Betty Lou Hartsfield
Betty Lou Ward Hartsfield, 61, of Waterproof, La., formerly of Prescott, died Wednesday, June 9, 1999, at her home.
She was born February 10, 1938, in Prescott to Ollie L. and Fredda Phillips Ward. She was a housewife and a Methodist.
Survivors include her husband, Bobby Hartsfield of Waterproof; one son, Bobby Harrold Hartsfield of Keithville, La.; two daughters, Amanda Kay Gary of Shreveport, La., and Kimberly Pavloff of Waterproof; one sister, Ollie Fay Skinner of North Little Rock; and seven grandchildren; and three great grandchildren.
Graveside services were Saturday, June 12, at Midway cemetery in Prescott with Rev. Davis Thompson officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Edward 'Jack' Cooper
Edward 'Jack' J. Cooper, 67, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at Baton Rouge General Hospital in Baton Rouge, La.
Dr. Cooper was born in Ouachita in 1932. He was a 1950 graduate of Prescott High School. Dr. Cooper was a retired emergency room physician of 32 years, having received his medical degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock in 1961. He was a veteran of the Korean War serving in the U.S. Air Force and later in the U.S. Army Reserves. After practicing medicine in England, Ark., for six years, where he built the town's first hospital, Dr. Cooper then moved to Baton Rouge in 1967. He was the founding father of the Emergency Room Physicians Association that first served all the hospitals in the Baton Rouge area. Dr. Cooper also established emergency room physicians' groups at Ft. Frances Cabarani Hospital in Alexandria and Willis Knighten Hospital in Shreveport. He was the chief executive officer for the Louisiana Medical Review Organization and founder of the Baton Rouge Weight Control Unit. He was the past president of the Baton Rouge Gem and Mineral Society. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Sarah Cooper of Prescott.
Survivors include his wife, Bonnie Cooper of Baton Rouge; two sons, Kevin and Kirk Cooper of Portland Ore.; one daughter, Meagan Cooper of Baton Rouge; and one granddaughter, Cori Cooper of Baton Rouge.
Funeral services were held May 22 at Baton Rouge.
Malinda Mathews
Malinda Mathews, 95, of Camden, formerly of Emmet, died Saturday, June 12, 1999, at her home.
Mrs. Mathews was born March 6, 1904, in Emmet to John and Fannie Roseberry Wade. She was a homemaker and a life long member of the Methodist Church. Mrs. Mathews also attended Believers Church in Camden for the last 10 years. Her pastor there was Terry Maris; she attended Wednesday night services at Chidester Faith and Fellowship Church with Bro. Tommy Barnhart. She was preceded in death by her husband, Tom Mathews.
Survivors include four daughters, Tinna Lyles and Mary Lou McNeal both of Chidester, Fannie Mathews of Longview, Texas, and Janice Bailey of Victoria, Texas; six grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, June 15, in the Herndon Funeral Home Chapel at Hope with Rev. Brian Bohrer and Rev. J.R. Callicott officiating. Burial was in Snell cemetery in Emmet under the direction of Herndon Funeral Home of Hope.
Sherry Elizabeth Cobb
Sherry Elizabeth Anderson Cobb, 48, of Cosby, Tenn., died Sunday, June 20, 1999, at Baptist Hospital of Cocke County after a long battle with cancer.
Mrs. Cobb was director of the Newport Animal Shelter and an Animal Control officer for the city of Newport, Tenn.; a member of Friends of the Shelter; secretary of Sevier County, Tenn., Riding Club; a member of Animal Control Association of Tennessee, the National Animal Control Association, and a member of St. Mark United Methodist Church in Camden.
Survivors include her husband, William J. Cobb Jr.; her stepson, William J. Cobb III; her parents, Wanda and Edgar Anderson; a sister, Sylvia Anderson Wray; a nephew, Nathaniel Anderson Wray all of Camden; four aunts, Ida Anderson and Helen Anderson of Wilmar, Hazel Bryson of Fort Smith and Marie Eley of Prescott; and many other relatives and friends.
