Bertha Lee "Memama" Summar
Bertha Lee "Memama" Summar, age 95, of Angleton, Texas, died Thursday, March 9, 2000.
She was born June 20, 1904, in Henderson County, Tenn., to Henry Rust and Harriet Dodd Rust. Mrs. Summar was a retired cosmetologist, a member of the First Baptist Church of Lake Jackson and an active member of the Adult I Sunday school class.
On August 9, 1924, she married Vernon Bennett Groves, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her daughter, Elwanda Groves Painter of Crystal Lake, Ill., and her son, Eddie Alfred Groves of Lake Jackson, Texas.
She is survived by two sisters, Ida Lee Whittenton of Forrest City, and Bessie Burt of Memphis, Tenn.; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
Graveside services were held today, Monday, March 13, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the Angleton Cemetery. Rev. John Hatch will officiate and Palms Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Ricky L. Vick
Ricky L. Vick, age 49, of Faulkner, Miss., died Saturday, March 11, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Vick was born June 5, 1950, in Illinois. He was the son of Dock Vick and Eva Young Vick. He was a veteran and attended the Canaan Baptist Church in Mississippi.
Mr. Vick married Barbara J. Downey in 1997 and she survives him along with one son, Ricky D. Vick of Little Rock; two brothers, Ray Vick of Forrest City and DeWayne Vick of Lake Village; four sisters, Helen Duncan, Jeannette Martino and Paula Barger, all of Forrest City, and Donna Hollowell of Faulkner, Miss.
Services for Mr. Vick will be held in the chapel of Stevens Funeral Home, Friday, March 17, 2000, at 2 p.m. with burial to follow in Forrest Park Cemetery. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Dennis Wayne Gibson
Dennis Wayne Gibson, age 71, of Moro, died Tuesday, March 14, 2000, at Crestpark Retirement Center in Helena.
Mr. Gibson was born April 5, 1928, in Moro. He was the son of Oscar Dennis Gibson and Parrie Lee Brown Gibson. He was retired from the U.S. Navy and a member of Moro Baptist Church.
Mr. Vick is survived by his wife, Martha Gibson of Moro; one daughter, Debra Gibson of Moro; one son, Dennis Wayne Gibson II of Moro; and three grandchildren.
Visitation will be Thursday, March 16, 2000, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Roller-Citizens Funeral Home in Marianna. Services will take place Friday, March 17, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home of Marianna with burial to follow in Marianna Memorial Park. Reverend Charles Jones will officiate and Roller-Citizens Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements.
Ida B. Jimerson
Ida B. Jimerson, age 79, of Forrest City, died Monday, March 13, 2000.
She was born Jan. 2, 1921.
Mrs. Jimerson was preceded in death by her husband, Richard Lee Jimerson and is survived by one daughter, Lucille Hall, of Forrest City; six sons, Richard Jimerson Jr., Acie Jimerson, O. C. Jimerson, Lee Jimerson, all of Forrest City, Willie Jimerson of Wynne, L. C. Jimerson of Chicago, Ill.; one sister, Myrtle Brown of Los Angeles, Calif.; eight grandchildren, three great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, March 17, 2000, from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Pine Tree Church of God in Christ in Forrest City. Services will be held Saturday, March 18, 2000, at 12 p.m. at Pine Tree Church of God in Christ with burial to follow in Casteel Cemetery. Gunn Funeral Home of Little Rock will be in charge of arrangements.
Andre J. Pettigrew
Andre J. Pettigrew, age 22, of Forrest City, died Friday, March 10, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Pettigrew was born February 21, 1978, to Johnnie Pettigrew and Hazel Ross.
He is survived by his parents of Forrest City; two brothers, Taurus Ross of Jonesboro, and Kenneth Rogers of Forrest City.
Visitation will be held Friday, March 17, 2000, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Woodhouse Mortuary. Funeral Services will be held Saturday, March 18, 2000, at 2 p.m. in the chapel of Woodhouse Mortuary with Rev. Marland Brown officiating. Burial will follow at Casteel Cemetery under the direction of Woodhouse Mortuary.
