WILLIAM BAREFIELD

Funeral services for William Barefield, 63, of Marvell were held Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Trenton. The Rev. W.R. Parks officiated. Burial was at the Trenton cemetery in the Trenton community.

Barefield, born Oct. 26, 1939, in the Santuck community, to William and Rosie Mae Ford Barefield, died March 31, 2003, at the University Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio.

He leaves a son, Robert Barefield; three brothers, George Barefield of Richmond, Calif., Elihue Barefield and John Barefield of Marvell; five sisters, Mary Webb of Houston, Texas, Deloris Thompson of Salinas, Calif., Ann Childress of Toledo, Ohio, Shirley Jarrett of West Helena and Thelma Gaines of Houston, Texas; and one grandchild and one great-grandchild.

Bob Neal and Sons-Brickell Funeral Home directed services.

RICHARD JACKSON

Funeral services for Richard Jackson, 77, of Elaine will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 12 at the Christian Stone Church in Elaine. Burial will be in the St. Peter cemetery in Elaine.

Jackson, born May 27, 1925, to the late Walter and Annie Jackson in Oxford, Miss., died April 5, 2003, at his home in Elaine.

Visitation will be from 1 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 11, 2003, at the chapel of Jackson and Highley Funeral Home.

He was baptized in 1948 under the leadership of Rev. Otter Tate. He was a member of the New Hope M.B. Church.

In 1950, he married Annie Lee Portee, and to their union four children were born. A daughter, Lucile, preceded him in death.

He later married Minnie Britton, and to their union three children were born, but there was a total of five, for he considered Ernestine Reynolds and Perry Reed as his own.

He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Minnie Jackson of Lambrook; five sons and their families, Richard Jackson Jr., of Marks, Miss., Johnny and Easter Jackson of Milwaukee, Wis., Kenny and Tawanna Jackson of Lake View, Tyrone Jackson of Lambrook and Perry Reed of Richmond, Calif.; three daughters, Jackie Jackson of Helena, Dorothy and Cedric McCraney of Crumrod and Earnestine Reynolds of Lambrook; 25 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; three brothers, Walter Jackson Jr., J.W. Jackson and Bruce Jackson of Chicago, Ill.; a sister, Lillie Mae Jackson; and a host of brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Jackson and Highley Funeral Home will direct services.

JEFF MCKENZIE

Funeral Services for Jeff McKenzie, of Chicago, Ill., and formerly of West Helena, will be held at 11:00 a.m. Monday, April 7, 2003, at Truevine Baptist Church. The Rev. Lonnie Whitfield will officiate. Jeff died Monday, March 31, 2003, in Chicago. Burial will be in Jackson Memorial cemetery in the Southland Community.

He was born August 10, 1914, in Aubrey, Ark., to Abrom and Rachel Russell-McKenzie. He married Mary Alice Tate in 1940 and she preceded him in death in 1994. He moved to Chicago to live with his daughter in November 1993.

He leaves two daughters, Verlyn Campbell of Memphis, Tenn., and Earlene Tyree (Melvin) of Chicago; a sister in-law, Annie Carter of Chicago; five grandchildren, Diane (Wayne) Robinson, Jennifer Campbell of Atlanta, Ga., Latanya (Dannie) Johnson of Miami, Fla., Jacquelyn (Don) Jones of Houston, Texas, and William J. Ross of Chicago; and five great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives.

Jeff had four brothers, four sisters and one son in-law, Johnny Campbell, who preceded him in death.

Jackson Highley Funeral Home in West Helena will direct the services.

JESSIE PEARSON

Funeral services for Jessie Mae Pearson, 71, of Elaine will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Pilgrim Guide Baptist Church in Elaine. The Rev. James Baker will officiate. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at the chapel of Brown's Home for Funerals in West Helena.

Pearson, born Feb. 2, 1932, to Arlean Carr and Tom Canady, died March 29, 2003, at her home in the Modoc community near Elaine.

