Patricia A. Mattas

Patricia A. Mattas, 40, of Knoxville died Tuesday, July 9, 2002, from injuries sustained in a two-vehicle accident on Highway 64 in Knoxville.
She was a nurse.
Survivors are two sons, Raul Rios of Clarksville and Jamie Rios of Knoxville; parents, Thomas Patrick Mattas of Mt. Clemens, Mich., and Betty Jo McCartney of New Haven, Mich.; one sister, Debra Mayek of Hudson, Wis.; three brothers, Timothy Mattas of Port Huron, Mich., and David Mattas and Jeremy McCartney, both of Altus; one grandchild, Baylee Adison Rios; and fiance, Nolden Thrift of Knoxville.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 13, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Mark Soucy officiating.

Roy D. Callaham

Roy D. Callaham, 67, of Lamar died Wednesday, July 10, 2002, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
He was a disabled Navy veteran, son of the late James A. and Nora Mae Crotts Callaham, and was preceded in death by his wife, Wanda Callaham; one stepson, Anthony G. Ross; three sisters, Viola P. Zahn, Irma Hendrixson, and Billie Jean Martin; and one brother, Leon Callaham.
Survivors include three daughters and sons-in-law, Cynthia and Steve Snodgrass and Valarie and Ronnie Grover, all of Lamar, and Judi and Phillip Conway of Vilonia; two stepdaughters and spouses, Teresia and Darrell Wadley of Lamar and Sydney and Bill Case of Knoxville; one stepson and spouse, Bill and Cindy Ross of Orlando, Fla.; two sisters, Izola Drittler of Lamar and Betty Peterson of Oark; one brother, Vincent Callaham of Dewitt; 11 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral was at 11 a.m. Monday, July 15, at Lamar Baptist Church with Rev. Clyde Vire officiating.
Burial was in Lamar cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Steve Snodgrass, Phillip Conway, Roy Callaham Jr., Garry Garrison Sr., Ronnie Grover, and Wesley Snodgrass.
Honorary pallbearers were Darrell Wadley, Jason Wadley, Mike Berg, Bill Case, Bill Ross, Bob Duff, and Faith Full Gospel.

John Bulza Jr.

John Bulza Jr., 74, of Portage, Ind., died Friday, July 5, 2002, in Portage, Ind.
He was a golf pro at Gleason Park, Turkey Creek, Indian Ridge and Bay Ridge golf courses, a PGA member since 1972, investigator for the Portage Township Trustee, served in the U. S. Navy, member of the Evergreen Memorial Baptist Church and was employed for E. J. and E. Railroad and U. S. Steel Gary Division.
Survivors include two sisters, Esther Wilson of Valparaiso, Ind., and Mrs. Richard (Beverly) Knoernschild of Lamar; one brother, Peter Bulza of Fontana, Calif.; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
Graveside services and burial will be at 5 p.m. Thursday, July 11, at St. Paul's cemetery at Lutherville under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Memorials may be made to Evergreen Memorial Baptist Church, 3900 Montgomery Street, Hobart, IN 46342.

Joshua W. Warren

Joshua Wayne McCarley Warren, 2, of London, died Tuesday, July 2, 2002.
He was a grandson of the late Potsy Warren and William Wayne Hale, and great-grandson of John F. McCarley.
Survivors are his parents, Vernon Gerrel and Helen Sue Sears Warren of London and William Gregory and Lillian Alice McCarley of Clarksville; four brothers, Frankie Sears and William Gregory McCarley Jr., both of Clarksville, Jackson Fox of Hackett and Lawrence Fox of Russellville; two sisters, Jamelyn Chesser and Brenna McCarley, both of Clarksville; grandparents, Terry and Brenda Johnson of New Blaine, Billy Horace McCarley of Lamar, Polly Warren of Flat Rock, and Mattie Hale Gray of Lamar; and great-grandparents, Eva Sears of Lamar, Frank and Ann Sears of Hartman, Margaret McCarley of Lamar, and Bill and Edna Woods of Clarksville; and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Friday, July 5, at Roller-Cox Chapel with Rev. Don Alexander and Rev. Amos Pledger officiating. Burial was in Lamar cemetery.
Active pallbearers were Fred Parker, Rickey Parker, Earl Sanderson, and Terry Johnson.
Honorary pallbearers were Frankie Sears, Jackson Fox, Lawrence Fox, and William Gregory McCarley Jr.

Karron K. Simmons

Karron Kaye McCarty Simmons, 62, of Deer died Sunday, July 7, 2002, at her home.
She was a daughter of the late Everett W. and Alice F. Westwood McCarty.
Survivors include her husband, Floyd Wyman Simmons; two daughters, Diana Simmons of Fayetteville and Linda Laughter of Hindsville; three sons, Randy Simmons of Nixa, Mo., Rick Simmons of Hindsville, and Everett Simmons of Springdale; two sisters, Sharron Trunole of Independence, Mo., and Pamela Bellamy of Jasper; two brothers, Kenny McCarty of Lee's Summit, Mo., and David McCarty of Oakland Park, Kan.; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 11, at the Nail Church with Rev. Bobby Young officiating.
Burial will be in the Nail Grove cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Pallbearers will be Brad Taylor, Matthew Taylor, Jamie Don Patrick, Terry Carney, Gary Carney, and James Carney.
Visitation will be from 7-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Roller-Cox Funeral Home.

