. Murphy, 58, of Charleston (formerly of Ranger, Tex.) died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002.
He was born Oct. 8, 1944 in Ranger, Tex. and was retired from the city of Fort Worth, Tex. He served in the US Army from 1965-68. Served time in Vietnam, obtained specialist status as well as the National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Commendation Medal, Vietnam service medal with three bronze stars and Vietnam Gallantry Cross with Palm. He was past Post Commander, Junior Vice Commander, Adjutant and Assistant Quartermaster in his VFW Post, and a life member of the VFW. He was also a member of the United Patriots of America where he served two terms. He was preceded in death by his wife, Juanita Morgan Murphy; parents, Jackson Lee and Annie Lucille Robinson Murphy.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at Smith Mortuary Chapel with burial at Evergreen cemetery in Ranger, Tex. under the direction of Smith Mortuary of Charleston. There was a graveside service at Evergreen cemetery under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home, Ranger, Tex.
He is survived by one step-daughter, Patricia Hargrave; one step-son, Jimmy Morgan; four brothers, Richard Murphy of White Oak, Tex., Gary Don, Raymond and A. Dwaine Murphy all of Wills Point, Tex.; one half-brother, Dale Clark of Wills Point, Tex.; four step-granchildren; and one step-great-grandchild.
Pallbearers were members of the VFW Post 4136 in Eastland, Tex.
Memorial contributions may be made to VFW of Eastland, Tex., Vietnam Veterans Memorial or the American Cancer Society.
Tom Grice
Tom Grice, 68, of Salinas, Calif. died after an extended illness.
He was born in Logan County and attended County Line School.
He is survived by his wife, Ada Barnett Grice; four sons; and numerous grandchildren.
Funeral service was held Oct. 15 at Healery Mortuary with burial at Queen of Heaven cemetery in Salinas, Calif.
Rose Covey
Rose Esther Covey, 56, of Bellville died Friday, Oct. 18, 2002 in Danville.
She was born Aug. 3, 1946 in Booneville to the late Coye Brannam and Margaret Bobbitt. She was a mother and a homemaker.
She is survived by her husband, Daviye Covey; one son, Jeremy Covey of Chickalah Mountain; two daughters, Amy Covey of Chickalah Mountain, Dianne Helton of Magazine; three brothers, Richard Brannam of Huntington, Damon Brannam of Fort Smith and Larry Brannam of Waveland; six sisters, Joyce Rushing of Lavaca, Ruth Walker of Sugar Cove, Brenda Robinson of Paris, Martha Smith of Havana, Marilyn Burrows of Charleston, Doris Robinson of Belleville; and two grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Monday, Oct. 21 at 2 p.m. at the Chickalah Mountain cemetery the Rev. Lynn Weaver and Br. Bob Chism officiated. Arrangements by Cornwell Funeral Home of Danville.
Arrevia Parsons
Arrevia Parsons, 87, of Midway, died Saturday, Oct. 19, 2002.
She was a member of Midway Assembly of God Church.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 22 at Midway Assembly of God Church with burial at Horne cemetery in Midway under the direction of Murry Funeral Home of Paris.
She is survived by her husband, Luther Parsons; one daughter, Elwanda Robinson of Paris; one son, Larry Parsons of Subiaco; four grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Rhinehart, Russell Rhinehart, Billy Dean Rhinehart, Lindell Parsons, Ronnie Parsons and Wesley White.
Randy Sharp
Randy Sharp, 53, of Paris died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002 in a local hospital.
He was of the Assembly of God faith.
Graveside service was conducted Friday, Oct. 11 in Knoxville, Tenn. under the direction of Myhatt Funeral Home of Knoxville. Local arrangements were under the direction of Murry Funeral Home of Paris.
He is survived by two daughters, Pamela and Renee Sharp, both of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Maggie Bower of Bellville, Ohio, and Dianne Orr of Knoxville, Tenn.; four brothers, Jeff Sharp of Delphi, Ind., James Sharp of Knoxville, Tenn., Sterling Sharp of Powell, Tenn. and Frederick Sharp of Subiaco and one grandchild.
