Rev. J. C. Verser, age 83, of Greers Ferry, passed away May 24, 2006 at his home. He was born March 15, 1923 in Shiloh, Arkansas, to the late John and Lue (Carlton) Verser. He was united in marriage to Irma Dean (Parrott) Verser on November 15, 1941. He was drafted into the U.S. Army during World War II, serving from Jan. 8, 1943 to Dec. 23, 1945. He served as a cook in the Pacific Theater and was awarded the Good Conduct Medal.
He worked in the timber industry until the time of his death. He was ordained a deacon at Shiloh Baptist Church on June 16, 1963. He was later ordained to preach by the Little Red River Baptist Association on Oct. 30, 1966, at Brownsville Baptist Church. He pastored numerous area churches over the years.
He was preceded in death by his father, John, and mother, Lue; a son, Ricky; a daughter, Vera Ann; three brothers, Doc Verser, Alton Verser, and Clayton Verser; four sisters, Eva Brady, Pearl Birdsong, Mary Birdsong, and Opal Birdsong.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Irma Dean; two daughters, Sheila Smith and husband Preston of Rose Bud and Sharon Fife and husband Junior of Greers Ferry; a son, Randy and wife Vickie of Greers Ferry; ten grandchildren, Sandra Jones of Springdale, Ritchie Smith and wife Autumn of Drasco, Cindy Finch and husband Chuck of Greers Ferry, Kari Murphree and husband Ernie of Greers Ferry, Jason Verser of Greers Ferry, Toby Fife and wife Jennifer of Greers Ferry, Bo Smith and wife Danielle of Rose Bud, John Verser of Jonesboro, Jim Verser and wife Diandra of Lubbock, Texas, and Blake Verser of Greers Ferry; seven great grandchildren, Kaleb Verser, Austin Murphree, Kaylynn Finch, Kortnee Finch and Tanner Fife, all of Greers Ferry, and Lariette Smith and Brander Smith of Rose Bud; one sister, Lula Mae Cook and husband Ted of Russellville; one brother, Theo Verser and wife Irene of Rogers; and other relatives.
Visitation will be held May 25 at 6:00 p.m. at the West Side Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on May 26 at West Side Baptist Church with

Patsy Darlean Hopkins
Patsy Darlean Hopkins, the daughter of Sammy and Della Smith Akins was born In Heber Springs on August 22, 1943 and passed away at her home in Wilburn on May 20, 2006 at the age of 62 years. Patsy was a homemaker and had worked for the Wilburn and Heber Springs School Systems. She enjoyed her grandchildren and was a member of the Friendship Community Church. She is survived by her husband Jerry Hopkins of Wilburn, a son J. T. Hopkins of Wilburn and a daughter Kathy Neighbors of Wilburn, a brother James Atkins of Brownsville and a sister Maxine Bailey of Heber Springs, two grandchildren Tasha Jo Hopkins and Audi Wayne Neighbors both of Wilburn besides other relatives and many friends.

Lorie Ann Maples Vandon
Lorie Ann Maples Vandon, age 42, of Ida, Arkansas, passed away at home on Friday, May 19, 2006. Born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on January 26, 1964, she was the daughter of Bill Maples and Lulu Belle (Miller) Maples.
Lorie had been a lifetime resident of Cleburne County and was a nurse’s aid for Lakeland Lodge. She enjoyed taking care of her mother and was a member of the Pleasant Ridge Union Church at Ida.
Lorie is survived by two sons, Joseph Vandon and Brandon Vandon and his wife, Danielle, all of Heber Springs; her father Bill Maples of Washington, Illinois; her mother, Lulu Belle Maples of Ida; two brothers, David Maples and his wife, Beckey, and Todd Maples, all of Ida; two sisters, Christa Boring and her husband Jeoff and Kim Baker and her husband Jeff, both of Washington, Illinois, one grandchild, Coral; her many nieces and nephews, aunts and uncles, other relatives and her many friends.
Visitation will be held Sunday, May 21, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Howard H. Allen
Howard H. Allen, age 78 of Drasco died Saturday. The son of Emmett and Bertha Killion Allen he was a deacon and teacher at Drasco General Baptist Church for 54 years. He was a wonderful husband and loved his children. Mr. Allen was an educator for 42 years and taught and was a principal in the Drasco and Kansas City School Districts.
