Glenn Norton

GLENN NORTON, a resident of Green Forest, was born Feb. 13, 1915, in Green Forest, a son of William Walter and Annie Marie (Porter) Norton. He died Friday, July 30, 2004, in his home at the age of 89.

Glenn was a retired farmer and teacher, having received his teaching certificate from Arkansas Tech University in Russellville. He taught in Green Forest as well as several of the surrounding old school houses. He was a member of the Church of Christ in Green Forest.

He is survived by his daughter and son-in-law, Ruth Ann and James Lindstrom of Green Forest; two brothers and sisters-in-law, Ross and Joyce Norton of San Antonio, Texas; and Claude and Gladys Norton of Fort Worth, Texas; three grandsons, Robert, Jeffrey, and Kevin; six great-grandchildren, Jonathan, Andrew, Jason, Valerie, Emily, and Kahlan; several other relatives; and a host of friends.

On July 9, 1939, he was united in marriage with Lucy Jane (Tusing) Norton who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, William and Annie Norton; and his brother, Fred Norton.

Funeral services were to be held Tuesday, Aug. 3, 2004, at the Church of Christ in Green Forest with Mr. Ron Adams officiating. Interment was to follow in the Fair Grove Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.

Irma Leanna Stahl

Irma Leanna Stahl, 79, of Carefree, Ariz., died July 21 at Scottsdale Healthcare Center in Scottsdale, Ariz. She was born Jan. 15, 1925, at Indianapolis, Ind., to Charles and Bertha Gifford Kendrick.

She was a homemaker.

Survivors include her husband, Wallace G. Stahl, of the home; two sons, Raymond Stahl of Phoenix, Ariz., and John Robinson, of Alma, Mich.; one daughter, Rose marie Le Foy, of Pocatello, Idaho; one brother, Mile Kendrick, of Indianapolis; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Graveside services were held on July 28 at Eureka Springs Cemetery with John Robinson officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Brashears Funeral Home of Huntsville.

Frances JoAnn Gilbreath

Frances JoAnn Gilbreath, 66, of Holiday Island, died Sunday, July 18, at St. Mary's Hospital in Rogers. She was born March 24, 1938, in Hardy to Robert Bryden and Bessie Mae Wise Sample.

She was a real estate broker and a member of Spring River Baptist Church in Hardy.

She was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by two daughters, Kimberly Egly and Floyee Beaver, both of Holiday Island; one son, Bryden J. Gilbreath, of Bentonville; one sister, Sarah Higginbotham, of Bentonville; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Funeral services were held July 22 at Spring River Baptist Church in Hardy with Floyd Rikard officiating. Burial was in Bronaugh Cemetery, in Hardy, under the direction of Higginbotham Funeral Service of Hardy.

Verna Mae Maberry

Verna Mae Maberry, a long-time resident of Eureka Springs, died July 21 in Oklahoma City. She was born Oct. 31, 1922, in Lemesa, Texas, the daughter of Wesley and Eva Mae Umphrey.

She was married to Cecile Maberry on Oct. 15, 1954, and they were previous owners of the New Orleans Hotel, the New Basin Theater in Eureka Springs, and the Main Theater in Berryville. They also co-owned the Dairy Dessert Drive-Inn and leased Lake Leatherwood for 30 years. Mrs. Maberry was a member of First United Methodist Church.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and her brother-in-law, John O. Maberry. She is survived by one daughter, Stephanie Maberry Hess, son-in-law Chris Hess, one grandson and two step-children, all of Warr Acres, Okla.; her aunt, Claudia Ackerman; nephew Todd Maberry; niece Sandy Maberry Stamps; and other relatives and many friends.

Cremation services were provided by Demuth Funeral Home in Oklahoma City on July 22. A memorial service will be held at Lake Leatherwood on a date in October to be announced.

Sue Clark

SUE CLARK, a resident of Eureka Springs, was born Aug. 19, 1935, in Pineville, Ky., a daughter of Clara Bush. She died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, in Fayetteville, at the age of 69.

Sue was the vice-president of bookkeeping at the Bank of Eureka Springs for many years.

She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Debbie and Barry Fink and Tori and Steve Bush all of Eureka Springs; her son and daughter-in-law, Billy and Sherry Clark of Berryville; five grandchildren, Jenny Moore and her husband Jason and Susan Freeman all of Fayetteville, Mallory Clark and Chance Clark both of Berryville, and Jesse Bush of Eureka Springs; two great-grandchildren, Ryan Moore and Lexie Moore both of Fayetteville; many other relatives; and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Clara and George Kostas; one brother, Bill Rush; and one infant daughter, Linda Sue Clark.

