James Andrew Ahlgren, 79, a Heber Springs, AR, resident the last 12 years and formerly of Aurora, IL, died of cancer (lymphoma) on July 5, 2005. Born August 30, 1925 in Aurora, IL, to the late Walter V. and Charlotte (Artlip) Ahlgren, he was a graduate of East Aurora High School. Mr. Ahlgren served his county in the United States Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was a radioman aboard LST’s in the Navy’s amphibious forces in the South Pacific during World War II, attaining the rank of First Class Petty Officer. He was awarded the American Area Ribbon, World War II Victory Ribbon, and Asiatic Pacific Area Ribbon. After military service, Mr. Ahlgren entered the upholstery trade before becoming a police officer for the City of Aurora, IL, in 1955. In 1961, Mr. Ahlgren left law enforcement to become Superintendent of Streets for the City of Aurora. In 1965 he was elected Aurora City Commissioner and also served as City Clerk. He was re-elected Commissioner twice, serving a total of three terms from 1965 to 1977. After leaving public office Mr. Ahlgren served as Vice President of the Aurora National Bank and as Chairman of the Kane County Sheriff’s Merit Rating Commission. He was past president of the Aurora Kiwanis Club and Aurora Navy League. He was a member of American Legion Post 84 and the Elks Club. Mr. Ahlgren was lay leader and head usher for many years at Wesley United Methodist Church in Aurora. He was active in many local charities including the Aurora Salvation Army and Wayside Cross Rescue Mission. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Elizabeth (Bise) Ahlgren of Heber Springs; two daughters, Mary L. Avram and her husband, Dwight, of Wayne, IL, and Marcia G. Coleman of Batavia, IL; two sons, James R. Ahlgren and his wife, Catherine, of Wellesley, MA, and Robert D. Ahlgren of West Hollywood, CA. Also special loved ones, Linda Perry and Brian Maytum. Mr. Ahlgren leaves behind two sisters, Jean McCabe and Charlotte Millen of Aurora and a brother, Eugene Louis Ahlgren of LaQuinta, CA. (He was preceded in death by a brother, Walter Ahlgren of Aurora and two sisters, Betty Lou Grabow of Montgomery, IL, and Jewel Winokur of Detroit, MI.) He is survived by six grandchildren, Tara Laden, David Avram, Eric Ahlgren, Michael Martin, Sara Martin, and John Ahlgren, and one great-grandchild, Ayden James Martin, and numerous nieces and nephews.
Visitation will begin Thursday, July 7, at 2:00 p.m. with the family present from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Funeral services will be held Friday, July 8, at 2:00 p.m. in the Olmstead Chapel with Rev. John Miles and Rev. Charlie Cates officiating. Interment will follow in Cleburne County Memorial Gardens. Robert Lee Dill
Robert Lee Dill the son of William Levi and Susie Higgs Dill was born in Heber Springs on February 14, 1952 and passed away on July 2, 2005 at the age of 53 years. He was a native stone mason and veteran of the United States Army. He was a lifetime resident of Heber Springs and a member of the VFW and he enjoyed hunting, fishing and gardening. He is survived by his son John Dill of Wilburn and daughter Susie Andertonof Quitman, a step daughter Crystal Martinez. Three brothers Claude Dill, Dale Dill andCleon Dill all of Wilburn. Two sisters Bernice Goforth of Wilburn and Floy Dean Baugus of Missouri. Five grandchildren Ellexis Anderton, Ethan Dill, Caitlyn Anderton, Dayton Johnston and Kaylee Johnston. Mr. Dill is also survived by other relatives and many friends. Visitation will be Sunday afternoon with family present from 6:00 until 8:00 PM and Monday with family from 6:00 until 8:00 PM. Maxwell B. Mercer, age 76 passed away Saturday. He was a retired farmer, member of Friendship Freewill Baptist Church, Deaf Senior Citizens Club of Arkansas, North Central Arkansas Association for the Deaf, Arkansas Baptist Conference for the Deaf, trustee for Arkansas Association for the Deaf, National Association for the Deaf, Arkansas Deaf and Hearing Impaired Telecommunications Service and Arkansas Deaf Sports Hall of Fame member. Survivors are: wife Mabel Mercer, mother Elsie Mercer, three sons: Ricky, Keith and Danny all of Rose Bud, eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Mary Kathryn Carlson Smith, daughter of the late dr. George C. Carlson and Christine Wooley Carlson, passed away Friday, July 1, 2005. Born January 16, 1941 at Greenwood, Mississippi, she was 64 years of age. Kathryn graduated with honors from Batesville (MS) High School, in 1959. 