Mrs. Ruth L. Bratten

Mrs. Ruth Lucille Bratten, 80, of Ozark died May 3, 2000, at her home.

She was a native of Henderson, N. C., widow of Buren F. Bratten, and a nurse.

She is survived by three daughters, Julie Holloway of Ozark, Ann Edwards of Virginia, and Robert Nelson of Alabama; one brother, O. D. Ellis of Henderson, N. C.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

The body was cremated.

Arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Mrs. Wanda Lee Farmer

Mrs. Wanda Lee Farmer, 77, died April 30, 2000, in The Woodlands, Texas.

A native of Clarksville, she was a daughter of the late Jenx Warren and Lula Mae Warren Walters, widow of Lawson Farmer, and former resident of Orlando, Fla.

She is survived by one daughter, Linda Maggard; two grandchildren, Robert Kaufmann and Angela Jacobskind; and three great-grandchildren, Michael Kaufmann, Krista Williams, and Adam Williams.

A memorial service was held at Abundant Life Assembly in The Woodlands, Texas. Arrangements were under the direction of Green Lawn Memorial of The Woodlands, Texas.

Garland M. Hurst

Garland M. Hurst, 86, of Traverse City, Mich., died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, Mich.

He was a native of Coal Hill, son of the late Clarence and Lucy M. Chrisman Hurst, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Valenta M. Hurst; and two brothers, Robert Hurst and Raymond Hurst.

He was a veteran of the U. S. Navy and served in the Seabees during World War II, a former resident of Farmington Hills, Mich., an avid rose gardener, a retired operating engineer and member of Local No. 324, and was instrumental in establishing the UAW Union at General Motors.

Survivors include one son, John R. Hurst of White Lake, Mich.; two daughters, Margaret Quinn of Traverse City, Mich., and Rita Donnelly of Lawrence, Mich.; eight grandchildren, Jennifer Hurst, Carolyn Hurst, Sean Quinn, Devon Quinn, Colin Quinn, Egan Quinn, Jack Donnelly, and Colleen Donnelly; and two great-grandchildren, Nick Donnelly and Casey Donnelly.

A rosary was prayed at 7:30 p.m. Monday, May 22, at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, Mich. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at 3 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at St. Francis Catholic Church with Rev. Father James Gardiner and Rev. Father Kenneth Stachnik serving as celebrants. Burial followed at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan cemetery.

Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or by planting a rose bush in his memory.

Mrs. Helena M. Mize

Mrs. Helena M. Mize, 80, of Lamar died Friday, May 19, 2000, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.

A native of Berea, Ky., she was a daughter of the late James and Anna Parsons Barnett, widow of John Mize, a pianist having played for churches and senior citizens, and was included in the National Geographic Magazine Special Craft edition for her skill in weaving. She was preceded in death by one son, J. W. Metcalf.

Survivors are one daughter, Annabel Smith of Mars Hill, N. C.; one son, B. Daniel Metcalf of Louisville, Ky.; one sister, Nancy Seiller of Spokane, Wash.; several grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, May 23, at the Spadra Methodist Church with Rev. Chris Rink officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

The body was cremated.

Mrs. Maggie Sampley

Mrs. Maggie Sampley, 82, of Alix, mother of Billy Ray Sampley of Hartman, died Tuesday, May 16, 2000, at her home.

A native of Denning, she was a daughter of the late Gomer and Jessie Rice Mayfield, widow of Harley Frank Sampley, and a retired restaurant cook.

She is survived by one other son, Harley Sampley of Bois D Arc, Mo.; two sisters, Imogene Flock of Livingston, Texas, and Mary Irvin of Ankeny, Iowa; one brother, Charley Mayfield of Des Moines, Iowa; four grandchildren, Lisa Sampley of Springfield, Mo., Darren Masterson of Clarksville, Brett Sampley of Knoxville, and Brandon Sampley of Hartman; and four great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 10 a.m. Friday, May 19, at the Alix Assembly of God Church.

Burial was in Highland cemetery at Ozark under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were Irvin Hurtt, Dale Hurtt, Bobby Hurtt, Randy Harris, Johnny Sampley, and Michael Sampley.

Honorary pallbearers were Goldie Workman, Dorothy Golden, Audie Scott and Dina Spitler.

Rena (Liz) Thomas

Rena Elizabeth (Liz) Thomas, 54, of Garnett, Kan., mother of James Larry Yates of Fallsville, died Saturday, May 6, 2000, at Overland Park Regional Medical Center in Overland Park, Kan., from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.

A native of California, Mo., she was a daughter of the late Harry Mitchell and Rena Iola Newton McDowell, a graduate of Adrian (Missouri) High School, a former resident of Butler, Mo., and was preceded in death by one brother, James Mitchell McDowell; two sisters, Sharon Kay Hastings and Norma Jean Ford; and one nephew, Mitchell Wayne.

Other survivors include one daughter, Sharon Yates of Butler, Mo.; one sister, Carol Davis of Belton, Mo.; stepmother, Martha McDowell of Adrian, Mo.; five grandchildren, Kevin Duane Yates and Kolten Dale Yates of Fallsville, Calen Haney Thomas, Jay Thomas, and Steven Thomas of Butler, Mo.; and several nieces and nephews.

Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Wednesday, May 10, at Hickman Masonic cemetery in Clarksburg, Mo., with Ivan Dameron officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Schowengerdt Funeral Chapel of Butler, Mo.

Active pallbearers were Donnie Allen, Marshall Golden, Randy Cantrell, Cole McDowell, Ernie Moore, and Phillip McDowell.

Billy Allen served as an honorary pallbearer.

Thurman T. Foster

Thurman T. Foster, 77, of Hartman died Thursday, May 18, 2000, at his home.

A native of Calico Rock, he was a son of the late Robert (Bob) and Lou Tipton Foster, retired coal miner, member of the Fernwood Assembly of God Church, and was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Ellen Morris Foster.

He is survived by three daughters, Brenda James and Tracy Robinson, both of Hartman, and Marchia Case of Clarksville; two sons, Max Foster of Broken Arrow, Okla., and Bruce Foster of Hartman; one sister, Joyce Walker of Hartman; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, May 22, at the Fernwood Assembly of God Church with Rev. Joe Goodin officiating.

Burial was in Hartman cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.

Active pallbearers were Richard Mays, Larry Guthrie, Greg Morris, Tim Dalton, Allen Walker, and Larry Hogue.

Honorary pallbearers were Richard Dobbs, Blue Zeiler, Mike Jacobs, Ray Johnson, Roy Pannell, and Bob Hurley.
