Rosa Lee (Scott) Hooker, age 67, of Mt. Ida, Arkansas, passed away Monday, October 3, 2005, at St. Joseph’s Mercy Health Center in Hot Springs. Born at Wilburn, Arkansas, on August 22, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Walter Augusta and Ida Mae (Philmalee) Scott. A former resident of Plainview, Mrs. Hooker had lived at Mt. Ida for the past five years. She was a homemaker and enjoyed her family and grandchildren. Her religious belief was Baptist. Mrs. Hooker was preceded in death by her parents and one daughter, Donna Smith. Survivors include her husband, Donald Hooker, Sr. of Mt. Ida; two sons, Bennie Smith of Story and Donald Hooker of Bodcaw; two daughters, Carolyn Williams of Quitman and Jennie Henson of Jefferson City, Tennessee; her brothers and sisters, Gladys Gibson and Lois Valasqez, both of California, Arlen Scott of Briggsville, Shelby Scott of Rover, Donald Scott, Loyd Scott, and Hazel Scott, all of Planeville, and six grandchildren, Michael Williams and Jerry Williams, both of Quitman, Hayden Hooker and Morgan Hooker, both of Bodcaw, Matthew Henson of Jefferson City, Tennessee, and Kyle Smith of Story. Mrs. Hooker is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Frances Phillips Richmond
Frances Phillips Richmond, 84, of Heber Springs, Arkansas passed away Friday, September 30th, 2005. She was born in Cairo, Illinois in 1920 to Isom and Gertrude Phillips. She was a faithful member of St. Francis Episcopal Church in Heber Springs where she was a Daughter of the King.
Fran was preceded in death by her husband, Roy F. Richmond. She is survived by her three children: Dana Pryor and husband Rick, of Austin, Lisa Dillman and husband Mark, of Romance, and Philip Richmond of Searcy. Other survivors include Mitzi Richmond of Little Rock; seven grandchildren: Matt Johnson and wife Catherine, Leslie and Erin Richmond, Luke, Austin, and Leah Dillman, and Alex Richmond; and two great-grandchildren: Halle and Emma.
A memorial service will be held at St. Francis Episcopal Church in Heber Springs on Wednesday, October 5, 2005 at 2:00 pm. Wallace Eugene Hope
Wallace Eugene Hope the son of William Eugene and Morlie Dier Hope was born in Amite, Louisiana on September 12, 1919 and passed away in Heber Springs, Arkansas on September 30, 2005 at the age of 86 years. Mr. Hope was retired from management in Amoco Oil Company. He attended the Fairfield Bay Baptist Church and was a member of the Fairfield Bay Lions Club. He was active in the Future Farmers of America and was a judge for the Agri Business Award for many years in the Kansas City area. Mr. Hope was a veteran of World War II having served in the Army Air Corps. He is survived by his wife Elizabeth Gann Hope, a son William M. Hope, a sister Ester Harper and a grandson Spence Hope besides nieces, nephews other relatives and many friends.

Darlene Louise Dykstra
Darlene Louise Dykstra the daughter of Peter and Rosella Hoyme Page was born in Valley Springs, South Dakota on April 29, 1929 and passed away in Shirley, Arkansas on September 30, 2005 at the age of 76 years. Mrs. Dykstra moved to Sioux Falls, South Dakota in 1942. She graduated from Washington High School in 1948. She and her husband Louis moved to farm in Colman, South Dakota in 1961 and farmed there until 1977 when they moved to Mt. Grove Missouri and were in the dairy farming business until 1982. They started working in the motel management business and continued in this until retiring to Fairfield Bay in 1996. Louis passed away on June 18, 1997. Mrs. Dykstra was a member of the Peace Lutheran Church in Edgemont. Everywhere she lived she was active in her church, she was a member of the mission group, taught Sunday school class, vacation bible school and was a substitute school teacher everywhere she lived. She enjoyed quilting, gardening, flowers, bird watching and reading. She is survived by two sons Dan and his wife Lisa of Shirley, Jeff and his wife Melinda of Columbus, Nebraska, three brothers Pete Page and his wife Loraine of South Dakota, Jim Page and his wife Vivian of South Dakota and Don Page and his wife Delores of Arizona: five grandchildren Kayla, Jaime, Michelle, Micheal and Joshua Dykstra and three great grandchildren Clayton, Mio and Collin Dykstra. Mrs. Dykstra is also survived by other relatives and many friends.

Mrs. Alice Mae 'Jo' Hunt
Mrs. Alice Mae 'Jo' Hunt, age 75, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Sunday, October 2, 2005. Born in Heber Springs on November 18, 1929, she was the daughter of the late Walter O. and Mary Jane (Jenkins) Wallace.