Mr. Allen was preceded in death by his parents Emmett and Bertha Allen, two brothers Dean Allen of Calico Rock and Kenn Allen of Drasco and a sister-in-law Mary Lou wife of Kenn.
Survivors are his wife of 52 years Alice Jane Allen of Drasco, a son Carl Michael Allen and wife Kelly of Madison, Alabama, two daughters Vickie Allen of Nashville, TN and Marsha Bowden and husband Scott of Mt. View, MO. Two brothers Artist Allen and wife Pansy and Junior Allen and wife Peggy both of Indianapolis, IN, a sister-in-law Linda Allen of Calico Rock, AR, 2 brother-in-law Ollie Davis and wife Diane of Heber Springs, and J. D. Davis and wife LaNell of Benton, 2 sister-in-law Mary Lynn Lincoln and husband Harold of Little Rock and Leota Flippin of Cabot. Six grandchildren Abigail Allen, Alicia Bowden, Andrew Allen, Anna Bowden, Ashley Allen and Amy Allen besides other relatives and many friends. Edgar Lane Walker
Edgar Lane Walker, age 85, of Hopewell, Arkansas, passed away at home on Friday, July 21, 2006. Born in Roxie, Mississippi, on January 17, 1921, he was the son of the late John Houston and Francis May (McGehee) Walker. A resident of Hopewell for two years, Mr. Walker was a former resident of Natchez, Mississippi, and he was a mill operator for Johns Manville Corporation for forty-two years. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was the recipient of the Purple Heart and Bronze Star. Mr. Walker enjoyed gardening, flowers, and raising his granddaughter. He was a member of Roxie Baptist Church in Roxie, Mississippi. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by five brothers, Phillip Eugene Walker, John Houston Walker, Jr., George Clifton Walker, Marion Ray Walker, and his twin brother, Edward Cane Walker, and two sisters, Laura Elizabeth McMillian and Robbie Louise Hammack. Survivors include his wife, Frances (Woodyard) Walker of Hopewell; one daughter, Ann Noland Keller and her husband, Dan, of Hopewell; two sisters, Ruby Walker Smith of Tupelo, Mississippi, and Geneva Walker Murray of Brookhaven, Mississippi; and one granddaughter, Sarah Kathryn Keller of Hopewell. Mr. Walker is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Edsel Clinton Langley, the son of Clarence and Lula Burkett Langley was Born in White County, AR on July 25, 1925 and passed away in Little Rock AR on may 12, 2006 at the age of 80 years. Mr. Langley retired to Heber Springs and Greers Ferry Lake in 1976. He was a retired manufactures representative in the clothing industry in the states of Arkansas, Mississipi and Louisiana.He and his family resided in Monroe, Louisiana during this time. A veteran of World War II in the United States Air Force he was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Heber Springs, a member of the Heber Springs Rotary Club and a Paul Harris Fellow. He was a past member of the Heber Springs City Council and a 20 year member of the Heber Springs Planning and Zoning Commission. Mr. Langley was preceded in death by his parents, a brother Jay T. Langley and a sister Wilma Smith both of Searcy, Arkansas. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Betty Hall Langley, a son Ed. C. Langley and wife Irene of Short Hills, NJ, a daughter Teresa McKeithen and husband Jim of Corey, LA., a brother Elton Langley of Heber Springs and a sister Laverne Sowell of Searcy. Five grandsons Japheth McKeithen of Corey. LA, Duncan McKeithen of Alexandria, LA, Brendan McKeithen of Wilmington, NC, Patrick Langley of Short hills, NJ, and Michael Langley of Short Hills, NJ, two Granddaughters Domini Cooper and husband Dave of Toleto, OH and Karen Langley of Short Hills, NJ, one great granddaughter Zoe Cooper of Toleto, OH.

Dennis E. Hulse, Sr.
