Mildred Alleene Cox
Mildred Alleene Cox, age 72, of Forrest City, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Crestpark Nursing Home in Forrest City.
She was born June 5, 1927, in Colt and was the daughter of Claude Dill and Hattie Matlock. She lived in Forrest City all of her life and was a housewife. She was a member of the Beck Spur Baptist Church.
She married Chloral C. Cox on 1949 and he preceded her in death in 1989. She is survived by one daugther, Judy Nelson of Forrest City; two sisters, Lavonne Adkisson of Wynne and Mary Burnett of Forrest City; two grandchildren and one great grandchild.
Funeral services will be held at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel on Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at 10 a.m. with Rev. Bill Thomason officiating. Burial will follow in Hughes Cemetery in Forrest City. Visitation will be held Monday, Sept. 13, 1999, from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home.
Memorials may be sent to the Second Baptist Church.
Rev. Edward C. Rountree
Rev. Edward C. Rountree Sr., age 79, of Forrest City, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home.
He was born Oct. 25, 1919, in Pine Bluff, and was the son of Wiley C. Rountree and Geraldine Clark Rountree. He lived in Forrest City since 1942, serving churches in the area and pursuing a career as a postal employee. He attended Phillips University in Enid, Okla. and Vanderbilt University Divinity School in Nashville, Tenn. and the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor. He served churches in Oklahoma, Kentucky and Arkansas.
He married Jane Waterman and she survives him along with two sons, Edward Rountree Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. and Tom Rountree of of Forrest City; one daughter, Martha Gaines of Forrest City; two sisters, Gerry Ragland of Fayetteville and Winifred Rogers of Tucson, Ariz.; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at Graham Memorial Presbyterian Church at 7 p.m., Monday, Sept. 13, 1999 with Stevens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Sylvester Garrett
Sylvester Garrett, age 80, of Moro, died Sunday, Sept. 12, 1999, at his home.
He was a retired farmer.
He is survived by his wife, Laurntean Garrett of Moro; four sons, Sterling Garrett of Little Rock, Mearlen Garrett of North Little Rock, Glennvester Garrett of Country Club Hill, Ill. and Freeman Garrett of Aliso Viejo, Calif.; six daughters, Myrtle Paige of Forrest City, Geraldine Garrett, Arcola Beasley and Merida Samori, all of Little Rock, Claudie Phillips of Burr Ridge, Ill. and Sandra Hendred of Ottumwa, Iowa; one sister, Mable Steppes of Moro; ten grandchildren, four step-grandchildren and three great grandchildren.
A family hour will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Branscumb Funeral Home in Brinkley. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 16, 1999, at the funeral home with burial following in Garrett Grove Cemetery under the direction of Branscumb Funeral Home.
Ruby Gowder
Ruby Gowder, age 78, of Colt, died Saturday, Sept. 11, 1999, at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
She was born Feb. 15, 1921 in Jericho, Ark. and was a farmer.
She is survived by two sons, Johnny Gowder and James Odell Jackson, both of Detroit, Mich.; four daughters, Wyvonie Cooper of Detroit, Darlene Jackson Gowder of Colt, Jeanette Jackson and Debra Ann Jackson, both of Detroit; two brothers, James Lacy of Detroit and Odean Lacy, of St. Louis, Mo.; four sisters, Magnolia Sain of Detroit, Lillie Harris of Memphis, Pauline Stegall of Colt and Francis Lucas of St. Louis; 17 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, at Clay Funeral Home from 10:30 a.m. until 5 p.m. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at Clay Funeral Home with Pastor William Hall officiating. Burial will follow in Stanley Grove Cemetery under the direction of Clay Funeral Home.
ODell Jenkins
ODell Jenkins, age 83, of Forrest City, died Tuesday, Sept. 14, 1999, at Crestpark Skilled Nursing Home.
She was born Aug. 26, 1916, in Forrest City and was the daughter of Henson Carson and Hattie Powell Coleman.
She is survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Visitation will be held Friday, Sept. 17, 1999, from 12 noon until 5 p.m. at Woodhouse Mortuary Chapel. Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 18, 1999, at 12 noon at Woodhouse Mortuary Chapel with Rev. Leon Sims officiating. Burial will follow in Forrest City Cemetery under the direction of Woodhouse Mortuary.
