Joe E. Underwood

Joe E. Underwood, 64, of Coal Hill died Saturday, July 14, 2001, at Clarksville Convalescent Home.
He was a native of Dardanelle, son of the late Otis Buford and Ida Mae Hickey Underwood, retired from the U. S. Air Force after 20 years of service, member of the Coal Hill VFW No. 8532, Retired Enlisted Association, Eagles and the Air Force baseball team for several years. He was preceded in death by his wife, Imogene Underwood; and one daughter, Sarah.
Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Scott and Karen Underwood of Alvin, Texas; one stepson and spouse, Ewell Edward and Linda Lingar of North Little Rock; two stepdaughters and spouse, Wanda and Danny Bush of Clarksville and Rita Wentz of Broken Arrow, Okla.; two grandchildren, Kacy and Amanda Scott of Alvin, Texas; four step grandchildren; and three step great-grandchildren.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, July 18, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Burnett King officiating. Burial will be in Coal Hill cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Dale Lingar, Billy Joe Bush, Don Evans, Glen Bartlett, Seth Hutchins, and Billy Duncan.

Pearlie S. Phillips

Pearlie Stone Phillips, 89, of Russellville died Wednesday, July 11, 2001, at AMI St. Mary's Regional Medical Center in Russellville.
A native of Johnson County, she was a daughter of the late James W. and Ellie Bohannon Stone, and the widow of Guss Phillips.
Survivors include three sons, Quinton Phillips of Russellville, Lee Roy Phillips of Dover, and James W. Phillips of Pottsville; five daughters, Darlene Standridge and Shirley L. Nelson, both of Dover, Betty Jones of Pottsville, Carolyn Woodward of Russellville, and Evelyn Garner of Dardanelle; 25 grandchildren; 34 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Graveside services and burial were at 10 a.m. Friday, July 13, at Rosetta cemetery near Salus. Arrangements were under the direction of Shinn Funeral Service of Russellville.
Grandchildren served as pallbearers.

Albert E. Westover

Albert Edward Westover, 78, of Clarksville died Friday, July 6, 2001, at his home.
He was a native of the Spadra Community, son of the late Carl and Sarah Marie McKinney Westover, a retired coal miner, Navy veteran of World War II, and was preceded in death by his wife, Jacquieta Westover; and one granddaughter, Brittany Holland.
He is survived by one daughter, Carol Holland of Clarksville; one son, Billy Westover of Eudora; one sister, Louise Rigsby of Clarksville; one brother, Tommy Westover of Hartman; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, July 9, at Hardwicke Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Holland and Rev. Bill Holt officiating.
Burial was in Liberty Hill cemetery at Hunt under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Don Hatchett, Will Pizzotti, Danny Rigsby, Johnny Einert, Shannon Kaiser, Jim Rigsby, George Holland, and Kenny Bridgewater.

Helen R. Folkner

Helen Ruth Folkner, 68, of Coal Hill died Monday, July 9, 2001, at St. Edward Mercy Medical Center in Fort Smith.
A native of Coal Hill, she was a daughter of the late Lee and Nona Davis Hatchett, widow of Joe Folkner, member of Denning Methodist Church, and was preceded in death by four sisters, Gussie Bartlett, Gertie Hyde, Robbie Stevenson, and Jean Reynolds; and two brothers, Davis Hatchett and Leonard Hatchett.
Survivors include one son, Samuel Wilkins of Portland, Ore.; four sisters, Melva Hanson and Mildred Newman, both of California, Docha Sperry of Coal Hill and Pauline Mayfield of Clarksville; two grandchildren, Shaun Wilkins and Jimmy Wilkins, both of Portland, Ore.; four great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a special friend, Randy Pruitt of Coal Hill.
The body was cremated.
Local arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the Denning Methodist Church.