She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age in Clover Hill, Miss. She later moved to Modoc and joined the Pilgrim Guide M.B. Church, under the leadership of the late Rev. E.D. Nix. She was the mother to 12 children. She was employed for many years as a farm worker, after retirement she became a housewife, was a gardener and loved growing flowers. She enjoyed fishing with her two grandsons and served as the president of the usher board and served as a church mother at Pilgrim Guide Church. She was also a faithful member of the Women's Community Choir.

Her mother, father, three sisters, three brothers, two daughters and two sons preceded her in death.

She leaves to cherish her memory her husband, Morris Lee Pearson; four sons and their families, Sampon Hickey of Chicago, Ill., Alvin and Lesha Hickey of Little Rock, Calvin and Pearl Hickey of Forrest City and Ben Tye III of Helena; four daughters and their families, Jessie and Robert Simpson and Ethel Lee Hickey of Battle Creek, Mich., Ora and Arthur Scaife of Elaine, Mary Ann and Manuel Hart of Elaine; a sister, Addie B. Griffin of Helena; two special grandsons, Epluribus D. Thurman and Dakendrick M. Scaife; 28 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; a special daughter-in-law, Mattie Bee Hickey; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Brown's Home for Funerals will direct services.

MAXCINE Y. WILLIAMS

Funeral services for Maxcine Young Williams, 73, of Atlanta, Texas, and formerly of West Helena, will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the chapel of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in West Helena. The Rev. J.L. Sanders will officiate. Burial will be at Marianna Memorial Park in Marianna.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Saturday, April 5, 2003, at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home.

Williams, born Sept. 9, 1929, in Frost, Texas, died April 3, 2003, at her home in Atlanta.

She leaves two sons and daughters-in-law, Johnny and Diane Young of Douglasville, Texas, and Jimmy and Ladonna Young of McCloud, Texas; four brothers, Cecil Horne of Helena, Curtis Horne of Chillicothe, Mo., Bill Horne of West Helena and Jim Horne of Gettysburg, Pa.; three sisters, Doris Evans of Wichita Falls, Texas, Evelyn Owens and Iva Walker of West Helena; and six grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.

Her first husband, J.T. Young, son Rickey Young and her second husband, Robert D. Williams, preceded her in death.

Pallbearers will be Charles Walls, Roy Henson, Tommy Ford, Bryan Ford, Tim Gibson Brandon Millwood, and Scotty Freeman.

Roller-Citizens Funeral Home will direct services.

MARY CAMPBELL

Funeral services for Mary Jane Campbell, 70, of Wabash will be held at noon Saturday, April 5, 2003, at the Old Jerusalem Baptist Church in Wabash. The Rev. Artis James will officiate. Burial will be at the First Baptist Church cemetery in Elaine.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, April 4, 2003, at the chapel of Brown's Home for Funerals.

Campbell, born Aug. 5, 1932, to Elbert and Rebecca Johnson, died March 31, 2003, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis Tenn.

She confessed a hope in Christ at an early age and was a member of the Old Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church under the direction of Rev. C.B. Bingham.

She was united in marriage to James C. Campbell on July 23, 1949, and eleven children were born to their union.

She leaves a devoted ex-husband, James C. Campbell of West Helena; a sister, Earnestine Johnson of West Helena; a brother, Lyndon Johnson of Snow Lake; five daughters, Dorothy Miller of Lawton, Okla., Mary McWright and Mary A. Campbell of Memphis, Tenn., Rebecca Massenburg of Leavenworth, Kan., Christine Campbell Baker of Lawton, Okla., and Sharon Bowman of Memphis; four sons, David Campbell of Pine Bluff, James Campbell of Tacoma, Wash., Lionel Campbell of Harlingen, Texas, and Dennis Campbell of Decatur, Ga.; and 19 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces and nephews.

One son, Jerry Campbell, preceded her in death.

Brown's Home for Funerals in West Helena will direct services.

WILLIAM P. SIMPSON

William P. Simpson, 69, a railroad employee of West Helena, died Thursday, April 3, 2003.

Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Sunday, April 6, 2003, at the chapel of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in Marianna.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Roller-Citizens in Marianna with Burial in the LaGrange cemetery.

BESSIE BLUMINGBURG

Funeral services for Bessie Blumburg, 51, of Arkansas will be held at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at Macidona M.B. Church and the final resting place will be Pilgrim Rest cemetery.