Inez Kirkland
Inez Kirkland, age 70, of Forrest City, died Wednesday, Sept. 15, 1999, at Methodist Hospital in Memphis.
She was born July 25, 1929, and was the daughter of Robert and Ada Haggans of Colt. She was a lifelong resident of St. Francis County and Forrest City. She was a member of the Salem Missionary Baptist Church, and was a retired traffic officer with the Forrest City Police Department, having served for 25 years.
She is survived by three daughters, Gloria Madden, Barbara Kirkland and Carolyn K. Sattiewhite, all of Forrest City; two brothers, O.B. Haggans of St. Louis, Mo. and Murphy Gregory of Forrest City; five sisters, Lucille Seldon of Youngstown, Ohio, Josephine Drakes of Chicago, Ill., Cloraine Jones of St. Louis, Mo., Carmilla Haggans of Hannibal, Mo., and Evelyn Madden of Chicago; nine grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Cleveland Kirkland in 1984.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Sept. 20, 1999, at 1 p.m. at Salem Missionary Baptist Church in Forrest City with Rev. Felix Duckworth officiating. Burial will follow in Forrest City Cemetery under the direction of Morgan Funeral Home.
Barbara Louise Cottrell
Barbara Louise Cottrell, aged 53, of Forrest City, died Wednesday, Sept. 14, 1999 at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
She was born March 3, 1946, and was a homemaker.
Ms. Cottrell is survived by her father, Jack Cottrell of Forrest City; two daughters, Martine Cottrell and Tanya Cottrell, both of Forrest City, two brothers, James Cottrell of Forrest City and Robert C. Lee of Little Rock; and a sister, Arnell Demison of Oakland, Calif.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, Sept. 18 at the Church of the Living God, with Rev. M.T. Dedner officiating. Burial will follow at Casteel Cemetery, under the direction of Clay Funeral Home.
Ronnie "Fire Ball" Finney
Ronnie "Fire Ball" Finney, age 51, of Forrest City, died Friday, Aug. 27, 1999, at the Med in Memphis.
He was the son of Sammie Finney and Clara Johnson Finney.
Mr. Finney is survived by two daughters, Loretta Byndom and Debar Humphrey, both of Forrest City; a sister, Ruth Ann Tabor of Forrest City and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be from 10:30 a.m. until 5:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 3 at Woodhouse Mortuary. Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 4 at Saint's Temple Church of God in Christ, with Elder Lewis Bingham officiating. Burial will follow in Casteel Cemetery, under the direction of Woodhouse Mortuary.
Oscie Hardy
Mr. Oscie Hardy, age 84, of Forrest City, died today at Crestpark Retirement Inn in Forrest City. He had been in poor health for the past four months.
He was born Feb. 18, 1915 in St. Francis County, the son of Wallace Hardy and Myrtle Price Hardy. He lived in St. Francis County all his life, was a retired farmer, an active member of the Madison Methodist Church, vice president of the Forrest City Rural Water Works Association, former president of the Forrest City Gin Co., and served 25 years as a board member of A.S.C.S.
In 1937, Mr. Hardy married Mary Myers Hardy. She survives him along with a half sister, several nieces and nephews and several close friends.
Services for Mr. Hardy will be held at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 4, with burial in Forrest Park Cemetery. The Rev. Norm Moyer will officiate, assisted by the Rev. David Brantley. Visitation will be Friday from 5:30 to 7 p.m., with Stevens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Eunice Beck Hemphill
Eunice Beck Hemphill, age 80, of Hughes, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, in West Memphis.
She was born March 9, 1919, in Forrest City, to Earnest and Nora Beck. She was a bookkeeper for the Hughes Furniture Center, and was a member of the Hughes United Methodist Church.
She married Earl Hemphill in 1941, and he preceded her in death in 1953. She is survived by one niece, Carey Goacher of Hughes.
Visitation will be held Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. on Friday, Sept. 3, 1999, at the First United Methodist Church in Hughes with burial to follow in Forrest Park Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