Memorial funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Nelson Chapel of the Springs in Eureka Springs. Interment was in the Eureka Springs Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.

William Browning King Gladden

WILLIAM BROWNING KING GLADDEN, of Eureka Springs, died Wednesday, Jan. 12, 2005, near Eureka Springs at the age of 50. King leaves his wife, Grace, daughter, Crystal and son, Will who celebrate the fact that King has reached his final destination in the arms of our loving Savior.

He was born on Dec. 4, 1954, at Boone County Hospital, Harrison, Ark., a son of the late Dr. Jean C. Gladden and Dee (King) Gladden Mulvihill, and a brother of Delphine Williams, Jane Corrigan, Anne Milburn and the late Peter Gladden.

William King Gladden held a graduate degree in banking from the Southwest School of Banking, Southern Methodist University, as well as a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration from Regis University, Denver. He was the founding Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Community First Bank. Mr. Gladden started his involvement with banking over 23 years ago.

Prior to his employment by the bank, he served as Executive Vice President and as a member of the Board of Directors of First National Bank of Rogers. He also served as Chairman of the First Eureka Springs Bank and First Arvest Bank of Carroll County. Before joining Arvest Bank Group in 1993, Mr. Gladden served the Bank of Eureka Springs for nine years, beginning as Assistant Vice President and serving as President and Chief Executive Officer from 1990-1993.

King was active in many community projects throughout Northwest Arkansas and the state including serving on the Campaign for the 21st Century at the University of Arkansas, the board of NARTI, and the College of Medicine Admissions Committee at the University of Arkansas.

Memorial funeral services were held Saturday, Jan. 15, 2005, at the Fellowship Bible Church of Northwest Arkansas under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service. NORMA L. ADAIR, a resident of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, was born May 1, 1921, in Egypt, Arkansas, a daughter of George Henry and Julia Ellen (Harral) Cook. She departed this life Saturday (October 12, 2002) in Springdale, Arkansas, at the age of 81. Mrs. Adair was owner and operator of Mud Street Store and Country Cuzzin in Eureka Springs. She was a member of the Faith Christian Family Church in Eureka Springs and a former board member of the C.A.P.C. She is survived by her two daughters and sons-in-law, Patricia and Louis Brady of Eureka Springs and Carol and Bob Murray of Corinth, Texas; one brother and sister-in-law, Thad and Jean Cook of Berryville, Arkansas; one sister and brother-in-law, Nancy and Fred Stogner of Flint, Michigan; five grandchildren, Bobby Murray of Corinth; Diana and her husband, Robert Black of Denison, Texas, Dawn and her husband, Ken Stouten of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Chris and his wife, Krista Brady of Warren, Michigan, and Dana and her husband, David Teague of Eureka Springs; eight great grandchildren; two nieces; five nephews; and several other relatives and friends.

EUGENE W. (GENE) ADAMS, a resident of Eureka Springs, Arkansas was born November 27, 1920 in West Berlin, New Jersey a son of James William and Eva (Cleaver) Adams. He departed this life Monday, March 11, 2002 in Eureka Springs at the age of 81.
Mr. Adams was a brick layer and a heating and cooling salesman and repairman. He was of the protestant faith and a member of the Eagles in Shell Knob.
He is survived by his sister, Viola and her husband Fredrick J. Noel of Eureka Springs, Arkansas; two brothers, Clarence P. Adams of Berryville and William A. Adams of Sicklerville, New Jersey; two sons, Ciro Eugene Adams of Mantua, New Jersey and Eugene Warren Adams of Sewell, New Jersey; several other relatives and friends.
He was united in marriage with Barbara (Wright) Adams who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, one sister, Eva Adams, and three brothers, James H. Adams, George E. Phifer and Robert R. Phifer.
Graveside funeral services will be 2:30 P.M. Thursday at the Oak Hill Cemetery with Pastor James Colwell officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.

