Billy Joe Freeman
Billy Joe Freeman, 70, of Prescott died Monday, February 16, 2001, at his home.
Mr. Freeman was born August 5, 1930, in Naples, Texas. He was a deacon of First Baptist Church of Prescott and a resident of Prescott for 37 years.
After 35 years of service, he retired from General Telephone Company in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Prior to moving to Prescott, Mr. Freeman served on the volunteer Fire Department in Augusta, and was a member of the Augusta Jaycees. Bill was the first official 8-mm reel cameraman for the Prescott Curley Wolves football team dating from 1967 to 1974.
Survivors include his loving wife of 49 years, Maxine Richey Freeman; two daughters, Vicki Marlar and her husband Ricky, and Melinda (Booie) Williams all of Prescott; three grandchildren, Tonda and Jim Pennington of Willisville; Tori and Teddy Rocole of Magnolia, and Tamara Marlar of Magnolia; one great granddaughter, Kathryne Rocole of Magnolia; and two great grandsons, Joe Don Rocole of Magnolia and Bryer Pennington of Willisville; two brothers, Wilburn Freeman of Harlington, Texas, and Jack and Lil Freeman of Dekalb, Texas; two sisters, Dolly Gray of Omaha, Texas, and Betty and Larry Richey of Hurst, Texas; three chosen daughters, Peggy Smart of Piggott, Katie Eldridge of Little Rock and Susanne Chambless of Prescott; one special son, Tom Futch of Houston, Texas, and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be today, Wednesday, February 28, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Prescott with Tal Webb, Bill Carpenter and Jimmy Hull officiating. Interment will follow in Pleasant Ridge cemetery near Prescott by Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Prescott or to your favorite charity.
Terry Jack Walker
Terry Jack Walker, 60, of Leona, Texas, died early on Monday, February 26, 2001, at his residence following a lengthy battle with cancer.
Mr. Walker was born August 18, 1940, in Bluff City to Lawrence Walker and Mattie Mae Carter Walker. He graduated from high school in Prescott. He served almost four years in the U.S. Air Force and was honorably discharged. He worked for Southland Corporation for about 13 years. He then became an independent owner of his own convenience stores for about 20 years in Galveston County, Texas, after which he retired and became a cattle rancher. Mr. Walker was preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence Walker and Mattie Mae Walker, and by two brothers, Glen Walker and Lyndale Walker.
Survivors include his wife, Norma Jean Walker of Leona, Texas; two sons, Mark Kevin Walker of Sante Fe, Texas, and Keith Brandon Walker of Leona, Texas; two daughters, Teresa Delaine Lane of Sante Fe, Texas, and Tracie Renae Keeling of Leona, Texas; three brothers, Bob Walker of Gurdon; Bill Walker of Bluff City and Ted Walker of Grand Prairie, Texas; two sisters, Nell Wanda McKelvy of Bluff City and Mary Ann Walker of Camden; eleven grandchildren, James Brent Lane, Melissa Brooke Lane, Kara Brianne Lane, Derek Scott Walker, Darren Lee Walker, Kayla Nichole Walker, Krsiten Lee Walker, Meagan Delaine Walker, Brandon Keith Walker, John Dalton Keeling and Cheyenne Renae Keeling; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Funeral services will be held Friday, March 2, at 1:00 p.m. at the Bluff City Church of Christ in Bluff City with Mr. Carl L. Dougan officiating. Burial will be in Bluff City cemetery under the direction of Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott. Pallbearers will be nephews James Walker, Terry Halbert Walker, Mike Walker, Barry Walker, Ronnie McKelvy and Richard McKelvy. Alternate pallbearers will be nephews Terry Glen Walker, Brent Walker, Kevin Walker and Steven Walker.
Visitation will be held at Shackelford Funeral Home in Prescott on Thursday, March 1, from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.
Anetia Hair
Anetia Hair, 72, of Hope died Thursday, March 1, 2001, in Hope.
Mrs. Hair was born September 15, 1928, in Patmos to Joseph E. and Ola Mae Moses Hollis Sr. She was a retired cook for Hope Schools, Memorial Hospital and Sheltered Workshop. Mrs. Hair was a member of Southside Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Valgene Hair.
Survivors include a son, Charlie Hair of Hope; a daughter, Diane Dillard of Emmet; a brother, Joe Carroll Hollis of Hope; four sisters, Betra Campbell of Delight, Myrtis Blankenship of Waldo, Lorreta Nicholas of Patmos and Imo Jean Powell of Hope; four grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Saturday, March 3, in the Herndon Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Charles Jones and Rev. Dewayne Parrish officiating. Burial was in Shiloh-Lamertine cemetery under the direction of Herndon Funeral Home of Hope.
Eva Mae Hordern Holstein
Eva Mae Hordern Holstein, 63, of Saratoga died Monday, March 19, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Holstein was born December 3, 1937, in Nevada County to Freeman Foshee and Myra Marie Davis McLelland. She was self-employed with Hordern Security. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include one daughter, Ann Goff of Austin, Texas; one brother, John McLelland of Prescott; one sister, Mary McLelland of Prescott; two grandchildren, Chris Gaines of Charleston, S.C., and John Proch of LaGrange, Texas; and her caregiver, Rick Holstein of Saratoga.
