Warren Lemuel Chowning
Warren Lemuel Chowning, age 80, of Alexandria, Virginia, died Sunday, Dec. 26, 1999, at Mount Vernon Hospital in Alexandria.
He was born Nov. 26, 1919, in Wynne and was the son of Cleve Lee Chowning and Frances Romains Edwards Chowning. He graduated from Wynne High School and was a member of the U.S. Air Force and a veteran of WWII. He was a personnel specialist for the U.S. Army at Fort Polk, Louisiana; was employed by the U.S. Corps of Engineers in Buffalo, New York and was personnel specialist for the U.S. Marine Corps in Quantico, Va. at his retirement. He was of the Christian Church faith.
He is survived by his wife, Mamie Bass Chowning of Alexandria, Va.; one brother, R.W. "Bob" Chowning of Magnolia, Ark.; and two sisters, Margaret Chowning Ellis of Wynne and Mary Frances Chowning Pitts of Harrisburg. He was preceded in death by a brother, Gene Norman Chowning.
Graveside services will be held Thursday, Dec. 30, 1999, at 2 p.m. at Cogbill Cemetery with Rev. Wes George officiating. Kernodle Funeral Home of Wynne is in charge of the arrangements.
Frank L. Najewski
Frank L. Najewski, age 71, of Forrest City, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at the White County Regional Medical Center in Searcy.
He was born Aug. 3, 1928, in Radom, Ill. and was the son of Joseph Najewski and Mary Novack Najewski. He lived in Forrest City since 1963, was a retired assistant supervisor for Airtherm, was a veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.
He married O'Neal Brown in 1950, and she survives him along with two daughters, Linda Wood of Marion and Donna Gay of Forrest City; one sister, Agnes Ragsdale of Millstadt, Ill. and one grandchild.
Funeral services will be held Friday, Jan. 31, 1999, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with burial following in Hughes Cemetery. Visitation will be held Thursday, Jan. 30, 1999, from 6 p.m. until 9 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Stevens Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Nancy Jackson
Nancy Jackson, 88, died Thursday, Dec. 2, 1999, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
Mrs. Jackson was born July 11, 1911, and was the daughter of William Pitts and Nancy Rodgers Pitts. Mrs. Jackson was a methodist.
She is survived by her son, Jack Jackson of Palestine.
Funeral services will be scheduled at a later time.
Fred Dan Jones
Fred Dan Jones, 55, of St. Francis County, died Tuesday, Nov. 30, 1999, in Little Rock.
He was born in Madison Dec. 2, 1943, to Chiney Jones and Emmie Vales Jones. Mr. Jones was a general maintenance worker.
He is survived by his daughter, Elizabeth Nations of Penn.; two brothers, Artie Williams and James Jones, both of Widener; three sisters, Bobbie Bowen of Widener, Edna Lane of Forrest City and Verna Louise Oxford of North Little Rock and two grandchildren.
Funeral services were held Saturday, Dec. 4, at Bell Cemetery in Palestine, with Brother J.E. Hughes officiating. Services were under the direction of Morgan Funeral Home.
Aubrey James Jones
Aubrey James Jones, age 80, of Palestine, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999.
He was born May 9, 1919, near Gill and was the son of William and Leah Jones. He was a retired farmer, a WWII veteran and a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Palestine. He was a member of the St. Francis Farmer Cooperative.
He is survived by his wife, Audrey Mae Howton Jones of Palestine; three daughters, Diana Susan Woerner of Glen Ellyn, Ill., Barbara Leah Holcombe of Manhattan, Kan. and Lisa Marie Black of Little Rock; a sister, Catherine Singer and six grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl Jones, Lawrence Jones and Homer Jones.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at 10 a.m. at Cumberland Presbyterian Church in Palestine. Graveside services will follow at Mars Hill Cemetery in Gill. Visitation will be held Tuesday, Dec. 7, 1999, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home in Forrest City.

James T. "Dutch" Meredith
James T. "Dutch" Meredith, 74, of Forrest City, died Saturday, Dec. 4, 1999, at Baptist East Hospital in Memphis.
