Rev. Dewel Smith
Rev. Dewel Howard Smith, 71, of Heber Springs, passed away Wednesday, September 22, 2004, at St. Vincent Infirmary Medical Center in Little Rock.
Born in Heber Springs on February 17, 1933, he was the son of the late Ralph A. (Dude) and Myra E. (Balentine) Smith.
Rev. Smith had been a resident of El Dorado for 36 years and returned to Heber Springs 10 months ago. He was an Assembly of God pastor, who devoted his life to the church. Rev. Smith was a practical joker and enjoyed telling jokes. He was a member of the First Assembly of God in Heber Springs.
He is survived by his wife, Freda M. (Lorton) Smith of Heber Springs; three sons, Larry Howard Smith of Prescott, Kenneth Lee Smith of Heber Springs, and David Alton Smith of Fayetteville; one brother, Arthur (Art) Smith of Scotts Bluff, Neb.; five grandchildren, Kenneth V. Smith, Jr., Amy Renea Goshen, Benjamin Brett Smith, Dewel Alen Smith, and Charity Grace Smith, and one great-grandchild, Malachi D'Angelo; and other relatives and many friends.
Visitation was held Friday, September 24, from 6-8 p.m. at Olmstead Funeral Home. Funeral services were Saturday, September 25, at 2 p.m. in the First Assembly of God Church in Heber Springs with Rev. Robert Adam and Rev. Steve Moss officiating. Interment was in the Pearson cemetery.
Pallbearers were Willie Cook, David Lorton, Buster Carelock, Vernon Lorton, Michael Lorton, and Jerry Richardson.

Hesterly Harris
Mr. Hesterly Ray Harris, 67, born and raised in Prescott, passed away in Ripon, Calif.
He died peacefully by his family and two dogs after a short fight with cancer.
The sun rose on Hesterly, on March 22, 1937, and the sun set on Monday, September 20, 2004. He was the son of the late Will Harris and Olean Hollomon Harris. He was a graduate of Prescott High School, class of 1955. He joined the army and was stationed at the Presidio in San Francisco, Calif., where he met and married
his wife of 43 years, Patricia Morrissey. They made their home in Livermore, Calif., for 37 years then moved to Ripon, Caif., for the last two years.
Hesterly is survived by his wife, Pat Harris; one daughter, Denise Lynn and husband, Kevin Casson of Ripon; three sons, Daniel Ray and wife Tammy of Delhi, Calif., John Dallas of Livermore, and Kenneth Patrick of Pleasanton, Calif. He also had six grandchildren, Alex and Max Casson, Heather, Daniel, Leslie and Steven Harris. Hesterly also leaves behind three brothers, Billy Joe of Washington, William Carol of Alabama, Olen Dale of Arkansas and one sister, Barbara Ann of Arkansas, many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews and special friend, Joanne McKinnon. He also had two beloved dogs, Bridget and Murphy.
Hesterly retired 12 years ago from the Oakland Navel Air Station as a parts specialist in transportation. He built a cabin from the ground up in Westpoint, Calif., where he spent a lot of his free time. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and riding in his jeep.
A memorial service was set for Friday, September 24, at 11 a.m. at the Free Methodist Church, 218 West Main St., Ripon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to Hospice of San Joaquin, 3888 Pacific Ave., Stockton, Calif., 95204.
Ruth Jones
Mrs. Ruth Cox Jones, 92, of Emmet, died Monday, October 25, 2004, in Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.
She was born April 6, 1912, in Hempstead County, to Jack and Lucy E. Schooley Cox.
She was a homemaker and former postal clerk. She was a lifelong member of Emmet United Methodist Church, member of the United Methodist Women and Organist for more than 20 years. She was active in her community work and the extension homemakers group.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Shelby Lee Jones, who died in 1993; by one son, Dale Jones, who died in 1998; and by one daughter, June Osborn, who died in 2002.
Her survivors include: one daughter, Suzanne Davidson of Emmet; one brother, Jack Cox, Jr. of Emmet; five grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Saturday, October 30, 2004, at Emmet United Methodist Church, with Rev. Jerry G. Westmoreland and Rev. J. R. Pete Callicott officiating. Burial followed in Memory Gardens cemetery in Hope. Arrangements by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope.

Clara Johnson
Mrs. Clara Buchanan Johnson, 87, of Prescott, died Wednesday, October 27, 2004, in Hillcrest Care and Rehab in Prescott.
She was born January 16, 1917, in Prescott to Dr. Gilbert A. and Florine Warrick Buchanan.
She was a homemaker and a retired news clerk of the former Nevada News. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Prescott, a member of their Women of the Church, and member of Benjamin Culp Chapter of DAR.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie White Johnson, who died in December 1986; by one son, Archie White Johnson, Jr.; and by one brother, Paul Buchanan.
Her survivors include: one son, Gil Johnson of Prescott; one daughter, Phoebe Parks of Richmond, Texas; one brother, Donnell Buchanan of Tulsa, Okla.; four grandchildren, Valerie Cobb, Jessica Hartley, Archie Parks, and Marie Parks; and four great-grandchildren, Andrew Cobb, Sebastian Johnson, Sara Cobb, and Labe Hardey.