Graveside services were held Friday, March 23, at Pleasant Ridge cemetery in Prescott under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Lottie G. Purifoy
Lottie G. Purifoy, 92, of Prescott died Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Hillcrest Care and Rehab in Prescott.
Mrs. Purifoy was born March 18, 1909, in Bluff City to Ewell and Agnes Hardwick Gulley. She was a housewife, mother and a Methodist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lawrence L. Purifoy, who died in 1972.
Survivors include one son, John Purifoy of Prescott; one sister, Gladys Allen of Columbia, S.C.; two grandchildren, Gail D. Hensley of Wilson and Michael L. Purifoy of Marion; two great grandchildren, William J. Clark of Conway and John Michael Bannon Purifoy of Marion.
Graveside services were held Saturday, March 24, at Chidester cemetery with Rev. Jerry Westmoreland officiating under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Annie H. McCullough
Annie H. McCullough, 81, of Mineral Springs died Wednesday, March 21, 2001.
Mrs. McCullough was born Feb. 8, 1920, near Schaal, the daughter of James A. and Nancy Williams Hooker. She was a member of Central Baptist Church in Mineral Springs. Mrs. McCullough was preceded in death by a son, Garry David McCullough in 1962; her husband, William Story McCullough in 1982; a grandson, William Christopher McCullough in 1984; and her son-in-law, Ed Clark in 1995.
Ann McCullough was a devoted mother and wife and a compassionate friend to people in need, particularly the elderly. She devoted 35 years of her life to the service of the elderly by working as a nurse's aide, principally at Colonial Nursing Home, where she cared for hundreds of patients and gave hope to their families. She enriched the lives of everyone who came in contact with her.
When not at work, or tending to others, Mrs. McCullough was an avid gardener and a wonderful cook. She believed in a strong work ethic, and instilled this in the people around her. Her love, wisdom and courage will be sadly missed by family and friends alike.
Her survivors include two daughters, Gay Clark of Prescott and Lauri Halley of Texarkana, Texas; three sons, Mike McCullough of Nashville, Nick McCullough of Texarkana, Ark., and Chris McCullough of Texarkana, Texas; one son-in-law, Tony Halley of Texarkana, Texas; three daughters-in-law, Julie McCullough of Nashville, Anita McCullough of Texarkana, Ark., and Stacy McCullough of Texarkana, Texas; five granddaughters, Nancy Swaty of Little Rock, Renee and Claire McCullough of Texarkana, Ark., and Kristen and Kelsey McCullough of Texarkana, Texas; three grandsons, Tadd McCullough of New York City, Dannon McCullough of Texarkana, Ark., and Matt McCullough of Texarkana, Texas; one grandson-in-law, Joe Swaty of Little Rock; and her great-grandson, Will Mayo of Texarkana, Ark.; two sisters, Inez Coleman and Mildred Jones; and a brother, Eugene Hooker.
Services were held Friday, March 23, at Latimer Funeral Home Chapel in Nashville with Matt Woods officiating. Burial was in Mineral Springs cemetery under the direction of Latimer Funeral Home of Nashville.
Alta Bailey
Alta Bailey, 90, of Rosston died Monday, March 26, 2001, at Pine Hope Nursing Home in Hope.
Mrs. Bailey was born November 28, 1910. She was a homemaker, a Baptist and was preceded in death by her husband, Garland Bailey, and by a son, Joe Donald Bailey.
Survivors include a granddaughter and her husband, Pat and Mika Winemiller of Hope; two great grandchildren, Jarod Winemiller of Dallas, Texas, and Carl Winemiller of Hope; one sister, Ethel Kersey of San Antonio, Texas; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Wednesday, March 28, at Holley Springs cemetery at Rosston with the Rev. Scott Neathery officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps.
Maurice McLelland
Maurice McLelland, 87, of Prescott departed this life Tuesday, March 27, 2001, at Hillcrest Care and Rehab in Prescott.
Mr. McLelland was born July 31, 1913, in Nevada County to Willis J. and Lecta McNeely McLelland. He was a jeweler and watchmaker serving Prescott and southwest Arkansas for 62 years. He was a member and deacon of Central Baptist Church in Prescott since 1937, where he served as song director, teacher and other places in the church for many years. He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and Masonic Lodge of Prescott. He was awarded the 1998 Treasure of Gold plaque by the Prescott-Nevada County Chamber of Commerce. He received U.S. Navy training in San Diego in 1945. He served in the foresters CC Camps in Utah when Franklin Roosevelt was President. He was preceded in death by one son, a brother and his parents.
Cherishing his memory are his wife for over 62 years, Dorothy McLelland; his son, Jerald McLelland of Prescott; his granddaughter and her husband, Charlene and Grant Clark of Hope; a brother, Harold McLelland of Little Rock; seven sisters, Yvonne Thompson of Baton Rouge, La., Opal Barber of Greensboro, N.C., Betsy Bliss of Idyllwild, Calif., Joyce Martin of California, and Virginia Barksdale, Kathryn Church and Polly Grifford of Huntsville, Ala.
