Reverend William M. "Bro. Bill" Womack
Reverend William M. "Bro. Bill" Womack died Sunday, December 26, 2004, at 5 a.m., at the Baptist Medical Center-Heber Springs. His three children and daughter-in law were at his bedside. He was born January 29, 1912 to Kit Carson and Nancy Gamble Womack, the third of six children who survived childhood. He was preceeded in death by his parents, 3 sisters, 1 brother, and his wife of nearly of70 years, Altha Linderman Womack. He is survived by his sons William R. "Bill" Womack and Opal of Tumbling Shoals, and Willard A. Womack of St. Louis, MO., and daughter, Vestal A. Hipp, of Lebanon, Ohio, 8 grandchildren, and 12 great-grandchildren, and a brother, Carlton Womack of Searcy.
Bro. Bill was born on a farm in White County, and grew up on several small farms in White and Lonoke counties. He attended 1 and 2-room schoolhouses through the 8th grade. Bro. Bill preached his first sermon at a small country Baptist church just south of Beebe' on November 19, 1931. He joined the Methodist Church and became a supply preacher for small, rural circuit of churches. His first appointment was to Scotland (Van Buren County) in 1935. He pastured a circuit of five churches. Each church received 1 church service per month with the pastor. One Sunday per month, he had to preach at two churches in order to complete his monthly circuit. With a wife, 2 infants, and another child on the way, Bro. Bill did not own a car or a horse. He walked every Sunday to the church or churches where he was preaching. Some Sundays this meant a 22-mile round trip.
After missing a year due to ill health, Bro. Bill was assigned in 1937 to the Rose Bud circuit (White County). Again, he preached at a different church each Sunday. By this time, he owned a used Model-A. In 1938, he was assigned to the Deview circuit which consisted of5 churches scattered around Woodruff County. Four of the churches received a pastoral visit once a month, the fifth church only got a visit when there were five Sundays in a month.
In the summer of 1942, with inflation kicking in at the start of WWII, the combined salary of $50 per month, paid by the five churches, the economic situation of the still-young Womack family, was not tenable. Bro. Bill resigned his ministry and rented a three-room house in Rose City (North Little Rock), and took employment first, as a city bus driver and subsequently as a truck driver and salesman for Junge's Biscuit Company. Two years later, while keeping his daytime job, he accepted an appointment to pastor the Cato and Bethel churches in northern Pulaski County.
In the Fall of 1946, Bro. Bill took his 8th -grade education to Hendrix College to study for the ministry. The family moved to the parsonage in Plummerville where he pastored the church while attending Hendrix College. He completed his Sophomore year in college in 1948 and began a career as a full-time Methodist minister. In October of
1948, he was assigned to the Perry and Perryville churches with the parsonage in Perry. In 1950 the Methodist church changed its annual conference from October to June, and in June 1950 the Womack family moved to Fisher Street Methodist Church in Jonesboro; in June 1953 to the Methodist Church in McCrory; in 1956 to Tuckerman; in 1960 to Van Buren; in 1961 to Pocahontas; in 1965.fto Mt. Home; and in 1971 to the First United Methodist Church in Heber Springs. In June 1975, Bro. Bill retired from full-time ministry. He immediately accepted a. part-time pastorate at Holiday Hills United Methodist Church in Greers Ferry. while continuing to live in Heber Springs. After 5 years, he retired from his ministry at Holiday Hills UMC and accepted an appointment as Associate Pastor at the First United Methodist Church in Heber Springs. After a couple of years, he retired completely. from active ministry and was named Pastor Emeritus of the Heber Springs Church. He attended the Heber Springs Church faithfully until his death.
Bro. Bill was greatly loved and respected by his family and by hundreds of friends allover Arkansas. He will be sorely missed by his family, his church family, friends, and indeed by the entire community of Heber Springs!