Mr. Meredith was born June 19, 1925, in Tyronza and was the son of Leonard Meredith and Eula McClroy Meredith. He lived in Forrest City for the past 40 years, was a member of the First United Methodist Church, was retired from State Farm Insurance, was a veteran of World War II, a member of Kiwanis, was a Mason, was a past school board member, a member of the Moose Lodge, a member of the Forrest City Country Club and was an honorary Colonel of the Arkansas State Police.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Rheba Binns in 1987.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara Meredith VanVranken of Shreveport, La.; two sons, Dr. James T. Meredith, Jr. and Mark Meredith, both of Forrest City and five grandchildren.
Visitation was Sunday, Dec. 5, at Stevens Funeral Home. Services were held today Dec. 6 1999, at 10 a.m. at First United Methodist Church. A graveside service was held today, Monday, Dec. 6, at 4 p.m. at Pine Wood Memorial Cemetery in Crossett. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or the First United Methodist Church.
Mary Elizabeth Heustess Oswalt
Mary Elizabeth Heustess Oswalt, 87, of Forrest City, died Sunday, Dec. 5, 1999, at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Forrest City.
Mrs. Oswalt was born Sept. 27, 1912, in St. Francis County and was the daughter of C.W. Heustess and Ella Mae Holloway Heustess. She lived in St. Francis County all of her life, was a housewife and a member of the First Baptist Church.
She is survived by her husband, William "Bill" Oswalt; three sons, Gerald Oswalt, Glenn Oswalt and Ray Oswalt, all of Forrest City; one brother, Paul Heustess of Forrest City; one sister, Willie Holder of Memphis; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be tonight, Monday, Dec. 6, from 7 to 9 p.m. Services will be held graveside Tuesday, Dec. 7, at 2 p.m. at the Forrest City Park Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
James Dees Sr.
James Dees Sr., 74, of Henderson, Tenn., formerly of Forrest City, died Monday, Dec. 6, 1999, of emphysemia at Methodist LeBonheur Healthcare in Jackson, Tenn.
Mr. Dees was born May 28, 1925, in Chester County, Tenn., to James Calvin and Mattie Barton Dees. He was a World War II veteran, a member of Holly Springs United Methodist Church and a retired employee of Sanyo Manufacturing Company in Forrest City before moving to Henderson, Tenn., in 1990.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Jo Smith Dees of Henderson; a son, James Dees Jr. of Olive Branch, Miss.; four daughters, Joette Chambers of Memphis, Tenn., Judy Johnson of Cape Coral, Fla., Janet Eshinaur of Kansas City, Mo., and Joy Posey of Forrest City; a sister, Jean Mayfield of Henderson, Tenn.; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Dec. 8, at 2 p.m. at Casey Chapel in Henderson, Tenn., with Rev. Dennis Renshaw officiating. Burial will follow at Holly Springs Cemetery under the direction of Casey Funeral Home.
Alvis Graham Jr.
Alvis Graham Jr., 57, of Marianna, died Tuesday, Dec. 2, 1999, at his home in Marianna.
Mr. Graham was born July 23, 1942, in Marianna to Alvis Graham Sr. and Rosie Lee Hart. He was a farmer and a member of First Baptist Church in Marianna.
He is survived by his wife, Marcia Duke Graham of Marianna; a daughter, Libby Herndon of Marianna; four sisters, Nellie Lovell, Judy Key and Jane Key all of Marianna and Helen Bowman of Moro; a brother, Paul Graham of Marianna and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held graveside at 12:30 p.m. today at Marianna Memorial Park under the direction of Roller-Citizens Funeral Home. Memorials are to be made to the National Heart Fund.
Theodore H. Bridges
Theodore H. Bridges, 92, of Colt, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at his home.
Mr. Bridges was born Nov. 16, 1907, in Guys, Tenn., to Bart Bridges and Ada Boatwright. He lived in Colt most of his life, was a heavy equipment operator for Missouri Pacific Railroad, a member of Colt United Methodist Church and a member of the Colt Lions Club.
He is survived by his wife, Helen Nicholas Bridges, a daughter, Annette Coats of Colt; a son, Thomas Bridges of Caldwell; two brothers, Hubert Bridges of Tracy, Calif., and Clarence Bridges of Wynne; two sisters, Audrey Bridges and Edna Beales both of Wynne. Five grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held tonight at Stevens Funeral Home from 6 to 8. Funeral services will be Friday, Dec. 10,1999, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel at 2 p.m. with Rev. Everett Isom and Rev. John Speed officiating. Burial will follow at Forrest Park Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Memorials can be made to Colt United Methodist Church.