1959-1960 she attended Belhaven College in Jackson, MS. 1960-1962 she attended Rhodes College in Memphis, TN. In 1962 she married
Edward H. Smith who passed away September 18, 2004. In 1963 she graduated from the University of Texas at Austin, TX. From 1964-1968 she served as a missionary to Mexico. From 1968-1992 besides being a homemaker, she worked as a teacher, office manager at St. Francis House of Little Rock, and was a probation officer for the state of Tennessee. In 1992 she retired with her husband to Heber Springs, AR. Kathryn was very involved in her Community wherever she lived. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church of Heber Springs, AR. She is survived by her son and Daughter-in-law, Shelby Edward and Sherry Smith of Conway, AR. Her daughter and son-in-law, Karyn and Charlie Verhegghe of St. Joe, AR. Brothers and their wives, George C. and Jane Carlson of Batesville, MS. and James C. and Dawn Carlson of Sebastian, Florida. 4 grandchildren, Megan, Susan, Dallas and Brooklyn other relatives and many friends.

William "Bill" L. Lester
William "Bill" L. Lester of Ida, Arkansas, passed away in his home on Tuesday, August 23, 2005, at the age of 62. Born on December 16, 1942 at Blytheville, Arkansas, he was the son of the late William and Azzelle (McGee) Lester. Bill was a U.S. Army veteran, a fifteen year employee of the Glove Corporation of Heber Springs, and retired from the U.S. Department of Interior, Fish, and Wildlife Service. He moved to Cleburne County in 1972 where he has continued to be a resident. Bill was a member of several organizations including the Greers Ferry Muzzle Loading Association, Mid-American Rendezvous Association, National Rifle Association, National Muzzle Loading Rifle Association, and Wilburn Creek Hunting Club. He was a Christian. His parents; one daughter, Lorrie Ann Lester; two sisters, Frances Ashby of Houston, MO, and T-Nell Samac of Eureka Springs, AR; and one brother, Jim Lester of Eureka Springs, AR, preceded him in death. He is survived by his wife, Dale (Wetzel) Lester of Ida; one son, William T. Lester and wife, Barbara, of Heber Springs; two daughters, Kathy Phillips and husband, Carlin, and Jennifer Lester, all of Ida; five grandchildren, Nichole and Levi Lester of Heber Springs, and Ethan, Joe, and Katelynn Summers of Ida; three sisters, Bonnie Smith of Mt. Grove, MO, and Katy Merriman and Pat Stow of Berryville; one brother, Sam Lester of Quitman, and lifelong friend, Jim Koop of St. Louis, MO; Bill is also survived by many other relatives and friends.

Earl Cliftion Lang
Earl Cliftion Lang, age 83, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Sunday, August 21, 2005, at Central Arkansas Hospital in Searcy, Arkansas. Born in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma, on June 2, 1922, he was the son of the late William Heber 'Bill' and Lula Annie (Baxter) Lang.
Mr. Lang worked laying gas lines and doing construction work. He had also worked for the M & A Railroad and operated a pole yard for Nebraska Bridge Post and Pole Company in Clinton, Arkansas. A resident of Heber Springs for most his life, Mr. Lang retired from Heber Springs Wholesale Grocery, where he was employed for thirty-three years, retiring as warehouse foreman. He enjoyed working with his hands, gardening, telling stories, hunting, fishing, and animals. Mr. Lang was loved by his family and friends. His religious belief was Baptist. He was preceded in death by his parents, five brothers, and four sisters.
