Mary Jane Lewis
Mary Jane Lewis, 64, of Knoxville died Saturday, Sept. 14, 2002, at her home.
She was a native of Powhattan, Kan., daughter of the late John and Mary Elizabeth Lonny Osborne, graduate of Powhattan High School, and retired employee of Sara Lee Hosiery in Clarksville.
She is survived by two daughters, Stacy Lynne Shelton of Wickenburg, Ariz., and Beth Faye Heath of McAlester, Okla.; one son, Wesley Wayne Lewis of Phoenix, Ariz.; five sisters; four brothers; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Memorial graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 21, at Memorial Park cemetery in St. Joseph, Mo., under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Vincent Gorton
Vincent Gorton, 77, of Fort Smith, formerly of Clarksville, died Thursday, Sept. 12, 2002.
A native of White Plains, N. Y., he was a longtime resident of Tulsa, Okla., employed by Sunray DX as a chief draftsman prior to retiring after 30 years of service, served in World War II and was the recipient of numerous medals while serving in India. He was preceded in death by his wife, Jackie Gorton.
Survivors include one son, John Gorton of Mulberry; one daughter, Susan Doepel of Oklahoma City, Okla.; and one grandson, Jason Doepel.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
B. W. Castleberry
B. W. Castleberry, 77, of Lamar died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Baptist Health Medical Center in Little Rock.
He was a native of Johnson County, son of the late Burl and Laura Dillahunty Castleberry, 1942 graduate of Clarksville High School, member of Lamar United Methodist Church, co-owner of Castleberry Brothers Grocery Store in Lamar for 37 years prior to retiring, member of the Pittsburg Masonic Lodge No. 362 at Lamar, a 32nd degree Mason, former mayor of Lamar from 1955-1963 during which time he was instrumental in obtaining city water for the town in early 1960, and was preceded in death by one sister, Hazel Wofford.
Survivors include his widow, Wanda Farris Castleberry; one daughter, Sandra Welborn of Maumelle; one son, Steve Castleberry of Lake Charles, La.; one sister, Lottie Snow of Fort Smith; one brother, Dean Castleberry of Russellville; and four grandchildren, David Welborn of Denver, Colo., Jennifer Welborn Manning of Benton, Milah Castleberry Phillips of Weatherford, Texas, and Megan Castleberry of Lake Charles, La.
Funeral was at 2 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 5, at Hardwicke Funeral Chapel with Rev. J. Michael Thurman officiating. Burial was in Lamar cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Lloyd Reynolds, George Overbey Jr., Leon Bacchus, Rick Harmon, Frank Nordin, Leland Nordin, Glen Crotts, and Buddy Rogers.
Honorary pallbearers were Jim Birkhahn, Gary Sparks, and Harmon Jackson.

Carl D. Godfrey
Carl Dan Godfrey, 75, of Booneville died Friday, Sept. 6, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
He was a retired laborer and a member of the Assembly of God Church.
Survivors include his widow, Leona Godfrey; two sisters, Claudine Scharbour and Patsy Wilson, both of Booneville; and two brothers, Raymond and Damon, both of Fort Smith.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 9, at Roberts Memorial Chapel with burial in Lick Creek cemetery near Booneville.
Active pallbearers were nephews, Daniel, Damon, Eric, and Derick Godfrey, Paul White and Gary Scharbour.
Honorary pallbearers were Roy Lewis, Vernon Jones, J. D. Cooper, and Waymon Nelms.
Dimples Goodin
Dimples Goodin, 83, of Clarksville died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at her home.
She was a member of the Church of the Nazarene, widow of Charlie R. Goodin, daughter of the late Walter and Florence Lee Scott Sanders, and was preceded in death by two brothers, Sam and Bud Sanders; and two great-grandchildren.
She is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles L. and Ervine Goodin of Clarksville and Melvin and Ceclia Goodin of American Falls, Idaho; two sisters, Sis Wofe of Riggins, Idaho, and Babe Fuszon of Lamar, Colo.; one brother, Peck Sanders of Denning; six grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 10, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Glen Newton officiating. Burial was in West Mt. Zion cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Paul Goodin, Scott Goodin, Grant Goodin, Nick Yarbrough, Chris Yarbrough, and Chase Yarbrough.
Honorary pallbearers were Blake Yarbrough, Aaron Yarbrough, and John Goodin.
