Orval W. Hays
Orval W. Hays, 81, of Garland, Texas, formerly of Delight, died Monday, August 28, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Hays was born December 20, 1918 in Wallowa, Ore., to Walter and Cora Bonham Hays. He was retired from the breeding and research department of Green Giant Canning Company. He was also a former employee of Austin Engineers and Builders of Houston, Texas, and he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Hays was preceded in death by his wife, Avelene Hendrix Hays, who died in April 1989, and by one son, Leslie Hays.
Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Diann and Richard Lamb of Garland, Texas, and Linda and David Petrie of Anchorage, Alaska; one brother, Ervin Hays of Wallawalla, Wash.; seven grandchildren; and fourteen great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 30, at Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home Chapel with Wallace Alexander officiating. Burial was in Antoine cemetery under the direction of Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Edgar W. Henley
Edgar W. Henley, 81, of Laneburg died Wednesday, August 30, 2000, at Christus St. Michael Health System in Texarkana, Texas.
Mr. Henley was born January 5, 1919, in Reeder to John and Alva Guesner Henley. He was a retired special agent with the Internal Revenue Service for 30 years. He worked several years as an investigative reporter for a district attorney before he returned home to enjoy farm life. He was a member of Laneburg Baptist Church. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the European theater with the 79th Infantry Division. He remained an active member of the Camp Fannin Association of World War II veterans in Tyler, Texas.
Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Marguerite McGough Henley of Laneburg; three sisters, Mildred H. Cornelius of Prescott, Willodene McCroskey of Greenville, Texas, and Mary (Peggy) Lehman of Mountain Home; one brother-in-law, James B. McGough of Laneburg; and a host of nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were held Friday, September 1, at Laneburg Baptist Church with Rev. David Hampton officiating. Burial was in Laneburg cemetery under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.

Vesta Roberson Malcom
Vesta Roberson Malcom, 88, of Okolona died Saturday, September 2, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Malcom was born February 13, 1912, in Okolona, the daughter of the late Jesse and Eula Tarpley Roberson. She was retired from Hollywood Vasserette in Arkadelphia. Mrs. Malcom was a member of Okolona Baptist Church, where she served as church pianist and church clerk for over 50 years. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Fred and Will Roberson.
Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Van Malcom; two sons, Jerry Malcom and his wife Wilma of Okolona, Joe Malcom and his wife Barbara of Mt. Juliet, Tenn.; three brothers, Paul Roberson, Flave Roberson and Wayne (Hap) Roberson all of Arkadelphia; nine grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 5, in Okolona Baptist Church with Bro. Johnny Jackson and Bro. N.C. Bryan officiating. Interment followed in Okolona cemetery by Ruggles-Wilcox Funeral Home of Arkadelphia.
Carlos Antonio 'Chubby' Haynie
Carlos Antonio ‘Chubby' Haynie, 21, died Monday, September 4, 2000, in an automobile accident near Prescott.
Mr. Haynie was born October 28, 1978, to Lillie Cunningham and Carson Haynie Jr. in Prescott. He joined Church of the Living God while very young in Tyler, Texas, and later joined Mt. Canaan in Gurdon and then New Beginning in Prescott, but was presently attending Eastern Star Baptist Church in Gurdon.
Carlos was a 1997 graduate of Prescott High School, where he received numerous awards in music and sports, including the basketball Curley Wolves Award for 1996-97; Prescott athletics basketball for three years; track for 1996-97, instrumental music department Outstanding Achievement Award in recognition of outstanding service; and band crew for 1994-97.
He was employed with Precision Industries in Malvern.
Carlos was preceded in death by a brother, Leonard Andrew Cunningham, his maternal grandmother, Evelyn Buckner, and his paternal grandfather, Carson Haynie.
Survivors include two children, Lillian and Latrice Haynie of Gurdon; his mother, Lillie Cunningham of Prescott; his father and step-mother, Carson Haynie Jr., and Lana of Prescott; his fiancee, Carolyn Reed of Arkadelphia; two brothers, Marcus Warren and his wife Vanessa of Arkadelphia and Shannon Haynie of Prescott; three sisters, Dwanna Curtis and her husband Tyrone of Chidester, Tequila Warren of Prescott and Victoria Allen of Gurdon; his maternal grandfather, Gilbert Davis of Gurdon; his paternal grandmother, Geneva Haynie of Chidester; a special aunt, Brenda Daniels of Tyler, Texas, and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 7, at Munn's Chapel Baptist Church in Prescott with Rev. Arthur Hill and Rev. Herbert Adams officiating.