Larry L. Bock

Larry L. Bock, 51, of Plainview died Wednesday, June 12, 2002, in Roanoke, Va., at Carilion Memorial Hospital.
A native of Little Sioux, Iowa, he was a 1969 graduate of Missouri Valley (Iowa) High School, formerly with the fire and rescue unit in Missouri Valley, Iowa, employee of LTJ Trucking Company of Russellville, member of the Ascension Life Christian Fellowship Church in Danville and past caretaker of Salem cemetery in Plainview.
Survivors are his widow, Mary Esther Hatcher Bock; one daughter and son-in-law, Vickie and Steve Rogers of Clarksville; foster daughter, Ruth Douglas of Plainview; grandchildren, Christine Rogers and Amber Rogers of Clarksville; foster grandchildren, Joshua Douglas and Andrew Douglas of Plainview; parents, Albert and Catherine Bock of Iowa; great-grandmother, Gertude Edmonds of Iowa; brother and sister-in-law, Patrick and Cathy Bock of Florida; sister and brother-in-law, Barbara and Mike Schmitz of Iowa; and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral was at 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 3, at the Jesus Name Pentecostal Church with Rev. Gary Garner and Rev. Stacy Lisenbey officiating.
Burial was in Salem cemetery at Plainview under the direction of Cornwell Funeral Home of Danville.
Memorials may be made to local fire departments or the charity of the donor's choice.

Lucindia Cowell

Lucindia Cowell, 76, of Ceres, Calif., died June 13, 2002, in Ceres, Calif.
A native of Lamar, she was a daughter of the late T. E. and Rose Parsons, widow of Claude Cowell, and was preceded in death by two sisters, Ruby Wyatt and Lelia Childress; and one brother, John Parsons.
Survivors are three daughters, Shirley Looney of Edwards, Calif., and Claudia Krocher and Cynthia Rose, both of Ceres, Calif.; three sons, Edd Cowell, Michael Cowell and Kevin Cowell, all of Ceres, Calif.; three sisters, Lucille Fetters of Lindsay, Calif., Alma Galentine of Abilene, Texas, and Maxine Nordin of London; two brothers, Everett Parsons and Edward Parsons, both of Lamar; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Funeral was June 17 at Lake-
wood Funeral Home in Ceres, Calif., with Chaplain Adrian Condit officiating. Burial was in Hillcrest Garden at Lakewood Memorial Park in Hughson, Calif.
Grandsons served as pallbearers.

Samuel J. Martin Jr.

Samuel Jason Martin Jr., 17, of Clarksville died Sunday, July 7, 2002, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident in Pope County.
He was a member of Stillwell Bible Baptist Church and preceded in death by great-grandparents, Marvin Bean, Realon Bean, Walter Mooney and Bonnie Mooney.
Survivors are his parents, Linda Carol Mooney Martin of Clarksville and Samuel Jason Martin Sr. of St. Joseph, Mo.; one sister, Misty Dawn Mooney of Clarksville; and grandparents, Wanda Mooney of Clarksville, Dean Mooney of Clarksville, Charles Martin of Joy and Emma Martin of Missouri.
Funeral will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 10, at Stillwell Bible Baptist Church with Rev. Jim Goodman officiating.
Burial will be in Lone Pine cemetery under the direction of Roller-Cox Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers will be Jeffrey Mooney, Mathew Mooney, Anthony Hendrix, Mark Mooney, Michael Mooney, and Matt Burkett.
Friends will serve as honorary pallbearers.

W. E. (Gene) Ballew

W. E. (Gene) Ballew, 69, of Clarksville died Saturday, July 6, 2002, at Johnson Regional Medical Center.
A native of Athens, Tenn., he was a son of the late Jesse and Letress Morgan Ballew, member of First United Methodist Church and Fellowship Sunday School Class, Franklin Lodge No. 9, past High Priest of Royal Arch, 32nd degree Mason of the Fort Smith Consistory, member and past patron of Clarksville Chapter No. 172 Order of the Eastern Star, charter member of the Arkansas Masonic Camping Club, and spent 19 years in the U. S. Army before retiring in 1969 as sergeant first class. He served in both the Korean War and Vietnam War and was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal, two Purple Hearts, the Army Commendation Medal with five hoops, Good Conduct Medal, National Defense Service Medal, two Army Occupation from Germany, Korean Service Medal with three stars, Vietnam Service Medal with four stars, United Nations Service, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Korean Presidental Citation, Vietnam Presidential Citation, Combat Infantryman Badge, and South Korea Service Medal. He was preceded in death by three brothers, Roy, Harlan and Dennis Ballew.
Survivors include his widow, Anna Lou Goodwin Ballew; one daughter, Julie Geisler of Greenwood; one son, Michael Ballew of Fort Smith; one sister, Joy Snider of Athens, Tenn.; six brothers, Larry Ballew, Sam Ballew, J. R. Ballew, Raymond Ballew, and Odus Ballew, all of Athens, Tenn., and Max Ballew of Jacksonville; and one grandchild, Jessy Ballew of Fort Smith.
Funeral was at 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 9, at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Wingo officiating.
Burial was in Oakland cemetery under the direction of Hardwicke Funeral Home.
Active pallbearers were Jack Cecil, Claud Dougan, Don Peters, Dayne Phillips, Bill Porter, Robert Smith, Billy Willis, and Pat Blackard.
Honorary pallbearers were Stewart Willey, Ben Phillips, Phillip Jacobs, Harold Johnson, John Payne, Robert Bartlett, Bill Hewitt, and Harry McCracken.