Dennis E. Hulse, Sr., passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2006, in El Paso, TX. He was born on March 10, 1915, in Heber Springs, AR. His parents Bert and Hester (Dial) Hulse farmed cotton and raised two sons, Dennis and the late Joe Hulse. The farm is now under Greers Ferry Lake, formed by damming the Little Red River. Dennis never wanted to be a farmer, but went into teaching instead. He married
his high school sweetheart, Mary Joe Holland, graduated from the University of Arkansas, and taught with Mary Joe in a one room school, Valley Special, near Miller, AR. He served in the Army in WWII and taught navigation to Army Air Corps crews. He became a career officer in the Air Force, retiring as a Lt. Col. in 1965. Dennis was stationed in Childress, TX, Rantoul, IL, Anchorage, AK, Omaha, NB, St. Louis, MO, Wichita Falls, TX, Guam, Mariana Is., and Fort Worth, TX. His son Dennis Jr. and his wife Judy live in Pensacola Beach, FL. His granddaughter Andrea and her husband Jason Elledge have two children, Hudson and Ivy, and live in Fairfax, VT. His daughter Linda and son-in-law Dave Novlan live in El Paso, TX. Their son Thomas is a student at the University of Texas in Austin. Dennis was a meteorologist and worked at White Sands Missile Range, retiring in 1976. He was athletic as a child and young man, playing high school basketball and on the local baseball team. He played softball and bowling while in the military and golf in his later years. Dennis enjoyed gardening, walking, and fixing things around the house. He told great stories about fishing, hunting, model Ts, cutting railroad ties, and tornadoes. He and Mary Joe were long-time members of Skyline Baptist Church. Mary Joe taught their grandson Tom Novlan to play the piano. Dennis taught Tom to play the guitar and to love golf. Mary Joe, his wife or 65 years, died in August 2003. He is survived by seven nephews. Bill and Philip Love. Joe Stephen, Gary, and Chris Hulse of Washington, and James and Joseph Hipp of Arkansas, and their families. He is also survived by two sisters-in-law, Marketa (Holland) Sherlock and Ruth Holland of Arkansas.

James Clark (Pete) Johnson
James Clark (Pete) Johnson, age 88, passed away peacefully at his home in Channelview, Texas on Monday, May 1, 2006 from a long courageous battle with cancer.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 58 years, Ruth Johnson, his daughter, Kathleen Johnson, his son Frederick Johnson, and other family members.
Born April 2, 1918 in Heber Springs, Arkansas to Clara and William Johnson, James grew up in a family of 3 boys and 1 girl. JC was a man of many talents: he worked on drilling rigs, he helped build a courthouse in Louisiana, and worked for General Motors Locomotive Division commissioning new locomotives. JC retired in 1983 from USI Chemicals in Deer Park, Texas. In later years, he was very active in his automobile club, serving as president, board member, and various other roles. The technical meetings, demonstrations, and discussions were his favorites.
He served in the US Air Force as a Master Sergeant and was awarded 5 bronze stars, was a 32 degree Master Mason, a 50 year member of Sugar Loaf Lodge Masonic #414 AF&AM in Heber Springs, Arkansas, a 50 year member of Heber Springs Chapter #440, Order of the Eastern Star, a 50 year member of both the Arabia Shrine Temple and Scottish Rite Bodies, and was a life member of East Houston Masonic Lodge #1299 AF&AM.
Graveside services will be held May 11, 2006 at 2 p.m. at Heber Springs cemetery. Arrangements by Olmstead Funeral Home.
Arlena Lois Poole
Arlena Lois Poole, age 67, of Greers Ferry, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, May 3, 2006, at Southridge Village Nursing Center in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Born in Brownsville, Arkansas, on December 28, 1938, she was the daughter of the late William R. and Mary G. (Cothren) Chance. A lifetime resident of Cleburne County, Mrs. Poole was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening. Her religious belief was Baptist. She is survived by one daughter, Donna Douglas of Largo, Florida; one son, Doug Myers of Brownsville; two sisters, Beatrice Smith of Heber Springs and Virda Cox of Hot Springs; and three grandchildren, Tasha Godush, Amanda Myers, and Alex Myers. Mrs. Douglas is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Lula Helen Southerland
Lula Helen Southerland, age 83, of Ida, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, April 30, 2006, at Beverly HealthCare in Heber Springs. Born in Ida on April 24, 1923, she was the daughter of the late Tom and Ella (Davidson) Altom.
A lifetime resident of Cleburne County, Mrs. Southerland was a mother and homemaker who loved her family. She was also a farmer and enjoyed raising chickens and working on the farm. Mrs. Southerland enjoyed spending time quilting, gardening and growing flowers, and playing bingo. She attended the Pleasant Ridge Union Church. Her husband, Cecil Woodrow Southerland, preceded her in death on December 16, 2003. Mrs. Southerland was also preceded in death by two daughters, Geraldine Rothwell and Cathaleen Liles, and one sister, Marie Billington.
