Adron C. Jumper
Adron C. Jumper, age 60, of Palestine, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at his home.
Mr. Jumper was born, Sept. 7, 1939, in Palestine and was the son of Homer Jumper and Christine Dover Jumper. He lived in Palestine all of his life. He was a salesman and a member of the Twin Assembly of God Church in Palestine.
He was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Andrea Jumper, in 1966.
He is survived by his wife, Delores Chipman Jumper; two sons, Scotty Jumper, of Forrest City, and Kevin Jumper, of Palestine; his parents; a grandmother, Lillie Cooper Jumper, of Palestine; three brothers, Donald Jumper, Jerry Jumper, and Kenny Jumper, all of Palestine; two sisters, Norma Busby and Judy Hill, both of Palestine; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
Visitation will be Friday, May 26, 2000, from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Twin Assembly of God Church. Services will be held Saturday, May 27, 2000, at the Twin Assembly of God Church at 10 a.m. Burial will follow in Bell Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Twin Assembly of God Church.
James E. "Jim" Williams
James E. "Jim" Williams, age 82, of Forrest City, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, at the Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas, Texas.
Mr. Williams was born Dec. 24, 1917, in Yorkville, Tenn., to Albert Williams and Vera Edwards Williams. Mr. Williams was a veteran of World War II and a retired district director of ECAEOC. He was the past commander of the VFW Post in Warren, and the past president of the Forrest City Kiwanis Club. He was also a member of First Baptist Church.
In 1942, Williams married Mildred Hickingbottom and she survives him. He is also survived by one son, James E. Williams Jr. of Dallas, Texas, and two grandchildren.
Funeral services for Mr. Williams will be held Saturday, May 27, 2000, at First Baptist Church at 2 p.m. followed by burial services at Forrest Park Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Visitation will be held tonight, Friday, May 26, from 6-8 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevens Funeral Home.
Pearl Crews
Pearl Crews, age 84, of Palestine, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at her home. Mrs. Crews was born Oct. 20, 1915, in Biloxi, Miss., and was the daughter of Archie Carl Reynolds and Mattie Taylor Reynolds. She lived in Palestine most of her life, was a homemaker and a member of First Baptist Church in Palestine.
She married Fred Crews in 1935 and he preceded her in death in 1956. She is survived by a daughter, Virginia Deaviser, of Palestine; two sons, Kenneth Crews, of Forrest City and Ronnie Crews, of West Memphis; two sisters, Leona Sulcer, of Palestine and Emogene Polland, of Memphis, Tenn.; six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Services will be Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Stevens Funeral Home Chapel at 10:30 a.m. Burial will be in Bell Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
Hermon Fields
Hermon Fields, age 58, of Chicago, Ill., formerly of Forrest City, died Tuesday, May 23, 2000, in Chicago, Ill.
Mr. Fields was born Nov. 8, 1941, in Forrest City to Simon Fields and Pauline Allman Fields. He graduated from Lincoln High School in 1961 and moved to Chicago where he attended Chicago City College. He worked for Oreo Co. for 28 years.
He married Delois Salsbury in 1969 and she preceded him in death.
He is survived by a son, Anthony Fields, of Chicago; his mother, Pauline Fields, of Fresno, Calif.; six brothers, Willie Fields, of Memphis, Tenn., Simon Fields, of Lancaster, Calif., Freddie Fields, Herbert Fields and Charles Fields, all of Fresno, Calif., Theratha Fields, of Indianapolis, Ind.; four sisters, Rena Myles, of Fresno, Calif., Bettye Dirden, of Los Angeles, Calif., Louise Fields and Queen Austin, both of Forrest City.
Funeral services were held today, Monday, May 29, 2000, at Philadelphia Church of God in Christ in Chicago, Ill., with Pastor Luther Gill officiating.
Manuel Lee Long
Manuel Lee Long, age 57, of Madison, died Thursday, May 25, 2000, in Little Rock.
He is survived by his parents, Adriel Long Sr. and Rachel Long, of Madison; a daughter, Jennifer Stringer, of Missouri; a son, of Jesse Hendri, of Missouri; two sisters, Azzie Long, of Madison and Earnestine Knox, of Florida; three brothers, Adriel Long Jr., of Forrest City, Melvin Long, of Madison, James Long, of Milwaukee Wis.; and two grandchildren.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 30, 2000, from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at Kennedy Funeral Home in Forrest City. Funeral services will be Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Macedonia M.B. Church in Madison with Rev. L.Z. Jones officiating. Burial will be in Forrest City Cemetery under the direction of Kennedy Funeral Home.
India Elizabeth Matlock
India Elizabeth Matlock, age 96, of Forrest City, died Saturday, May 27, 2000, at her home.
Mrs. Matlock was born Sept. 16, 1903, in Durant, Miss., to Henry Clay Parkinson and Jodie Hall Brown Parkinson. She lived in St. Francis County most of her life, was a housewife and a member of the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.