HUGH T. ALEXANDER, a resident of Branson, Missouri, was born November 16, 1922, in Maple Springs, Arkansas, a son of Ed and Polly (Madewell) Alexander. He departed this life Tuesday (November 19, 2002) in Hollister, Missouri, at age 80. Mr. Alexander was a carpenter. He was of the Baptist faith. He is survived by two sons, and daughters-in-law, Tom and Gloria Alexander of Branson, and LeRoy Mervyn & Grace Alexander of Barling, Arkansas; seven grandchildren; fourteen great grandchildren; one brother, Joe Alexander of Huntsville, Arkansas; one sister, Ruth Smith of Berryville, Arkansas; two nieces; and one nephew. On May 23, 1941, he was united in marriage with Marion Evelyn (Johns) Alexander who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Polly Alexander; and one sister, Nannie Ellison.

SUSAN E. (MURAN) ALIBOZYK, a resident of Eureka Springs, Arkansas, was born February 3, 1916`, in Amsterdam, New York, a daughter of Kajeton and Elizabeth (Sketras) Murauskas. She departed this life Wednesday (October 9, 2002) in her home at the age of 86. Mrs. Alibozyk was an accomplished milliner and seamstress. She and her husband owned and operated The Big Maple Tavern in Perth, New York in the 1950’s. In 1959, they moved to Phoenix, Arizona, where Susan continued to reside following her husbands death in 1961. In 1996, at the age of 80, she moved to Eureka Springs to be near her daughter, Debbie. She was known as Grandma Sue to all. She is survived by her daughters, Deborah Susan Frisbie of Eureka Springs, and Beth Spencer of Lakehead, California; and several nieces and nephews. On March 17, 1943, she was united in marriage with Frank C. Alibozyk who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Kajeton and Elizabeth Murauskas; two sisters; and two brothers.

DELMA F. ALLEN, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas, was born January 9, 1940, in Stone County, Missouri, a daughter of Henry Rolla and Elsie Briece (Garrison) Meadows. She departed this life Sunday (September 15, 2002) in her home at the age of 62. Mrs. Allen was a school teacher in Berryville. She was a member of the Southern Heights Baptist Church in Berryville. She is survived by two daughter and sons-in-law, Denise and Marc Thiry and Dawn Allen and Gray Squires all of Berryville; two brothers, Robert Meadows of Bainbridge Island, Washington, and Jessie Meadows of Oakley, California; three sisters, Della Eaton of Reeds Spring, Missouri, Donna Swofford of Tracy, California, and Delphia Smith of Berryville; three grandchildren, Brian Thiry of Fayetteville, Arkansas, Tyler Squires and Troy Squires both of Berryville; and several nieces and nephews. On February 1, 1957, she was united in marriage with Earl Dean Allen who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Rex Meadows, Ralph Meadows, Roy Meadows, and Raymond Meadows; one sister, Millie Meadows; and her granddaughter, Nicole Thiry.

PAM ANGUS, a resident of Harrison, Arkansas, was born August 19, 1964, in Wichita, Kansas, a daughter of Roy Earl and Dorothy Ann (Phillips) Gabbard. She departed this life Sunday (September 22, 2002) in Little Rock, Arkansas, at the age of 38. Mrs. Angus was an office clerk for Smalley Enterprises in Harrison. On May 29, 1999, she was united in marriage with William Brent Angus who survives her of the home. She is also survived by her son, Cody James Lankford of Harrison; three brothers, Mark Edward Lankord of Owasso, Oklahoma, James Evert Phillips of Berryville, Arkansas, and Rusty Lee Gabbard of Harrison; her parents, Rusty and Dorothy Gabbard of Harrison; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends. She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Clinton Phillips.

VIOLA ASHFORD, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas was born January 30, 1912 in Tucumcari, New Mexico a daughter of Joseph and Clare Mae (Webster) Richardson. She departed this life Monday, October 14, 2002 in Berryville at the age of 90. Mrs. Ashford was a member of the Valley View Baptist Church. She retired from motel housekeeping and was a volunteer for the Carroll Regional Medical Center Auxillary in Berryville. She is survived by two sons, J.H. and his wife Jean Gilbert of Cutbank, Montana and Harvey Gilbert of Nixa, Missouri; one daughter, Nadean Houghton of Harrison, Arkansas; fifteen grandchildren; twenty-three great grandchildren; five great great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. On November 25, 1930 she was united in marriage with John Gilbert who preceded her in death. On March 1, 1970 she was united in marriage with V.E. “Tex” Ashford who also preceded her in death. One son, Joe Gilbert, four daughters, Frances Gilbert, Ella Jean Gilbert, Ellda Lee Finch and Shirley Reagan along with her parents also preceded Mrs. Ashford in death.

