Maxine Story McGarr
Maxine Story McGarr, 79, of McNeil died Monday, April 23, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. McGarr was born March 25, 1922, to the late Parson Charles and Ruby Lillian (Bass) Story. She was a dietician at Magnolia City Hospital, a member of the First United Methodist Church of McNeil and a member of the Eastern Star for 49 years. Mrs. McGarr is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, H.E. ‘Mac' McGarr, and a grandson, Max Chad McGarr.
Survivors include a son, Eddie McGarr of Bismarck; two daughters, Shirley Hobbie of Palestine, Texas, and Linda Vansickle of Prescott; two brothers, Lawrence Story and Monroe Story both of Magnolia; two sisters, Louise McWilliams of Magnolia and Marie Pharr of Waldo; four grandchildren, John Miles Hobbie of Dallas, Texas, Seth Hobbie of Mesa, Ariz., Ruby Vansickle of Dallas, Texas, and Joe Vansickle of Prescott; and three great grandchildren, Taylor and Shane Vansickle of Prescott and Miles Caleb Hobbie of Mesa, Ariz.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, April 25, at First United Methodist Church in McNeil with Rev. Robert Wilson officiating. Burial was in Philadelphia Methodist Church cemetery.
Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church in McNeil or to Columbia County Hospice in Magnolia.
Howard Lavon Allen
Howard Lavon Allen, 80, of Benton, formerly of Prescott, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, in Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.
Mr. Allen was born April 6, 1921, in Hempstead County to Monroe William and Doris Jean Owens Allen. He was a retired painter and he was employed in maintenance with the state of Arkansas for 22 years. Mr. Allen was a Baptist. He was preceded in death by one brother, Willard Allen, and one sister, Allene Allen.
Survivors include his wife, Maxine K. Allen of Benton; two sons, Harlis Allen of Porterville, Calif., and Ross Allen of Traskwood; three brothers, Burlen Allen, Harlan Allen and Rayborn Allen all of Oklahoma; two sisters, Kathleen Allen of Monticello and Dolores Morton of Henrietta, Okla., five grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and one great grandchild.
Funeral services were held Friday, April 27, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott with Rev. Edward Kitchens officiating. Burial was in DeAnn cemetery in Prescott under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Jimmy Earl Pogue
Jimmy Earl Pogue, 76, of Royal, formerly of Prescott, died Tuesday, April 24, 2001, at St. Joseph's Regional Health Center in Hot Springs.
Mr. Pogue was born April 7, 1925, in Poyen. He was a barber, a Baptist, a World War II U.S. Navy veteran, a member of Thaddeus H. Carawy Post 2278 Veterans of Foreign Wars and a Mason.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude McRae Pogue of Royal; two sons, Donnie Pogue of Mt. Ida and Thomas Sallee of Mt. Holly, N.J.; three daughters, Cathy Pogue of Las Vegas, Nev., Miriam Fitch of Hindsville and Amy Goff of Springdale; one sister, Alene Abbott of Hot Springs; one brother, Roy Pogue of Mentone, Calif.; a nephew, Jimmy Howard Pogue of Hot Springs; 12 grandchildren; and six great grandchildren.
Graveside services were held Friday, April 27, at DeAnn cemetery in Prescott with Chaplain Matthew Goff officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Steve Inlow
Steve Inlow, 36, of Prescott died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
Mr. Inlow was born March 16, 1965, in Murfreesboro to Donald Earl and Sue Pruitt Inlow. He was a clerk at Baker's Best Stop and a full time student at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia. He was a member of Central Baptist Church in Prescott. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald Earl Inlow, who died in June 1995.
