John L. Waller, 91, of Quitman, AR, one of the sweetest angels ever on this earth, passed away at Heber Springs, AR, on April 18, 2006. Born at Yantis, Texas, on April 20, 1914 to Homer and Essie Waller, John moved to Pangburn with his family when he was a young boy. His grandfather traded their farm in Texas for a farm in the beautiful Arkansas hill country. It was there he spent many happy childhood days alongside his beloved grandfather, David Waller, who essentially molded John's life and provided direction that would guide him throughout life. One of John's favorite memories was the visual lesson that Grandpa David taught him - that it was wrong to carve on a tree because it made the tree "cry."
John married
the "pretty girl in the red dress, " Mildred Purdy, on November 1, 1936, at Cornerstone, AR. He managed the General Mercantile Store at Richardson until 1941 when he began serving his country, first as a civilian participant in the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge, TN, followed by active military service in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Carolinas and overseas duty in China.
After the war, John returned to Arkansas where he and Millie raised a family in Pine Bluff. He worked for Niagra Chemical at the U.S. Arsenal and also at Ben Pearson's in Pine Bluff. In the late 1950's, he began his own business, Waller Radio and TV Sales and Service on West 6th Street. He was known throughout Pine Bluff by his slogan, "Don't Holler, Call Waller."
In 1976, John sold his business and retired to the place he had grown up, his beloved hill country in North Central Arkansas. He and Millie built their retirement home on Pryor Mountain where they lived a happy and quiet country life among their animals and many special friends. It was a favorite place for family members to gather, with the ambiance of tall pine trees, beautiful flowers, a fishing pond, home grown fruits and vegetables, and always good home cooked country meals. Their home place at 325 Waller Road (named after John and Millie) remains a beautiful sight where their presence is obvious in any direction you look.
John was a member of the Palestine Baptist Church where he gained many friends and enjoyed church activities, especially the fellowship among its members.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Homer and Essie Waller, brother Homer C. (Tip) Waller, sisters Lula Fay Steele, Lois Gomez, Frances Cagle and her twin Franklin Waller.
He is survived by his wife of 69 years, Mildred, three daughters, Bobbie O'Brien of Kerrville, TX, Johnisue Conger of Richardson, TX, and Jenny Sartain of Quitman, AR; six grandchildren, Jeri Joachim and Alana Poole of Chandler, AZ, Robert Conger of Plano, TX, David Conger of San Marcus, TX, Brian Sartain of Tulsa, OK, and Caroline Sartain of Memphis, TN. He has four great-grandchildren - Lindsay and Matthew Poole, Tara Lindsey and Julia Conger. John's surviving sisters are Rozella Simpson of Kilgore, TX, Mary Giles of Montgomery, AL, Flora Ratcliff of Quitman, AR, Jeanne Holt of Pangburn, AR, and nieces and nephews from coast to coast who affectionately refer to him as "Uncle Johnny."
The world is a better place because of John Waller's presence and many contributions during his 91 years in Texas and Arkansas. He will be remembered by family, friends and loved ones for many years. TEN - FOUR.