The funeral was held at 8 p.m. this past Wednesday at the First United Methodist Church in Newport, Tenn., with Rev. Riley Huffoteller officiating. Burial was in the DeAnn cemetery in Prescott last Sunday at 3 p.m. with Rev. Jim Lenderman officiating.
Martha Jane Pogue
Martha Jane Pogue, 58, of Prescott, formerly of Terrell, Texas, died Sunday, June 27, 1999, at Medical Center of Mesquite, Texas.
Mrs. Pogue was born on January 22, 1941, in Winchester to Sid L. and Hazel L. Durham Pogue. She was business supervisor in the emergency room and admitting for the Medical Center of Mesquite. She was a member of Wesley United Methodist Church in Sulphur Springs, Texas. She was a member of B&PW; of Dallas. She was preceded in death by her father, her grandparents, Rev. and Mrs. Sammy Durham, and by one brother, Gene Pogue.
Survivors include one son, David Vincent and Monica of Terrell, Texas; her mother, Hazel L. Pogue of Prescott; special aunt, Eunice Chandler of Prescott; three grandchildren, Ashley Vincent, Abel Carrillo and Alyssa Carrillo all of Terrell, Texas; and cousins, Judy Duke and Shirley Klingman, both of Prescott.
Funeral services are today, Wednesday, June 30, at 2:00 p.m. at Mt. Moriah United Methodist Church near Rosston with Rev. Jerry Westmoreland officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Moriah cemetery under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Dorothy A. Wilson
Dorothy A. Wilson, 60, of Prescott died Wednesday, June 30, 1999.
Mrs. Wilson was born January 8, 1939, in Three River, Texas, to John W. Gierth and Anna Alhrecht Wilson. She was a certified nurses aide and a member of Prescott Church of Christ.
Survivors include her loving husband, Leonard W. Wilson of Prescott; two sons and daughters-in-law, Edward and Shelia Wilson and George and Samantha Wilson, all of Prescott; two step-daughters, Kathy Luck and Ann Lee, both of Texas; three brothers, John W. Gierth Jr., Willard E. Gierth and Roy Lee Gierth, all of Prescott; two sisters and brothers-in-law, Helen and David Hammock and Joylyn and William Putz, all of Hope; two granddaughters, Brook and Alexandria Wilson, both of Prescott; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Vollie Campbell
Vollie Campbell, 85, of Emmet died Thursday, July 1, 1999, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
Mrs. Campbell was born February 11, 1914, in Nevada County to Owen and Maudie Rogers McBride. She was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church. Mrs. Campbell was preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Campbell, who died in 1976, two sons, Charles T. and R.C. Campbell, and by two grandsons, Charles Allen and Clint Eric Campbell.
Survivors include two sons, Edmond Campbell and Wayne Campbell, both of Emmet; four daughters, Emma Hignight of Ft. Smith, Betty Honey of Prescott, Carolyn Sanford of Prescott and Jo Ann Sneed of Hope; two sisters, Helen Kelly of Prescott and Pauline Crouse of Texarkana, Texas; 15 grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.

Martha Jane Langston
Martha Jane Langston, 82, of Hope died Friday, July 2, 1999, at Christus St. Michael Health Center in Texarkana, Texas.
Mrs. Langston was born February 2, 1917, in Centerville. She was the daughter of Owen and Grace (Maunz) Jones. A housewife, Mrs. Langston was a member of Riversidc Baptist Church in Fulton.
Survivors include her husband, Jeff Langston of Hope; two sons, Dennis Langston of Carlisle, Penn., and Jim Langston of Hope; one daughter, Nancy Bauer of Carrollton, Texas; two sisters, Dorothy Langston of Hope and Mavis Hotchkiss of Portland, Ore.; six grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.

Essie N. Page
Essie N. Page, 89, of Prescott died Friday, July 2, 1999, at Baptist Medical Center in Arkadelphia.
Mrs. Page was born October 25, 1919, in Sabine Parrish, La., to Calvin and Betty Thomas Sewell. A farmer and a homemaker, Mrs. Page was a Baptist. She was preceded in death by her husband, Fen F. Page, and a son, Raymond Page.