Jerry Lynn Tatum

Jerry Lynn Tatum, 60, of Bastrop, La., father of Kevin Wayne Tatum of Clarksville, died Tuesday, July 3, 2001, at Morehouse General Hospital.
He was a member of Cherry Ridge Baptist Church, United States Navy veteran, son of the late E. S. and Mary Tatum, and was preceded in death by one brother, Donald Wayne Tatum.
Other survivors include his widow, Edna Berry Tatum; two daughters, Mary Nero of Cecilia, La., and Tina Troxel of Scranton; two sisters, Pearl DuBose of Arizona and Joy Bryant of Malvern; two brothers, James Tatum of Farmerville, La., and E. S. Tatum Jr. of Arizona; and nine grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at Cherry Ridge Baptist Church in Bastrop, La., with Rev. Charles Dupree and Dr. Charles Weedman officiating.
Burial was in New Forest cemetery at Forest, La., under the direction of Golden Funeral Home of Bastrop, La.
Active pallbearers were Jerry Tomlin, Lynn Sanders, Bill Hunt, Stanley Smith, John Tackett, Bert Morland, and Jerry Goodman.
Honorary pallbearers were Chris Burchell, Kevin Tatum Jr., Shea Nero, and Vernon Tatum.

Lee Wayne Roden

Lee Wayne Roden, 41, of North Charleston, S. C., son of Lois Roden of Knoxville, died Monday, July 9, 2001, in North Charleston, S. C.
He was a mechanic, veteran of the United States Navy, son of the late Carl H. Roden, and of the christian faith.
Other survivors include three brothers and one sister-in-law, Roy A. Roden and Dan R. Roden, both of Knoxville, and Guy L. and Sonja Roden of Fort Irwin, Calif.; two nephews, Brandon Roden and Brian Roden, both of Fort Irwin, Calif.; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
The body was cremated.
Local arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Ralph V. Bray Jr.

Ralph Vaughn Bray Jr., 49, of Russellville, father of Noah Bray of Clarksville, died Wednesday, July 4, 2001.
He was a United States Air Force veteran and son of the late Jeanette and Ralph Bray Sr.
He is survived by one other son, Anthony Bray of Russellville; two daughters, Jennifer Bray of Dover and Laura Bray of Atkins; one sister, Sandra Jones of New Blaine; and two grandchildren, Jeremiah Bray and Danyel Fry.
A celebration of life service was held at 2 p.m. Saturday, July 7, in the chapel of Griffin Leggett Rest Hills in North Little Rock.

Roberta Laster

Graveside services and burial for Roberta Laster, 85, of Tulsa, Okla., formerly of Clarksville, who died Thursday, July 5, 2001, was at 3 p.m. Monday, July 9, at Oakland cemetery in Clarksville with Dr. Robert Brown officiating. A prior service was held at 10 a.m. at Moore's Eastlawn Chapel in Tulsa, Okla. Local arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
She was born on Crow Mountain near Pottsville and was the widow of Boyd Laster.
She is survived by two sons and two daughters-in-law, Billy H. Laster, Jimmy D. and Shirley Laster, and Pat Laster; two daughters and one son-in-law, Patricia A. and Terry Johnson and Linda G. Bates; one sister and brother-in-law, Nettie and Rev. Bob Rackley; nine grandchildren, David Copeland, Brett Johnson, Deanna Laster, Roxann Arvizu, Michelle Fisher, Jeanette Laster, Natisha Elefteriou, Shane Church and Clint Laster; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Roy Pannell Sr.

Roy Elmer Pannell Sr., 85, of Clarksville died Monday, July 2, 2001, at Countryside Manor Nursing Home.
A native of the Montana Community, he was a son of the late William Riley and Maggie Emma Knight Pannell, retired coal miner, member of the United Mine Workers of America and was in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1930s. He was preceded in death by his wife, Maudie Pannell; three brothers, Walter, Jim and Millard Pannell; and two sisters, Bertha Weatherton and Evie Skidgel.
He is survived by four daughters and sons-in-law, Sharon and Wayne Masingale of Shawnee, Kan., Linda and Jim Tipton of Clarksville, Francene and Darrell Freeman of De Soto, Kan., and Peggy and Pat Spindler of Fort Smith; three sons and daughters-in-law, Roy Jr. and Nancy Pannell of Shawnee, Kan., Riley and Vickie Pannell of Lawrence, Kan., and Glen and Sheila Pannell of Shawnee, Kan.; 19 grandchildren; and 39 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 5, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Mike Eppinette officiating. Burial was in the Hays Chapel cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Stephan Spindler, Lanny Tipton, Kipp Masingale, Eric Pannell, Neil Masingale, and Jared Pannell.
Honorary pallbearers were Monte Freeman, Todd Freeman, Will Vinson, Chris Masingale, R. E. Pannell, Tommy Pannell, and Josh Pannell.
