Frank L. Wiggins, 88, of Heber Springs, died at his home on Eden Isle of leukemia on August 1, 2003. Born September 25, 1914, in Lakeland, Florida, he moved to Arkansas in 1936 to work at W. T. Grant in Little Rock, where he met and married
Merriam Roebuck of Little Rock on January 23, 1937. They moved to Houston, Texas, in 1938, where Frank joined Sears, beginning a 35-year career. During World War II, Frank joined the Army in 1942, serving in Wyoming, India, and China until leaving his captain s bars and returning to Sears at the beginning of 1945. Over the years Sears transferred Frank from Houston to Chicago to Dallas to Victoria, Texas, to Midland, Texas, to Alexandria, Louisiana, and finally to Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1966, where he retired as a Group General Manager in 1973. After his retirement, he bought into Ray West Warehouses, Inc. in Corpus Christi in 1974, served as President from 1975 to 1988, and Chairman from 1988 to 1993. His children remain involved with this company. Frank also served on the Board of Directors of Parkdale State Bank in Corpus Christi. During this time, he semi-retired in 1982 and began spending summers in Heber Springs to be near his wife s family. In 1990, Frank and Merriam moved to Heber Springs permanently. Frank was a member of the Heber Springs First United Methodist Church and was a 50-year member of Rotary Clubs International, most recently of the Heber Springs Rotary Club. Frank was a kind and caring man who touched thousands of lives with his generosity and charity. Frank was also a humble man; his donations were often anonymous, and few people knew that he received a letter of commendation from the NAACP for hiring the first African-American salespeople in Alexandria, Louisiana, in 1963 when he was managing the local Sears store. Frank s proudest achievement was that although he had to drop out of high school in the 10th grade to work to support his family, his four children and five grandchildren all finished college and have nineteen college degrees among them. Frank also went to night school and continued his education on his own throughout his life, taking correspondence courses with the University of Houston and New York University.