Blumburg, born January 29, 1952 in Wabash, died September 11, 2003 in Memphis, Tenn. She confessed her faith in Christ and was baptized at an early age. Later, she joined the Community Covenant Church with Pastor Dan Davenport of Claumet Park, Ill. She then joined First Baptist Church in Lake View.

She leaves three sons, Jimmy Williams of Arcadia, Ill, Donny Blumingburg of Chicago, Ill, Rodney Blumingburg of Lake View, a special partner in life Kenneth Dolphin of Lakeview, six sisters, Bobbie, Erma Jackson of Lake View, Diann Thomas of Calumet Park, Ill, Patricia Robinson of Chicago, Ill, Kayrene Jones of Bolling Brook, Ill, and Sandra Williams of Helena, a niece, Patricia Williams of Chicago, Ill, a brother, Larry Williams of Dolton, Ill, an aunt, Alma Wheats of Chicago, Ill, an uncle, Robert Ross of Wabash, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Two brothers, James Williams and Otis Williams proceed her in death.

Jackson-Highley Funeral Home will direct servicse.

OPHELLA DAVIS GATES

Funeral services for Ophella Davis Gates, 60, will be held at noon, Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at True Vine Baptist Church, in West Helena. The Rev. Lonnie Whitfield will officiate.

Gates, born Dec. 1, 1942, in Elaine, died Sept. 13, 2003 at St. Vincent's Hospital in Little Rock. She worked a variety of jobs including as a farmer and also provided child care to many children. She also was a faithful member of the True Vine Baptist Church in West Helena where she served on the Usher Board until her health failed.

She leaves three daughters, Ida Lue Gates, Barbara Jean Gates, and Earnestine Gates Vaughn, all of West Helena, ason, Mack Arthur Gates of Newport, two brothers, Elijah Davis, Sr. of West Helena and Linard Davis of Chicago, Ill, a special aunt, Frankie Mae Robinson, and a special friend, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren, and a host of uncles, aunts, nephews, nieces, cousins and frieds.

Her brother, Waverly Lee Davis, a son, Henry Gates, and a daughter, Louise Gates proceed her in death.

MARY LILLIAN RUSH

Funeral services for Mary Lillian Rush, 72, will be held Saturday, Sept. 20, 2003, at the Jackson Chapel Church of God in Christ Southland Community. The Rev. Eugene Wright will officiate. Burial will be at Jackson Memorial cemetery in the Southland Community.

Rush, born March 29, 1931, died September 12, 2003.

She leaves three sons, Tony Rush and Joe Natham Rush, both of Carson City, Calif., and Milton Rush of Toledo, Ohio, three daughters, Marilyn Burrell of West Helena, Belinda Coleman of Lawton, Okla., and Elizabeth Rush of Lexa, and a host of friends and relatives.

Visitation will be Friday, Sept. 19, 2003 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Stephens Funeral Home Chapel.

Stephens Funeral Home will direct services.

CLARA GRIFFIN

Funeral services for Clara King Griffin, 89, of Marvell will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 13, 2003 at the Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Marvell. The Rev. Tara Newman will officiate. Burial will be at the Lone Valley cemetery in Marvell.

Visitation will be from 3 until 8 p.m. Friday at the chapel of Brown Funeral Home in Pine Bluff.

Griffin, born July 30, 1914, in Marvell, died Sept. 8, 2003, at Helena Regional Medical Center.

She was a member of the Wesley Chapel A.M.E. Church in Marvell and was a member of the Order of Eastern Star.

The family will be at 504 Wallace Street, home of Mrs. Naomi Moore and additional visitation will be from 11:30 a.m. until the funeral at the Wesley Chapel Church.

She leaves a son John Thomas Griffin Sr., of Helena; two daughters, Corene Griffin White of St. Louis, Mo., and Naomi Griffin Moore of Marvell; a brother Rexie Alexander King of Washington, D.C. seven grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren.

Her parents Thomas Henry King and Rosie (Hunter) King and husband James Griffin Sr.preceded her in death.

Brown's Funeral Home in Pine Bluff will direct services.