Survivors include his wife, Penny Inlow of Prescott; two daughters, Jesna and Patricia, both of Prescott; his mother, Sue Inlow of Prescott; one sister, Donna Parks of Prescott; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Thursday, May 10, at Central Baptist Church in Prescott with Rev. Chad Brandon and Rev. Jim Whaley officiating. Burial was in DeAnn cemetery in Prescott under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Judy J. Mitchell Shackelford
Judy J. Mitchell Shackelford of Prescott died Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
Mrs. Shackelford was born in Prescott to Hatley and Cleo McCain Mitchell. She was a retired funeral director and former owner of Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott and a member of the First Baptist Church of Prescott.
Survivors include her husband, Henry Shackelford of Prescott; one daughter, Lynne May 14, 2001 Shackelford Bernhard of Baton Rouge, La.; one brother, Jewel Riley of Alexandria, La.; and two grandchildren, Brandon and Mitchell Bernhard of Baton Rouge, La.
Funeral services were Saturday, May 12, at First Baptist Church in Prescott with Rev. Jerry Westmoreland and Rev. Milton Cowling officiating. Burial was in DeAnn cemetery under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.

Gerry Sue Gibson
Gerry Sue Gibson, 44, of Rosston died Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Gibson was born February 27, 1957, in Freer, Texas. She was a member of the Willisville Church of Christ and a fifth grade teacher for Nevada Schools in Rosston. she was preceded in death by her father, Paul T. House.
Survivors include her husband, James Gibson of Rosston; two daughters, Tamberly Bryant and her husband, \ John of Bodcaw and Erica Gibson of Rosston; one granddaughter, Sydney Bryant of Bodcaw; one sister, Sherry Burns and her husband Loyce Wayne of Willisville; one brother, Alvin House and his wife Lynn of Waterloo; her mother, Bonnie House of Rosston; her grandmother, Velma Jarvis; her nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 11, at Willisville Church of Christ with Cris May officiating. Burial was in Liberty cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Magnolia.
Rosa Lee Baker
Rosa Lee Baker, 74, of Magnolia died Wednesday, May 9, 2001, at Meadowbrook Lodge Nursing Home in Magnolia.
Mrs. Baker was born May 19, 1926, in Patmos to Frank and Velma Dodson. She was a retired lunch room employee for Magnolia School District, a member of Central Baptist Church in Magnolia and former Sunday school teacher. Mrs. Baker was preceded in death by her parents and her husband, Tilman Baker.
Survivors include two sons, Larry Baker and his wife Bonnie of Prescott and Jerry Lynn Baker and his wife Mary of Waldo; a daughter, Lois Jean Hagins of Magnolia; six grandchildren, Julie Glass and her husband Steven of Prescott, Jason Baker and his wife Heather, Jennifer Hagins and Jessica Hagins, all of Magnolia, and Jeremy Baker and Kimberly Baker, both of Waldo; one great grandson, Clay Baker of Longview, Texas; and two step-sisters, Jane Williams and Rosalie Willis, both of Magnolia.
Funeral services were held Friday, May 11, with Bro. David Wood officiating at Central Baptist Church in Magnolia. Burial was in Memorial Park cemetery in Magnolia under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home of Magnolia.
James T. 'Jim' Berry
James T. ‘Jim' Berry, 56, of Minneapolis, Minn., passed away Tuesday, May 1, 2001.
Mr. Berry was born August 20, 1944. He began a career in radio broadcasting at age 19 when KTPA radio started in Prescott. He later attended Bible college in Walnut Ridge and Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia.
Survivors include his mother, Evelyn Berry; his wife, Edith; sisters, Oneta and Demetria; brothers, Harold, Leon, Bryan, Dana and Keithel; three sons, Mike of Little Rock, Randy (Sharon) of Old Washington and Lennart of Minneapolis; a daughter, Brenda (Bobby) Hickey of Emmet; and grandchildren, Alyssa, Joseph, Justin, Nicholas, Heather, Randy and Maranda.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 7, at Washburn-McReavy Swanson Chapel in Minneapolis with Father Joe Gilespie officiating.
Lucille Flemons Williams
Lucille Flemons Williams, 69, of Gurdon died Monday, May 7, 2001, at her home.