Survivors include two sons, Dale Southerland and James Southerland and his wife, Evelyn; two daughters, Maxine Byrd and her husband, Guy, and Emogene Barnes and her husband, Kenneth, all of Ida; fifteen grandchildren, and twelve great-grandchildren. Mrs. Southerland is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Opal Creager
Opal Creager, the daughter of Charles A. and Syltha Baker Payne was born in Morganton, Arkansas on July 13, 1917 and passed away in Heber Springs, Arkansas on April 28, 2006 at the age of 89 years. Mrs. Creager was an apartment manager for 14 years, and a member of the Church of God. She was preceded in death by her parents and husband Donald Creager, 5 brothers and 1 sister. Survivors are sister in law Jewell Payne of Heber Springs and a cousin Alvin Payne of Bee Branch, Sister Pauline Payne of Kansas City, Kansas and sister in law Elsie Malesko of Dayton, Ohio.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 2, in the Olmstead Chapel by Rev. Bill Izard and Rev. Jimmy Tilghman at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in Colony cemetery near Morganton by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. of Heber Springs.
Walter David Watson, Sr.
Walter David Watson, Sr., the son of Walter Doud and Daisy May Watson was born in Sallis, Mississippi on April 16, 1931 and passed away in Searcy, Arkansas on April 29, 2006 at the age of 75 years. Mr. Watson was a cartographer for the United States Air Force and enjoyed restoring antique vehicles. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force having served for 26 years and retiring as a CMSGT. Survivors are his companion of 20 years Diane Haga of Tumbling Shoals, a son Walter David Watson Jr. of LaPlatte, Nebraska, two daughters Deb Williams and husband Major General Robert Williams U. S. Army, of Ft. Knox, Kentucky and Patti Davis of LaVisty, Nebraska, and nine grandchildren.

Evelyn June Dickey
Evelyn June Dickey, age 79, passed away Saturday, April 29, 2006 at her home. Mrs. Dickey was born June 19, 1926 to George and Leona Kuykendall McKinley. She had been a resident of Higden for 29 years having lived prior in Little Rock. She was a housewife and member of the West Side Baptist Church where she was active in the Golden Circle Quilting Club. She had been a member of the Rosedale Baptist Church in Little Rock. She enjoyed quilting, gardening her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Harvey Dickey who passed away on December 8, 1996. She is survived by her daughters Anne Bullington of Higden, Brenda New and husband Terry of Benton, sister Pat Wiegand of Little Rock, brothers Joe McKinley and wife Christa of Velrico, Florida, George McKinley and wife Beverly of Malvern, 5 grandchildren Kim Martin Kindred, Brian Treat, Brent New, Byron New, Laura Treat, 8 great-grandchildren, numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of many friends.
Ralph Austin Luckey
Ralph Austin Luckey, age 65, of Quitman, Arkansas, passed away Saturday, March 18, 2006 at the Village Park Retirement Center in Conway, Arkansas. He was born September 18, 1940 in Gary, Indiana, and was the son of Austin Samuel and Marjorie (Murray) Luckey. He was a resident of northwest Indiana until his retirement and relocation to Arkansas. He was married
August 29, 1996 to Mary Lois Harmon. He is survived by his wife, Mary of Quitman; two sons, Sam and Christopher; one daughter, Carey (Paul) VanWormer; and two grandchildren, Aaron and Max VanWormer, all of Valparaiso, Indiana. He is also survived by four stepchildren, Kimberly Ann Parker, Tommy Wayne Armstrong, Lisa Kaye Lovin, and James Michael Dalton, and two sisters, Lynne Colleen Luckey of Flower Mound, Texas, and Judith Marie (Dewayne) Gilbert of Portage, Indiana; a host of relatives, friends, cousins, other nieces, nephews, and great nieces and great nephews.

Marianne L. Lefaver
Marianne L. Lefaver, age 82, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Wednesday, April 26, 2006, at Southridge Village Nursing Center in Heber Springs. She was born in Chicago, Illinois, on August 29, 1923.
A former resident of Chicago, Mrs. Lefaver moved to Heber Springs in 1972. She was a homemaker and had worked at Roberts Pharmacy. Mrs. Lefaver was a member of Hope Lutheran Church.
She is survived by her husband, William A. (Bill) Lefaver of Heber Springs; three daughters, Susan Bittle and Christine Scott, both of Heber Springs, and Patricia Bowdish of Princeton, Illinois; ten grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Lefaver is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Cloy Reuben Chastain
Cloy Reuben Chastain, age 91, of Tumbling Shoals, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, June 22, 2006, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Heber Springs. Born in Tumbling Shoals on November 30, 1914, he was the son of the late Frances Marion and Zora Elizabeth (Logan) Chastain.
