E.J. "Bill" Gates
E.J. "Bill" Gates, 88 of Glenwood, died Wednesday, June 21, 2006.
Survivors include two sons, Bill Gates and his wife Suzy of Tyler, Texas, and John Gates of Glenwood; two daughters, Janice Ingram and her husband Jim of Jacksonville, Texas, and Jean Ross and her husband, Dean, of Kennewick, Wisc.; two sisters, Sybil Helmbeck of Sherwood, and Helen Phillips of Middleburg, Fla.; seven grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Juanita.
The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 24, at the Horne Chapel. Burial was to follow at South Fork cemetery under the direction of Horne Funeral Home.

Doyle Lucas
Doyle Edward Lucas Sr., 67, formerly from Little Rock and Redfield, passed away Monday, June 26, 2006.
He is survived by his loving wife, Jackie Gill Lucas of Prescott; three sons, Johnny Lucas of Fort Smith, Steve (Sonia) Lucas of Little Rock and Doyle Lucas Jr. of California; one daughter Cherrie (Danny) Wilson of Prescott. Other family members includes grandsons Seth and Stephen Jr. (Jasmine) Lucas, and great-grandson Mason Lucas all of Little Rock; granddaughter Katy Wilson of Prescott; sister-in-law Carolyn Cullins; nephews James Chamlee of Little Rock and Mike Chamlee of Prescott; sisters JoAnn Glahn and Barbara DeSantis and numerous other nieces and nephews, all from California.
Doyle was preceded in death by son, Andy Lucas; parents Tom and Annie Lucas; two brothers T.W. and Johnny, and sister Artie.
Doyle was retired from the United States Army and the United States Post Office. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War and proud member of the VFW, American Legion, the American Postal Workers Union, and a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Doyle was loved very much by his family and liked by all who knew him. His presence will be deeply missed.
Funeral services were Friday, June 30, at 2 p.m. in the Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel with interment in Piney Grove cemetery. Visitation was Thursday evening at the funeral home from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.
Margaret Scott
Margaret Adine Price Scott, 84, died peacefully on June 29, in San Antonio, Texas.
A long time Fort Smith resident and native, she was active in the First Christian Church, YWCA, and the Sparks Hospital Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of almost 60 years, Samuel B. (Bud) Scott Jr.
She is survived by her son, Samuel B. Scott III and his wife, Barbara; their children, Blake, Robert, and Sarah of Plainfield, Il.; her son, Weston P. Scott and his daughters, Kelley and Julia of San Antonio, and her daughter, Jane Moore, her husband Wendell and their children Kathy and John of Vienna, VA.
Graveside service was at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the U.S. National cemetery with funeral services at the First Christian Church in Fort Smith at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home.
Friends and family were received from 6-7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, July 4 at Edwards Funeral Home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or First Christian Church in Fort Smith.
Joe Hathcoat
Joe Paul Hathcoat, 34, of Benton, formerly of Monticello, died Friday, June 30, 2006. Joe was the owner and operator of AAA Signs and Graphics in Benton and a member of The Church at Rock Creek in Little Rock.
He is survived by his wife, Anita Hathcoat; three children whom he dearly loved, Channing, Kailyn and Drew Tyler; his parents, Danny and Peggy Hathcoat of Gurdon; sister and brother_in_law, Pam and Barry Dopson of West Monroe; sister and brother_in_law, Melissa and Bo Nutt of Bearden; his grandmother Birdie Hathcoat McKin of Arkadelphia; and several nieces, nephew, aunts and uncles.
Visitation will be Wednesday, July 5, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Horne Funeral Home in Gurdon. A graveside service will follow at 11:30 a.m. at Decepher Cemetary, led by Pastor Greg Kirksey.
Pallbearers will be Paul White and Jimmy Don Currey of Gurdon, Drew Merrell and J.R. Jackson of Monticello, Scott Krupicki and Andy Calhoun of Benton.
Joe was dearly loved by his family and friends and will be deeply missed.
Nona Hignight
Nona B. Hignight, 99, of Ft. Smith formerly of Prescott died Sunday.
She was the widow of H. O. Hignight, a homemaker and was a member of The Church of Hope, Arkansas.
Survivors include her son, Jimmy Hignight and wife, Erma of Ft. Smith.
Funeral services are Wednesday, July 5 at 2:00pm with visitation prior to the service, 12 noon to service time. Interment will be in the Unity
cemetery near Nashville, by Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott.
James Jernigan
James Riley Jernigan, 56, of Emmet died Saturday at his home.
James was a US Army Veteran serving during the Vietnam War.
Survivors include son, Jimmie Lee Tanner of Malvern; mother, Bonnie G. Sams of Prescott; sister, Bonnie Lee DeBoser of North Little Rock; nephew, Ralph Miller of North Little Rock; niece, Millie Vales, Scott; two grandchildren, Cody and Brett Tanner and other relatives.
