In the early hours of Sunday, September 09, 2007, the Lord looked down upon his faithful servant, saw how tired she was and said, "Come Home." God knew she was the embodiment of what a good christian should be. Sister Young was a friend to all and never met a stranger. This fact was proven by the many phone calls, visits, and outpourings of love shown to her family.
Hester Young was one of four children born to Anderson Hodges Sr. and Ellen Brooks Hodges on July 9, 1920 in Little Rock, Arkansas. She attended Little Rock Public Schools and at an early age, became a member of Mt Zion Baptist Church under the pastoral leadership of Rev. Fred T. Guy.
During her younger years, sister Young's older sister, Sarah, passed away leaving three small children, whom she helped raise and nurture. She repeated this when her step-mother died, leaving a five year old, Vickie.
Charles Young, helpless against her beauty (there are NO ugly folks in the Hodges family-per Skeet) and sweet nature, was smitten and they were married
in 1943. They were two lovebirds until his untimely death in 1967.
Hester Young worked in many different positions from caregiver to bank hostess. In every job and position, she left a lasting impression on everyone, from small children, to bank presidents and judges.
Mourning her loss are two brothers, Arthur Hodges (Skeet) of Little Rock, Arkansas and Charles Hodges (Charlie Boy) of Manteca, California; along with the nieces and nephew she helped raise, Dollie, John (Weese) and Ann (Tiny). There are many other nephews, nieces, cousins, and friends, too numerous to mention by name, who dearly loved her and will truly miss her birthday calls. If Sister Young had her way, she would name them all and give them a two dollar bill!! What a legacy!!
If we all aspired to follow in her footsteps, wouldn't this world be a nicer place? Can this be a goal for which we all strive?
