Mozelle Brown
Mrs. Mozelle Cannon Brown, 88, of Ashdown, formerly of Hope, died Sunday, April 22, 2007, at Pinecrest Retirement Center in Ashdown.
She was born in Saratoga, on Feb. 9, 1919, to Manton and Eva Raley Cannon. She was a homemaker and Christian mother and grandmother. She was a member of Ashdown Church of Christ and former member of Hope Church of Christ. She was a member of Woodmen of the World.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Cowan David Brown Sr., who died Sept. 20, 1997.
Her survivors include one son, David Brown and Jackie of Prescott; one daughter, Sarah Cobb of Ashdown; two sisters-in-law, Nona Cannon of Chula Vista, Calif., and Chris Cannon of Wake Village, Texas; four granddaughters, Vicki McBay of Blevins, Lisa Madden and David of Prescott, Laura Tucker and John of Fordyce, and Katie Cobb of Searcy; eight great-grandchildren and eight great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Tuesday, April 24, at Hope Church of Christ in Hope, with Mr. John Cannon Jr. and Mr. Tommy Mounce officiating. Burial was in Memory Gardens cemetery in Hope. Arrangements by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home in Hope.

Ila Carpenter
Ila Pearl Carpenter, 96, of West Monroe, La., died April 17, 2007, at the Glenwood Hospital in West Monroe.
She was born Jan 29, 1911, in Sturgeon, Mo., to the late Rufus and Lerlie Hawkins Gordon. She was a retired elementary school teacher for Nevada Public Schools.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Silas Carpenter; one son, Harold Dwight Carpenter; three brothers, Dillard, Rozier and Bertha Gordon; and one son-in-law, Dr. Fred Bennet Jr.
Survivors include one daughter, Alice Carpenter Bennet of West Monroe, La.; one daughter-in-law, Sue Forsythe Carpenter of Camden; grandchildren, Allison Bennett of Plano, Texas, Frank Bennet and Fred Bennet, both of West Monroe, La., Evelyn Carpenter of Camden and Martin Carpenter of Magnolia; 11 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and loveable companions, Tiger and Annie.
Funeral services were Sunday, April 22, at 2 p.m. at Willisville Church of Christ with Chris May officiating. Burial followed at Willisville cemetery under the direction of Lewis Funeral Home, Inc., of Magnolia. Visitation was Sunday from 1-2 p.m. at Willisville Church of Christ.
Pallbearers were Danny Gordon, Ronnie Hicks, Charles Long, James Gibson, Kabin Stone, David Beard, James Pennington and Bobby Walthall. Honorary pallbearers were Joe Carpenter, Jack House, Jim Butler, Denver Carpenter, Gaylon Waters, Paul Bailey Jr., Dale York and male members of the Willisville Church of Christ.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hesed Ministries, P.O. Box 797483, Dallas, TX 75379. Hesed Ministries is a ministry that trains women in small business and pastors in Biblical knowledge in Uganda, East Africa.
Irene Riley
Mrs. Irene A. Riley, 95, of Prescott, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at Hillcrest Care and Rehab in Prescott.
She was born on August 6, 1911, in Prescott to Crawford and Elizabeth Garrett Andrews. She was a licensed practical nurse. She was a member of Boughton Baptist Church in Boughton.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and three sisters, Mattie Malone and Bobbie Helen LaFrance.
Her survivors include one brother, Pat Andrews of Hope; one sister, Patsy Andrews of Huffman, Texas; and several nieces, nephews and friends.
Graveside services were at 10 a.m., Saturday, April 21, at Liberty cemetery in Redland Community in Prescott, with the Rev. Jerry G. Westmoreland officiating. Burial followed.
Family received friends Friday, April 20, from 6-8 p.m. at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
Ouida Williams
Mrs. Ouida Marie Williams, 82, of Bodcaw, died Monday, April 30, 2007, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
She was born in McKinney, Texas, on Feb. 28, 1925, to Johnny Wesley and Estelle Flossie Blurton Shewbirt. She was a homemaker and mother. She was a member of Bodcaw Baptist Church in Bodcaw, and the W.M.A.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Donald Raydon Williams, who died in 1982; one daughter, Nancy Kathleen Gogan; two brothers, Johnny and Billy Shewbirt; and one sister, Betty Jean Shewbirt Johnson.