A lifetime resident of Heber Springs, Mrs. Hunt was active in the community. She was employed as a bookkeeper, and she served as mayor of the city of Heber Springs from 1987-1990. Mrs. Hunt served as a vice-president of Arkansas National Bank, now Heber Springs State Bank. She was a member of the Eastern Star and First United Methodist Church and a former member of the Chamber of Commerce and Medley Club. Mrs. Hunt especially enjoyed her granddaughter and her great-granddaughters. She also enjoyed reading and Razorback basketball. Her husband, Sumler Vern Hunt, preceded her in death on September 30, 1971. She was also preceded in death by one sister, Ruth Shearer.
Mrs. Hunt is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jane and Dr. Jan Sharp of Heber Springs; one sister, Pat Bittle of Heber Springs; one granddaughter, Leigh Parsons, and her husband, J. D.; two great-granddaughters, Laura and Jessica Morgan, all of Heber Springs; and her niece, Carolyn Shearer of Aurora, Colorado. Mrs. Hunt is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Phyllis Ann Kirby
Phyllis Ann Kirby of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Monday, October 3, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born in Oakland, California, on June 28, 1947, she was 58 years of age. A resident of Heber Springs for most of her life, Phyllis was an employee of Beverly Health Care and an assistant manager for a Rite-Aid Pharmacy. She was a member of the Church of Christ and the Ladies Auxiliary of the V.F.W. and American Legion. Phyllis enjoyed reading. She was preceded in death by her father, George W. Harris. Survivors include her husband, Louis Vincent Kirby, Jr. of Heber Springs; one son, Phillip Wesley Harris of Hopewell; one daughter, Clara McKinney of Bellville; her mother, Erma Faye Jones of New Mexico; one brother, James Harris one sister and brother-in-law: Betty Jane and Carthel Parrott three grandchildren and four step-grandchildren. Phyllis is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Pearl Swaffar Kennedy
Pearl Swaffar Kennedy the daughter of Elbert and Oma Reedy Swaffar was born in Pearson, Arkansas on December 1, 1908 and passed away in Conway, Arkansas on November 26, 2005 at the age of 96 years. She was a lifelong resident of Pearson and Quitman in Cleburne County and her religious belief was Baptist. She was a retired salesperson for Creations a clothing store in Heber Springs. Pearl enjoyed being a wife, mother and grandmother. Her goals were to teach her family to love and enjoy life itself. She was a Baptist and instilled in her family love and knowledge of her lord and savior. Survivors include six daughters Mrs. Muirl Pierce of Drasco, Mrs. Elfreda Johnston of Sherwood, Mrs. Edyie McDonald of Pittsboro, North Carolina, Mrs. Carolyn Peeden of Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Mrs. Linda New of Quitman and Mrs. Donna Bogle of Springhill, Louisiana. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and 3 great great grandchildren. Mrs. Kennedy was preceded in death by her husband Elmer who passed away on May 20, 1976 and two daughters Wanda Sue and Audra and a great granddaughter Angie Butler.

Charles Harold Haynes
Charles Harold Haynes, age 59, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, November 22, 2005, at White County Medical Center in Searcy, Arkansas. Born in Wynne, Arkansas, on September 7, 1946, he was the son of Viva Childers Haynes and the late Charles Hubert Haynes.
A former resident of Bald Knob, Mr. Haynes was a barber and minister, and he had lived in Heber Springs since 1993. He enjoyed hunting and fishing, painting, wood working, and making crafts. Mr. Haynes’ religious faith was Pentecostal.
He is survived by his wife, Violet Haynes of Heber Springs; one son, Ronnie Haynes of Searcy; one daughter, Lynette Haynes of Hot Springs; his mother, Viva Haynes of North Little Rock; one sister, Virginia Singleton of North Little Rock; his stepdaughter, Erica Walley of Heber Springs, and five other stepchildren; and several step-grandchildren. Mr. Haynes is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Mattie Carolyn Nixon
Mattie Carolyn Nixon, age 88, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, November 19, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born in Mulberry, Arkansas, on August 10, 1917, she was the daughter of the late Noble Joseph and Mary Carolyn (Shed) Nixon.
A resident of Heber Springs for ten years, Miss Nixon was a retired receptionist for Dupont Company. She was an active member and an Elder of the Heber Springs First Presbyterian Church.
Miss Nixon is survived by one brother, Noble Joseph Nixon of Garland, Texas; and two sisters, Lou Seale Nichols of Heber Springs and Regina Richdale of Santa Fe, New Mexico. Miss Nixon is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.
Memorial services were held Sunday, Nov. 20, at 11:00 a.m. in the First Presbyterian Church. Memorials may be made to the Heber Springs First Presbyterian Church.
Earl Jerry Rice
Earl Jerry Rice, age 64, of Quitman, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Thursday, November 17, 2005. Born in Quitman on February 7, 1941, he was the son of the late K. A. "Boss" and Millie (Holliman) Rice.