GARRY INEZ “NEWMAN” ATCHLEY, 81, of Oak Grove, Arkansas died Sunday, July 21, 2002 in her home. She was born April 5, 1921 near Oak Grove, daughter of Ray and Zora (Fanning) Newman. Mrs. Atchley was a homemaker and a beautician. She was a member of the Mt. Olivet Freewill Baptist Church of Blue Eye, Missouri. She enjoyed watching the Green Forest Tiger Basketball games as well as the Oak Grove Baseball teams. She also showed fox trotter horses. She is survived by a daughter, Jacqueline Powers and her husband, Harlen of Oak Grove, three grandchildren, Shena Lovett and her husband, Roy of Berryville, Darren Powers and his wife Marian of Carr Lane, Missouri, and Jaime Inez Finch and her husband Jimmie of Ozark, Missouri; three great grandchildren, Daniel and Austin Lovett and Anna Powers; and her sister, Loetta White and her husband, Jimmie of Oak Grove. On January 29, 1941 she was united in marriage with James Alfred Atchley who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Jack Newman.

MARY F. ATCHLEY, a resident of Oak Grove, Arkansas, was born December 27, 1930, in Hollis, Oklahoma, a daughter of Ernest June and Jane Elizabeth (Moss) Stephens. She departed this life Saturday (October 19, 2002) in Springfield, Missouri, at the age of 71. Mrs. Atchley was an apartment manager. She was a member of the Oak Grove Freewill Baptist Church. On June 1, 1952, she was united in marriage with Norman Glen Atchley who survives her of the home. She is also survived by her three children, Glenda Sue Phillips of Bella Vista, Arkansas, Michael Atchley of Springdale, Arkansas, and Gayla June Coccetella of Derby, Kansas; six brothers, A.J. Stephens of Billings, Montana, Dewey Stephens of Alpena, Arkansas, Denzil Stephens of El Dorado, Kansas, Edwin Stephens and Willie Stephens both of Wichita, Kansas, and Raymond Stephens of Dighton, Kansas; one sister, Erma Lou Hensley of South Coffeyville, Oklahoma; and twelve grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ernest and Jane Stephens; and one brother, Hershel Stephens.

LOIS AUTRY, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas was born June 29, 1914, in Cabanol, Arkansas, a daughter of Sam and Bell (Smith) Colvin. She departed this life Friday (August 16, 2002) in her home at the age of 88. Mrs. Autry was employed by Ocoma Foods and was most recently a greeter at Wal-Mart in Berryville. She was a member of the First Freewill Baptist Church in Berryville. She is survived by one son, Carroll Autry of Berryville; two grandsons, Kenith David Autry of Berryville, and William Fred Autry of Buffalo, Missouri; two granddaughters, Lisa Kissee of Springfield, Missouri and Cindy McCelland of Nixa, Missouri; four great grandsons, Seth Autry of Buffalo, Jeremy Kissee and Jason Kissee both of Springfield, and Matthew McCelland of Nixa, Missouri; one great granddaughter, Chelsey Autry of Buffalo; one brother, Bob Colvin of Berryville; and several nieces and nephews. On March 13, 1932, she was united in marriage with Rev. William Kenneth Autry who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents; and one son, Harold Dean Autry.

John Wasson Ballard
J.W. BALLARD, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas was born February 7, 1924 in Truman, Arkansas a son of Sidney Franklin and Elma Pearl (Richard) Ballard. He departed this life Saturday, March 30, 2002 in Fayetteville, Arkansas at the age of 78.
Mr. Ballard was a veteran having served his country with the U.S. Marines during World War II. He was a salesman and of the Baptist faith. He was a member of the V.F.W. in Berryville and the Carroll County Country Club where he was an avid golfer
On April 30, 1949 he was united in marriage with Ella Louise (Taylor) Ballard who survives him. He is also survived by two daughters, Linda and her husband Matt Schiefer of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Melissa and her husband David Thurston-Niemann of Grandview, Arkansas; two sisters, Joy and her husband Jim Downey of Thousand Oaks, California and Peggy and her husband Bill Stuckenbroker of Eureka Springs; several other relatives and many friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, Howard, Paul, Bobby and Jimmy Ballard.
Memorial funeral services will be 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, April 3, 2002 at the Grandview Baptist Church with Bro. Billy McCall officiating. Arrangements were by Nelson Funeral Service.