Her survivors include two sons, Don Lee Williams and Carolyn of Houston, Texas, and Damon Ray Williams and Terri of Bodcaw; one daughter, Sandra Gail Martin and Buddy of Spring Hill; one brother, Doyle Ray Shewbirt of Troup, Texas; one sister, Patricia Fraser of Bodcaw; 11 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 10 a.m., Thursday, May 3, at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home of Hope, with the Revs. Ray Boman and Jerry Evans officiating. Burial was in Union cemetery in Bodcaw. Arrangements were by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home.

Gerald Henderson
Mr. Gerald Alan 'Jerry' Henderson, 61, of Prescott since 1998, formerly of Pittsburgh, Penn., died suddenly of a heart attack Saturday, April 28, 2007.
He graduated from Baldwin High School in 1963. He graduated from Allegheny Community College, where he was named to the dean’s list, with an associate’s degree in child development. He was a retired federal government employee of 30 years; a United States Air Force Veteran of the Vietnam War; and was employed by K.B.R., working in Iraq at the time of his death. He is the son of the late Ronald and Louise Henderson of Mansfield, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Patricia Reddick, and his brother, Ronald Henderson, both of Pittsburgh, Penn.
His survivors include his wife of 38 years, Darlene Quillen Henderson of Prescott; two sons, David Henderson and Shannon of Prescott and Brian Henderson and Carla of Hot Springs; two cherished grandchildren, Tyler and Emily Henderson of Prescott; two loved step-grandchildren, Vince Marchese of England and PFC Chase Marchese of Ft. Hood, Texas; and one niece, Johanna Wierjchowski of Pittsburgh, Penn.
Funeral services were at 2 p.m., Friday, May 4, at Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott, with the Rev. Perry Johnson officiating. Burial was in the DeAnn cemetery in Prescott. Arrangements were by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.

Mattie Glenn
Mrs. Mattie Toliver Glenn, 91, of Prescott, died Wednesday, May 2, 2007, in Prescott Manor Nursing Center in Prescott.
She was born on January 11, 1916, in Hempstead County, to Ike and Emma Henagan Toliver. She was a homemaker and cook from the former Nevada County Hospital in Prescott. She was a member of Munn’s Chapel Baptist Church in Prescott and a choir member.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Wade Glenn, who died Dec. 6, 1993; and by one brother, Lewis Toliver.
Her survivors include a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m., Wednesday, May 9, at Munn’s Chapel Baptist Church in Prescott, with Dr. Cledis D. Stuart officiating. Burial will be in DeAnn cemetery in Prescott. Arrangements are by Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home in Prescott.
Melissa Smith
Mrs. Melissa Ann DeVenney Smith, 42, of Hope, died Sunday, May 6, 2007, in Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.
She was born on Nov. 8, 1964, in Hope, to George and Emily McBay DeVenney. She was a registered nurse and a Baptist.
Her survivors include her parents, George and Emily McBay DeVenney; four brothers, Jeff, Tim, Ben and Frank DeVenney, all of Hope; two sisters, Elaine Arnold of Camden and Pat Beavers of Hope; a special friend, Tim Hawthorne of Hope; six nieces and nephews; and many other relatives and friends.
Funeral services are at 2 p.m., Wednesday, May 9, at Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home Chapel in Hope, with the Rev. Albert Brown officiating. Burial will be in Memory Gardens cemetery in Hope. Arrangements are by Brazzel/Oakcrest Funeral Home of Hope.

Wayne Jarvis
Wayne Jarvis, 95, of Rosston, died Sunday, May 6, 2007, in Nashville.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Tommie Lew; one daughter, Billie Ruth Morman; four brothers, John, Lee, William 'Buddy' and Cleve Jarvis; and two sisters, Newell Wooten and Margaret Elmore.
Mr. Jarvis was a retired owner of Jarvis Grocery in Rosston and a member of Rosston Baptist Church.
