Jean Biddle
Jean Biddle of Prescott died Saturday, September 6, 2003.
Ms. Biddle was a homemaker, member of First United Methodist Church in Prescott and a 50-year member of Hope Chapter 328 Order of Easter Star.
Survivors include: brother, Bobby Malone of El Paso, Tex.; sister, Faye Nelson of McAlester, Okla.; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, September 9, 2003, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church with interment in Missionary Grove cemetery by Shackelford Funeral Home in Prescott.
Pauline Hairston
Pauline Benton Hairston of Houston, Tex., passed away September 11.
She was born in Nevada County on October 28, 1915.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Leslie Hairston, one sister, Mary Sporer and four brothers, John, Bill, Buster and Brooks.
She is survived by three sisters, Virginia Broyles, Linda Riley of Houston and Emily Benton of Prescott; two brothers, Lowell Benton of Houston and Davis Benton of Cale.
Funeral services were Monday, September 15, in Houston.
Helen Daniels
Mrs. Helen Ghormely Daniels, 81, of Prescott, died Sunday, September 14, 2003, at Christus St. Michael Health System, Texarkana, Texas.
She was born July 27, 1922, in Laneburg, Nevada County to Joe and Era Stokes Ghormley.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Rosston. She was Valdictorian of Class of 1940 in Laneburg Central High School in Laneburg. She was active in church, civic, and community activities.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Elder James Chester Daniels; one son, John Edward Daniels; one brother, Paul Ghormley; one sister, Josie Ghormley and one grandson, Mark Daniels.
Her survivors include: one son, Dr. Jim "Bud" Daniels and Jan of Seneca, S. Carolina; three daughters, Jan Webb and Lindell of Bossier City, La., Judy O'Keefe and Tommy of Rosston and Jeanette Goudeau and Randy of Rosston; one daughter-in-law, Sharon Daniels of Texarkana, Ark.; one brother, Bill Ghormley of Prescott; eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Wednesday, September 17, 2003, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott, with Rev. Jim Cross officiating. Burial followed in Union cemetery in Bodcaw. Arrangements by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
Family received friends Tuesday, September 16, 2003, from 6-8 p.m. at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
William Monk
William Lee Monk, 63, of Pasadena, Tex., passed away Sunday, September 14, 2003.
He was born January 1, 1940, in Prescott to Harvey and Jessie (Billingsley) Monk.
He worked for Brown and Root as a pipe welder for 34 years, where he made many lifetime friends.
He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Sue Griffin Monk, born in Hope; two sisters, Ora Mae McKamie and husband, Otis, of Hope and Elsie Faye Wells and husband, Gene, of El Dorado; three sons, William Thomas (Bill) Monk and wife, Mitzi, Scott Alan Monk, and George Gregory (Greg) Monk; six grandchildren, Ashleigh, Shelby, Haley, Kelsey, Kylie, and Kolby; and his beloved dog, Aggie.
William enjoyed hard work, liked his cows, and dearly loved his grandchildren.

Mary Spires
Mrs. Mary Estelle Burkett Spires, 90, of Prescott, died Thursday, September 25, 2003, at Hillcrest Care and Rehab in Prescott.
She was born September 7, 1913, in Caney, to Robert Wayne and Nora Velma Carter Burkett.
She was a member of the Central Baptist Church of Prescott.
She was preceded in death by two husbands, Albert H. Cummings, Sr. and George Leo Spires; one brother and two sisters.
Her survivors include: two sons, Albert Howard Cummings of Prescott and Robert Garland Cummings of Houston, Texas; and seven grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Saturday, September 27, 2003, at Central Baptist Church in Prescott, with Rev. Chad Brandon and Rev. Jeremy Franklin officiating. Burial followed at Caney cemetery in Caney. Arrangements by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.

Mattie Larsen
Mattie Faye Larsen, 95, of Hope formerly of Columbia County, died Sunday, September 28, 2003, at Heather Manor Nursing Home in Hope.
She was born May 4, 1908, in Emerson to the late Isaac Newton and Sarah Daisy Paschal McCollum.
She was retired director of Social Services of Columbia County. She was a member of Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Emerson and attended First Presbyterian Church in Prescott.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Ray P. Larsen; three brothers, Elisha McCollum, Dr. John McCollum, and Charlie McCollum; two sisters, Vera Chisholm and Izora Wilson.