Dorothy Phillips
Mrs. Dorothy Gene Nolan Phillips, 88, of Texarkana, Texas, formerly of Blevins, died Wednesday, October 27, 2004, in Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.
She was born on January 11, 1916, in Blevins, to Thomas and Georgia Aslin Nolan.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Macedonia Methodist Church in Blevins.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Marvin Brooks Phillips, who died in September of 1977.
Survivors include: two daughters, Bobbie Ogden and Tommie Abbott and Don all of Texarkana, Texas; two granddaughters, Alta Ogden of Arlington, Va. and Michelle Sanquinetti and Steve of Corinth, Texas; one great-grandson, and Benjamin Don Sanquinetti of Corinth, Texas.
Funeral services were 10 a.m. Friday, October 29, 2004, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott, with Rev. Jack Martin officiating. Burial followed in Macedonia cemetery in Blevins. Arrangements by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.

Minor Bailey
Mr. Minor H. Bailey, 89, of Rosston, formerly of Fort Worth, Texas, died Tuesday, November 30, 2004, at Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.
He was born May 21, 1915, in Rosston to Chester B. and Effie Jarvis Bailey.
He was a retired superintendent of Johns-Manville Roofing Plant, Ft. Worth. He was a Baptist and a Mason for more than 50 years.
He was preceded in death by his parents and by two brothers and two sisters.
His survivors include: his wife of 67 years, Tommie Lou Atkins Bailey of Rosston; two sons, Donnie H. Bailey of Weatherford, Texas, and Frank Bailey of Rosston; one sister, Wilma Simpson of Dallas, Texas; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were 10 a.m. Friday, December 3, 2004, at Rosston cemetery in Rosston with Rev. Arlis East officiating. Burial followed. Arrangements by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.

Billy Martin
Billy R. Martin, 57, of Prescott, passed away on December 2, 2004, at Baptist Hospital in Little Rock.
He was a member of the Church of Christ in Prescott, served in the United States Air Force receiving a Purple Heart and a Bronze Star for his service in Vietnam. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Master Sergeant in 1968.
Survivors include: his wife of 36 years, Judy McKinnon Martin; son, Donald Jeffrey Martin and wife, Mandy of Genoa; daughter, Dr. Kristi Martin Hawkins and husband, Jason of Benton; mother, Flossie Nolan Martin of Prescott; four grandchildren, Corey Alan, Jeffrey Lane, Abigael Elizabeth, and Kagan Wade Martin.
He was preceded in death by his father, Merlin C. (Billy) Martin n November of 1990.
Funeral services were Saturday at 2 p.m. in Prescott Church of Christ with Bro. Neal Ridling officiating. Interment was in Pleasant Hill cemetery under the direction of Shackelford Funeral Home.
J.D. Allen
Mr. J. D. Allen, 85, of Bodcaw, died Friday, December 3, 2004, in Heather Manor Nursing and Rehab in Hope.
He was born on September 15, 1919, in Bodcaw to John and Leona Russell Allen.
He was retired from Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. He was a member of Bodcaw #1 Bapstist Church in Bodcaw, a 50-plus year Mason and member of Whitfield Lodge #239, Eastern Star Chapter 328 of Hope, and Royal Arch #152. He was an Air Force Veteran of World War II and Korean Conflict.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Patricia Ann Wilbanks, who died August 2001; by one infant son, Anthony Jay Allen; by one brother, Ermon Allen; and by one sister, Lois Darby.
His survivors include: his wife of 65 years, Marie Mullins Allen of Bodcaw; one son, Michael Allen and Jackie of Lincoln; one son-in-law, Lynn Wilbanks of Little Rock; four grandchildren, Andy Allen of Hot Springs, Amy Burtrum of Springdale, and Jason Wilbanks and Julie Wilbanks both of Little Rock; and three great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. December 5, 2004, at Bodcaw #1 Baptist Church in Bodcaw, with Rev. Ed Phillips, Rev. Nick Flowers, and Rev. Tom Stevens officiating. Burial followed in Bodcaw #1 cemetery in Bodcaw. Arrangements by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope.

Julene Hulan
Mrs. Julene Curtis Allen, 75, of Prescott, died Sunday, December 5, 2004, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
She was born December 26, 1928, in Nevada County to John and Ethel Beaver Curtis.
She was a homemaker. She was a member of Shady Grove Baptist Church in Prescott.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Willie Hulan, who died in January of 2002.
Her survivors include: one son, Thomas "Bill" Hulan and Linda of Gurdon; one daughter, Sandy Loe and Bud of Prescott; one brother, Paul Curtis of Emerson; and three grandchildren, Shanna Loe of Prescott; Kim Hulan and Ashley Hulan, both of Gurdon.
Funeral services were 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 7, 2004, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home Chapel in Prescott with Rev. Neal Ridling and Rev. Larry Byers officiating. Burial followed in Liberty cemetery, Redland Community, Prescott. Arrangements by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