BERTIL BJORK, a resident of Eureka Springs, Arkansas was born June 15, 1919 in Rockford, Illinois, a son of Carl and Elsie (Westinguard) Bjork. He departed this life Friday, January 25, 2002 in his home at the age of 82.
Mr. Bjork was a member of the Church of God Pentecostal in Denver, Arkansas and was tool and dye maker.
On September 4, 1980 he was united in marriage with Alice (Alderman) Bjork who survives him. He is also survived by six step-children, Della Pauley of Mountain View, Missouri, Richard Henderson of Golden, Missouri, Donna Richardson of Belvidere, Illinois, Linda Lambert of Sumung, Illinois, Dale Smith of Rockford, Illinois and David Henderson of Eureka Springs; one brother, Alder Bjork of Grand Junction, Colorado; several other relatives and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Roger Bjork and Allen Bjork.
Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M. Monday, January 28, 2002 at the Nelson’s Chapel of the Springs in Eureka Springs with Rev. Doug Grinder officiating. Interment will follow in the Oak Hill Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service. Memorial donations may be made to the Church of God Pentecostal in Denver, Arkansas

GEORGIA FERN BONNER a resident of Berryville, Arkansas was born November 11, 1914 in Eureka Springs a daughter of William Jackson and Hattie Jane (Pinkley) Hensley. She departed this life Thursday, March 28, 2002 in Berryville at the age of 87.
Mrs. Bonner owned and operated her own beauty shop and was a waitress and a homemaker. She was of the Church of Christ faith.
She is survived by her son, Gerald Bonner, Sr. of Blackwater, Missouri; a daughter, Myrna “Lou” Thompson of Harrison, Arkansas; a sister, Velma Green of California, a sister-in-law, Aldora and Joe Scroggins of Missouri; and a brother-in-law, Mike Miller of California; five grandchildren; twenty-two great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren.
On June 13, 1937 she was united in marriage with Glenn Miller Bonner who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by five sisters, one brother, one grandson and one great grandson.
Graveside funeral services will be Wednesday, April 3, 2002 in the Rock House Cemetery with Mr. Frank Barnard officiating. Interment will follow in the Rock House Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.

IDA GERTRUDE “GERTIE” CLIFTON, a resident of Owasso, Oklahoma formerly of Berryville was born April 16, 1910 in the Nauvoo community of Stone County, Missouri a daughter of Esibuel Daniel and Lydia Ann (Clinkenbeard) Garrison. She departed this life Monday, April 8, 2002 in her home at the age of 91.
Mrs. Clifton was a charter member of the First Assembly of God Church in Berryville. She owned and operated her own small business.
She is survived by her daughter, Lorene and her husband Clarence Lambert of Owasso, Oklahoma; her son, James and his wife Hilda Clifton of Georgetown, Kentucky; nine grandchildren and fourteen great grandchildren; a host of other relatives and many friends.
On February 22, 1927 she was united in marriage with Earl Cleo Clifton who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her parents, five brothers and five sisters.
Funeral services will be 2:00 P.M. Friday, April 12, 2002 at the First Assembly of God Church in Berryville with Rev. Dr. Clarence E. Lambert and Rev. David Keith. Interment will follow in the McCollough Cemetery under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.

CLIFF COLEMAN, a resident of Berryville, Arkansas was born November 12, 1942 in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma a son of Robert James and Nellie Mae (Maxey) Coleman. He departed this life Friday, April 5, 2002 in Eureka Springs, Arkansas at the age of 59.
Mr. Coleman was of the Baptist faith. He was a truck driver for the Carroll County Road Department and drove a trolley in Eureka Springs for several years.
On February 5, 1998, he was united in marriage with Ann (Corell) Coleman who survived him of the home. He is also survived by four children, Clifford Coleman, Jr, Robert Coleman, and Brenda Coleman all of Hawaii and Crestina Thibodeax of Felicity, Ohio; two sisters, Andrea White of Oak Harber, Washington and Jackie Parnin of Berryville; one brother, Johnny Coleman of Guthrie, Oklahoma; his parents, Robert and Nell Coleman of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 4:00 P.M. on Tuesday, April 9, 2002 at the Charles M. Nelson Memorial Chapel with Rev. Jim Capps officiating. Arrangements were made by Nelson Funeral Service.