She married Fred Gardner in 1920 and he preceded in death. She married Walter Matlock in 1944 and he preceded her in death in 1960. She was also preceded in death by a son, Aaron Gardner in 2000.
She is survived by two sons, Allen Gardner, of Walls, Miss., Freddie Gardner, of Forrest City; three daughters, Hazel Kelso, of Forrest City, Jodie Ellison, of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Linda Boren, of Forrest City; a step-son, J. W. Matlock, of Forrest City; a step-daughter, Pauline Worley of Forrest City; 18 grandchildren, 18 step-grandchildren, 44 great-grandchildren, 24 step-great-grandchildren, 19 great-great-grandchildren and three step-great-great-grandchildren.
Funeral services were held today, Monday, May 29, 2000, at New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church. Burial was in Loughridge Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home. Memorials are to be made to the New Prospect Missionary Baptist Church in Colt.
Eugene Nold
Eugene Nold, age 79, of Forrest City, died Sunday, May 28, 2000, at Crestpark Nursing Home.
Mr. Nold was born Sept. 2, 1920, in Round Pond, to Charlie Earl Nold and Ola Justrae. He worked for the Highway Department.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, J.C. "Jack" Nold and Robert Earl Nold Sr.
He is survived by a sister, Eloise Graves, of Forrest City; and a brother, Charlie Nold, of Orange Park, Fla.
Visitation will be Tuesday, May 30, 2000, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Stevens Funeral Home. Funeral service will be graveside, Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Forrest Park Cemetery with Rev. Bill Thomason officiating. Stevens Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
Helen Bowers
Helen Bowers, age 91, died Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Crittenden Memorial Hospital in West Memphis.
Mrs. Bowers was born March 16, 1909, in Jacksonville, to Houston Bowers and Annie Mae Wilson Bowers.
Mrs. Bowers is survived by one brother, Benjamin Wilson Bowers of Forrest City.
Graveside services for Mrs. Bowers will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at 2 p.m. at Hazen Cemetery under the direction of Westbrook Funeral Home of Hazen.
Beulah Gilmer Pounders
Beulah Gilmer Pounders, age 65, of Forrest City, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at Crestpark Nursing Home.
Mrs. Pounders was born April 18, 1935, in Pontotoc, Miss., to George Marlin Gilmer and Mary Catherine Terry Gilmer. She lived in Forrest City for the past 47 years, worked at the Unemployment Office and was a member of Bethel Baptist Church.
She married Ernest Kenneth Pounder in 1956, and he survives her along with a daughter, Melissa Dawson, of North Little Rock; three sons, Ken Pounders, of Horseshoe Bend, Tony Pounders, of Cabot, Gil Pounders, of Olive Branch, Miss.; four brothers, Lee Gilmer, of Memphis, Tenn., Therrell Gilmer, of Arlington, Texas, Harold Gilmer, of Colt, Bobby Gilmer, of Wynne; three sisters, Mavis Walraven, of Memphis, Tenn., Mary Lynn Busby and Linda Cosgrove, both of West Memphis; and seven grandchildren. Mrs. Pounders was preceded in death by a sister, Laverne Moore; a brother, Gene Gilmer; and a grandson, Jeremie Pounders.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m., today Tuesday, May 30, 2000, at Stevens Funeral Home.
Services for Mrs. Pounders will be held in the Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at 4 p.m. in the Chapel of Stevens Funeral Home, with Rev. Dustin Limke officiating. Burial will follow at Forrest Park Cemetery under the direction of Stevens Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to United Cerebral Palsy.
Harold Sharpe
Harold Sharpe, age 84, died Monday, May 29, 2000, at his home in Memphis, Tenn.
Mr. Sharpe was born March 9, 1916, in Forrest City to Sam and Sarah Sharpe.
Mr. Sharpe graduated from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville with a J.D. Degree in 1938. He practiced law in Forrest City for over 60 years, was a member and past president of the St. Francis County Bar Association, a member of the Arkansas and American Bar Associations, a member of the Trial Lawyers Association of America and a member and past president of the Arkansas Trial Lawyers Association.
He was also a founder and past president of the Forrest City Shriner's Club, a member and past president of the Forrest City Rotary Club and honored as a Paul Harris Fellow, a member and past president of the Forrest City Lion's and Mason's Clubs and a member and past president of the Forrest City Area Chamber of Commerce. He served on the Board of the Forrest City Public Library and was a founder of Forrest City Abstract Company.
He is survived by his wife, Aileen Lewis Sharpe; three daughters, Dr. Nancy Sharpe, of Denver, Co., Emily Sharpe of Wilmette, Ill., and Amy Sharpe, of New Orleans, La.; a son, Sam Sharpe, of Memphis, Tenn.; a sister, Estelle Engelberg, of Memphis, Tenn.; and four grandchildren.
Graveside services will be Wednesday, May 31, 2000, at 11 a.m. at Temple Israel Cemetery in Memphis.