John H. "Red" Scott
John H. "Red" Scott, age 85, of Los Angeles, Calif., died Sunday, March 12, 2000.
Mr. Scott, a former resident of Heth, was born Dec. 16, 1914, in Friars, Miss., to Will and Lucy Scott.
He is survived by one daughter, Willette Brown, of Los Angeles, Calif.; two sons, Melvin Scott and Willie Scott, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; three sisters, Georgia Meeks of Heth, Lillie Cunningham and Henrietta Cunningham, both of Gary, Ind.; one brother, Lenon Scott, of St. Louis, Mo.; and four grandchildren
Funeral services will be held, Saturday, March 18, 2000, at 10 a.m. at New Lake Grove M. B. Church in Black Fish Lake with Rev. Norris Latham Jr. officiating. Burial will be Monday, March 20, 2000, at 11 a.m. in the National Cemetery in Memphis, Tenn., under the direction of Woodhouse Mortuary.
Geneva Young
Geneva Young, age 50 , of Palestine, died Thursday, March 16, 2000.
Ms. Young was born April 19, 1949, in Palestine to Carnell Young and Perlie Walker Young. She was an employee of Madison Head Start.
She is survived by one sister, Murline Byers, of Forrest City; two brothers, Jo Nathan Taylor, of Urbana, Ill., Soloman Taylor, of Forrest City.
Visitation will be held, Saturday, March 18, 2000, from 3:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. in the chapel of Woodhouse Mortuary. Funeral Services will be held, Sunday, March 19, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Williams Temple Church of God in Chris with Bishop W. P. Moore officiating. Burial will follow in Jericho Cemetery under the direction of Woodhouse Mortuary.
Leo Devotia Jeffers
Mr. Leo Devotia Jeffers, age 92, of Blytheville, died Sunday, Feb. 27, 2000, at his home.
He was born August 29, 1907, in Forrest City, to John Jeffers and Mary Jeffers.
He is survived by his wife, Lurene Jeffers of Blytheville; three daughters, Mary Frances Moss, of Chicago, Ill., Pamela Prude and Melissa Evans, both of Memphis, Tenn.; two brothers, Edward Jeffers, of Forrest City and John Jeffers, of Cleveland, Ohio; and a sister, Gussie Hilliard, of Gary, Ind.
Visitation was today, Thursday, March 2, at Lane Chapel CME Church from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. Funeral services were today, Wednesday, March 2, at Lane Chapel CME Church at 12 p.m. with Rev. Ronald Williams officiating. Burial was at Haven Rest Cemetery in Brinkley under the direction of Clay Funeral Home and McDonald Horne Funeral Home.
Annie Francis Smith
Mrs. Annie Francis Smith, age 73, of Arcadia, Fla., formerly of Forrest City, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at her home.
She was a member of Willis Temple Church of God in Christ Church in Madison and served as president of the Ushers Board. She was also a Community Usher.
She is survived by a daughter, Rev. Christine Kirkland, of Arcadia, Fla; her mother, Moddie Hughes, of Madison; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, March 3, from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. at Kennedy Chapel. Funeral services will be Saturday, March 4, at 12 p.m. at Willis Temple Church of God on Christ in Madison with Superintendent J.D. Alexander officiating. Burial will follow at Paradise Gardens Cemetery in Edmondson, under the direction of Kennedy Funeral Home.
Mary Caskey Walker
Mary Caskey Walker, age 66, of Charlotte, died Monday, March 20, 2000 at Baptist Medical Center in Little Rock.
Mrs. Walker, a former resident of Pine Tree, was born October 7, 1933, in Hunter. She was the daughter of Robert Caskey and Grace Patterson Caskey. She was a member of the Cord Baptist Church.
Mrs. Walker married Earl Walker in 1951 and he survives her, along with one son, Earl Walker Jr., of Pine Tree; two daughters, Nancy Miller, of Evening Shade and Donna James, of Charlotte; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Mrs. Walker will be held tonight, Wednesday, March 22, 2000, from 6 until 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Services will be held Thursday, March 23, 2000, at 2 p.m. at the Pine Tree Baptist Church with burial to follow in Barnishaw Cemetery. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
