Dr. Elizabeth Nelson
Dr. Elizabeth Buffalo Nelson, 32, of Clarksville died Thursday, March 28, 2002, at her home.
She was a native of Fayetteville, graduate of Carlisle High School, University of Arkansas at Fayetteville, and UAMS in Little Rock, and did her residency at Fort Smith. She was a member of Delta Delta Delta sorority at the University of Arkansas at Fayetteville and a family practice physician at Clarksville Medical Group.
Survivors include her husband, Andy Nelson; two daughters, Lauren Elizabeth Nelson and Alexis Katharin Nelson, both of the home; parents, Richard (Dicky) and Dianne Buffalo of Carlisle; grandparents, Dorothy Buffalo of Carlisle, the late Robert Buffalo, and Bob and Betty Parker of Carlisle; two sisters and one brother-in-law, Suzanne and Brian Bible of Tampa, Fla., and Alexandria Buffalo of Carlisle; and one brother, Richard Buffalo of Carlisle.
Funeral was at noon Tuesday, April 2, at the Church of Christ in Clarksville with Mike Eppinette officiating. Burial followed at 4 p.m. at the Hebron cemetery in Carlisle. Arrangements were under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Pallbearers were Jamey Styles, David Walsh, Kent Reading, Dr. John Dunham, Dr. Ben Jacobs, and Dr. Jack Patterson.
Florence Edgar
Florence Edgar, 72, of Ozark died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Ozark Nursing Home.
A native of Coal Hill, she was a daughter of the late William and Rosie Gilbert Campbell, widow of Darrell Edgar, and Pentecostal.
Survivors include four daughters, Betty Ferguson and Nora Severson, both of Mulberry, and Cathern Parker and Mary Heginger, both of Mountainburg; six sons, Eugene Wiggins of Van Buren, Andy Edgar of North Vernon, Ind., James Edgar of Ozark, Darrell Edgar of Mulberry, and Joe and Bobby Edgar, both of Mountainburg; one sister, Lucy Sampley of Altus; two brothers, Jim Campbell of Greenwood and Floyd Campbell of Spiro, Okla.; 30 grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Houston cemetery at Alix with Rev. Ken Turpin officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
George W. Brumley
Graveside services and burial for George Washington Brumley, 100, who died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Ozark Nursing Home, was at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at Lone Pine cemetery with Rev. Daniel Kesterson officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Shaffer Funeral Home of Ozark.
Pallbearers were Ronnie Morris, Jack Morris, James Dickerson, Charles Dickerson, George Carter, Charles Bangs, Ken Hatfield, Jim Pipkin, Rex Anderson, and Darrell Perry.
A native of Mountain Top, he was a son of the late Elijah and Maude Aitchison Brumley, farmer, Baptist, and was preceded in death by his wife, Flossie Mitchell Brumley; two sisters, Shirley Green and Reba Watts; and two sons, Millard Dale Brumley and J. W. Brumley.
Survivors include two daughters, Irene Sutherland and Doris Dickerson, both of Ozark; 11 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
Hermina R. Koerdt
Hermina Rinke Koerdt, 62, of Altus died Wednesday, March 27, 2002, at her home.
A native of Altus, she was a daughter of the late Herman and Louise Rissie Rinke, widow of Jerome Koerdt, member of Saint Mary's Catholic Church at Altus, 1957 graduate of Altus-Denning High School, graduate of Saint Edward Nursing School, registered nurse, and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagle.
She is survived by two daughters, Sonita Pledger and Mikala Hudson, both of Altus; two brothers, Gerald Rinke of Altus and Leon Rinke of West Helena; and five grandchildren, Jeremy Pledger, Michael Pledger, Andrew Hudson, Nathan Hudson, and Patrick Hudson, all of Altus.
Rosary was at 7 p.m. Sunday, March 31, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel. Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, April 1, at Saint Mary's Catholic Church with Rev. Hillary Filiatreau, O.S.B., officiating. Burial was at Saint Mary's Catholic cemetery.
Pallbearers were Eddie McCormick, Mike Jones, Fred Holloway, James Dahlem, Dewayne Freeman, and Tim Pledger.
Irene Moffit
Irene Moffit, 72, of Alix, sister of Homer Qualls of Clarksville, died Thursday, March 21, 2002, at Mercy Hospital/Turner Memorial in Ozark.
She was a member of the Alix Assembly of God Church, native of Alix, and daughter of the late William and Bessie Scribner Qualls.
Survivors include her husband, Raymond Moffit; four sons, Virgil Moffit and Clifford Moffit, both of Alix, Edmond Moffit of Ozark, and Paul Moffit of the home; one sister, Estelle Harmon of Altus; one other brother, Harold Qualls of Ozark; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, March 25, at Shaffer Funeral Home Chapel in Ozark with Rev. C. E. Simpson officiating. Burial was in Houston cemetery at Alix.
Active pallbearers were David Ellison, Daniel Moffit, Brian Moffit, Tom McCormick, Eddie McCormick, and Brian McCormick.
Honorary pallbearers were Dustin Moffit, Christopher Moffit and Andrew Day.
William (Billy) Cowell
William (Billy) Cowell, 75, of Clarksville died Tuesday, March 26, 2002, at his home.
He was a retired Holiday Sand and Gravel employee, Army veteran, member of the Coal Hill VFW, and son of the late James John and Melissa Reufina Breedlove Cowell.