Mr. Lang is survived by his wife, Polly Ann (Smith) Lang of Heber Springs; one son, Cliftion E. Lang of Heber Springs; two daughters, Earlene Hankins and her husband, Bill, of Quitman, and Carolyn LaFleur and her husband, Dallas, of Heber Springs; four sisters, Violet Grissom of Sweet Home, Oregon, Ina Ray of Urbana, Missouri, Costella Carr of Heber Springs, and Louise Newman of Winston, California; and his nieces, nephews, and cousins. Mr. Lang is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.

Lawanda K. Smith the daughter of William Kirby and Eva Laura (Peck) Easterwood was born in Clay County, Arkansas near Corning on August 29, 1934 and passed away in Little Rock, Arkansas on August 20, 2005 at the age of 70 Years.Mrs. Smith was the retired owner with her husband William Mack Smith of White River Cycle and Sports Center. Her religious belief was Baptist and she was a member of the Heber Springs Humane Society where she volunteered in the thrift shop and other projects. She enjoyed cooking, fishing, boating, horticulture and crocheting.She was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and a granddaughter Nicole Sullens. Survivors are her husband William Mack Smith of Pangburn, daughters, Janet Mathews of Heber Springs and Jackie Sullens and husband Louie of Ulm, Arkansas, Carolyn Scott and husband Danny of Arlington, Tennessee and Debbie Long of Puducah, Kentucky. One son Chuck Hocking and wife Bernice of Heber Springs. Three sisters Wilma Crafton Carruth of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Mae Davis of Piggott, Arkansas and Florene Blankenship and husband Jim of Pollard, Arkansas. Mrs. Smith is also survived by 9 Grandchildren and 15 Great Grandchildren besides other relatives and many friends.

Rev. Tommy Ardist Lowery, Sr., age 76, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away Thursday, August 18, 2005, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock, Arkansas. Born in Potts Camp, Mississippi, on February 14, 1929, he was the son of the late Bernie Allen and Ada Pearl (Manning) Lowery. A resident of Arkansas for most of his life, Rev. Lowery had lived in Heber Springs since 1973. He was a retired minister and was also a custodian for the Heber Springs School System for many years. Rev. Lowery was a dedicated husband and father, and he enjoyed playing music for the Lord. He was a member of Liberty Holiness Tabernacle of Vilonia. He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Edward and T. E. Lowery; and one sister, Willie Quinn. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Billie Madeline (Linn) Lowery of Heber Springs; one son, Tommy A. Lowery, Jr. and his wife, Carolyn, of Thayer, Missouri; two daughters, Linda Charre Lowery of Heber Springs and Janie Lowery Chatham and her husband, Charles III, of Oxford, Alabama, one brother, B. G. Lowery of Fayetteville, North Carolina; four sisters, Lois Ramsey and Bernice Jackson, both of Tillatoba, Mississippi; Estelle Crawford of Festus, Missouri, and Ann Snavely of Montrose, Co. grandchildren, Charles Chatham, IV, Benjamin Chatham, and Savannah Chatham; and his nieces and nephews. B. L. "Bozy" Johnston
B. L. "Bozy" Johnston died on Thursday, August 18, 2005 in Heber Springs. Bozy was born at Tyler, AR, on September 16, 1922, to L. M. and Vivian Lenore(Morris) Johnston. He graduated as Valedictorian of the Pangburn High School Class of 1939 and attended Harding College in Searcy, AR. Soon after, he married
the former Lynda Walker and they headed off to Waco, Texas, for Army Air Corps flight training. He served as a B-24 pilot and wing leader in WWII, based in Norwich, England. Bozy mustered out of the Corps at the end of the War with the rank of Captain. During his time of service he was awarded the Air Medal with 5 Oak Leaf Clusters and the Distinguished Flying Cross. Bozy worked for Fell Vaughan as a heavy equipment hauler before the war, and went back to work for him as a construction superintendent after the war. They eventually formed Coark Construction Company and operated it for several years. Bozy left that partnership to move to Heber Springs in 1960 to start his own