He is survived by a daughter daughter, Patricia Kim of Monterey, Calif.; two brothers, Fred Jarvis of Camden and Jim Jarvis of Atlanta, Texas; three sisters, Elise Williams of Rosston, Ted Martin and Mary Lou Smith, both of Camden; seven grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were Wednesday, May 9, at 10 a.m. at Rosston Baptist Church with Bro. Mark Faulkner officiating. Burial was in Rosston cemetery. Arrangements were by Shackelford Funeral Home.
Dr. Barney Harris
Dr. Barney Harris of Gainesville, Fla., Professor Emeritus of the University of Florida Institute of Food and Agricultural Sciences, died May 7, 2007, after losing a long battle with cancer.
Dr. Harris was born Dec. 20, 1931, in Prescott. He received his bachelor of science degree from Oklahoma State University, his masters degree from LSU and his Ph.D. from Oklahoma State University. He taught two years at Southern Arkansas University in Magnolia and served two years in the Army, stationed at San Diego, Calif.
He moved to Gainesville in 1963, accepting a position at the University of Florida as Extension Dairy Nutritionist at IFAS. He was a member of numerous professional honor societies and received many prestigious awards before retiring in 1994. After retirement, he became a private consultant with several companies and continued to work with Florida’s dairy industry.
Dr. Harris was a member of Westside Baptist Church where he served as deacon, usher captain and adult Sunday school teacher. He was also a member of University City Kiwanis Club. He enjoyed vegetable gardening, bowling and was a loyal Gator fan.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, William Barney and Mary Harris and four siblings, Carter Harris, Will Harris, Ike Harris of Prescott and Mae Graham of Farmington, N.M.
He is survived by his wife of 42 years, Marylee Johnson Harris; his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Larissa Harris of Jacksonville, Fla.; his son, Alan Harris of Orlando, Fla.; daughter and son-in-law, Deborah and Kenneth Allen of Gainesville, Fla., three sister, Shelby Avery of Arkadelphia, Florence Cornelius of Prescott and Carolyn Cummings of Sheridan; and nine nieces and nephews.
A visitation will be Wednesday, May 9, from 5-7 p.m. at Milam Funeral and Cremation Services. Funeral services will be held Thursday, May 10, at 2:30 p.m. Interment was in Forest Meadows East. In lieu of flowers, contributions in Dr. Harris’ name may be made to: The American Cancer Society, 2121 SW 16th St., Gainesville, Fla. 32608 and/or the building fund of Westside Baptist Church, 10000 Newberry Road, Gainesville, Fla. 32606.
Joe and Georgiana Wesson
A few weeks after celebrating their 64th marriage anniversary, constant companions Joe Thomas and Georgiana Wesson went to be with their heavenly father.
Georgiana, 86, died May 17, 2007, and Joe, 88, died on Sunday, May 20, 2007. Both had been at the Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.
Joe was born on his family’s farm in Nevada County. Georgiana was born in Grayson County, Texas.
Theirs was an amazing love story that began one day when Joe, who worked as a lineman for Southwestern Bell in Hope, heard Georgiana’s voice over the phone and fell in love with it. She worked
as a switchboard operator for the company in Durant, Okla.
Joe took the jitney across the state line and had a mutual friend introduce him to Georgiana. They later married
in Durant.
Joe worked for the telephone company for 32 years and Georgiana worked for 34.
In an agreement with his siblings, Joe bought his family’s farm in Nevada County in the early 1960s. There, the couple raised cattle and lived lives of generosity, stewardship and conservation. Georgiana worked as a ward clerk at the hospital in Prescott and also volunteered at Prescott schools and at the Hillcrest Rehabilitation Center.
Both were active members of the Calvary Baptist Church in Hope.
The Wessons are survived by their daughter Lenna Jane and son-in-law Edward Baxter; grandchildren Keri and Adam Kinsey; great-grandchildren Stuart and Elaine Kinsey; Betty Denny, Joe’s sister of Ada, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews. They were preceded in death by grandson Stuart Baxter.
Visitation for the Wesson’s was from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
on Wednesday, May 23, at Herndon-Pharr Funeral Home in Hope. The funeral was at 2 p.m. on Thursday, May 24, at Calvary Baptist Church, with internment to follow at Memory Garden cemetery.
The family asks that in lieu of flowers, memorials be sent to Arkansas Baptist Children’s Home or Calvary Baptist Church.