Survivors are his widow, Catherine Louise Guther Cowell; four daughters, Willena Calvin and Debra Cox, both of Gravois Mills, Mo., Karen Warner of Stover, Mo., and Theresa Henderson of Clarksville; seven sons, William I. Cowell Jr. of Cisero, Ill., John Cowell of Lamar, Donnie Guinnip of Kansas City, Kan., Ricky Guinnip of the home, Dale Guinnip of Paris, Michael Guinnip of Clarksville, and Jerrold Cowell of Lamar; one brother, James (Jimmy) Cowell of Hartman; 23 grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
Graveside services and burial were at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 28, at the Annie's Chapel cemetery with Rev. Terry Schlinker officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Arley M. Bailey
Graveside services and burial for Arley M. Bailey, 76, who died Wednesday, March 20, 2002, in Mannford, Okla., were at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 23, at the Sherrellville cemetery following a service at 10 a.m. at Mark Griffith Memorial Funeral Home-Riverside Chapel in Sand Springs, Okla. Rev. Dan Larremore officiated.
He was a native of Estelene, Texas, member of Christian Renewal Church in Sapulpa, Okla., and owner of Arley's Pest Control.
Survivors are his widow, Mary Sherrell Bailey of the home, formerly of Johnson County; one son and daughter-in-law, Clint and Marsha Bailey of Mannford, Okla.; one brother, Jim Crawford of Sapulpa, Okla.; one sister, Shirley Lee of Bristow, Okla.; six grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
Col. Bill Hightower Sr.
Retired Air Force Col. John William (Bill) Hightower Sr., 62, died March 7, 2002.
He was a son of the late Martha Raye Shores Hightower, 1958 graduate of Ardmore (Oklahoma) High School, and obtained a bachelor of arts degree from the University of the Ozarks in Clarksville and a master's degree in business administration from the University of Southern Mississippi.
He served 28 years plus in the United States Air Force, was a senior commander pilot, served tours of duty in Vietnam, Japan, Philippines and Korea, and was the Air Force attache for the U. S. Embassy in Lima, Peru. He was awarded the distinguished flying cross with two oak leaf clusters, defense meritorious service medal with three oak leaf clusters, air medal with 21 bronze stars, Air Force commendation medal with one oak leaf cluster, Army commendation medal, distinguished presidential unit citation with three oak leaf clusters, joint meritorious unit medal, Vietnam campaign medal, Vietnam service medal with six bronze stars and the legion of merit. Upon his retirement, he returned to Ardmore where he served as the executive director with the Ardmore Main Street Authority.
He was a member of the Military Order of Daedalions, past president of Southern Oklahoma Retired Officers Association, Rotary Club, Mason, Defense Intelligence Agency Alumni, and the Confederate Air Force.
Survivors are his widow, Deanne Roring Hightower; two sons, James Quinton and John William Hightower Jr., both of Ardmore, Okla.; two daughters and one son-in-law, Lori Elizabeth Hightower of Ardmore, Okla., and Amy Rayeanne and Billy Jack Eaves of Wilson, Okla.; one grandson, Billy Jack Eaves Jr. of Wilson, Okla.; father, Quinton Hightower of Duncan, Okla.; one brother, Robert Hightower of Little Rock; aunt, Elizabeth Murphy of Ardmore, Okla.; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral was at 2 p.m. Tuesday, March 12, at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Gorrell officiating. Burial with military honors was at Rose Hill cemetery under the direction of Harvey-Douglas Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.
Billy Middleton
Billy Middleton, 30, of Clarksville died Sunday, March 24, 2002, in Garden City, Ga.
He was a native of Russellville, steel construction commercial building employee, and was preceded in death by his grandparents, Rosie and Dena Middleton; and one sister, Michele Denise Middleton.
Survivors include his widow, Wendy Suzanne Middleton; one daughter, Shelli Middleton of Roland, Okla.; one son, Slade Middleton of Clarksville; parents, John and Anna Myers of London and William and Paula Middleton of Yukon, Okla.; grandparents, Harvey and Faye Severn of Decatur; sister and brother-in-law, Debra and Bill England of Oklahoma City, Okla.; one brother, Michael Middleton of Yukon, Okla., and father-in-law and mother-in-law, James and Debra Decker of Clarksville.
Funeral will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 30, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. Wayne Drain officiating. Burial will be in Hess cemetery at Coal Hill.
Pallbearers will be David Lee Dunlap, R. D. Dunlap, Michael Lee Shepherd, Larry James Smith, Jody Smith, Jimmy Jack Butler, David Bruce Dunlap Jr., Daniel Wayne Dunlap Jr., and Andy Butler.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Friday, March 29, at Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Coyle E. James
Coyle E. James, 80, of Gravois Mills, Mo., died Monday, March 18, 2002, at his home.
He was a son of the late Luther James and Byance Phelps James, Army veteran of World War II, member of Hartman Lodge, and General Motors Corporation employee.
Survivors include his widow, Pauline Fetters James; three daughters, Jo Ann Cole of Hartman, Kathryn Macial of Kansas City, Mo., and Jeanne James of Gravois Mills, Mo.; two sons, Paul James of Kansas City, Mo, and Coyle James Jr. of DeSoto, Kan.; two sisters, Reesie Patterson and Laquita Hanik, both of Clarksville; one brother, Fred James of Benton, Ky.; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Memorial graveside services, masonic rites, and burial were at 11 a.m. Friday, March 22, at Hartman cemetery with Rev. Bill Usery officiating. Local arrangements were under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