A lifetime resident of Quitman, Mr. Rice was a factory employee. He enjoyed hunting and bow shooting, and he was a member of the Bow Hunters of Arkansas. Mr. Rice was a member of the Flat Rock General Baptist Church.
He is survived by his wife, Wanda (Pate) Rice of Quitman; three sons, Jesse Rice of Conway, Dewayne Skinner of Greenbrier, and Jeremiah Rice of Quitman; five daughters, Debbie West of Austin, Tracy Metzger of Conway, Donna McDaniel of Searcy, and Amy Brown and Angela Hooten, both of Greenbrier; one brother, John Rice of Conway; two sisters, Lenora Holliman of Quitman, and Joyce Woodard of North Little Rock; 15 grandchildren and 8 great-grandchildren. Mr. Rice is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Laura Jean Gandy Hansen
Laura Jean Gandy Hansen, age 43, of Conway, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Tuesday, November 15, 2005. Born in Memphis, Tennessee, on October 20, 1962, she was the daughter of Doris (Bailey) Gandy and the late Joe Gandy. Laura was a former resident of Heber Springs. She was an employee of Elder Care. Her religious belief was Baptist. Laura is survived by two sons, Trent Harris and Andrew Harris, both of Conway; her mother, Doris Gandy of Conway; one sister, Melissa Hight of Greenbrier; and one nephew, Seth Fisher of Conway. Laura is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Louis G. Laechelt
Louis G. Laechelt, III, 80, passed away Tuesday, November 15, 2005, at his home in Heber Springs. He was born in Chicago, Illinois, and retired to Heber Springs in 1986. Louis was in the Marine Corps and the Merchant Marines during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion Post #64 and the Legion Honor Guard. He was also active in the SAL JR. Shooters program. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, wood carving, and square dancing. Survivors include his wife, Angela; daughter, Nancy Allen; grandchildren, Christopher, Jessica, and Haley of Heber Springs; nephews, Brian and Barbara Jean Mann of Boise, ID, Fredric and Barbara Joyce Mann and their children, Eric, Paul, Christa, and Kenneth of Klamoth Falls, OR, other relatives and many friends.
A vigil will be held Monday, November 21, at 7:00 p.m. at St. Albert’s Catholic Church. A funeral liturgy will be held Tuesday, November 22, at 10:00 a.m. at St. Albert’s Catholic Church with Deacon Bob Morris presiding. Interment will be in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens with military honors provided by the Post 64 American Legion Honor Guard.

Frank Kenneth Barry
Frank Kenneth Barry, age 86, of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas, passed away Friday, November 11, 2005, at Indian Rock Village. Born in Gage, Oklahoma, on June 16, 1919, he was the son of the late James Roy and Vera (Bunch) Barry.
A former resident of Weslaco, Texas, Mr. Barry had been a resident of Fairfield Bay for ten years. He was a retired accountant for Thiohol Chemical in Brigham City, Utah.
Mr. Barry was a veteran of World War II, having served in the Army Air Force as a Staff Sergeant, and he was a member of the V.F.W. for fifty-five years. Among the hobbies Mr. Barry enjoyed were listening to music from the 1940s, reading, and collecting elephant figurines. His religious belief was Presbyterian. In addition to his parents,
Mr. Barry was preceded in death by two brothers, James Alvin Barry and John Roy Barry, and by one sister, Vera Bunch Barry. He is survived by his wife, Billie (Martin) Barry of Fairfield Bay; two sons, Gerald Roy Barry and Billy Frank Barry, both of Edgemont; one daughter, Judy Ann Strangfeld of Colorado; nine grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Mr. Barry is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Opal Southerland Gefon
Opal Southerland Gefon, age 89, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Wednesday, November 9, 2005. Born in Ida, Arkansas, on July 8, 1916, she was the daughter of the late James A. and Cora (Reed) Southerland.
Mrs. Gefon returned to Cleburne County in 1992 after living in Michigan. She was a homemaker, a former inspector for Ford Motor, and a former employee of the University of Michigan. She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard Gefon, on
November 9, 1995. Mrs. Gefon is survived by her nieces and nephews, as well as other relatives and her many friends.

Debra June Tate
Debra June Tate, age 49, of Marshall, Arkansas, passed away Friday, November 11, 2005, at the Quapaw Quarter Nursing Center in Little Rock. Born in Oletha, Kansas, on July 20, 1956, she was the daughter of the late David Haile and Betty (Jones) Watters.
Debra was a day care worker and a member of the Southside Baptist Church. She is survived by two sons, Steven Wargo of Sparta, Tennessee, and Jeremy Smith of Atoka, Tennessee; one sister, Brenda Pasley of Searcy; her stepfather, Loyd Watters; and one grandchild, Tre Ward. Debra is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Ray P. Roach
Ray P. Roach, age 84, of Edgemont, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Friday, November 11, 2005. Born in Hillsboro, Illinois, on December 21, 1920, he was the son of the late Cyrus Edward and Gertrude M. (George) Roach.