Martha Dove
Martha Bell Dove, 97, of Little Rock died Monday, Oct. 7. She was born on March 27, 1905 in Paris and was of the Pentecostal faith.
Funeral services were held at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 11 at North Little Rock Funeral Home Chapel with Pastor George Yarberry officiating. Burial followed at Hickory Grove cemetery in Subiaco at 2 p.m. with Rev. Eldon Thomas officiating.
Survivors include five daughters, Ola Sims of Scott, Ocie Wilhite, Bessie Sartin and Mary Fiser, all of Little Rock and Ruby Anthony of Greenbrier; two sons, Ralph Dove of Jacksonville and Billy Dove of Little Rock; 43 grandchildren, 97 great-grandchildren and 48 great-great grandchildren.
Lowell Birkhead
Lowell S. Birkhead, 89, of Dardanelle died Thursday, Oct. 10, 2002 at his home in Dardanelle. He was born Oct. 6, 1913 in New Blaine, to the late O.B. and Emma McReynolds Birkhead. He was a retired employee of Deltic Farm and Timber, a retired volunteer of the Dardanelle Fire Department and a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dardanelle. He was preceded in death by a brother, Keith Birkhead.
Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12 at Cornwell Chapel in Dardanelle. Interment was in Elizabeth Hall cemetery by Cornwell Funeral Home of Dardanelle.
Survivors are his wife of 70 years, Corlela Jones Birkhead; one daughter, Mavis Welsh of Maumelle; one son, Lowell Dean Birkhead of Morrilton; two sisters, Wanda M. Brewer of Dardanelle and Zola R. Pilgreen of Wichita, Kans.; one brother, Wayne Birkhead of Dardanelle; four grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Kip Welsh, Jason Welsh, Wayne Harper, Jordan Harper, Jeff Hunt, Brent Birkhead, Bailey Hunt and Bedford Hunt.
Hershel Wiggins
Hershel Wiggins, 66, of Paris, died Saturday, Oct. 12, 2002.
He was a retired businessman and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Paris. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alva Hershel and Minazelle (McKeen) Wiggins.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 15 at First United Methodist Chuch in Paris under the direction of Roller Funeral Home of Paris. Burial was at Oakwood cemetery in Paris.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Lou Wiggins of the home; one daughter, Suzanne Ramsey of Paris; two sons, Skip and John Wiggins both of Paris; three brothers, Dr. James Wiggins of Little Rock, Tom Wiggins of Booneville and Dr. Ted Wiggins of Springdale; and four grandchildren.
Bertha Fields
Bertha Faye Fields, 97, of Magazine, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.
She was a member of Little Vine Primitive Baptist Church in Blue Mountain for 76 years. She was also a member of the Retired Teachers Association.
Funeral service was at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 4 at Little Vine Primitive Baptist with burial at Blue Mountain cemetery in Blue Mountain under the direction of Roller Funeral Homeof Booneville.
She is survived by one daughter, Wilma Jean Labahn of Russellville; two sons, James Clinton Fields and Phillip Wayne Fields both of Booneville; and three grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Charles McConnell, Bill Catlett, Billy Walker Beason, Bill Turner, Ray Forst and Stanley McConnell.
Honorary pallbearer was Larry Staton.
Corine Colburn
Corine L. Riley Colburn, 84, of Caulksville, died Monday, Sept. 30, 2002.
She was born March 11, 1918 in Logan County to Omer Riley and Goldner Hall Riley. She was a homemaker, and a member of Caulksville Presbyterian Church. She was preceded in death by her husband Clyde "Bee" Colburn and one son, Ronnie Colburn
Funeral service was at 2 p.m. Thurday, Oct. 3 at Caulksville Cumberland Presbyterian Church with burial at Caulksville cemetery under the direction of Smith Mortuary Inc. of Charleston.
She is survived by one daughter, Barbara Clayborn of Wichita, Kan.; one son, Jimmy Colburn of Caulksville; three sisters, Betty Lou Riley and Mary Sue Riley both of Branch, and Johnnie Mae Kohler; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 10 great-great-granchildren.
Pallbearers were Haskell Casalman, Lyndell Hill, Todd Patterson, Jimmy Patterson, Joe Mack Patterson and Benny Rausch.