He was preceded in death by son, Kevin L. Sams.
Services were at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Shackelford Funeral Home Chapel with interment in DeAnn cemetery by Shackelford Funeral Home, Prescott. Visitation was from 6-8p.m. on Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Barbara Bobo
Barbara Joyce Bobo, 50, of Hope, died Tuesday, August 1, 2006 at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
She was born March 13, 1956 in Little Rock. She was a nurse and a member of The Anderson Baptist Church at Springhill.
She was preceded in death by her father, Thomas Goodwin Jr.; a son, James Marvin Russell; and a granddaughter, Courtney Goodwin.
She is survived by her husband Mike Bobo of Hope; mother, Mary Jo Gregory of Bodcaw; son, Jason Goodwin of Springhill; step-son, Charlie Bobo of Springhill; step-daughter, Melissa Martin of Laneburg; brother, Gary Goodwin of Magnolia; four step-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 4, 2006 at Smith Funeral Home in Stamps, with Revs. Gary Goodwin and Jerry Evans officiating with burial in Union cemetery at Bodcaw, under the direction of Smith Funeral Home in Stamps.
Visitation was from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, August 3, at Smith Funeral Home in Stamps.
Donnie Lawson
Donnie Lewis Lawson, 44, a resident of DeQueen, died Wednesday, August 2, 2006 at his home.
He was born November 20, 1961 in Blevins. He was a line worker for Pilgrims Pride for 19 years.
Mr. Lawson is survived by his mother, Crystal Faye Lawson of Prescott; four brothers, Lamark Lawson and Ronald Lawson both of DeQueen, Jimmy Lawson of Little Rock and Andre Lawson of Prescott; and his grandfather, Luther Lawson of Prescott.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Sunday, August 6, 2006, in the Sand Hill cemetery, under the direction of Wilkerson Funeral Home.
Mary Andrews
Mary Ellen Elia (Snapper) Andrews was born to Charles and Lottie Birdwell Elia January 17, 1919, in Whelen Springs, Arkansas. Mrs. Andrews passed away August 4, 2006, at Baxter Medical Center, Mountain Home, Ark. She was a member of East Side Baptist Church in Mountain Home.
She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Thomas Nixon of Mountain Home, one grandson David and Mary Nixon of Minden La., one granddaughter, Theresa Weekley of Columbia, Ill., one great-grandson, three great-granddaughters, and three great-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband Alfred S. Andrews, seven siblings and one great-grandchild.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 8, at Rose Hill cemetery in Gurdon with the Rev. Charles Hargett officiating. Visitation was 7-9 p.m. Monday evening at the Horne Funeral Home.
Elven Mcbride
Elven McBride, age 78 of Gurdon, died Saturday, Aug. 5, 2006.
He was a supervisor for International Paper Co., and a member of the First Assembly of God Church in Gurdon, where he taught Sunday school and was a Sunday school superintendent and deacon of the church. He was also an officer for the United Way, president of the Central Arkansas Development Council for 3 years, a 4-H leader for 20 years, a superintendent at the Clark County Fair over the produce, and a member of the Clark County Cattlemen’s Association.
He is survived by his wife, Mary McBride of Gurdon; one son: Ronnie McBride of Gurdon, two daughters, Crystal Dyer of Texarkana and Melody Key of Farmington; one brother, Jake McBride of Gurdon; one sister: Linda Ross – Longview, Texas;
five grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren.
Funeral service will be held at 10 Wednesday, Aug. 9, at the First Assembly of God Church of Gurdon with the Revs. Kevin Jester and Jim Farris officiating. Burial will be in Bethel Springs cemetery under the direction of Horne Funeral Home of Gurdon.
Memorials may be made to Teen Challenge of Northwest Arkansas in Morrow.
Edith Powers
Mrs. Edith Stroud Powers, 81, of Hope, died Monday, August 21, 2006, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
She was born in Washington on May 31, 1925, to G.M. and Etta Powers. She was a retired waitress. She was a member of Unity Baptist Church of Hope.
She was preceded in death by her parents; by one granddaughter, Katie Swinea; by two brothers, John and Royal and Dave Stroud; and by two sisters, Othal Webb and Mary Harmon.
Her survivors include her husband of 61 years, Leland Powers of Hope; two sons, Bubba Powers and Vigi and Tee Powers all of Hope; three daughters, Sheila Halsell of Hope and Leila Pitts and Jim of Greenwood, and Judy Swinea and Jim of Imboden; nine grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Thursday, August 24, 2006, at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope, with Revs. John Mangum and Jim Swinea officiating. Burial was in Holly Grove cemetery in DeAnn. Arrangements by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope.