Survivors include one son, Sherwood Page of Emmet; two daughters, Julia Beardsley and Betty Jane Richardson, both of Prescott; one brother, Jesse Sewell of Center, Texas; two sisters, Dessie Finley of Mt. Vernon, Texas, and Lessie B. Botzany of Minden, La.; eleven great grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; and eleven great great grandchildren.

Herman Johnson
Herman C. Johnson, 84, of Prescott died Friday, July 2, 1999, in an automobile accident.
Mr. Johnson was born January 4, 1915, at Laneburg. Having served in the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Johnson was a member of New Salem Methodist Church of Laneburg.
Survivors include three sons, Jimmy Johnson of Chandler, Texas, Billy Johnson and Larry Johnson, both of Prescott; one sister, Dera Richardson of Dumas, Texas; seven grandchildren; and 12 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were Monday, July 5, at New Salem Methodist Church with Rev. Joy Callicott officiating. Burial was in New Salem cemetery under the direction of Smith Funeral Home of Stamps.
Richard S. 'Dick' Kale III
Richard S. 'Dick" Kale III, 67, of Lake Wales, Fla., formerly of Mabelvale, died Wednesday, June 30, 1999, at Lake Wales Medical Center.
Mr. Kale was born December 24, 1931, in Trenton, N.J., to Samuel Stewart Strum Stryker and Julia Steward Kale. He was fire marshall of Osceola County, Fla., and a retired U.S. Army veteran from the Korean and Vietnam Wars. Mr. Kale was a member of Wayside Baptist Church in Lake Wales. He was preceded in death by his twin brother, Dr. Hubert W. Kale.
Survivors include his wife, Elsie L. 'Picky' Hicks Kale of Lake Wales; one son, Edward 'Eddie' Rothel Robin Kale of Lake Wales; two daughters, Kelly Ann Kale of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., and Kardyn Michelle Eddleman of Lake Wales; three brothers, Donald Walter Kale and William Henry Kale of New Jersey and James Edward Kale of Ft. Lauderdale; two sisters, Barbara Kale Falzinni and Linda Janet Kale of New Jersey; and six grandchildren, Amanda Kay Kale, Allison Elizabeth Eddleman, Race Stryker Kale, Tuscharora Farrell Kale, John Louis Eddleman and Kari Ellen Campbell.

Elgie Arington Carman
Elgie Arington Carman, 76, of Prescott died Sunday, July 18, 1999, at Medical Park Hospital in Hope.
Mr. Carman was born on September 15, 1922, in Prescott to Jim and Minnie Yarberry Carman. He was a retired security guard, a former tv repairman for Zenith, a member of Sweet Home Baptist Church and an U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was preceded in death by one brother, Dorris 'Buddy' Carman and by one sister, Estelle Edwards.
Survivors include his wife, Ethel Mae Snyder Carman of Prescott; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tommy and Jane Carman of North Little Rock and Bill and Linda Carman of Bluff City; one daughter and son-in-law, Mary Ann and Charles Shupienus of Alexandria, Va.; one sister, Odelle Collier of Hope; one sister-in-law, Doris Carman of Prescott; five grandchildren; three great grandsons; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 20, at Sweet Home Baptist Church with Bro. J.W. McAdams and Bro. Harley Sisson officiating. Burial was in Sweet Home cemetery under the direction of Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Hillman H. May
Hillman H. May, 89, of Bodcaw died Sunday, July 11, 1999, in a Hope nursing home.
Mr. May was a former two-term state representative in the Arkansas General Assembly from Nevada County and he was retired as a teacher and coach. He was also retired from the U.S. Postal Service in Magnolia since 1973, a veteran of service in the U.S. Army during World War II, a member and former deacon of First Baptist Church of Magnolia. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dovie Waters May, his parents, James Marian May and Elizabeth Hairston May, and 11 brothers and sisters.
Survivors include nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were Tuesday, July 13, at Bailey Funeral Home Chapel in Magnolia with Rev. Glen Cannon officiating. Burial was in Willisville cemetery under the direction of Bailey Funeral Home of Magnolia.
Pallbearers were Alvin Butler, James V. May, Gaylon Waters, Tommy Ray Waters, Truett Waters and Nolen Caudle.