Survivors include: three brothers, Carl McCollum of Kilgore, Tex., Joe McCollum of Twin Falls, Idaho, Ben McCollum of Ketchum, Idaho; two sisters, Jennie Beecham of Edmond, Okla., and Ida Purtle of Prescott; and a host of nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services were Wednesday, October 1, 2003, at 10 a.m. at Lewis Chapel Charles Purtle officiated. Burial followed in Hephzibah cemetery. Visitation was at Lewis Funeral Home Tuesday, September 30 from 6-9 p.m. Memorials may be made to Abilities Unlimited or Southern Arkansas University.
Pallbearers were Wayne McCollum, Jimmy McCollum, Roger Beecham, Matt Beecham, James T. McCollum and Allen Chisholm.
Jimmy Hicks
Jimmy Wayne Hicks, 38, of Chidester, died Sunday, October 5, 2003 at the Ouachita Medical Center in Camden.
He was born March 17, 1965, in Lewisville.
Mr. Hicks was preceded in death by his father, Cecil Campbell.
He is survived by one son, Joshua Hicks of Hampton; one daughter, Denise Hicks of Hampton; his parents, Lonnie and Barbara Hicks of Chidester; three brothers, Billy Hicks of Spring Hill, Kelly Campbell of Lewisville, and Bobby Hicks of Nash, Tex.; five sisters, Debra Miller of Prince Fredrick, Md., Barbara Jones of Stamps, Dana Alsobrook of Chidester, Tina Lyons of Hope, and Kristi O'Dell of Waldo; his girlfriend, Cindy Lambert of Chidester; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at The Piney Grove Baptist Church in Lewisville, with the Rev. Raymond Hicks and Rev. Otis McKamie officiating with burial in the Sewell cemetery at Lewisville under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Lewisville.
Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday at Piney Grove Baptist Church in Lewisville.
Nellie Merritt
Nellie Wilson Merritt, 73, of Camden, a retired elementary teacher after 32 years in the Fairview Schools, died Wednesday.
She was a faithful member of the Trinity Missionary Baptist Church of Camden for 51 years, during which she served for 31 years as the ladies adult Sunday School teacher. Her victorious faith enabled her to remain strong through the difficult days of her illness.
She was a faithful wife for almost 52 years, a loving mother and grandmother.
Born January 18, 1930, near Waldron, she was the oldest of six children of Bea and Dortha Altstatt Wilson.
She is survived by her husband, Charles P. (Bug) Merritt; two sons, Charles Richard, Sr. and wife, Marvanna and David Lynn and wife, Sally; three grandchildren, Chuck Merritt, Staci Sewell and husband Steven, and Holli; one brother, Herman Wilson and wife, Pam, and three sisters, Retha Faye Wiley and husband, Jim, Alice Lampkin and husband, Glen Wayne, and Debbie Chandler and husband, Eddie.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister, Barbra Jean Lampkin.
Funeral services were Friday at 2 p.m. at Trinity Missionary Baptist Church in Camden, by Bro. Steven Sewell and Bro. David Johnson, with interment at Crain cemetery. Visitation was Thursday night 6-8 p.m. at Proctor Funeral Home of Camden.
Memorials may be made to Trinity Missionary Baptist Church.
Scott Smyth
Mr. B. Scott Smyth, 48, of Rosston, died Wednesday, October 8, 2003, at his home.
He was born March 7, 1955, in Hope to Joe Byron and Jean Elmore Smyth.
He was a self-employed contractor with the U.S. Government and operated his own business, One American Professional Services, Inc. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Rosston. He was a member of the V.F.W., American Legion and an Army and Marine Veteran of the Vietnam War.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by one niece, Jessica Smyth.
His survivors include: one son, Wesley Byron Smyth of Longview, Texas; two brothers, Mark Allen Smyth, Leesville, La. and Greg Smyth and Cheryl of Rosston; two sisters, Denissa Jo Smyth of Texarkana, Texas and Teresa Lee Smyth Fontenot of Ragley, La.; 10 nieces and nephews, several great nieces and great-nephews, and several other relatives.
Funeral services were 2 p.m., Saturday, October 11, 2003, at First Baptist Church in Rosston, with Rev. Mark Faulkner officiating. Burial followed in Rosston cemetery in Rosston. Arrangements by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
