Dorothy Ann Harris
10/23/1920 - 6/3/2004
Dorothy Ann Harris of Little Rock died Thursday, June 3, 2004. She grew up as Dorothy Ann Swindell in Prescott, Arkansas and had thirteen brothers and sisters. Only one brother survives her, Windy McVay of Tucson, Arizona. In 1941 she married
Lawrence Harris. They had been married
for 63 years. During the last two years her failing health required that he dedicate much of his time to her care. He survives her as do two sons, Larry Harris of Memphis, Tennessee and Mike Harris of Little Rock. Their wives, Carolyn and Becky, have been like daughters to her. She is also survived by five grandchildren, Lawryn Birdwell, Chris Harris and Blake Harris, all of Memphis, Alicia Wood of Atlanta, Georgia and Adana Buttrum of Henderson, Tennessee. Seven great grandchildren and many friends also survive her.
She grew up in a home where down-and-out people were always offered a bed. When she became an adult, the Harris home was no different. Their home hosted nieces, nephews, her mom, and her grandchildren, often for months at a time. It became the place where all the neighborhood kids or church youth group hung out. There was always plenty to eat, and what a cook she was! Her sons were often greeted after school with pies, strips of crust, or meringue.
She filled her home with singing. Whether it was the Everly Brothers, Perry Como, Rosemary Clooney, Sam Cooke, or Patsy Cline on the radio made no difference. If the radio was on she was singing.
She was a devoted wife. There was never a day when she did not kiss Lawrence (L.E.) goodbye as he went off to work, or greet him with a kiss as he came home. She was a devoted Christian. She taught Bible class for many years at the Sixth and Izard Church of Christ, and also taught at the day school connected with the church for several years.
Lord, this is Dorothy Ann Swindell Harris, known as Mom, Aunt Dot, Moochie, Dottie, Meme and Gram. She has served you well. Please reward her with a long rest, free from pain. We praise you for her life.
The funeral service will be at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, June 5, 2004 at Roller-Chenal Funeral Home Chapel (224-8300) with Mr. John Gipson and Mr. Nick Hamilton officiating. Interment will be in Pinecrest Memorial Park.