Charlotte Estelle Yancey
Charlotte Estelle Yancey, 91, of Prescott died Saturday, September 9, 2000.
Mrs. Yancey was married
to the late Clifton Thomas Yancey, who preceded her in death in November 1970. She was a member of First Baptist Church of Prescott and Beech Street Baptist Church of Texarkana.
Survivors include her son, John Clifton Yancey of Prescott; a daughter, Mary Yancey Ruggles of Texarkana; five grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, September 12, at Shackelford Funeral Home in Prescott. Burial was in DeAnn cemetery in Prescott under the direction of Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott.

Lee Eunice Cole
Lee Eunice Cole, 85, died Friday, September 1, 2000, at Beverly Health and Rehab in Prescott.
Mrs. Cole was born September 12, 1914, in Nevada County to the late Lillie Fischer and Charlie Alexander. She married
the late John B. Cole and to this union two sons were born. One son, Johnny L. Cole, preceded both parents in death. She was a faithful and dedicated member of Munn's Chapel Baptist Church. She served on the usher board and also served as a kitchen helper during vacation Bible school.
She leaves to cherish her memories one son, James E. Cole of Prescott; one daughter-in-law, Verdia Cole of Prescott; two brothers, Elmer (Erma) Alexander of Rockford, Ill., and Jake (Bulia) Alexander of Las Vegas, Nev.; four sisters, Vira Jean (Early) Martin of Rosston, Belandis Box Easter of Chicago, Ill., Essie Mae Sockwell of Dallas, Texas, and Melvinia (Samuel) Mixon of Atwater, Calif.; seven grandchildren; nine great grandchildren; eight great great grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Funeral services were Friday, September 8, at Munn's Chapel Baptist Church in Prescott with Rev. Arthur Hill, and Rev. Henry L. Bell officiating. Burial was in New Salem cemetery under the direction of Hicks Funeral Home of Hope.
Douglas Byron Waters
Douglas Byron Waters, 81, of Hope died Monday, September 25, 2000.
Mr. Waters was born November 29, 1918, in Rosston to Willard Owen and Alta Lee Warmack Waters. He was retired from the Arkansas Highway Department and he was a retired U.S. Army Lt. Colonel, who served in WWII and the Korean War. He was a mason, a member of the American Legion and attended Patmos Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and sister-in-law, Charles E. and Mary Sue Waters; and a sister, Edna Ruth Waters Holland.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Margaret Louise Kent Waters, a daughter and son-in-law, Jenny Lee and Ben Gee Waller Jr.; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Douglas Kent and Lawana Waters and James Bryon Waters; three grandchildren; Todd Waller, Wendy Cox and Brandon Waters; and six great grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 28, at Herndon Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Bobby Joe Wright officiating. Burial was in Macedonia cemetery under the direction of Herndon Funeral Home of Hope.
John Tate
John Tate, 89, of Waldo died Monday, September 25, 2000, at Meadowbrook Lodge in Magnolia.
Mr. Tate was born February 27, 1911, in Clark County. He was a retired sawmill maintenance worker and he was a Baptist.
Survivors include his wife, Minnie Rogers Tate of Waldo.
Funeral services were held Saturday, September 30, at Waldo Church of Christ with Bro. Jeff Jefferson officiating. Burial was in Cedar Grove cemetery under the direction of Brazzel/Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Oleta W. McRae
Oleta W. McRae, 82, of Prescott died Wednesday, September 27, 2000.
Mrs. McRae was born July 28, 1918. She was an active member of Prescott society. She was a diligent supporter of Girl Scouts, garden club, bridge club, band boosters, local schools serving on the PTA as president, secretary of the Country Club, active member of First Presbyterian Church for 80 years. She served as an elder and nightly committed to Presbyterian Women, Presbytery of the Pines, Vera Lloyd Presbyterian Home and Family Services. She loved Razorback games and horse races.
Survivors include her husband of 60 years, Duncan McRae; one daughter, Mary Ellen McRae of Little Rock; adoptive children, which were nieces and nephews, Claudie Anne Hartness of Monticello and Susan Leedy, Van of Anaheim, Calif., Joel Culpepper of San Antonio, Texas, Duncan Culpepper of Prescott and Malcom Culpepper of Jonesboro and Van Culpepper of Yakima, Wash.