Funeral services were held Thursday, March 29, at Central Baptist Church in Prescott. Burial was in DeAnn cemetery in Prescott under the direction of Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott.
Hettie Louise Saffold
Hettie Louise Saffold, 72, of Benton passed away Wednesday, March 28, 2001.
Mrs. Saffold was born January 27, 1929, in Blevins. She was a retired L.P.T.N at Benton Service Center. She was a member of Temple Baptist Church on Highway 67 at Benton. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Saffold of Benton; a daughter, Janice Heard of Benton; a sister, Adell Campbell of Prescott; two grandchildren, Christie and Cheryl Heard; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, March 30, at Ashby Funeral Home Chapel in Benton with Bro. Oscar Golden officiating. Burial was in New Rosemont cemetery under the direction of Ashby Funeral Home of Benton.
Frank Ferris King
Frank Ferris King, 87, of Hope passed away at his home on Thursday, April 12, 2001.
Mr. King was born May 23, 1913, in Prescott to John Ellis and Lena Vune Ferris King, who preceded him in death. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Hope for fifty years. During those years he served as a deacon, men's Sunday school class teacher and superintendent of the adult Sunday school department for 29 years. Mr. King was the last charter member of the Hope Lions Club, where he served as the third president and held many other offices in the club over the years. While in business, he was a member of the Hope Chamber of Commerce and served as president in 1956, the year the first prize was awarded for the largest watermelon.
Mr. King graduated from Prescott High School and Magnolia A&M; (now SAU) before serving in the Civilian Conservation Corps for two years. He enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1942 and served his country as an instructor in diesel mechanics and later served on the ship USS Randall in the Pacific. On returning home he, along with others, founded a woodworking plant that later was known as Southwest Wood Products. Step ladders, extension ladders and screen doors were manufactured at this plant for 39 years. Ladders were shipped by truck and rail to 45 states. Mr. King was also affiliated with Gunter Bros. Lumber Company of Ashdown and Wilton.
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Dora Gunter King of Hope; one son, John Alfred King of Hope; two daughters, Dora Ann and her husband, Don Purdy of Nashville, Tenn., and Peggy Lucille and her husband, Danny Bobbitt of San Antonio, Texas; six grandchildren, Alan Purdy and wife Christi, Susan Purdy, Lena King Ross and husband Shane, Christopher King, Amanda Beth Bobbitt and Emily Jane Bobbitt; one step granddaughter, Sara Rhodes; and three great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, April 14, at First Bapitst Church in Hope with Rev. Wade Hood and Rev. Earl Cumbie officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens cemetery in Hope under the direction of Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home of Hope.

Jimmy Wayne Marlar
Jimmy Wayne Marlar, 47, of Emmet, died Monday, April 9, 2001 at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
Mr. Marlar was born January 13, 1954, in Prescott to Rufus and Pauline White Marlar. He was disabled. Mr. Marlar was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by his mother.
Survivors include his wife, Kay McAteer Marlar of Emmet; three daughters, Michelle Robbins and Ashley Hurt of Emmet and Rhonda Marlar of Andrews, S. C.; his father, Rufus Marlar of Emmet; two brothers, Bobby Marlar of Prescott and Gary Marlar of Texarkana; one sister, Nedra Hopkins of Texarkana; and five grandchildren, Justin, Jennifer and Jordan Robbins, Danielle Marlar and Heather Hurt.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 11, at Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott with Rev. James Adams officiating. Burial was in Pisgah cemetery in Laneburg under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Mattie Scott
Mattie Scott, 88, of Prescott passed away Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
Mrs. Scott was the widow of Rev. H. H. Scott. She was born Mattie Ruth Williams on April 13, 1913, in Blevins. As a young child she became a member of Elizabeth A.M.E. Church, which later consolidated with Green Hill A.M.E. Church of Prescott.
On April 16, 1932, she was united in holy wedlock to Rev. H. H. Scott. She served by her husband's side in the West Arkansas Conference of the African Methodist Episcopal Church on the Magnolia, Gurdon and Hot Springs Districts. She was children's Sunday School teacher, church pianist and choir member, youth counselor and, as she grew older, an advisor to young ministers' wives. She was always ready with her "Amen" to the gospel wherever it was preached.
Mrs. Scott became a member of St. Paul A.M.E. Church in Arkadelphia after Rev. Scott superannuated as an itinerate pastor. She remained a faithful member with her title and advice.
She leaves to cherish her life a loving daughter and son-in-law, Kathryn and Sam Wiley of Prescott; four grandchildren, Marcus (Aundria), Cameron, Samantha and Brandon Wiley of Prescott; one great grandson, Marty Wiley of Prescott; a special sister-in-law, Una Mae Harris of Little Rock; and several nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were held at St. Paul AME Church in Arkadelphia Tuesday, April 3, with Rev. James H. Thomas III delivering the eulogy.