Mrs. Williams was born November 14, 1931, in Nevada County to Leonard and Fannie Mae McDaniels Flemons. She was a retired inspection supervisor with the Riveria Hotel and a former certified child care provider. She was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor Kemp in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Survivors include her sister, Lois Christopher of Gurdon; an aunt, Emme Hopson of Prescott; an uncle, Roy Flemon of California; three nieces, Bonnie Cooper and Teresa Muldrow of Gurdon and Michele Christopher of Camden; a nephew, Tim Christopher of Gardena, Calif.; and six great nieces and three great nephews and a host of cousins, friends and God-children.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 14, at Mt. Caney Baptist Church in Gurdon with Johnny Harris officiating. Burial was in Sweet Home cemetery near Prescott under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Reece Lynton Pledger
Reece Lynton Pledger, 91, of Little Rock died Friday, May 4, 2001.
He was born in Holly Springs, the youngest of six children born to Mae and Oscar Pledger. He played on the undefeated state championship Fordyce Redbugs football team along with such teammates as Paul ‘Bear' Bryant and ‘Ike' Murray. He graduated from Henderson College in Arkadelphia, where he wrote for the college newspaper. He worked for Commercial Credit Corp. his entire business career, where he retired in 1974 as vice president. He was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Wilda Reasons Pledger of El Dorado. Their retirement years were spent in Little Rock. They were members of Pulaski Heights Methodist Church in Little Rock.
Survivors include his only daughter, Lynn Cortney Pledger-Wilson and her husband Stuart and their three children, Miranda, India and Liam Reece Wilson, all of London, England; one sister, Ethel Pledger of Prescott; a nephew, Thomas Goodgame of Little Rock; a niece, Shirley Rowley of Dallas, Texas; and a number of cousins and devoted friends, especially Linda Patterson and James and Lewis May, all of Little Rock. All will remember him fondly as a great father, a good friend and an honest man.
Graveside services were held in El Dorado Tuesday, May 8, in Woodlawn cemetery with Rev. Jeff Rainwater officiating under the direction of Young's Funeral Home of El Dorado.
Douglas Franklin Freeman
Douglas Franklin Freeman, 57, of Texarkana, Ark., died Thursday, May 10, 2001 in a VA medical center in Shreveport, La.
Mr. Freeman was born June 24, 1943, in San Pedro, Calif. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and served during the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Fleet Reserve and was a member of First Lutheran Church in Texarkana.
Survivors include his wife, Judy Freeman of Texarkana; two sons, Douglas F. Freeman Jr. and Scott Freeman of Little Rock; three step-sons, Scott Carmony of Kansas City, Mo., and Dr. Neil Carmony and Dr. Brent Carmony of Texarkana, Texas; two step-daughters, Denise Rowe of Texarkana, Texas, and Melinda Brooks of Nashville, Tenn.; one brother, James Freeman of Texarkana; one grandchild; and 11 step-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, May 14, at First Lutheran Church in Texarkana, Texas, with Rev. Richard Cody officiating. Graveside services were to be held Tuesday, May 15, at 11:00 a.m. in the National cemetery in Little Rock under the direction of Texarkana Funeral Home of Texarkana, Texas.

Retha Briggs Stanley
Retha Briggs Stanley, 57, of Booneville died Monday, April 30, 2001, in a Fort Smith hospital.
Mrs. Stanely was born April 6, 1944, in Winthrop. She was a homemaker and a member of Avery Chapel Methodist Church in McCaskill. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fredrick Stanley.
Survivors include one son, John Forrest of Wickes; two daughters, Roberta Perez of Paris and Brandy Stanley of Van Buren; four step-daughters; one step-son; six sisters, Ann Tinkes of Lockesburg, Kay Canada of Booneville, Peggy Haney of Nashville, Thelma Harberson of Dierks and Nina Ward and Hildred Gray of Wickes; two grandchildren; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Graveside services were held Friday in Avery Chapel cemetery in McCaskill under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