Funeral services were held at Shackelford Funeral Home Saturday, September 30, with Rev. Robin T. Nygaard officiating. Burial was in DeAnn cemetery in Prescott under the direction of Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott.
Walter C. Harris
Walter C. Harris, 66, of Prescott died Saturday, September 30, 2000, at Baptist Medical Center in Arkadelphia.
Mr. Harris was born December 16, 1933, in Nevada County to Fred Watson and Teena Alma Armstrong Harris. He was a carpenter and a farmer and a member of the Church of Christ of Prescott. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Wilma Jean "Billie" Harris, who died in 1990, and by one sister, Jane Haines.
Survivors include his wife, Frances Harris of Prescott; one son, Fred William Harris of Prescott; four daughters, Tina Marie Barlow of Benton, Barbara Fore of Laneburg, Karen McBride and Angela Fore both of Emmet; one brother, Billy Watson Harris of Tulsa, Okla.; two sisters, Sue Hudnall of Kaufman, Texas, and Nell Settles of Omaha, Texas; and 11 grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Monday, October 2, at the Church of Christ in Prescott with Carl Dougan and Gene Cloer officiating. Burial was in Snell cemetery in Emmet under the direction of Brazzel-Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Eugene 'Joe' Ledbetter
Ellis Eugene ‘Joe' Ledbetter, 74, passed from this life on Friday, September 29, 2000, at his home in Prescott.
Mr. Ledbetter was a member of Westside Church of Christ. He was a retired forklift driver with Potlatch and he was honorably discharged from the U.S. Navy after serving from 1943 to 1946. Joe was loved by everyone who knew him and he will be missed by all who loved him. He was preceded in death by his parents, Joseph and May Ledbetter, five brothers, Darius, Dennis, Otis, Wallace and Dale Ledbetter as well as one sister, Mary Ledbetter.
Survivors includes his wife, Ruby McKinnon Ledbetter of Prescott, two sons, tow daughters and one daughter-in-law; Charles and Ronda Ledbetter of Prescott, James Dale Ledbetter of Prescott, Patsy Ledbetter of Emmet, and Paula May Ledbetter of Prescott. Three grandchildren were the light of his life - Joseph, Lexie and Mallory Ledbetter and one special child, Megan Hughes.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 1, at 2 p.m. at Shackelford Funeral Home in Prescott. Burial was in Pleasant Hill cemetery near Prescott under the direction of Shackelford Funeral Home of Prescott.
Charles L. 'Chuck' Honey
Charles L. ‘Chuck' Honey, 62, of Prescott, a lawyer and former state legislator, passed away Thursday, September 28, 2000, at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock after a lengthy illness.
Mr. Honey was born August 10, 1938, in Nevada County to Leroy and Leota Almand Honey. He worked his way through high school and graduated from Prescott High School in 1957. He hitchhiked to Fayetteville to attend the University of Arkansas. While there he worked as a Washington County Deputy Sheriff and also as an employee for Nelson Funeral Home. On graduation in 1961 he accepted a job with U.S. Sen. J. William Fulbright. He later became the administrative assistant for U.S. Rep. Orrin D. Harris. Mr. Honey attended law school at night at George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
He was admitted to the Arkansas House of Representatives and served until 1978. He has continued an active law practice in southwest Arkansas for 35 years. In addition, he owned a recording company in Nashville, Tenn., and enjoyed representing many country and western musicians over the years. He liked to recall that, as a teenager, he played back guitar for Johnny Horton. He was an active member of Central Baptist Church in Prescott. He was a Mason and a member of the Prescott Lodge.
Mr. Honey was preceded in death by his parents and one granddaughter, Rachel Honey.
Survivors include his wife of 41 years, Betty Campbell Honey of Prescott; two sons and daughter-in-law, Marc and Judith Honey and of Hot Springs and Chris Honey of Little Rock; two grandchildren, Ashton and Alexandra ‘Allie' Honey, both of Hot Springs; as well as a special cousin, Barbara Tidwell.
Funeral services were held Sunday, October 1, at Central Baptist Church with Rev. Chad Brandon and Rev. David Tidwell officiating. Burial was in Laneburg cemetery under the direction of Brazzel / Cornish Funeral Home of Prescott.
Pallbearers were Jim Smith, Duncan Culpepper, Gene Hale, Charles ‘Sonny' Haynie, Tommy Birdsong, Benny Tidwell, Randy Hignight and Johnny Campbell. Honorary pallbearers were the doctors and staff of the intensive care unit of Baptist Hospital of Little Rock.
