Sandra Lee Tolliver Barnes
September 7, 1947 - July 16, 2015
Bentonville, Arkansas
Sandra Lee Tolliver Barnes, 67, of Bentonville, Arkansas, passed away Thursday July 16th, 2015 at the Circle of Life Hospice Legacy Village in
Bentonville Arkansas. She passed due to complications from pneumonia and
longtime heart problems.
She was born in Sacramento, CA to Chester Jim Tolliver and Mary Dell
McBee Tolliver.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her oldest son Donald Jim Barnes in
2008 and her youngest brother Timothy Bill Tolliver in 2007.
Sandra is survived by her husband of 51 years, Stephen Dale Barnes, of
Bentonville and their remaining three sons; David Barnes and Stephen Lee
Barnes, both of Bentonville, Sean Barnes and partner Tom Phillips of
Lowell, AR, two brothers Jamie Tolliver and wife Wanda of Hollister, MO.,
Chris Tolliver and partner Eric Attwell of Hollister, MO., one sister, Belinda
Matthews of Republic, MO., one grandson Donald Drew Barnes and wife
Annette and a great grandson, Braden Don Alexander Barnes.
Sandy brought humor and joy to those around her. Our mother didn’t know
a stranger and she loved sharing stories and laughter with others. Sandy grew
up in Hollister, MO where her childhood included driving cars and drag
racing, driving boats and water skiing (even though she never learned to
swim) and playing pranks on her friends and family. She learned to drive in
an old army jeep and by the age of ten she was driving her Aunt from
Hollister to Springfield to shop on the square.
As a teenager she met and fell in love with Steven Dale Barnes, a young man
who had moved to the area to attend school. They married
on June 13th,
1964 and remained together to her final days. In the early years of their
marriage, even with a budding family of her own, she babysat in the home
and worked off and on with Walmart, building lifelong friendships with
parents of the children she spent the day loving and mothering as if they
were her own. Sandy assisted in setting up Walmart store number 1 and
enjoyed her work and the friends she made. In 1989 she retired from the
workforce, leaving behind friends and co-workers who had shared her
storytelling humor, smile, and great down home cooking! As her boys were
repeatedly told; 'Dont touch that food! It’s for work!'
Sandy then focused her attention to Steve and the boys and making a
wonderful home for them. Her home was often filled with family and
friends for the holidays or just over for a game of cards or pool. Over the
years her young loving spirit and motherly personality led to many of her
boys friends calling her Mom.
Her love of cars and boating was passed onto her boys. Many years were
shared canoeing and fishing and, seriously, she could cook the best fish and
hushpuppies in the area and we dare anyone to say it wasn’t so! As for the
canoeing, well, there has always been some question to the facts of the tale
of how Steve tipped the canoe, dumping her in less than a foot of water or
whether it was viscous rapids rushing over her head. The truth will never be
known.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2:00pm, Tuesday July 21, 2015 at

Following the service there will be a celebration of life.

Marjorie Maxine Hines
May 14, 1926 - June 22, 2015
Bentonville, Arkansas
Marjorie Maxine Hines, 89 of Bentonville, AR passed away, Monday,
June 22, 2015 at her residence in Bentonville, surrounded by her family.
She was born May 14th, 1926 in Nashville, AR to Virgil F. and Alta
Rhea Hooks McCauley.
Maxine married
Benjamin Gee Hines on August 31, 1947. They met in
college at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, AR and Ben was
immediately smitten. They were cheerleaders together before WWII
took Ben to France, Germany and Austria. Having survived being
separated by the Army for 2 years they married
their senior year. She
was quite popular on campus and Ben was afraid she might get away so
he issued the ultimatum - now or never. She chose now and worked
faithfully in each community where he pastored. She was the perfect
Ministers Wife, even though she had no idea she was marrying a United
Methodist Minister. After teaching in Camden, AR, Ft. Worth, TX and a
move to the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville they packed up their 2
young children, Susan and David to head for seminary at Perkins School
of Theology on the SMU campus in Dallas.
She was an educator in every sense of the word, not only working side
by side with her husband in the United Methodist Church but also
teaching Home Economics in the public schools in each of the towns
where they served. She was part of the group who created 'Challenged
Children Curriculum' for the Little Rock School District. She is
credited with starting the Dorcas Ministry in 8 United Methodist
churches. These groups make and deliver baby layettes to area
hospitals, as well as other groups. She was always active in the United
Methodist Women’s Organization serving many years on the Bazaar
committee for each church. She was on the Board of Directors for the
Bentonville Women’s Shelter and was instrumental in the development
of the Women’s Shelter Thrift Store. She trained and served as a
Stephen Minister, was a member and past officer of the Bentonville PEO
Chapter Cl, and a mentor for the many families who lived in the
Havenwood Apartment furnished and maintained by the First United
Methodist Church.
After serving in the ministry for 40 years and living in parsonages, she
and Ben retired to Bentonville in their very own house. She spent many
hours making it the perfect home and together they created their Garden
where they spent countless hours each summer. They could often be seen
holding hands as they sat on the deck together surveying their
handiwork. Theirs was a love that grew stronger each day. As one
friend said, ‘When you think of one you can’t help but think on the other’,
because the ‘other’ was usually only a few steps behind.
She is survived by her husband of 68 years, The Reverend Doctor
Benjamin Gee Hines; one son, David Gee Hines and wife, Susan of
Edmond, OK; one daughter, Susan Kennedy and husband, Pat of
Bentonville; four grandchildren, Ben Bogle and wife, Sarah of Sandestin,
FL, Erin Easley and husband, Jason of Gravette, AR, Scott Hines of
Oklahoma City, OK, Megan Gaines and husband, Zac of Edmond, OK; 5
great-grandchildren, Brittney Easley, Lukas Easley, Harper Gaines,
Tatum Gaines, Annie Gaines and many, many dear friends who were
touched by Maxine’s beautiful life.
Memorials may be made to: Bentonville First United Methodist Church
Dorcas Ministry, 201 Northwest 2nd Street, Bentonville, AR 72712 or
the Women’s Shelter, 1622 South 8th Street, Rogers, AR 72756 or to
Havenwood, 808 North Main Street, Bentonville, AR 72712
Visitation will be from 5:00 until 7:00PM, Thursday, June 25, 2015 at
Stockdale-Moody Funeral Services in Rogers.
Funeral Services will be at 12:00 Noon, Friday, June 26, 2015 at First
United Methodist Church in Bentonville with the Reverend Dr. Kurt
Boggan and the Reverend Rex Dickey officiating. Burial will be in the
Bentonville cemetery.
