Morris Donald Wall
October 16, 1922 - May 29, 2013
Morris Donald Wall, a well known local businessman, died at age 90.
Morris Donald Wall of Hot Springs died Wednesday, May 29, 2013 and is now in his new home with his Heavenly Father.
He was born October 16, 1922, the son of Kodie E. Wall and Flossie Holland Wall.
At the age of five, Morris lost his beloved mother to pneumonia, and for some time he was raised by his loving Grandmother Wall.
Some years later, his father Kodie re-married
to their wonderful step-mother, Nobie Buie Wall, who along with their father treasured the children and raised them in a Christian home.
Morris is survived by his beloved wife Dorothy Frances (Hill) Wall, the love of his life and best friend for over sixty-seven years; two daughters and sons-in-law Linda Kay Rainwater (Merril) and Teresa Schnebly (Larry Joe) all of Hot Springs; two grandchildren Dylan Rainwater (Sherril) of Cleveland, Mississippi and Kristin Schnebly of Little Rock, Arkansas; great grandchildren Malli Elisabeth and Yancy Wall Rainwater; sister and brother-in-law Mildred and Maurice Reeves of Little Rock, Arkansas; a special niece and husband Karen and Dr. Robert P. Jones of Little Rock; many nieces and nephews and one brother, Kenneth Wall.
Morris was preceded in death by his parents; step-mother Nobie Wall and infant grandson Eric Nels Rainwater.
After high school, Morris was employed at Reynolds Metal Company as a crane operator for a short time and volunteered for the U. S. Navy at Hot Springs before he was drafted.
He was inducted into service at Little Rock, Arkansas, leaving immediately by train for San Diego, California where he received his basic training, leaving there immediately by ship for Guadalcanal, Solomon Island of the Pacific, with the 3rd fleet and was under V. Admiral William F. Halsey, known affectionately world over as Admiral 'Bull' Halsey.
At Guadalcanal he was assigned to P.T. Boat #103.
(John F. Kennedy, Lieutenant J. G. Was assigned to P.T. Boat #109).
When often asked in years later if he met Kennedy, Morris’ answer was sadly spoken 'we were fighting for our lives and country'.
Kennedy was assigned to another P.T. Boat after the 109 was destroyed.
Morris met Fleet Admiral Halsey and went on board the Saratoga (considered the largest aircraft carrier at that time) when it docked at Newmeia, New Caledonia (Nouvelle) French - taking on ammunition.
Morris’ P.T. Boat was docked there at the time taking on ammunition as well.
A shell was dropped and it caused a chain reaction.
P.T. Boat #103 was backed out of dock by some of the crew, and some fifty - one hundred men went into the water.
Three sailors including Morris fell flat on dock, Admiral Halsey sent a Captain’s Boat over to dock, took Morris on board, and said he could give Morris a citation or promotion in Rank, but said Morris could probably use the money more, raised him two ranks from Seaman 2nd Class to Boatman’s Mate 2nd Class.
He mustered out of the Navy at Algiers, New Orleans, Louisiana and Memphis, Tennessee on November 9, 1945.
He was honored with a granite marker at the Hot Springs WWII dedication for Veterans at Transportation Plaza.
Morris received his professional education under the G.I. Bill of Rights, and opened his business as a mechanical contractor 'Wall Brothers, Inc.' on Belding Avenue in Hot Springs.
He is a Deacon Emeritus of Hot Springs Baptist Church, where he was a member of the establishing 'Committee of Twelve' in the formation of the church.
He was honored with over fifty years of service to Sumpter Lodge No 419 F. & A. M.
Morris was a member of the Civil Service Commission of Hot Springs in past years and numerous Professional Organizations; but one of his most precious memories was teaching 5th grade boys at Second Baptist Church of Hot Springs, and the humble feeling he had when some of the boys never forgot his leadership and faith in God.
He was always touched by their love.
Some have even passed away before their teacher, and some have made him oh so humbled in his own life.