Ernest G. Carter
Ernest Gene Carter, 70, of Clarksville died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, at Countryside Manor Nursing Home.
He was a son of the late Riley and Lillie Sampley Carter and a Baptist.
Survivors are two daughters, Carolyne Ann Jones of Cane Hill and Debra Jane Young of North Little Rock; two grandchildren, Dustan Carter and Cody Young; one sister, Helen Burch of Clarksville; and two brothers, Kenneth Carter and Wayne Carter, both of Clarksville.
Graveside services and burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at the Houston cemetery in Alix with Rev. Amos Pledger officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Hazel L. Highfill
Hazel L. Highfill, 72, of Hartman died Tuesday, Sept. 3, 2002, at Arkansas Hospice Center.
She was a daughter of the late Johnnie and Mandy Clark Jones, member of the Center Point Missionary Baptist Church, retired Nite Lite employee, and a volunteer for the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary.
Survivors include her husband, Julius Highfill; one daughter, Sheena Pruett of Springdale; one son, Terry Highfill of Ozark; one sister, Evleen Gipson of Kansas City, Kan.; three brothers, Ulus Jones and Elmer (Dude) Jones, both of Clarksville, and James Jones of Tahlequah, Okla.; and four grandchildren, Andy Highfill of Ozark, Kris Pruett of Las Vegas, Nev., Shondra Pruett of Springdale, and Toby Highfill of Maryville, Mo.
Funeral was at 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 6, at Center Point Missionary Baptist Church with Rev. Earl Sutton officiating.
Burial was in Kendall cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Mike Pruett, Gary Jacobs, Josh Robertson, Harlen Nichols, Philip Taylor, and Larry Robertson.
Honorary pallbearers were Keith Pipkins, Don Highfill, Thurman Gipson, James Gould, and Justin Robertson.
John Wood Jr.
John Wood Jr., 70, of Fresno, Calif., brother of Ed Wood Sr. of Clarksville, died June 29, 2002.
He was a native of Altus and son of the late John and Elsie Powell Wood.
Survivors include three daughters; one stepson; three other brothers, Bill, Paul and Harry, all of Arkansas; and several nieces and nephews.
The body was cremated.
Keith Hurst
Keith Hurst, 45, of Houston, Texas, formerly of Coal Hill, died Wednesday, Aug. 28, 2002, at his home.
He was a native of Topeka, Kan., son of the late Tommy Dean Hurst, grandson of the late Mart Wesley and Della Bray Hurst of Coal Hill and the late Jerald and Agnes Zolliecoffer Hampton of Altus, auditor for Jefferson Wells in Houston, Texas, graduate of Northside High School in Fort Smith and the University of Arkansas, and a Baptist.
Survivors are one son, Jeffrey Shawn Young of O'Fallon, Mo.; mother, Geraldine Hampton Hurst of Fort Smith, formerly of the Coal Hill and Altus areas, three brothers, Marty Hurst of Van Buren, Steve Hurst of Greenwood, and Wesley Hurst of Fort Smith, and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins in the local area.
Funeral was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 4, at Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith with Rev. Kemp Holden officiating. Graveside services and burial followed at 1 p.m. at the Hess cemetery near Coal Hill.
Pallbearers were Mitch Bogan, Perry Ray, Danny Beam, Danny Likens, Rick Brown, and Stanley Douglas.
Cheryl Leanne Lucas
Cheryl Leanne Lucas, 34, of Claremore, Okla., and her husband, Shannon Dean Lucas, died Sunday, Sept. 8, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
She was the granddaughter of Josie Horton of Coal Hill, native of Helena, attended school in Oologah, Okla., and business school at Career Point in Tulsa, Okla., and was employed at Commercial Resins in Tulsa, Okla., for a number of years and at Albertson's Distribution Center as secretary of transportation for the past two years.
Other survivors include one son, Zachary Lane Harader of Claremore, Okla.; parents, James and Patsy Pierce Keith of Claremore, Okla.; one sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Jeff Blan of Claremore, Okla.; one niece, Katelyn Blan of Claremore, Okla.; and one nephew, Hayden Blan of Claremore, Okla.
Funeral will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 11, at First Baptist Church in Claremore, Okla., with burial in Woodlawn cemetery under the direction of Rice Funeral Service.