contracting business. He formed Rock Products, Inc., in 1963, and over the next 20 years grew it into one of the best small highway construction companies in Arkansas. While making a home for his family in Heber Springs, Bozy was an active member of the First United Methodist Church, where he served on many committees. He was the longtime chairman of the Heber Springs Water and Sewer Commission, and oversaw many improvements to the system as Heber Springs grew and prospered. He was on the Board of Directors of the then Cleburne County Hospital when it was built in 1967. Bozy was appointed to the first State Building Services Council which oversaw the construction of State office buildings, and was also appointed to the Contractors Licensing Board, where he served the State of Arkansas for many years. He was also active in the Arkansas Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America. He enjoyed being involved in politics as a friend and facilitator, and was very proud of his friendships with many of Arkansas’ political leaders. As an unapologetic "Yellow Dog" democrat, he was also pleased to get the opportunity to visit the White House and spend the night in the Lincoln bedroom while Bill Clinton was President. He is preceded in death by his parents, Lemuel Marion and Vivian Lenore Johnston; wife and mother to his children Lynda Walker Johnston; sisters Lorraine Johnston Henderson, Lucille Johnston Hays, Velma Johnston Henderson; brothers Morris Johnston, Raymond Johnston, Richard Johnston, and Howard Johnston. He is survived by his wife, Louise Privitt Johnston; daughter Carol (Jim) St. Clair, son Bill (Diane) Johnston, grandsons Benjamin (Shannon) Johnston and Matthew Johnston; great-grandson Hayes Johnston; many other relatives and dear friends.
Visitation will be held Saturday, August 20, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home in Heber Springs. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, August 21, at the First United Methodist Church, 11th and Pine Streets, Heber Springs, with Rev. John Miles officiating. Dorothy M. Cothren
Dorothy M. Cothren, age 99, of Heber Springs, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 17, 2005. Born in Stark, Arkansas, on July 23, 1906, she was the daughter of the late John Bowd and Mollie (Null) Stark. Mrs. Cothren was a homemaker and mother. For most of her life, she was a resident of Cleburne County, having lived for a few years in Oklahoma. She enjoyed gardening, flowers, the outdoors, and reading. Mrs. Cothren was a member of the Post Oak Baptist Church. Her husband, Ebb Cothren, preceded her in death on March 3, 1969. Also preceding her in death were her parents; two infant sons and her son, Walton (Buddy) Cothren; one brother, Porter Stark; four sisters, Kate Foley, Johnnie Todd, Della Grimes, and Mayme Cothren, other half-brothers and half-sisters. She is survived by her daughter-in-law, Athalee Cothren of Greers Ferry; two sons, Goldman Cothren and his wife, Betty, of Rogue River, Oregon, and Howard (Gly) Cothren and his wife, Freeda, of Heber Springs; two daughters, Connie Lynn and her husband, J. C., and Shelby Morton and her husband, Paul Dean, all of Higden; fourteen grandchildren, thirty-four great-grandchildren, and seventeen great-great-grandchildren.

Linda Kaye (Stark) Dunn Hutto, age 55, of Greers Ferry, Arkansas, passed away at her home on Wednesday, August 17, 2005. Born in Heber Springs, Arkansas, on January 28, 1950, she was the daughter of J. W. Stark and the late Mary Alice "Tookie" (Walters) Stark. A lifetime resident of Greers Ferry, Linda was employed a housekeeper. She enjoyed fishing, gardening, and flowers. Linda was a member of the Lone Star Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Bobby Dunn; her mother, Tookie Stark; and two sisters, Glenda and Katherine. Survivors include her husband, Walter Hutto of Greers Ferry; one son, Terry Dunn of Sunny Slope; one daughter, Tonya Allison of Hot Springs; her father, J. W. Stark of Sunny Slope; one brother, Jerry Stark of Heber Springs; and one granddaughter, Alyssa. Linda is also survived by other relatives and her many friends.