Mr. Roach had been a resident of Edgemont since 1971. He was a retired carpenter with the maintenance department of the University of Illinois, and he was a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Roach was a member of Holiday Hills United Methodist Church. He was preceded in death by one son, Cyrus E. Roach; his parents; three brothers; and three sisters. Mr. Roach is survived by his wife, Kathryn (Alexander) Roach of Edgemont; one son, John P. Roach of Springdale; two daughters, C. Ann Roach of Greers Ferry and Nancy Douglas of Ashville, North Carolina; and six grandchildren. Mr. Roach is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Foster Calvin Carlton
Foster Calvin Carlton was born October 25, 1912, in Prim, Arkansas, to James Edward and Manda (Prince) Carlton. He died November 5, 2005, at the Baptist Medical Center in Heber Springs. Mr. Carlton was a member of the Prim Full Gospel Holiness Church. He was a farmer/rancher and lived all of his life in the Prim area. He was a Veteran of the Navy and served with three of his brothers at the same time in World War II. Although one brother was injured, all four made it home from the war alive.
Foster’s Navy career began in April of 1944 on the U.S.S. Harshbushnell, a Merchant Marine cargo ship out of Charlestown South Carolina. The ship delivered supplies to fighting ships in enemy territory in the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, the Red and Mediterranean seas, and the Persian Gulf. Foster served as a watchman and gunner for the ship. On the morning of March 20, 1945, off the coast of Murmask, Russia, a Nazi torpedo hit the ship and four merchant seamen in the engine room were killed. The surviving crew tried to make it to shore, but the ship started breaking apart and the seamen has to be rescued by a British destroyer. After a short stay in Murmask, Russia, the crew was shipped home to the states via Scotland. Foster was sent to Deland, Florida, for thirty days of rest and relaxation then to New Orleans, Louisiana, and Chicago, Illinois to finish out his duty. He was discharged in March of 1946.

He is survived by one daughter and her husband Christine and Dallas Crabtree of Peculiar, Missouri, six sons and their wives; Randal and Francis Carlton, Harold and Maxine Carlton, Jimmy and Beverly Carlton, Bruce and Madelyn Carlton of Prim, Douglas and Janie Carlton of Heber Springs, and Dwight and Deanie Carlton of Buckner, Missouri, one sister Pearl Turney of Merced, California and one brother, Pat Carlton of Prim.
He is also survived by twenty grandchildren: Tammy Carlton, Karen Giles, Mickey Carlton, Kim Davis, Angie Holland, Russ Carlton, Shelly Baxter, Autumn Smith, Karla Clark, Robin Hill, Chuck Carlton, Shawn Crabtree, Mike Crabtree, Tonya Travers, Leon Carlton, Brandon Carlton, Scott Carlton, Brent Carlton, Nicholas Carlton, and Matthew Carlton. He is also survived by thirty-five great grandchildren, two great-great grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be November 6, from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. at the Prim Full Gospel Holiness Church in Prim. The Funeral will be Monday, November 7, at 2:00 with Bro. O.B. Carlton and Bro. Dennis Knapp officiating. Singers will be specialist from the church. Pallbearers will be Russ Carlton, Chuck Carlton, Mike Crabtree, Leon Carlton, Brent Carlton, and Matt Carlton. Honorary pallbearers will be Johnny Carlton, Y.B. Verser and Jerry Carlton. Interment will be in Everett cemetery in Prim. Arrangement by Olmstead Funeral Home.
Geoffrey David Roberson
Geoffrey David Roberson, age 34, of Searcy, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, November 3, 2005, at Pangburn, Arkansas. He was born in Little Rock, Arkansas, on September 13, 1971.A resident of Searcy for one year, Geoffrey was employed as an auto window tinter, and he was an avid hunter and fisherman. His religious belief was Methodist. Geoffrey was preceded in death by his grandparents, David and Lillian Roberson of Heber Springs. He is survived by his mother, Diane Bell, and stepfather, Larry Bell, of Pangburn; his father, David E. Roberson, Jr., and stepmother, Ava Roberson of Bryant; one son, Peyton David Roberson of Searcy, two daughters, Kristen Danielle Roberson of Bryant and Kalei Laine Roberson of Searcy; four brothers, Ronnie Jameson Bud Roberson of North Little Rock, Matt Roberson of Little Rock, and Shawn Hardin and Brian Hardin, both of Bryant; his grandparents, Jack and Ollie B. Reaper of Albion; his soul mate, Khara Delacruz, and his nieces and nephews who loved him very much. Geoffrey is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, November 6, at 4:00 p.m. in the Olmstead Chapel. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