A resident of Tumbling Shoals for most of his life, Mr. Chastain was a painter, carpenter, and farmer. He enjoyed gardening and nature, farming, and being outside. Mr. Chastain was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Heber Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Marie (Black) Chastain of Tumbling Shoals; one daughter, Evelyn Chastain Gathright and her husband, Shelly Lamar Gathright, of Heber Springs; one granddaughter, Ann Mishelle Higgins and her husband, James Warren Higgins, of Maumelle; and three great-grandchildren, Shelby Higgins, Sarah Higgins, and Laura Higgins, all of Maumelle. Mr. Chastain is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Clifton George Kolb
Clifton George Kolb, age 88, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Wednesday, June 21, 2006. Born in Rock Falls, Illinois, on September 16, 1917, he was the son of the late Clifford and Elizabeth (Folkers) Kolb.
A former resident of Dixon, Illinois, Mr. Kolb was retired from the Illinois State Police and was also a retired steel worker. He was a veteran of the U.S. Marines and was a member of the Saxton-Willis Post 64 of the American Legion. Mr. Kolb had been a resident of Heber Springs for twenty-one years and enjoyed birds and wild turkeys, working in his yard, carpentry and building. His religious belief was Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Mildred C. (Eller) Kolb of Heber Springs; two stepsons, Albert Monte Seloover of Weatherford, Texas, and Jack Lee Seloover and his wife, Ruth, of Erie, Colorado; one sister, Mrs. Delores Bell of Rock Falls, Illinois; three grandchildren, Marlo Shiers, Deanne Hennig and her husband, Erik, and Chad Seloover and his wife, Lori; and five great-grandchildren, Nathan Shiers, Trenton Shiers, Miranda Seloover, Kagen Hennig, and Jared Hennig. Mr. Kolb is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, June 24, at Cleburne County Memorial Gardens at 11:00 a.m. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
Violet Viola (Cates) Webb
Violet Viola (Cates) Webb, of Fairbanks, Alaska, passed away in a hospital in Anchorage, Alaska, on June 18, 2006 at the age of71. She was born at Ben, Arkansas, on March 23, 1935, and she was the daughter of the late John and Sarah (Richardson) Cates. She was married
to Osee Lee Webb of Mt. View, Arkansas, on April 8, 1960.
Mrs. Webb worked in a furniture factory in Michigan. She loved to garden and crochet and do craft work. She loved reading her Bible and was a member of Brownsville Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was an infant child; her husband, Osee Lee Webb; also her father and mother; one sister, Lillian Engelman of Illinois; and two brothers, Lewis Cates of Quitman and Glenn Cates of Tumbling Shoals.
She is survived by one son, Rick Webb and his wife, Sabrina, of Fairbanks, Alaska; two brothers, Marvin Cates and wife, Doris, of Rose Bud and Leon Cates and wife, Lola, of Russellville; two sisters, Lucy Reeves of Greers Ferry and Alma Lancaster of Heber Springs; three grandsons of Fairbanks, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews. Mrs. Webb is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 22, at 2:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 23, at 10:00 a.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. Terry Mote officiating. Interment will follow in the Heber Springs cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Leon Cates, David Cates, Darrell Cates, Scotty Cates, Larry Scarbrough, and Kelly Lancaster. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
Evelyn Irene (Hopkins) Rowlett
Evelyn Irene (Hopkins) Rowlett, age 66, of Fresno, California, entered into rest on Tuesday, June 13, 2006. Born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on March 30, 1940, she was the daughter of the late C. E. and Ruby (Wright) Hopkins.
She was a retired worker for the state of California and was a resident of that state for forty-five years. Mrs. Rowlett was a Baptist. She enjoyed sewing, cooking, doll making, and doll collecting.
She is survived by six brothers, Lawrence Hopkins of Drasco, Jerry Hopkins of Wilburn, Jimmy Hopkins of Ash Flat, Bobby and Charles Hopkins of Heber Springs, and Darrell Hopkins of Quitman; her aunt, Jewel Smith of Albuquerque, New Mexico; several nieces and nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 22, at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Friday, June 23, at 6:00 p.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Pastor Odell Altom officiating. Interment will follow in the Heber Springs cemetery. Arrangements are by Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc.