Virl L. Moore, age 91, of Wilburn, Arkansas, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2005, at the White County Medical Center in Searcy, Arkansas. Born at Tyler, Arkansas, on
March 2, 1914, he was the son of the late Eugene and Veta (Barker) Moore.A lifetime resident of Tyler and Wilburn, Mr. Moore was a rancher and cattleman. He was a past president of the Tyler and Wilburn School Board. Mr. Moore enjoyed gardening and cattle, and he was a member of Arkansas Soil Conservation Service. He helped build and found the Community Church at Wilburn which he attended. Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his first wife, Olive Foust Moore; one son, Jerrel Moore; one brother, Dorr Moore; and one grandson, Craig Higgs. He is survived by his wife: Gail (Ferguson) Moore of Wilburn; one son, Larry Moore of Searcy; four daughters, Virlene McLelland of Atlanta, Georgia, Veta Taylor, Cheryl Ann Higgs, and Linda Hayes, all of Wilburn; two stepsons, Brian Krizinski of Michigan, and Eric Krizinski of Dallas, Texas; a daughter-in-law, Joy Etta Ferguson of Carlisle; eleven grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Vernon Leon Barnes
Vernon Leon Barnes, age 67, of Rose Bud, Arkansas, passed away at his home on Sunday, August 14, 2005. Born in Aboca, New York, on January 17, 1938, he was the son of the late Leon A. and Anise (Jackson) Barnes. Vernon was a retired factory mechanic. He and his wife, Barbara, had been residents of the Hopewell community for five years where he enjoyed farming. His religious belief was Methodist. Vernon was preceded in death by one son, Vernon Lee Barnes, and by his parents. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Jean (Poole) Barnes of Rose Bud; two sons, Joseph Harold Barnes of Virginia, and David Shane Barnes of Little Rock; one daughter, Lynnette Nabors of Rose Bud; two brothers, two sisters, and nine grandchildren. Vernon is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, August 16, 2005, from 7:00-9:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. Graveside services and interment will be held Wednesday, August 17, at 10:00 a.m. at South Cross Roads cemetery with Rev. Kenneth Rolland, Jr. officiating. Memorials may be made to Hospice. Lois "Joe" Gallaway
Lois "Joe" Gallaway, age 77, of Prim, Arkansas, passed away Monday, August 15, 2005, at Beverly Health Care in Heber Springs, Arkansas. Born in Prim, Arkansas, on May 24, 1928, he was the son of the late C. C. "Lum" Gallaway and Uva (Tyler) Gallaway. Mr. Gallaway was a carpenter. A former resident of Missouri, he was a resident of Prim for most of his life. Mr. Gallaway’s hobbies included woodworking and making flag cases, and he also enjoyed bird watching and fishing. His religious belief was Assembly of God. Mr. Gallaway was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, and four sisters. He is survived by two daughters, Annette Turman of Conway, and Libby Gallaway of Prim; one brother, Don Gallaway of Prim; eight grandchildren, Angela Baker, Dana Shows, Trisha Gallaway, Katie Gallaway, Lisa Hamilton, Jessica Subh, Tricia Turman, and Cheney Turman; and seven great-grandchildren. Mr. Gallaway is also survived by other relatives and his many friends.
Visitation will be held Tuesday, Aug. 16, from 12:00-9:00 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home, Inc. and Wednesday, Aug. 17, beginning at 4:00 p.m. at Woodrow Baptist Church. Funeral services will be held Thurday, Aug. 18, at 10:00 a.m. in the Everett cemetery Building with Rev. Homer Branscum and Rev. Huey Knapp officiating. Interment will follow in the Everett cemetery. Pallbearers will be his nephews: Faron Gallaway, Eldon Gallaway, Marvin Harris, Gary Gallaway, Donnie Gallaway, and John Henniger. Honorary pallbearers will be L. D.
